“Sharper than Japanese Steel […] it will leave the most pedantic pixel peepers speechless” XF 90mmF2 WR review at bokeh-monster!

XF90mmF2 WR
USA: AmazonUS / BHphoto / Adorama EU: AmazonDE / AmazonUK / AmazonFR / WexUK / PCHstore / AUS: Camerapro

The XF90mmF2 WR will soon fall into the hands of many X-shooters… and it might make them very very happy, since it is probably the best Fujinon lens so far… at least that’s the impression of those, who already had the chance to play with it, like Rico in his First Look and PhilippeVdp here.

Also bokeh-monster is blown away by the IQ of the XF 90mm.

“Bokeh quality and contrast sit somewhere between the standard 56mm lens and the 56mm APD.

[…]

The 90mm is sharp! Wide open, stopped down, flared, focused close or far, no matter how you use this lens it will leave even the most pedantic pixel perve speechless. So now comes the age old question, the one which has been bugging us since we started writing up this post: should you buy one?

If you are a prime lens photographer like us, no question about it. It is the best telephoto lens currently available and will be for quite some time.”

  1. I have my doubts about “it will leave even the most pedantic pixel perve speechless”. Those guys will always find some obscure thing to moan about!

    1. Yeah thats the internet and everyone thinks they have to say something even if they don’t have or want it.

  2. Looking forward to a comparison between the XF 90 f2 (on 16MP X-Trans) and the Zeiss Apo Sonnar 135 f2 (on Nikon D800E/D810, with roughly the same pixel density and no AA filter too).

      1. Lol! I was wondering if someone else have noticed that grip! 😀 I also wonder he is an aikido practitioner. Really weird and ugly details for keen eye and such great photos.

  3. Received my copy today (Germany) and am very happy with the AF performance so far. Speedy and precise, very close or equal to 2.8 zooms.

    1. Sadly, that won’t be happening until sometime in 2016…
That said, there are still a number of Fuji cameras that are capable of taking high-quality photos (from the X-Pro 1 to the X-T1).

    1. This is really a specialist portrait lens. If you make art or $$ with portraits, then it looks like the way to go.
If you want to do more, such as shooting a motorcycle rally or elk rutting then the 50-140mm is the lens.

      1. Whichever I get will be used for family portraits and vacation. No pro gigs. 🙂 I have used Canon 85mm with 7D before and I loved that combo. I might end up with 90mm. Let’s see.

        1. Get the 90.
You do not want to carry the humongous zoom on vacation and when leaving the house with your family. If you get a zoom for those purposes it should be the 55-200.
          Also the 90 is cheaper.

          1. For the price of the 50-140 you can actually buy the 90 and the 55-200, then you’d be quite well equiped for all of your purposes. You can save a lot of weight, when choosing one of them for a special occasion only and even if you carry both, it won’t be much more than the 50-140 alone.
I’ve had the 55-200 since it was available, but I have been missing a shallower DOF option. The 50-140 is prohibitive to me because of its sized and weight. Now I’ll most likely add the 90 to my setup.

  4. My main issue with this lens is the lack of OIS. I struggle a bit avoiding hand shake even with the 60mm 2.4.
Do people often use a monopod/tripod with unstabilized lenses at this focal length?
