Samyang says: “All our existing lenses will have X-mount in future”

 photo samyang_zps62100f9b.jpg

Now, time for a rumor update to what belongs Samyang’s X-mount lens lineup.

In late August photorumors said that there would be a Samyang 12mm f/2.0 lens for Fuji X-mount. I checked Samyang’s website and there was another lens listed, the 10mm f/2.8. Anyway, photorumors confirmed: the Samyang 12mm will come too. That’s good to know.

But what is the situation now? The 10mm f/2.8 disappeared from the Samyang lens lineup (as you can see from the screenshot here, it was still up in late August).

But here is the good news: According to a facebook comment of Samyang Asia all the existing lenses will have X Mount in future! At Trenton’s question if there is any release roadmap for the X-mount lenses, Samyang answered: “Will be available soon!”

At the moment, the X-mount lenses of Samyang are:

Samyang 8mm: [shopcountry 12946]
Samyang 300mm mirror lens: [shopcountry 14844]
Samyang 16mm f/2.0: [shopcountry 15934]
Samyang 24mm f/3.5 Tilt Shift: [shopcountry 15963]

To see the whole interchangeable lens lineup of Samyang visit their website here. Check it out and tell us which of the existing “non X-mount” Samyang lenses you’d consider to pruchase once it gets the X-mount!

thanks Trenton!

cheers

P.S.: Sigma, where are you? 😉

  1. Sounds good in theory, but in the case of Samyang these lenses are also available for SLRs… which means they are much heavier and larger than they need to be when used with the X system.

    1. With all due respect, it seems as if there are a fair amount of members here that don’t have an issue with size when it comes to lenses. I happen to think that fuji themselves should focus on lenses that keep size and weight a priority and in continuity with the camera bodies, and let adapters and/or other manufacturers focus on making specialty glass that includes super-tele, fast zooms and primes but man oh man does that raise a fuss with some folks here.

It’s more important to me to see fuji remain a viable player in this market segment by concentrating on portability and quality, rather than allocating R&D into exotic and highly specialized glass that only a small portion of users would actually buy. A T/S lens at the right focal length would be useful to some (I would buy one) but certainly not as popular as a standard prime of equivalent focal length. Ditto fisheye, 200-400 zooms and f/2.8 primes of 200, 300mm and longer.

If another company like Samyang wants to dabble in that type of glass I think that’s great. But there are other lenses fuji should focus on that can help turn the loss on camera sales in a more positive direction.

    2. Of course. A native X mount T/S would still be huge because the image circle has to be significantly larger than the sensor size to allow for movement of the lens. Some of the Samyang offerings (like the T/S and fisheye) will likely never be offered by Fujifilm or Zeiss, so having the choice of Samyang is a good thing, even if there is added bulk. Adapters are a hassle and good ones cost a fortune.

    3. That shiny silver ring on a fisheye isn’t an “adapter” per se, there are optical elements inside of it all the way to the back (I own one of these, sweet lens). The glass goes almost as deep in the mount as 18-55’s rear element does. So it’s not an empty tube.

Of course it would be fantastic to have some third-party lenses designed specifically to take advantage of X-system’s short flange focal distance, but let’s face it: no one will bother. The X-glass market just isn’t big enough to bother. Even Zeiss “adapted” an E-mount glass for their XF lineup (and then seemingly abandoned the whole gig).

So… I think, any “adapted” “crop”-sized lens will do for now. Especially if it’s a good glass.

      Hallelujah Samyang!

      1. Well yeah, crop-sized lenses are acceptable, but the story was about all the other Samyang lenses getting x-mount which are (all?) SLR (or m4/3 that won’t fit). Do they even have a CPU for the lens data ? Otherwise, i would get Nikon mount anyway so i can easily sell it (or use it on anything else!) if i wanted to. People are even using Zeiss ZF.2 lenses on Canon for the same reason.

Anyway, you’re saying the elements are further back than the original 8mm? I just can’t believe that, it should be exactly as shown here, only with the mount extended:
        http://www.lenstip.com/347.3-Lens_review-Samyang_8_mm_f_2.8_UMC_Fisheye_Build_quality.html

        1. Your image looks correct, but no “mount extended”. The rear element of my fisheye sits about 3-4mm deep from the rear edge of the mount. Oh, and of course there’s no electronic connection, so no EXIF and no aperture control. No AF either (who needs an AF fisheye anyway?!)

Now, speaking of “adapted” lenses… A tack sharp lens with an “adapter” included for half of the price of the Nikon glass without adapter? I think it’s a sweet deal.

And my X-system feels much more complete with the fisheye now. No need for electronic controls on a fisheye (or a tilt-shift, if that’s your favorite poison).

Also from my experience, Samyang glass is WAY better than almost any “film” glass with an adapter. Sharper. Less coma. Less flare. Less astigmatism. Etc, etc, etc. I am keeping my fisheye even if Fuji finally makes a native one.

But 85/1.4 is a different story, I’d like to see a decent AF with this lens… which is unlikely, in case of Samyang.

          1. Again, the 8mm was a bad example as it is basically the only one that does makes sense to use, it’s just the one i remembered seeing in such a shoddy xmount afterthought.

Lens data is more than convenient, the ZF.2 lenses have it, and this would be the only benefit of having samyang do the conversion instead of using a adapter without electronics. But apparently, no benefit at all then.

Anwyay, you’re going way off track here. Only trying to calm people down as they seem to get their hopes up again about samyang making lenses ‘for us’, when time and time again ppl fail to realize how very short the x-mount is, and how much more pace slr glass will need to add. So much that even a pancake would end up bigger than the 35/1.4 in best case scenario, but of course the ones in question are far from pancake already. I’m not discussing size here or anything else, just saying the glass they jump up and down for is already here, and arguably a better buy in the first place – if one was forced to choose. That’s all.

          2. Allright, I might be “way off track” (what track, by the way?). I’m just really glad that we’re starting to see a variety of options on the X-market.

          3. Bingo.

I like the idea of the simplicity of a Fuji X-mount TS, but with the Samyang and, say, an XF-Nikon F adapter AND the Metabones XF-Nikon G speed booster (shooting at crop and “full”) I’ve now effectively got *two* TS lenses for roughly half what the Nikon lens alone would cost.

For someone dabbling in architectural work that’s a pretty cost-effective entry point on the X system.

    4. Since you linked to my photo on Flickr let me chime in. At least in respect to the 8mm f2.8 lens there would have been absolutely no point in making it native in order to make it smaller. My biggest problem with the Samyang 8mm lens is that it is too short!

The way I hold my camera (X-Pro 1) with the left hand supporting the lens and thumb plus indexfinger wrapped around the focus wheel it is almost impossible not to get part of my middle finger into the frame at 180° FOV.

So at least for this lens a more native approach would not make sense.

And aside from my usability problem with this lens beeing a bit too short, it creates wonderful image quality:

  2. Or use a speed booster / focal reducer (0.71x factor, get full frame view and depth of field on your APS-C + 1EV of speed!) Pentax-K to Fuji X, and mount any full frame Samyang lenses in Pentax K mount 🙂

  3. I do not think this is very exciting at all.

One can already use them with adapters. As many said, those are SLR lenses which are both too large/ heavy. They are also not on par qualitywise with the Fujinons. Not bad, specially for the price, but manual focus and bit & heavy. I had the 85/1,4, it did nothing for me and resold it quickly. Sunshade fell off constantly.
I’d love however to see a few good Sigma lenses for X with AF and great quality. Something where Fuji still has holes in the lineup, like 90/2,x or even longer.

  4. Where or where is that 10mm X mount????

Only Samyang superwides interest me. The Samyang 12 may be on interest to replace the Fuji 14. The Fuji 14 is a fantastic performer optically. I am crazy about that lens…but their ‘loose goose aperture ring’ ruins their 14 lens. I have to use gaffers tape to keep my f stops from moving.

I also like the up front zone focus marking on the Samyang lenses. I shoot zone focus a lot. The Fuji hides the zone markings when the ring is pulled out for manual focus. Fuji makes it soooo tough on us street photographers. Whomever designed the ‘focus by wire fiasco’ must not be a street photographer.

My forthcoming book was shoot 90% with Samyang lenses and Fuji X. (nude warning)

Samyangs’ are beautiful little gems!! Just get that 10mm out Samyang!!
