Rumor Update: 2/3 inch sensor not for X-entry level camera (X-S2 according to an anonymous source)

digicame-info wrote me an email. They told me that the 2/3 inch X-TRANS sensor camera is not the X-entry level camera rumored before, but another product [UPDATE: 2/3 inch sensor mirrorless camera].

Now, this let’s me think about a rumor I’ve received a few days ago, anonymously via rumor box. A single line: “X-S2 with x20 tech over 1 month“. Just this, nothing more. I wanted to check it, before I post it, but now, with digicame-info saying that a new camera with a 2/3 inch sensor is about to be released this summer, I thought it’s time to post it… let’s put the pieces of this rumor puzzle together.

I hope I can bring some order in these rumor days soon. But, the good news is, that there are still some more Fuji-cameras to come next.

Have a good start in this new week

    1. This isn’t going to happen. It’s a either a new fixed-lens camera (possible, makes sense) or a completely new system made for budget market which doesn’t make any sense at all due to low profit margins and existence of strong competitors (m4/3, nikon1). I don’t believe that it can possibly be a new system. No way.

    1. Even Nikon 1 has a larger sensor (1″), it would be more like something in between Nikon 1 the Pentax Q.
Looking for market share with a new interchangeable lenses system just to make the difference?
Unless Fujifilm has a new and revolutionary and secret sensor technology, able to rapidly change consumer’s minds, this could be a very expensive and risky move in a market were cell phones are fighting compacts and other kind of consumers favor larger sensors.

  1. An x trans x-s2 makes sense. I hope the entry level interchangeable lens model is aps sized. If this is the case then Fuji will be following a similar strategy to the pen series. Same sensor but different price points/markets.

  2. Digital Camera Info specifies that the camera equipped with a 2/3″ sensor which is to be announced this summer is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, not a fixed lens camera such as the X-S1 and its rumoured successor the X-S2, and that it would come in between Pentax Q/Q10 (1/2.3″ sensor) and Nikon 1 (1″ sensor).

We could therefore be speaking about three cameras to be announced in the next months:

    1. The entry level, APS-C sensor, X-mount Fujifilm “X-M1″
    2. A brand new system camera with interchangeable lenses, a 2/3” sensor and probably a new mount
    3. The successor to X-S1, the X-S2 (bridge camera with superzoom).

  3. Why would they not keep the 1 2/3″ sensor or go even larger?
I always thought the XS-1 would have been a killer camera if they had put in a bit larger sensor and not fought the mega super zoom war.
I have the S100fs and loved it.

  4. Put the X-20 sensor in the X-S1 and I’ll buy one tomorrow. While the IQ will be slightly lower (which is why I’ve not replaced my X-10 with the X-20), this sensor should solve the focusing problems of the X-S1.

While there are certainly other things I’d like them to fix: bracketing, shutter, slow writing of RAW images, buffer size, lens droop; this one change would make a sale at $800 street price. Fix the others and I’ll pay $1000. Fuji, do you want a deposit?

Note to S200 user: I’ve owned both the S100 & S200 and used a friends X-S1 and the X-S1 is superior in every way: IQ, focusing, handling, etc. Even the lens with the longer zoom range is sharper and that surprised me to no end.

    1. Thank you for all the info. I own an S205 and X-E1. I will keep S205 until X-S2 is out. I will keep the X-S2 until a tele zoom lense is out for X-E1, like 18-135.

  5. Hopes the X-S2 comes soon,

    pretty please,
and instead of tilting screen … an articulated joint like the Sony SLT-A77

    1. No, no, Fuji whatever you intend to do. please keep the tilting screen ! It is so much nicer to work with. The articulated joints move the screen out of the optical axis – very awkward for most scenarios !
