  1. Hmm, the E-P3 came out 2 years ago, not one like Kai sais.
And he sais the Upgrade compared to an E-P1 is minor. What a joke:
Fast AF, incredibly better sensor, Tiltscreen, Touchscreen, great wheel layout, impressive VF-4 Addon, great Image Stabilization etc.
That probably more changes than in the complete Canon Rebel History…

For me the E-P5 is the first complete Pen. P1 and P2 missed the speed, E-P3 had an old sensor… now you get both plus a bunch of extras.

I agree however that the price is steep.

    1. I suggest you actually learn about Rebel history from 300D to 700D (also 70D as tech will be in next Rebel) before mouthing off. You are not even close.

    2. I agree, I was shocked when Kai called it a minor upgrade. Just about every aspect of the E-Px series has had an upgrade, how can that be a minor upgrade?

Also, what was with the repeated ‘tiny sensor’ comments? m43 isn’t that much smaller than APS-C for crying out loud!

    3. Fast AF, incredibly better sensor, Tiltscreen, Touchscreen, great wheel layout, impressive VF-4 Addon, great Image Stabilization etc.

The E-P3 has fast AF in the areas that we need improvement [c-af tracking] it is not any better , better sensor certainly, tilt screen i would much prefer a fully articulated option, its ergonomics are marginally better but still flawed. Huge ugly bolt on EVF at even more expense and IS is of limited use especially for me as my low light shooting is of moving subjects [ dancers]

  2. WTF? I was waiting for them to quit messing around and get to the review….and they never did. I usually like their sarcastic bits, but then they get serious at some point. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen from these guys. I think their time has run out…#jumpedtheshark

    1. Their videos are always entertainment rather than professional reviews.
But it’s interesting to see than wandering around, shooting different places in Hong Kong.

      1. Exactly, it was fun to watch their videos, but recent videos are soso. Running out of ideas?

    2. Agreed. I shut this one off half way. It was not entertaining. Just really boring.

I am not getting the EP5, but it was a little frustrating to have the “cons” done by Kai, and the “pros” done by the guy you can’t even understand.

Also, Kais comment “no longer listen to that smaller sensor hokum. Sony got smaller cameras around an APS-C sensor” Yeah? And their lenses are mostly garbage. Fuji is a much better comparison — great lenses, but look at their size.

      1. Yeah, but it’s not 2011 anymore. Sony getting better lenses all the time now. Some from Oly.

    3. I think Alamby should do the reviews from now on.
She would probably use a wrist strap too, not wave expensive cameras around in the air with no protection.
I’m just waiting for someone to bump Kai and send the camera flying.

  3. if the camera isnt canon or nikon, kai very much has this monotone, boring “review”. I like how he says not much has changed since the e-p1, which couldnt be anymore further from the truth. Listen to the OM-D review and then this one they use a similar style of music and voice tone

  4. Kai prefer GX than OMD if you watch those video review before so is the same thing to EP5 .
Perhaps EP5 will be more attractive if it packed more advance sensor than the OMD .
I really wonder if Pana & Fuji capable to rush it’s latest tech finding into both of their much well known product , GX & X Pro cause all this are 24 months cycling models . Timing is very important here .

    1. And GX1 is undoubtedly a better camera in terms of ergonomics.
OMD is more technically advanced yet hindered by the poor menu, odd unlabeled controls (which are customizable, the reason why they’re unlabeled), and ultimately the retro design that made the camera not as easy to the hand as GX1.

Just hope the new GX is going to be more reasonably priced than the EP5…

  5. If you really analyze the video, they explain that it was more if the same with slight extra features, at a price point where you can get better cameras for the money.

Honestly, they were being nice, instead of just trashing it like they should’ve. It IS overpriced and you can find better for the price with Fuji and Sony WITH better and larger sensors.

Olympus shot themselves in the foot with this camera and the only ducks to buy it will be the Olympus fanboys. I mean, you can even buy a brand new GH3 for that price.

      1. omg this is fucking sad. do u work for olympus? if you do, wtf u doing advertising for them on your day off? Was it hard to find those sites? don’t be so fucking insecure with a god dam camera you didn’t even make or make money off. that been said this ep5 is basically omd without the viewfinder. I was expecting range finder style but it literally is the same as ep3 with minor improvements. for 1k? GTFO, 500 is the right mark.

        1. Why so angry? You’re the one sounding insecure so chill.

I agree that the price at $1000 is expensive but “literally is the same as ep3 with minor improvements”? So different/better sensor, 5 axis IBIS (instead of 2), addition of WiFi and tilting screen, 1/8000s shutter, peaking, etc. doesn’t count as improvements? Either you didn’t know about the 2 cameras at all or don’t know the meaning of “literally”.

    1. You CAN almost buy a GH3 for the same price, but the pictures out of a GH3 do not compare well to that of the OMD. The video on the other hand, well the GH3 has that one hands down. So it depends what you are after. I am after a camera that allows me to be creative and use shallow depth of field. I need a camera to sit in the rain and work. I need a camera to blow up big for wedding albums. I need a camera to focus on moving targets when doing school sports day events and carnivals etc… I will stick with my D700 and D800. My back is not hurting yet. Mirrorless? SURE, when there is affordable full frame versions, I am 100% in. Until then, the OM-D is fine for walk around, but very grainy at all ISO’s.

      1. Don’t compare well to GH3? They compare really well, performance of sensor is almost exactly same, it is same sensor, so not really surprising. Only jpg processing is different and gh3 here is not worse or better, only different. Not to mention you can fine tune jpg output quite a lot.

      2. None of the E-M5, E-P5, and GH3 produce photos as grainy as film. The sensors are beyond that.

Sure, for maximum clarity and depth of field you want a D700 or D800. That’s understandable but given correct processing of the raw files, there is little wrong with any of the three.

    2. “”You CAN almost buy a GH3 for the same price, but the pictures out of a GH3 do not compare well to that of the OMD. The video on the other hand, well the GH3 has that one hands down””

The pictures out of the GH3 are all but identical to the E-M5 which is hardly a surprise. The only difference is the default JPEG engine which is easily customized to any look you wish including Olympus Walt Disney colors. The only fair way to compare the prices of the E-P5 to the GH3 is with the EVF ,without an EVF you are stuck with P&S style shooting, maybe that would suit you if you like defaults lol Joking aside outwith the USA E-P5 body only was the same price as the GH3 till last weeks price drop with the EVF it is significantly more

        1. yeah , i remember someone talk about Olympus Walt Disney colors and Monkey Skin tone
but it is notmal ,some love concentrat colors and someone love natural colors.
          do not worry 😉

  6. Kai’s reviews are completely empty. Always have been, and probably always will be. How he managed to get people watching him in the first place is a mystery to me.

  7. For fellow Americans who might miss the gag: This is a pitch-perfect parody of the BBC’s “Top Gear” car show. They do the Clarkson-and-Hammond shtick really well: Kai mimics Clarkson’s delivery style almost perfectly, the enthusiastic cameraman is a good proxy for the Hamster, and they even included an oh-I-accidentally-spelled-penis joke. Same rambling delivery style, same bombastic opinionation, same casual disregard for factual accuracy… about the only thing missing was Kai asking “What could go wrong?”

Quite charming. Of course if you wanted to know anything about the E-P 5 — oh, maybe how well the new WiFi features work, for example — it’s completely useless. But that’s also right in tune with the “Top Gear” ethos.

    1. I’ve been a fan of TopGear since their comeback in the 00`s, before James May even came in, and let me tell you one thing, as much as I sporadically enjoy Kai’s humor, DigitalRev is FAR from Top Gear tier, it fails miserably at having the charm and spark of the BBC show. At least Clarkson, May and Hammond have gone back and forth on their opinion towards a brand depending on the merits of the car itself. Kai on the other hand has always delivered an intentionally deficient review of m4/3 cameras, specially olympus, never stating the full list of features, not even highlighting the most important ones either. I hate to sound like an Oly fanboy cause I actually loathe a lot of Oly’s practices, BUT, Kai does have a bias against Oly, just look at any of the previous reviews, in fact, just look at how often they actually do a m4/3 review compared to Canikon or Sony. The sad and irritating thing is that, while they do make fun of ALL companies, it’s only with m4/3 and particularly Oly when they make NO EFFORT to make a decent review, whenever they do a CANIKSONY review they state ALL its flaws and virtues, with m4/3 it’s always like ¨well this is the new m4/3 camera and it’s…ahh..ummm…yeah…tiny sensor¨.

I have nothing against them humiliating Oly as a company but a gearhead like Kai could at least point out ALL the facts and features instead of making up crap like nothing has changed since the E-P1, I mean, I’ve heavily criticized the E-P5 for lacking an EVF and being overpriced but saying it’s no different in performance to the E-P1 is just BS. Trying to convey the notion that m4/3 has a tiny sensor as if it was closer to P&S than APS-C is just pathetic, they could’ve at least made the observation against Leica or the RX1. When they did the OMD they made little to no comment on the weather sealing or the modularity, now they omitted the WiFi and rushed through the dials and EVF and 1/8000 like it was nothing. Sure the E-P5 is a halfassed attempt by Oly in some regards, but the level of indifference towards the actual novelties of the camera is leveling on offensive.

      1. I’m certainly not claiming it’s as good as “Top Gear,” just that they were imitating the style (intentionally, I suspect.) You have to admit that in the segment, Kai sounds almost exactly like Jezza.

        1. I know where you’re coming from, that’s true, but it’s as you said, only style and no substance. I agree with your observations but I was trying to make a general comment on how they have this ¨attitude¨ towards this system as if it was irrelevant and how because of that they loose all kind of similarity with Top Gear’s style in favor of their agenda. That’s the thing that annoys me the most, I could handle the Top Gear style review, I actually crave it, it’s what made DigitalRev unique among camera review sites, but instead they always pull these half-assed reviews with m4/3 cams that are neither serious (as they said) complete reviews nor Top Gear styled antics where you can pick the serious from between the fun. This review was just as their attitude towards m4/3: Meh…

M4/3 has a lot of flaws but they make these reviews like it was some minor player in the mirrorless market, as they pointed in the end, the E-P1 initiated mirrorless cameras but the E-P5 is just another product. IMO that view is just shortsighted, the E-P5 may look like just another ¨evolutionary¨ step but in reality it only falls short in one feature: built-in EVF

Had it featured an EVF this camera would’ve rocked the market much harder than the OMD in its time. Lacking just one feature doesn’t make this camera as irrelevant as they like to portray it, try to find any other camera in its body class than can pack that much unique features outside of m4/3…yeah good luck…

  8. Not a good review.
    Improved over the previous EP3:
New sensor, new stabilization, new shutter and 1/8000, low ISO expansion, Focus Peaking, Wifi, Tilt screen, New ergonomics with 2 wheels new buttons and a new switch.

A number of these the OMD doesnt have, nevermind the EP3.

They are just doing this to stir up controversy, which is what they like to do more than camera review they are focusing on entertainment. You can see this by the buckets of missing info, the spent longer talking about the shutter moving with the wheel, as if you can push the shutter and turn the wheel simultaneously.

    Silly review.

    Abraham

  9. Kai is the spokesperson for the FF cartel. What do you expect? Kai never had anything good to say about m43 cameras.

  10. The E-P5 is a huge improvement, especially if you have used E-P1 right from the beginning. Some things people have just taken it for granted, the AF back then was a joke, and now even high ISO is decidedly much better.

  11. Taking Kai seriously is like taking Charles Barkley seriously as an NBA analyst. It’s entertainment.

      1. Kai provides us with a humorous view on the camera industry and the mostly male fucktards sitting in front of their pcs exercising their wanking muscles over camera specs and the sight of Alamby but neither go out and shoot very often nor are that much interested in photography except for the tech.

  12. You take him seriously? Seriously?

The EP5 with the VF4 seriously good. Which MILC has 1/8000 sec? None.
And 5_axis IBIS? and can use an EVF so huge? Has so many fine lenses?
It is very over priced tho.

      1. None? Nikon 1 has had 1/16000 shutter for a while now, as well. In the future, if you are making a list of points, try and make the first one the most salient, because no one is going to read what you say after if it’s wrong.

        1. What I should have said is none of the serious MILCs that have adequate performance and that enthusiasts would buy (like the NEX, X-Pro1,) do not have 1/8000 sec. I was talking about serious MILCs that can do the job of DSLRs but sorry I did not make that clear. The Samsungs and Nikon 1, and the Pentax Q etc do not count.

  13. If you’re gonna giof around and try be witty at least be intelligent and somewhat professional enough to be honest like as the above posters have mentioned Topgear being a good example of what this idiot is perhaps trying to pull off.
There was a time I didn’t mind digitalrev but the honest truth is Kia has lost it and I rarely find Nything he says funny anymore and I definitely find nothing he says informative. Perhaps he is trolling for ratings sake but in all honesty if I want a good review I watch Chris Nickles at The camera store channel, this guy is a geek with knowledge, is extremely informative and they pull off the occasionall humor which can be appreciated but never does he just mislead the audience by rubbishing a product like that.

  14. If Kia was my jester in my palace it wouldn’t take me long before I tire of his lame clown act and send him to the lions to play with them…..lol, perhaps that’s a little too extreme.

  15. Maybe the E-P5 will be remembered as the last top-tier PEN that comes without a viewfinder. Panasonic realized after the GX1 that a good camera doesn’t make a good product, and I think Oly is finally about to see that too. Mid-term, Oly could end up with a line-up similar to Panasonic, with the E-PM and E-PL lines merging (GF equiv), the new entry-level OMD going after the G series, the E-P series either getting a viewfinder or getting axed completely. E-M5 and upwards, there’s potential anyway. The E-P5 is also a reminder to Pana not to price the GX7 too high. If the former is perceived as expensive at 1000$, Panasonic shouldn’t price it much higher. If the current feature set is correct, Pana has the viewfinder (yay), but it’ll lack tilt screen, IBIS is only 2-axis, shutter may be 1/4000, and sensor may be the same as E-P5. However, tiltable EVF and never bevore seen IBIS could be enough to price it a premium.

  16. Funny seeing fanboys unhappy about a neutral review…
To be honest, I kind of agree with the general message even if not all facts are 100% correct: ep5 brings nothing that isn’t already on the market and very little that wasn’t on the om-d. And the price would suggest a small revolution.

I like digitalrev exactly for that : a subjective message instead of a collection of pseudo-scientific tests.

    1. But you see, you’re missing the point behind the complaints. As I said before, I’m a big fan of Top Gear, which DigitalRev copies off, I’m also a big fan of DigitalREV itself, for a long time too. What most people are complaining about though is not their humorous take on Oly, which is to be expected, it’s the fact that they fail at both the review and the humor. I’ve seen countless Canon, Nikon and Sony reviews and the never fail to paint a complete image of the usability of a camera (even if all DSLR are the same), they go out and test it in a variety of scenarios and conditions, pulling the usual comedic side joke here and there, that’s what made DigitalRev so appealing. Now ? none of that is present, not the review nor the witty humor. They just go around the block and start reading a list of features (mostly irrelevant ones) while shooting whatever they find at hand in what looks like a 5 mins walk around their office, and they’re done. It’s a rushed, oversimplistic, generic and all around lame attempt at what they’ve always been good at.

This particular ¨review¨ didn’t explore any of the differentiating features of the E-P5 in any depth, if anything their (or Kai’s, at least) comments were misleading or incomplete, sure, the E-P5 is nothing really special in view of the whole market and it’s ok to point that out, but to say that nothing has been gained since the E-P1 is serious BS, and the most annoying thing is how they downplay and trash the whole m4/3 system, omitting the huge lens catalog, the unique features of the system and whatnot, as if m4/3 had nothing to offer over NEX or Canikon.

  17. Well, to me, video was neither informative (not intended, i hear) nor entertaining (intended, i hear). I get nicer HKG footage elsewhere, if i needed.

  18. Kai provides us with a humorous view on the camera industry and the mostly male fucktards sitting in front of their pcs exercising their wanking muscles over camera specs and the sight of Alamby but neither go out and shoot very often nor are that much interested in photography except for the tech. ( I love that post so much, I have to post it again 🙂

  19. I like the review as it focused on all the negatives of the camera whilst every other review focuses on the positives. I was looking at the camera and its more expensive than a Nikon D7100 IS aside its no comparison for IQ. Secondly I own a an OMD and it is a great camera and its cheaper in some stores than the EP5 and has bett upgrade capabilities than the EP5, grip battery grip etc.

I also have a Fuji xe1 and am torn between the OMD and the Fuji. The OMD is a better overall camera but the Fuji and 35mm can deliver some magic. Yet most people on this site knock all other cameras for having HUGE lenses when the Fuji and 35 is lighter and the same size as the OMD with he panaleica.

To conclude most people are partisan as people are hating on Kai for pointing out the negatives, people on here hardly give any respect to bigger cameras and other tech. See comments above about rebel line up.

I love digital cameras, Sony, Fuji, canon, Olympus and Panasonic have them all. I use them all as tools for what I need t do and none of them pro work.

Go fun taking pictures the eP5 is a great camera but severely over priced. And that for me is the problem with m43 cameras they are smaller in size and that’s it. The price of lenses, and bodies are not cheap. I can get far more glass for canons and nikons than I can for M43 at the same prices.

And that’s why dslr are back up in sales because they are perceived as being pro, but also they have a large variety of lenses at good prices scaling from budget to pro at useful focus lengths. Yet in 43 world only zooms 45 and above are on the cheaper side. And that is something I hardly use. Panasonic pancakes are what the market should be in terms of price and size for m43. That 17.5 from Olympus is not small by any imagination.

  20. Cewl review from Kai. He is right about almost everything. Love the way the 43 crybabies react on a review which tells the truth about M43. And yes its a tiny sensor and yes 43 has reach its limits and yes there are minor upgrades and yes 43 can not match APSC or FF.

  21. Boehoehoe its not fair. Kay is a bad boy and tells us the truth about our 43 camera’s. I now 43 is the best and the censor is almost as big as FF. Boehoehoehoehoe, now i gonna stroke my OMD because it is the best camera ever.

  22. For all those Olympus fanboys. Kai never said the EP-5 is a bad camera he just said that in terms of a new model it didn’t offer a whole heap of new stuff. Which is doesn’t – and if there is no room for hyperbole reviewers of any description just aren’t interested.

Then again, no new camera will give massive leaps nowadays because most of the development work has been done. The problem for Oly is that they did such a good job of the EP1 and then the leap forward with the OM-D it did not leave a lot of room for significant improvements. Think about it: if they could produce a 30MP MFT do you think they would not have done (anything less than that is merely a small step). Similarly for dynamic range – that sensor is already one of the very best of *any* sensor format. So all that’s left is adding gimmicks like WiFi and NFC, and bags of image profiles.

Getting a workable PDAF will be the next milestone, or a leap in DR. Until then it will be little more than marketing hype to take our money from us.

    1. I always liked Kai’s reviews… but this one is very bad. He said that there are no innovations in this new E-P5 compared to other pens… it’s strange I’ve never heard this from his Canon or Nikon cameras reviews.

      1. Well if you guys were thinking he would praise the E-P5, you might want to see his video of the E-M5. He can make some great reviews, but just won’t be bothered with M4/3.

        1. This +1000

I expected a negative review from the start since, as you said, their EM5 review was so lackluster I thought the E-P5 review could not possibly be any better since it’s not as revolutionary as the OMD was…but we didn’t even get a negative review it was just ¨Meh¨, Kai (0r DR) is not even bothered with m4/3, that’s the annoying thing. I can take negative reviews (I have a very negative view of the E-P5 myself) but getting a ¨Meh¨ review is more insulting.

  23. Actually, I remember very glowing m43 reviews by DigitalRev (12mm f/2 comes to mind). Kai has also repeatedly glorified the Olympus’s OM history, I recall. In the 17mm 1.8 review he even ended with hope “that the beautiful thing that Olympus has going on, goes on strong” (or similar).

So, I just have to thank both the crybabies and the trolls who have gathered today for not being aware of DigitalRev’s earlier reviews (and of course knowing very little about camera technology – keep it up!).

Most of all, I appreciate so many here not having the wits to appreciate the style of humor used in the review…

…and just falling for it like the suckers you are! |-)

If I were Kai, I’d also love to stir things up like this and start off by complaining about “really tiny sensors” and 16mp being “the limit” (while we all know that 12mp is the most you’ll need). Gets you noticed.

    1. You are right, so many fanboys here got angry at a rather neutral review, he didn’t put down the E-P5, no innovation means what it meant, no innovation, faster shutter and lower iso expansion doesn’t mean anything, they’re not innovation at all! Higher specs, yes, innovation, no.

It is very funny when they’re saying it’s an empty review or bad review, I do think they are just people who care about specs & gear that doesn’t know how to take a photo at all…

  24. admin — unless you start doing some sort of registration or moderation, your comments sections is becoming the joke of the internet. It makes DPR feel like Barney the Dinosaur. You have more trolls than a wild dog has fleas.

    1. Oops. Hit “enter” by accident.

Kai’s point seem to be that if you have a PEN already, or, more specifically, E-P1 already, there is no real reason to upgrade. He does have a point, seeing that I’m not jumping at it, as gorgeous and feature-improved as it is. As many people have pointed out, however, I think the performance “upgrades” are pretty substantial.

  25. in a way he is right: step back a bit and the ep5 is less than exciting compared to what the ep1 did at the time it came out. it had the potential to be the next big mft camera, what with the anticipation and the 2 years it took to come out… but it missed the mark. a good camera yes, but not an exciting one. nowhere near the buzz the omd generated.

three mft cameras so far stood out to me: the ep1, the omd and the gx1 (too bad for the crummy sensor). the gx7, if it delivers on its promises, might be next in line.

    1. No GH2? I had the feeling that it was indeed a camera that stands out of the croud.
Otherwise I would agree with you, with special emphasis on the OM-D which was the camera making me to consider m43.

  26. Half sensor …instantly at a disadvantage to most interchangeable lens cameras …I wish Panny would just drop the whole m43 thing and go APS-C or bigger, especially before Samsung gets a good foothold. Leave Oly to their own stupidity.
