Amazing deal: Panasonic GH3 for $799 at Uniquephoto!

I hope this isn’t an error: You can grab a brand new Panasonic GH3 for $799 only(!) at Uniquephoto (Click here and add it to cart to see the price). That’s $200 less than the already $300 discounted price from Amazon US. It costs you only $100 more than the G6 and $50 more than the GM1 with kit lens. Amazing!

  1. Incredible deal for a great camera. I wonder if this will become the new pricing baseline as the GH4K announcement draws nearer.

  2. That’s nice unless you ever go anywhere but the US because it’s not a worldcam and you can’t get flicker-free 25fps for PAL countries with a 50Hz power grid.

  3. Panasonic is feeling the hot breath of Sony on the back of it’s neck. FULL FRAME Baby!

The ONLY way for Panasonic to save itself is to enter 4K video in a big way. Actually, 4K video should have been introduced in the GH3 but they were to conservative, clinging on to the Japanese tradition of incremental upgrades so they could milk every last penny out of the consumer.

All the while, companies such as Samsung and Apple are out innovating them into the ground.

While I hope they survive, I’m not gonna shed a tear if they go belly up.

    1. If that were true the entire cinema business would be dominated by “full frame” cameras like the Canon 1DC with both full frame “advantage” and 4K. Unfortunately it has been a sales flop for Canon. So it is probably much better that you shed a tear for your own delusional thought patterns and go preach to those who are expert at shooting crap video with their “full frame” cameras and eating up this kind of drivel.

    2. I suspect the reason for slow 4K camera release is due to the availability of affordable 4K TVs for the general consumers.

    3. Olympus is feeling the hot breath of Sony AND Panasonic on the back of it’s neck. FULL FRAME and Lumix Bodies with IBIS Baby!

The ONLY way for Olympus to save itself is to rival Panasonic video in a big way. Actually, GH3 quality video should have been introduced in the E-M1 but they were too conservative, clinging on to the Japanese tradition of incremental upgrades and Yakuza greed, so they could milk every last penny out of the Olympus Fanboy.

All the while, Panasonic is giving photographers what they want, while Olympus puts out cameras like the Stylus.

It’s what they deserve, I’m not gonna shed a tear if they go belly up.

        1. Agree, except the part about going “belly up.” If they get tired of camera losses, they’ll just sell the division…some people suspect that’s kinda happening with Sony’s interest in Oly (remember Sony and Konica Minolta), although the Sony investment is more likely centered on diversification into the principal business, the medical operations. If that part goes “belly up,” again…they’ll just sell the camera division.

The companies that need to worry about failing are the non-diversified ones finding themselves in a declining marketplace. The prime example that everyone brings up is Nikon, of course. Sigma is another candidate, although I believe it’s still privately owned so not as transparent as others.

      1. I think you lost it.
E-M1 has very high demand already. And stylus 1 isn’t a camera they depend upon.
Pana have a very nice product with the GM-1, as the smallest m43 camera.
What’s your beef with Olympus, it’s bad for m43 as a system if they would pull out of m43.
Not everyone likes video, and if you really need it there’s Panasonic GH3.
It’s beyond me that anyone is so brand fanatic as you.
You might like a product or not and if not just move on.
Kind of arrogant thinking mfrs need to build camera’s according to your views.
Or you are just pissed because you really wanted an Olympus and you don’t get what you want.

  4. A Panasonic engineer at Photo Plus NYC last week told me that there isn’t a GH4K near at all. It will be very long time coming if at all. So I went out and took ad vantage of Unique’s special price.

  5. It is now time for the Europeans to charter a jet. Go to the US and pick up a GH3 have a holiday and still be better off than buying locally.

So much for support your local dealer. And. Then there is the issue of subsidies. Again.

    1. Yes but expected issue with PAL/NTSC compatibility…and the awesome quality of video is the first reason to buy a GH3…

  6. What are all these references to Pany lowering prices? This is just about one store that probably needs to move some cameras to pay rent. Could be true that Pany is lowering the costs to resellers (costs are adjusted continually long after product has been delivered/sold), but that would be reflected by more stores lowering their prices, such as happened last summer with the GH3.

    1. Happened at least a couple of hours ago. They probably sold whatever allotment they planned for the lower price, and now (with the added attention gained by the low price and the store being mentioned on sites like this one, DPreview, etc.) can sell more and perhaps make some money. Nothing wrong with that. Just marketing.

        1. That’s not what has happened here. No one has mentioned that they did any advertising; they did sell some at the price shown which I’m sure made some happy new GH3 cameras. That’s not an ad at the top of this page; it’s only a screenshot that is now outdated. Remember that this rumor site has not been updated, but it has nothing to do with the store. Ever notice on sale ads for places like Best Buy there is usually some notice like “supplies limited.” If this shop had a banner on their home page that said “GH3 for $799, but then when the item was put into the cart it came up higher, that would be deceptive, although more likely it would have been a mistake made an employee. Good shops know that being labeled as deceptive by their target customer base is a kiss of death for the business, especially if such comments about a photography shop are found on such sites as DPreview that a lot of photo enthusiasts follow. Someone mentioned that this is a brick and mortar store; it that’s true, they need their online business to be healthy to cover their infrastructure costs.

I have nothing to do with this store, and have never shopped there, but I don’t see where they’ve done anything wrong, or deceptive. Stores change their prices all of the time to reflect all kinds of conditions. I don’t think that it’s deceptive if B&H raises a price overnight and I hadn’t bought the item when I saw it at the cheaper price the evening before.

          1. How do you know what happened here? You in charge of their web site?

Owen said it was 799, but in the cart it was 850. That sounds to me like the web site said 799 and he clicked the 799 purchase, but got charged 850. If it had said 850 he would have known it was going to be 850 and there had been a web site change. He may not even have gone to the cart.
He would have then simply commented that the special has gone off and it is now selling at 850.

          2. If that happened, it is deceptive (or a careless mistake). However, I assumed that Owen was referring to the price presented by this site, not on the shop’s website. When I went to their website earlier, it said, like many sites often do, to put in the cart to see the price (which is what Admin wrote above in the post). There was no price shown before adding to the cart, which seems is what whoever took that screen shot did, and, this site apparently added the headline about $799. To be honest, I don’t remember what the price was when I checked some time ago, but I believe it was the $799 one. That was when this was first posted and only had a couple of comments. I already have a GH3 and I’m not even in the US now, so it’s not important to me, except I know one of my students who wants one, so I was going to pass it along to her, mentioning I’m not familiar with the store. She’s out of luck though because she’s in the UK. If I were to consider buying from a different shop than my normal ones (B&H, Adorama, Amazon), I would immediately check resellerratings to find out their reputation.

Perhaps Owen will read this and explain what happened and Admin can explain where he got the tip and how he verified it. Remember that Owen wrote his comment a couple of hours after the price was reported to have increased. I think that Owen made the same comment on the DPreview thread. It’s night in the US, now, but maybe he or someone else who went to their website can tell us what they saw. I just know that I did have to add it to the cart to get any kind of price shown.

I’m not trying to pick a fight or be argumentative, but I really think that perhaps some people didn’t understand that the screen shot above was just the price as it was shown hours ago after whoever took the shot added the camera to the cart. I know from reading these kinds of tips, especially on websites like this and DPreview, that the shops quickly run out of stock or decide they’ve sold enough to get their inventory back in line.

I remember when, last December (maybe January), someone mentioned that the GH2 was $499 at B&H. I quickly ordered one and had it sent to a friend to bring to me – the same with a GoPro that was about half price. I was lucky because within a day or so both prices had gone back up; when I saw the increases I immediately checked to make sure mine at shipped. At the time, no one knew why B&H had quietly dropped the price for a short time, and there were some unhappy folks who had missed the opportunity. When I saw this post very early this morning, I assumed that this was something similar, especially after I checked B&H to see if they had also lowered their price, which they hadn’t.

          3. While I do not disagree with your sentiments nor do I wish to unjustly deride a seller, but please note that the picture above says “view cart”. That to me indicates it is in fact NOT the cart.

I agree that prices may fluctuate and go up or down depending on how much petrol is in the marketing managers car or even if he/she is perusing for a new one or simply to attract business. Having said that it is up to the company as to how they are perceived by, not just their customers but the world in general. This perception is often not helped by the vagaries of life as displayed on web sites, even such as this one.

If a web site can indicate multiple proposals through a screen shot then the company needs to modify their marketing philosophy or their web services provider.

          4. Thanks for your reply. I had missed noticing what you did about the photo on this site. Good point. Perhaps it’s showing the amount already in our cart, or it was a misrepresentation.. We probably will never know what happened unless Owen and Admin explain it.

However, after our earlier discussion, and because of a post on DPreview, I check the shop’s Resellerrating. It’s incredible. They have the “Elite” status, whatever that is. I was actually expecting to find some shady operation (although we all know that management and ownership can instantly change things). I went to their website and played around. I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, but one thing did impress me. They offer classes. That’s cool. I don’t know how many or how often, but it’s still cool. It means an investment in the community, if true. I go to NYC twice a year and always sign up for the free classes (“events”) at B&H and Adorama. Last July I spent four free hours being introduced to Lightroom. Of course, they offer these classes to get you into the store, and it paid off with me because I arrived early, handled a GH3, and bought one after the class, luckily at a sale price at the time. Also got the grip and two extra, third-party batteries. Love the camera – used it extensively on a trip to North Korea a week later – everyone wins.

What I’ve gained from this conversation is knowledge of a new camera resource; if I see another good deal from them, I may take it. I believe in having second, backup bodies of the same camera, which is why I have two GH2s and two OM-Ds. If I had been in the States yesterday, and with what I know now, I might just have ordered another GH3. The sale of the GH2s would have covered the cost.

  7. LOL price crash on oversized camcorder with old sensor. No surprises. Still too expensive. Wait for $399 price next year. At least Panasonic batteries hold their value.

  8. Waiting for Olympus to lower their prices, hopefully soon. I have two weeks to decide on a new camera. Shooting for E-M1 but damn it is $1400 body only.

what i want to know is if i cancel my preorder with grip and adapter will i loose the grip and adapter with the new deal it says nothing am i missing some thing? …. i spoke with amazon by phone yesterday and they say the November 1st release date is now pushed to the 12th of November now and they will up date the site shortly but as you can see the up date has only been the the price and the supplier? any comments or information greatly recieved

        1. I have, actually. Quite often. And also shot when on small boats with a lot of spray coming in. Sometimes it’s kinda cool when you get some spray or raindrops on the lens. And that shooting was mostly with a GH2 before I got a weathersealed GH3, or was using an OM-D with non-weathersealed lenses. I just used the “poor man’s weathersealing,” an umbrella, or a tree with thick foliage. That made me weathersealed as well!

I paid the price once for such behavior when I was at a cultural festival and, unbeknownst to me, one of the cultural traditions was people appearing out of nowhere with buckets of water that they emptied on the participants. My Minolta A1 died on the spot. I was lucky; although it was my fault, Minolta fixed it for free. If that camera would have been weathersealed, I might have avoided being out of the camera for two months and of having felt the obligation to say nice things about Minolta ever since.

        2. I’ve been out photographing in hurricanes with 75 mph winds. It’s difficult to photograph hurricanes when it’s dry.

          1. I see. Then, I would prefer the comfort of a Canikon pro camera. You can get a D3s for under $2k.

          2. Since I buy cameras to take pictures and not as some misguided ‘investment’ that doesn’t matter at all. But why don’t you go buy a D3s for 2k and spend your time on shooting some pictures instead. I mean, you are writing how you’d use csnikon for everything all the time, now put your actions where your mouth is
