[UPDATE: FR-reader Winston Chong shared some samples taken with the 50-140 over at the FR-facebook page. Check them out here.]
A FR-reader, who participated at a Fuji event, had the opportunity to take some quick shots with the XF 50-140 f/2.8 WR and also with the XF 56mm f/1.2 APD. The FR-reader shared the full res samples with us via dropbox here… thanks a lot.
I’ll just share two (low resolution) images here on Fuji Rumors. Make sure to download the full resolution samples with EXIF data here on dropbox!

Nice smooth bokeh on both, shame the 50-140 shots all have their sharpness marred by motion blur which makes it hard to judge the overall quality critically.
Agree, the bokeh is probably the best I’ve seen on Fujinon lenses.
agreed the Bokeh is Awesome! And totally agree he was prolly in a rush. Bokeh town!
I forgive the contributor. He just didn’t have time to get used to using it yet.
I sure can see why this guy want to stay anonymous, sure cant take pictures 😀
I have to agree. Disappointing “samples”. 🙁
Consider that they were made in a hurry, probably the reader had just a few minutes to use each lens. The sharpness is not optimal… but I like the quality of the out of focus area very much, very smooth. Probably the most pleasing amongst all Fujinon lenses… but let’s wait for some more samples… never judge too early 😉
I was in the same event if you want sharper image of both lenses.
could you share them via dropbox?
Sent some in your rumor box.
wonderful… and they are so sharp, it almost hurts my eyes ;). Will share them soon on FR , thanks 🙂
With autofocus and OIS on it should be sharp (manual focussing was used here ?). Maybe other factors like Patrick said were contributing to the bluriness of the subject. A a demonstration of Bokeh very nice results. Give me more sharp pictures to convince !
OIS isn’t magic – if you have really shaky hands or if your subjects are moving it won’t make an image sharp.
Nah, that’s not the reason… just stay tuned on FR 😉
errrr, anything to share Patrick?!!
Pourquoi à chaque fois que des photos sont publiées elles sont toujours nulles 🙁 Ils savent pas prendre de bonnes photos avant la sortie d’un produit ? (valable pour toutes les marques)
wow, just terrible. I guess i will be staying with the primes.
It’s clearly motion blur from using a low shutter speed at a long focal length, look at the full size samples. Nothing wrong with the lens.
140mm (APS-C) , 1/60s, moving subjects (?) : not the best way to get sharp photos, even with IS…
Yikes, I can’t wait to see what a pro can do with these lenses! I maybe wouldn’t have shared these photos as they don’t paint these lenses in a good light. I feel like these lenses are much more capable than what these photos portray.
More samples needed….I think these samples are from a stressed tester…. 😉
Horrible samples, impossible to judge the quality by these shots… :-/
The updated images are stunning ! Sharp and Bokeh, now we’re talking. Thank you Patrick for responding that fast. So let’s now talk about the price…. oh, wait.
oh, thanks to Winston Chong for sharing them at faceobook 😉
really? not on the the zoom though.
Why is everyone so hard on the guy who provided samples? Yeah they aren’t the best but at least they’re something!
Because everyone on Internet comment threads are top tier professional photographers/well regarded art critics who are taking time out of their busy schedules to comment on sample shots.
Little known fact.
Why would I want to purchase a lens that has a sample image that looks like it came from a point and shoot? I’m not saying I’m a pro but common, maybe try out the AF mode? How am I suppose to understand how awesome the lens is if I’m looking at something that doesn’t look awesome…. nor shows off what the lens can do… I get what you mean everyone likes to talk smack but this seriously needs some work and you must agree that they are not even in focus.
PS I love the first one. 🙂
Hard on him or the images? I thank him for forgetting about the zoom for now.
maybe because they aren’t even in focus. When looking at lens samples there are a few prerequisites before they are useful, and being in focus is one of them. Possibly this says something about the lens, if it cannot even focus on something as big and brightly lit as the guy sitting down then what will it focus on. The foliage, well, hard to say anything’s really in focus there. A totally pointless lens test. Fuji should get this tester’s name off their list, they are an embarrassment to the company.
Thanks for the samples. Concerning the 56mm APD, I guess I prefer the non-apd, cheaper, plain 56mm F1.2. That extra money and “something” in front of the lenses for this special bokeh effect – not my choice.
Not blaming the photographer for the quality of samples, he put some effort into this. But fujifilm should be really careful into whose hands they put the initial lenses…
I am sure there are well known nature/Telephoto photographers with proven record, dedicated to Fuji, that are just dying to play with this telephoto. When it comes with the future pro level WIDE angle, give it to some good architectural photographer, like this guy – https://www.flickr.com/photos/danhogman/ and the number of very interested photographers, capable to produce good samples is quite large.
I totally agree, these are beautiful lenses take a beautiful picture with them. The dude withe his hand on his chin and has a watch on isn’t even in focus. Oh well I have the 56 and I know what it can do. It can do AWESOME
Whew! I thought I was going blind to think that image is indeed out of focus.
Do you know how long is the queue to get your hands on the sample lens? Do you know that this event was open to the public regardless of your photography level, Fuji user or not? Pro & amateurs were there as well. Are you saying ordinary people should not try out the lens eventhough you are allowed to?
There is definitely a long queue, and samples are limited. There is an open event, everyone is invited and welcome. PRIOR to that, they can use a pro and control the initial samples. Good marketing.
I’m gonna be a downer and say the 50-140 will be a poorer cousin compared to a DSLR + 70-200. I shot with the latter combo for years and one thing the DSLR had was speed because it was a DSLR and not a retro design like the X-T1. When I shoot with DSLRs like events. I don’t take my eye off the viewfinder and only use the front and rear dials with my right hand for shutter/aperture changes. That said I will still buy one when it’s available just to see how fast I can push myself to gain back the speed I had with the DSLR. I wish the X-T1’s front/rear dials can be reprogrammed because changing the shutter speed on the X-T1 using your left hand won’t be easy with the 50-140 🙂
Be honest… The 70-200mm f2.8 is part of the holy trinity in DSLR land. The ideal event shooter gear, ultrafast AF, silent, optically a perfect isolator of subjects. APS/C doesn’t deliver the same shallow depth competence anyhow (in fact a f4.2 behaviour, nothing spectacular), and it would be the first Fujinon to beat ultrasonic AF performance. The 55-200mm has seriously disappointed me as an event shooter and i expect this one not to be so different. A bit out of scope for an MLIC camera concept.
I went to the launch event as well, here’s a write-up plus some pics.
