FIRST OFF: Thanks a lot, Etienne (blog) for the samples and your impressions.
Check out his blog about 1 year travel he did with his Fujis here at pack2life!
We are still waiting for Fujifilm to upload their official samples… so in the meantime you can find some on Fujirumors. This time it’s FR-reader Etienne, who shared with us some of his samples taken with the upcoming XF 50-140mm f/2.8 OIS WR and XF 56mm f/1.2 APD
I’ll just share one low resolution image (with crop) taken with the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 OIS WR at 140 f/2.8 (above) and one shot with the XF 56mm f/1.2 APD (at the bottom). For all the full resolution samples, download them at dropbox here. The samples are really very sharp!
He also send us 3 things he has noticed during this event:
-
the 90mm is really huge compared to the 56mm (ok the 140-400mm is even bigger but not too long for this range)
-
the tripod collar of the preproduction 50-140mm can’t be entirely removed of the lens. The collar will stay but you can “only” remove the L shape part that is attached to the tripod (with 2 screws). It is actually different from the Canon 70-200mm f/4 I had in the past (no screws like this). I don’t know if it is going to be the same thing on the final model. I don’t really like it this way.
-
the electronic shutter once activated made the X.T1 a perfect silence camera (I tried that on the graphite X-T1).
Also the threeguyswithcameras was at the event, and they posted their samples and impressions here.

Thanks, Patrick for the samples. Now we have a clearer idea about those upcoming Fujinon lenses.
You’re welcome… and especially thanks to Etienne and also to the reader who shared its images (and the X-Pro2 rumor) yesterday for the samples
Thank you Patrick for running this great website 🙂
very nice, better than i expected
Finally properly shot samples! Are these SOOC jpegs?
yep. I took the pics.
Thanks, Etienne! Much appreciated.
Merci beaucoup, Etienne! C’est tres gentil!
Much much better, nice Etienne and thank you. Question: how was the image stabilization? Did you try in low light and how was it there? Many thanks.
I tried taking pictures with and without OIS at 140mm. I can tell you, it’s really effective! Might allow to save at least 4 stops (Fuji claims 5 stops). Found it more efficient that on my 55-200mm.
I haven’t been able to try the lens in low light… it’s too sunny in Singapore ^^
Last thing the autofocus speed looked really good but I would have needed more time to test it.
For information, it was a preproduction model of the lens.
Cheers!
Very interesting bokeh – in some if the busier background shots the blurring almost looks ‘glass’ like, like looking through a window that has that dimpled privacy glass.
Wow…..280mm f5.6 and this is it! There is no choise if you want to use shallower DOF. Thats a big big limitation. Pics look decent on my iPhone.
Again, how to stupid shenkie is,
This is APSC – 140mm will become 210mm equivalent on FF but the aperture still remain F2.8
Have you ever take a picture even with an iphone?
The maximum aperture remains f2.8 in terms of transmission efficiency, but in terms of depth of field will become approximately f4.
You got it all wrong dude 🙂
Fully agreed Johan 🙂
My guess is that this guy is anti-Four Thirds. 😛
I was really looking forward to this lens, but that price is crazy! I am in need of a 70-200 2.8 (or equiv) but that is the same price as the Sigma I can get for my Nikon D610. Not sure how I can justify that purchase even considering my love for the X-E1.
I suppose it just boils down to what you want your workhorse to be. The 70-200 focal range is where I usually make my money.
Thats what is tough. The D610 is a fully capable professional tool. Clean images, tight controls, fast focus….but something about my Fuji files seem so much more…lifelike or maybe authentic is the word I am looking for. If it wasn’t for the lack of video on Fuji I would be all in. It’s not like Fuji is a stranger to the video world.
…good lord… …that shnoz is what’s truly tack sharp…
Lol I’m officially gonna lose my mind if I see someone who judged this lens on the first batch sample shots. This lens looks very promising…
Hi,
yes, the lens is expensive, the lens is bigger than I appreciate, but hell! The 50-140 looks like I super sharp lens too.
As I always say: There is no lunch for free … it’s a pity, but it’s true.
And a 70-200 was always a very particular lens and not suitable for everyone. So is the 50-140. Many will go better with the 50-200 or the 140-400 when we are talking about really long focal length … but a 70-200 large aperture lens is just so … “professional” and therefore many people who do not really need it lust for it but are unhappy about the price and the size. On the other side many people will happily take it for the price and will give a damn sh* on the size, because they need it.
Daniel
Well, the thing is that this lens is actually heavier than some FF 70-200 f4s. No wonder some people complain if you came to mirrorless for weight and size savings and end up with almost the same weight as a FF DSLR kit.
One of the most important things that makes a 70-200/2.8 “professional” is its soulmate, the 1.4x teleconverter. Let’s see the lens roadmap, when should we expect one? Oh wait…
Why does the 50-140 have to be almost 250 grams heavier than the canon 70-200 f4 L IS considering they are basically the same lens equivalents? (and don’t tell me it is optical performance, the 70 200 is already a stellar performer) And the 90mm f2 being so huge also seems a little bit odd when seeing lenses like the samsung 85mm 1.4 being essentially the same size. Now a X-T1 + 50-140 combo will weigh 1435g while a 6D + 70-200 f4 will be at around 1530g (both combos excluding the tripod collar), that’s not a really great difference considering you will have a worse balanced option with the Fuji. I think Fuji should not forget the smaller more compact lenses like the 18 f2 and 35 1.4 even if that means sacrificing a little optical quality for the loss of weight and size….
Am I the only one on Earth to find more important when speaking of Aperture that the actual gain of speed (f/2.8 is twice more faster than f/2.8 whatever the size of your sensor) than a shallower DOF???
Comparing the Canon 70-200mm f/4 on a 6D (I had and loved this lens) to a Fuji 50-140mm f/2.8 makes only sense in terms of range. I do prefer the 2nd option 🙂
1. Look at my business website (which I am redesigning myself), read “WARNING: DEBUG sanity check. DEBUG = “0”. Recommended range: 0 (Default: 0)”.
2. Go to FR, read “f/2.8 is twice more faster than f/2.8 whatever the size of your sensor”.
Great, now I have a brainbleed! %)
Probably part of the weight is hidden in full metal barrel. Canikon 70-200/4 are partly plastic.
50-140 is a bokeh fail. It’s totally neutral. I’m used to great bokeh of Nikkor 70-200/2.8. And this 50-140 looks more like nikkor 70-200/4 neutral bokeh. On the other hand, in terms of DOF this 50-140 is analog of 70-200/4. Well, I’m sure there will be no 50-140/2 so we need to wait more to get tele portrait lens. I’d like to get a lens longer than 90. Something like 135/2.8
I don’t quite understand what you’re trying to say. You say you want something longer than 90mm, “something like 135/2.8”. The 50-“140” is a 2.8 but you’re complaining about the bokeh it produces from the few sample shots provided? What makes you think having a 135 f2.8 prime will provide better background blur?
50-140/2.8 is an action lens in the first place. I’d say the most important specification of this kind of lens is autofocus speed and wide open sharpness. Bokeh is welcome but secondary parameter. Thus I’d like to have another tele lens. A portrait one designed to have great bokeh. Similarly to 56/1.2. Even the standard version is superb.
Lens looks good. One comment about the shooter. When I shoot portrait particularly of a female, it’s my job to make the model look good. These shots look like sh*** the way she is posed :(. I could care less if you just test shoot it.
Haha thanks for the tip Phil. I am not a portrait shooter. And sorry I was more focused on trying the lense itself than trying to make the model look good. Anyway please feel free to give me other advise on my pictures here: http://www.pack2life.com/nos-photos/
Do I see waxy skin tones ? Oh wait, the ISO is to low for that !
To me she looks like cleopatra, very interesting!
