  1. Olympus must be getting nervous about the GH3. I think they better worry a littler more than 23 bucks worth though, or they are liable to have a shit load of overstock. 🙂

    1. Nonsense. The GH3 will have its strengths as will the E-M5. No IBIS in the GH3 and definitely no 5-axis stabilization. And, the E-M5 has the Sony sensor with great DR. BTW, I have both an E-M5 and GH2 so I’m not biased against Pany. Oly will still lead on stills and Pany on video. This is just good for all of us, and keeps both companies on their toes.

      1. I second this one.

These are two completely different beasts: one for video the other for photography.

One can’t touch the other at it’s own game let alone replace it.

The GH3 might be better for photography than the OM-D for video but the price is not even close so I believe each will still be worth the asking price.

  2. Should be plenty of competition in the coming months from the G5 at the low end (likely $600 by the holidays), NEX 6 in same price range as OM, and the sure demand for the GH3 based on leaked specs even if it sells at $1500-1700 body only. D7000 prices have now fallen under $1000 body only and K-5’s now go for $880 body only.

Olympus has several choices: 1) drop the E-M5 price to $850 or so by the holidays, 2) introduce an E-xxx mFT version of the E-M5 for around $700 to compete with the G5 or 3) watch sales erode.

Based on their apparent failure to bring the Sony sensor to their E-P line for Photokina, I’ve given up on trying to figure them out. Who knows, maybe they have a surprise coming there as well.

    1. Never count out Oly. They hit a home run with the E-M5 and upped the ante. They definitely have more good stuff coming. The pro version should be out within the next year, and you know there will be an E-M6 (or E-M7) next year too. It’s just going to get better.

        1. +1, and glad to see Panny upping the ante with the GH3 for the Pro-OM-D due next year. Great news for mFT consumers and the format in general.

  3. Wow, a 2% reduction in price on the OMD! Most on this forum are assuming from all the news that the OMD is a runaway success but after the initial rush to first comers the OMD currently isn’t even among the top 100 digital camera models sold in the US where m4/3 sales are still low and rank far below Panys popular GF5 in Japan. This is not because of its excellent capabilities but lack of affordable price for the majority and because of its poorer portability with the high hump. Certainly there will be competition from the G5 once more available and better known for its capabilities and competition from the smaller rangefinder shaped mirrorless NEX7/6 and new Fuji with small fast primes.

The current rebate deal of $150 reduction on lens purchased with OMD seems a much better deal to me especially with the 45mm/f1.7 lens.

While there is a lot of current excitement on this forum on the coming GH3 I really do not think at its price it will be a high volume item other than for selling its premier lenses while emphasis on the smaller compact GX series or GXP would have in my opinion resulted in greater sales and success for Pany. So far their efforts on the G and GH series however good they are have not netted Pany significant financial success as the compact GF and GX series currently have in recent years. The same is true with Oly with their 4/3 cameras. My hopes were the GH3 would also be an all metal body but not much bigger than the OM-D.

  4. What this actually means is Amazon now have a decent stock of E-M5’s in. If you look at nearly all of their products for sale, they drop in price slowly according to the amount of stock they have, and how much they have sold.

It’s a nice business model but it also means if you bought someone recently don’t look at it again as it might be priced lower.

Because the E-M5 is new, it’s been at it’s high price for a long time (longer than I expected actually), it’s bound to drop in price now. If you track lens prices on Amazon you’ll see jumps up and down all the time The 12mm f2.0 recently went down £20 in the UK after going up for a long time slowly.

  5. I have to have a little smile to myself, because here in Australia we’ve been enjoying discount prices right from the beginning (while a odd supplier still advertises it for the Recommend Retail price.
