New Zoom Lens Patent: Fujinon 18-250mm f/3.5-6.5

 photo zoomlens_zpsc0765d03.jpg

Just a flash: a patent spotted by mirrorlessrumors at freepatentsonline here shows a new zoom lens, 18-250mm f/3.5-6.5. Would you be interested to add such a lens to your X-system?

  1. Would be interested to see how small they can make this. Love my 18-200 from Nikon but now with the Fuji T-X1 I need something to replace it for travel. I know it’s just a dream but can someone please make a 18-200 2.8 – X lens. For now I would settle for a 90mm or 105mm 2.0 macro lens.

    1. In my opinion, the upcoming weather sealed 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 should be a better option for travel. It would compromise less with the optics and give your X-T1 a weather sealed lens as a very nice bonus, not the least for travel and unpredictable weather. The 135-200mm range is actually a pretty short distance, comparable to 35-50mm or 50-75mm as for what it does to the field of view.

I think it would seem like a bit of a waste to put this on an X-T1 where you’ve already spent quite some cash to get, especially if this 18-250mm won’t be weather sealed (pretty unlikely if you ask me) and you paid in part for that boon. A camera will never be better than the lenses used with it.

  2. No interest at all in such glass. I’m hoping they do something in the 120 or 200 to 400mm zoom. F/4 is ok. Or a nice long prime telephoto.

  3. f/3.5 gets by, f/6.5 is really really slow; and such a large range implies a lot of compromises. I guess proof would be in the pudding as always but unless this lens proves to be a real surprise it would not be for me, but I guess quite a few of us might be interested.

In my Nikon days the lens I preferred using for “light” travel was the 24-120 f/4 VR : versatile, not too heavy, Good quality (but still with it’s faults) Good enough range that’s the kind of lens I wish Fuji could provide, considering their skills at manufacturing remarquable lenses

  4. I’d like to see a decent weather sealed macro 105mm. The full range zooms don’t really appeal to me, do love the 10-24mm f/4 though, it is a sweet piece of glass.

  5. I just moved from my bulky DSLR and its (among others) 18-200mm. Never again. While convenient, if you want convenience above quality, I think there are _much_ better options around than putting a catch-all lens on an APS-C interchangeable lens body. That’s at least my $800 lesson learnt.

      1. Oh, I do believe DSLR’s have their place! It’s just a catch-all lens like this on a DSLR that I question.

An interchangeable lens camera can’t be made as small as one with it built-in, and the worse optical quality due to the common compromises in a lens like this make me question if the end result is really that much better than, say, a micro 4/3 camera or even smaller like a Sony RX10. I mean, you’re instantly thrown out of “impressive quality” territory and it also gets slow, so what’s the point? Especially from a convenience perspective…

But I have no problem with DSLR’s themselves. Just this particular combo. I don’t really understand it in hindsight, now that I’ve seen and used it myself.

  6. This all depends on the size. If the size is compact, it could make a good travel lens. Got to keep the image quality good, otherwise ti will be relegated to the low end systems.

Used the Tamron 18-270 on my Nkon for a long time as a travel camera before moving to mirrorless, Image quality was good, but not great, but at the time it made is super easy just to take that camera and lens for travel. But know my X-T1 with the 18-55 and the 55-200 are smaller, lighter and offer much superior image quality. Put them in the Think Tank Mirrorles Mover 20 with extra batteries and a flash and it still is far easier to cary

All that being said, I would be willing to give it a try if the price was right.

  7. No. Not interested. I shoot at long focal lengths – longer than 50mm (ff format) less than 10% of the time! and for that I already have the 55-200mm lens. And it’s way too slow!

  8. I don’t think I would be interested. I would rather need a pro level long lens (for example a 120 – 400 / 4 WR OIS), a longish macro lens (for example 100 mm / 2.8) which can go 1:1, extension tubes and multiplier (1.4 x).

  9. Geez, just like a Nikon super zoom. Not exactly a bad idea but I hope they don’t make one until they fill out more essential lenses like a 1:1 macro and super telephoto.

    1. I *so* agree with this!

The only reason why I still have not bought a Sony NEX is that a) the Zeiss 16-70 is said to be mediocre (still waiting on the photozone.de review) b) it is *expensive* and c) I just couldn’t be enthusiastic about the cameras.

    2. Or the same that you said, but f1.8 on both instead. 😉 and you will always be able to shut the aperture as much as you want.

  10. We need a 200-400 f/4 OIS with built in 1.4 extender (300 – 600 – 840 effective) just like the Canon version, only for the Fuji X mount.

    1. No, Fuji doesn’t need that. They need an 80-400 f4-5.6 telephoto really. Canon’s costs way too much and Fuji’s wouldn’t be any cheaper.

    2. Not if you are replacing your Canon 300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 500mm f/4, 600mm f/4, 800mm f/5.6 and 200-400 f/4 with just one Fuji telephoto lens.

    3. “We need”….no maybe more like you need. If thats the kind of lens you need then you probably should not have gotten an X-mount camera.

  11. It’s a nice all in one travel range, but kind of slow on the tele end.
I’ve got a sigma like this on my Canon SL1. It is fun.

  12. That’s a great lens to sell to the X-A1 X-M1 owners…
They will think this a great lens & hopefully it will sell well
And that means Fuji will make more profit (or lose less money)
That will let Fuji produce other quality lens for X-Po1, X-E1/2 & X-T1 users…

  13. At this point, it’s nothing more than a patent filing — doesn’t mean they’ll produce the lens anytime soon.

  14. fuji have to make a perspective control lens, and after that then finally cover almost all pro needs. They can be the first to do that in apc-c world

  15. Senseless. 85mm or 90mm ,f1.4 or f2 lens , please. 10-24+ 55-200 is better travel kit than 18-250.

  16. They’d better make some fast zoom instead. What about one of these 70-200 2.8? Or some shorter range and even faster? I’d also like to see a 85/1.8. They could start making lens that are compatible with full frame as well.

    1. According to the X mount lens roadmap they are releasing a 50-140mm/2.8 at the end of 2014 which provides roughly 75-210mm equivalent focal length. the 85mm equivalent is already out: the 56mm/1.2

I’m personally more excited to see what the “fast wide angle” will be hopefully a 16mm/2.0 or even better, a 16mm/1.4 if that’s even possible.

  17. The lens diagram shows an integrated shutter, so this wouldn’t be for X-mount, it would be for a camera with a permanent lens, like the X100 or one of the compacts.

    1. Isn’t there anyway that the camera would be able to chose which shutter to use if the lens includes one? (probably a silly question)

  18. No thank you. Please bring out the 16-55/2.8 with a working O.I.S. (as opposed to the 18-55/2.8-4, which sometimes has problems with O.I.S.) and the 16/1.4 instead.
