XF35mmF2 Review: “Sensational Picture Quality in the Center of the Frame”

XF35mmF2 WR: USA: AmazonUS / BHphoto / Adorama / EU: PCHstore

The Polish site optyczne (translation) posted it’s review of the XF35mmF2 WR.

FR-reader umad?! was so kind to go though the review and the Charts, and made a Summary for us

umad?! says it is:
-the second sharpest Fuji lens (close to the 90mm), much sharper than the f/1.4 version all across the frame
-it’s near perfection (Bokeh, Sharpness, astigmatism, spherical aberrations, reflective coating)
only drawbacks are:
-it’s electronically corrected (like those Zeiss Batis lenses ;))
-it has a coma (no problem, as long as you don’t do astro)
-it has a bit too much CA

Here is optyczne’s the PROS and CONS list:

Advantages

handy, yet sturdy and sealed housing.
sensational picture quality in the center of the frame.
reasonable image quality at the frame edge.
moderate lateral chromatic aberration,
no problems with spherical aberration,
negligible astigmatism,
good work against bright light,
quiet and accurate autofocus.

Defects:

a large longitudinal chromatic aberration,
a large coma,
high vignetting,
a clear distortion.

  1. Not enough to make me purchase yet. My 35 F1.4 is still plenty good enough and my hard earned dough would be better spent filling in other gaps in my lens lineup.
I swear, you guys must have money to burn… (or a serious GAS problem) 😉

    1. 35 F2 is better than 35 1.4 in every single possible way except smaller max aperture. Sharper, better bokeh, quiet and a super fast autofocus. Unless you absolutely require 1.4 aperture, there is no reason to buy 35 1.4. For new comers, 35 F2 is a no brainer. $200 cheaper than 35 1.4 with better image quality and WR. It is a perfect match to XT1 Chrome. Unless 1.4 is absolutely necessary, 35 F2 is top choice for most people, especially new Fuji users. Even plastic and cheap-made Olympus 25 1.8 sells for $399. Fuji 35 F2 is a steal.

    2. 35 1.4 is the most noisy lens I have ever used, very distracting and annoying. Used it for 1 week and then return it. For new Fuji users, 35 2 is strongly recommended. If you come from other brand, 35 1.4 will make you feel Fuji’s (autofocus) technology is many years behind competitors (sony, olympus, etc).
Fortunately 35 F2 focus super fast and quiet. A perfect lens for new comers.

  2. “Sensational Picture Quality in the Center of the Frame” — Yup, pretty enough to close a peephole. :))))

  3. 23 f2 Fuji, TWENTY THREE EFFF TWOOO and the reaction would have been excitement all across the board.

But we know this lens is meant for the xpro2 so we’ll forgive you this one time (and all those other times, because you’re Fuji).

  4. How cool, they actually have an official Leica-style vented hood available:
Makes it nice and easy for third parties to copy. 😉

  5. What fascinates me most about this lens is the corner sharpness. According to optyczne it’s best when wide open. I’ve never seen such behavior with any lens before… Are there any optical engineers around with an idea what the cause could be?

  6. I’m rather disappointed. A good non-wide prime lens shouldn’t have any of the issues mentioned above. With primes the usual trade off is zoom versatility for optical performance. In this case you get neither. It would seem Fuji cheaped out in the optics so that they could add the WR while keeping costs down. A big mistake IMO.
