XF 10-24: release delayed because “it sold better than expected!”

 photo asd_zps601911db.png

PRE-ORDERS

USA: AmazonUS / BHphoto / Adorama / Pictureline / DigitalRev / EUROPE: DigitalRev / PCHstore / WexDE / WexUK

_ _ _

The XF10-24 was scheduled for March 15 release, but now AmazonUS postponed the expected availability of two weeks, to March 31th (BHphoto says just “April”)… a pretty long wait for a lens announced back in December 18th!

Now, according to dc.watch (translation), the reason for this further delay is that, worldwide, the lens sold better than expected, so Fuji has to produce more units to fulfill pre-orders. Believe it or not, here is also Fuji’s official press release.

I don’t know if it can help you to manage your impatience (or if it will make things worst), but in the meantime you can check out Rico’s X-T1 + 10-24 full size images (RAW’s converted with Iridient) at Flickr here.

X-T1 body only ($1,299): USA: AmazonUS / BHphoto / Adorama / Pictureline / EU: wexDE / wexUK / PCHstore /

    1. It’s a guess but here is why I think they can’t:

On the upcoming f/2.8 constant aperture zooms, I believe the full aperture range will be the same throughout the zoom range, 2.8-16 or 2.8-22 or something like that.

However, on this lens, it’s quite likely that the aperture range varies from 4-16 to 4-32 or something along those lines. If any aspect of the aperture range varies, it won’t work to have a marked aperture ring as it could be a lie.

      1. I dont get it, its a constant f/4 lens, aperture doesnt change even if you move along the 10mm to 24mm range

        1. It looks like it has a different maximum F/number. i.e at 10mm the max F/number might be f/16 but at 24mm it might be f/32. This does not affect the minimum F/number which will remain at f/2.8.

As such, it’s min is constant throughout the range.

          1. The tech sepcs on Fuji’s site state max apperture at F4 and min apperture at F22, so… NO, this can’t be the reason.

Maybe Fuji wanted to safe some money? Maybe they only want to have marked apperture stops on primes and premium zooms like the constant F2.8 ones? Maybe they forgot to put it in the productions specs?

I don’t know and I don’t get it. My beloved Panasonic LC1 had marked apperture stops on the lens although it didn’t have a constant apperture. Maybe I’m weird but I didn’t actually expect it to be F2 at the long end if this value was set on the apperture ring because I knew F2.4 is max zoomed in.

I think most Fuji buyers have at least basic knowledge of camera specs and behaviour – you have to be quite a geek to even find one in a shop around here – so they would probably get the concept and not expect F2.8 at 55mm on the 18-55mm but than again what do I know 🙁

Sorry for the rant, I just needed to get it of my chest. The lacking apperture markings are to me Fuji’s second biggest design flaw with their lenses. Second only to the total lack of an apperture ring on the ‘cheap’ zooms and the 27mm pancake. So much for UI uniformaty…

          2. Eh? Fuji website states that max aperture is f4, min aperture is f22, nothing about 10mm having a different min aperture than 24mm and Ive never heard of any lens having variable min aperture thats crazy

  1. That sounds … uhm … somewhat unbelievable.

Once upon quite recent the X100S were difficult to get. I can’t remember Fuji postponing the release though because they could not produce enough of them ALL AT ONCE.

    1. This has been delayed way too long!!! The entire system is well covered, double zooms in the 18-200mm range, plus so many primes, just no UWA!!!

I will just order the 14mm, use it and return it when the 10-24 comes out.
      Sorry. Damage is on you.

  2. So if 10-24 is so popular its delayed what about the X-T1. Due 7 March I think. Might be June as I suspect X-T1 will be much more popular than 10-24.

  3. I was looking forward to buying this lens.. but only after reading tests of it. I hope that this delay won’t affect testing procedures and that there will be some worthy information soon after release.

  4. An ultra wide angle, constant aperture, optically stabilized, wide range zoom is not an easy lens. It is certainly difficult to design and to manufacture (centering must be a nightmare).
I suspect this is the reason for this delay.

  5. That is the most funny explanation of a delay i have ever heard. Do they expect anybody to believe that?…………. really?!

    1. Guys, you have to understand how production lines work. It’s not as if Fuji has empty lines and they can just flip a switch and be making 1000 10-24mm lenses, then 1000 52mm lenses the next week then back to 1000 10-24mm lenses the week after that.

It takes a lot of planning a to get things organized so you don’t end up with 2,000 lenses and only 1,000 boxes, or lens caps, or owners manuals.

Let’s say I was expecting to need about 4,000 lenses to cover pre orders and to re-stock vendors for the next 6 months. If I suddenly find out I have pre-orders for all 4,000 lenses and I’ll need to make 6000 in the first run, it’s not as easy as just telling the product line to make 2000 extra.

I might only have been given the production line time to make 4,000 and you don’t want to get a production line going, make 4000 then shut it down to make something else and then start back up to make the final 2000 a few weeks later. So, instead of making 4000 and then having to switch over to 56mms for two weeks before going back to the 10-24s for another two weeks, I’ll move up the production of the 56mm lenses by a few weeks and then I can have six straight weeks to make the 6000 10-24s I need.

Of course all the numbers are just guesswork but I do have an idea of how production lines work. Someday we’ll have replicators, just not quite yet.

      1. Agreed, we have no information on how Fuji have organized their production lines. So far, I am very happy with the quality of the Fuji lenses and I very much hope they do not outsource production to a lowest-wage location.
Having said that, they must have planed for a (any, and maybe indeed too small) production number. They can or cannot produce that (too small) number and sell them. All other potential buyers will have to wait. So it seems logical that there is a design/production problem. No doubt they will solve it, but I really want that lens 🙂

  6. Since the company has yet to ship one, they have yet to sell one.

We have so much product that we didn’t sell yet that we aren’t going to sell any until we can make even more product for us not to sell yet. So please stop pre-ordering, or we will have to make more and more and more, and just hold off selling until you people stop pre-ordering. We will only ship product once you stop buying it. We can hold out all year if necessary.

  7. I’m a big fan of Made in Japan lenses (or Germany), no matter what manufacturers say about outsourced products my experience is Made in Japan is better then made in other Asian courtiers, my own company outsources and there’s a different attitude at a cross industry level, Japan is all about quality the other countries differential is cost. This reaches deep into the supply chain, so even if a individual company has a strong quality ethos it difficult. Firsthand experience, every business meeting in Japan starts with the word quality, everyone in other Asian countries starts with cost. Fuji has a facility in Japan and another in the Philippines. To many complaints or too much pressure and Fuji will move production of their high end lenses to that facility, it’s better to wait in my opinion and keep the niche Japanese uniqueness.

  8. Just wanted everyone to refrain from buying the 56mm 1.2, please, as I really want to get it as soon as possible. Thank you.

  9. I wanted this lens very badly for over a year. I picked up a Used Voigtlander 15mm a year ago to hold me over but in the summer I decided to bite the bullet and get the 14mm as. I wanted filters and to shoot some near IR. Sold the Voigtlander and picked up the 14mm in August. Glad i gave up waitng but I wish I got the Fuji 14mm first instead if the V15 since ebay fees really eat into the bottom line.

  10. Hallo Rico

Eines deiner letzten Flickerbilder sieht schon sehr nach Fisheye aus…
Ab welcher Brennweite treten denn die stürzenden Linien auf?

  11. This is going to be a great lens. The reviewers will confirm that. The only minus is for the X-T1 shooters: it’s not weather sealed. But I’m sure Fuji will not let them down and develop a weather sealed ultra-wide zoom (probably some 9-16 f2.8 with or without OIS) to form the weather sealed Holy Trinity of Fuji along the 16-55 f2.8 OIS and the 50-140 f2.8 OIS.

X-E2/E1 shooters are better served by the 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200.
