It’s pretty sure now: 2 years after it’s release, the Fujfiilm X-E2 will get a new firmware update. It should be released in about 6 months from now (October-November).
Also, the X-T1 firmware 4.0, which was rumored to come on June 18, will very likely be delayed to June 22.
Feel free to discuss the X-E2 firmware topic (and much more) at our new Fuji X Forum

Hope to see it soon!
Japanese source, source right in the past, or other?
multiple sources 😉
and people wonder why the term kaizen has become associated with firmware update. isn’t this an irresponsible abuse of buzzwords?
Get a life.
ok, i’ll shut up
Most products these days do contain some sort of software to make it work. That software is about 80% of the product while the components its made of, is just 20% of the product.
So yes Firmware in modern cameras is more important then ever.
Without it, you would be left with an analog device that doesn’t work.
It’s improvement or improve in Japanese. I don’t think you can’t make it a goal, which you could associate it with fw.
the kaizen is good when it’s for everyone! We want the firmware update for the X100S! Came on fuji…
Kaizen means change for better. In the west we associate it with continuous improvement. Not a buzzword. Seems to fit well.
And yet no support for X100S.
I think Fuji waits for me to schedule my vacation and then pushes back their release dates accordingly… 🙂
After receiving my X-T1 over a year ago, I will, once again, have a somewhat new camera in 19 days. 🙂
Dam… really need it by that weekend….
X-E2 will receive firmware update a few moth after X-Pro2 release (September?), so probably around December. The question is what features new firmware will bring, hope all X-T1 got (with new one), it may happen because X-T2 is on the corner (about March 2016). But more important question for me is what features and tech X-Pro2 will have to compete with new “high end” Sony A7000 because one of them I am going to buy.
Patrick, any details what will this update contain? The last time we got somethink what I would call “the super light” version of the update (without 1/32000 shooter speed and other nice features) 🙁
As someone also hoping / waiting for an X100S FW upgrade I disagree: Kaizen is always good.
It’s kind of annoying when it seems random which camera is updated and which isn’t but I’m still very happy for everyone who gets this update.
for the X-E2, electronic shutter would be awesome and better low light focus
So you are saying no one should get an update unless you get one.
How do you figure? If a camera is capable of taking great pictures today, it will still be able to take great pictures 5-10 years from now without any updates.
Eva was pointing the fact that a large chunk of the product is software based; not talking about must have updates
Sounds like great news.
6 months? Must have some neat features included.
That is interesting news. So the folks who said the X-10 is the replacement for the X-E2 are probably wrong. I can’t see Fuji announcing a FW update in 6 months if the camera is not going to be a current model for a while. It looks like the two will be sold side by side with shape being the main difference. That would be interesting to Fuji marketing I would imagine. Wonder whether they will keep to the same introduction schedule. FujiPro2 this year, X-E3 around the beginning of next year, and then the X-T2 later in 2016? Maybe they will switch the order according to the updates. X-T2 first and then the X-E3 in 6 months followed by an X-T20.
What this STILL means is that please use/buy the X-T1 or X-T10 if you want the latest and greatest. We MAY give you some (but not necessarily all) of the features of these cameras for the X-E2.
Fuji is doing the same thing as Olympus, deprecating the “rangefinder-like” cameras and promoting the DSLR-like bodies instead.
“Please” means nothing for users who do not like at all DSLR-like bodies T-X1, T-X10 but only RF type cames and they will rather wait for X-Pro2 or move for new Sony RF A7000 or Panasonic RF GX8 if Fuji will depreciate RF type cams. I would not pay $500 for X-T1, and even not $200 for X-T10 because I do not like them – centered EVF on small body with nose on thumb and LCD all the time. It’s irritated while shooting.
6 months? It will come with a new sensor for sure
WTF is up with that? Fuji is starting to really suck.
the one firmware update i’d like to see for the xe2 is the ability to print wirelessly to the instax printer
If the X-E2 could print wirelessly to an Instax printer (or a ZINK one) that might make me buy one of ’em. Would be great on vacation with family (here, have a print!) and be fun in general, plus handy.
Would like to see manual peak focus assist on the camera remote app, it does not seem to transmit that information when viewed on a tablet
Improvements in the AF function like the XT-10 would be very welcome!
But what about some minor changes that would improve the handling of the X-E2, like:
Easy accessable flash compensation (e.g. by turning the command dial while pressing the flash button)
Exposure compensation in full manual mode
Allow custom names for the custom settings
Slight re-ordering of the Q-menu: ‘image size’ and ‘image quality’ could make place for some functions more usefull in a quick menu, e.g. ‘EVF/LCD setting’
Even better, allow the ‘EVF/LCD setting’ to be assigned to a customizable button.
These changes don’t seem like rocket science to me, but I would be very happy if these could make it to the rumoured firmware update!
Queue the whiny babies whining about what they don’t get and what’s not enough and how Fuji sucks for doing anything except exactly what they want.
I don’t agree with those commentators but I fully understand their frustration.
What I don’t understand is the motivation behind your need to insult fellow photographers and Fuji users.
Dude, you’re a massive douche. Fuji has a reputation for A: not moving ahead or with the curve and B: Updating camera’s firmware to give it the best output it can possibly have. The IQ and build is excellent, but it’s also about usability. I spent 1300 on my X100S and it’s only seen one update before they started churning out the 100T.
Perhaps Fuji should just release a maximum camera and wait a few years to release the new versions. But they $ee $$$$.
The x100s is just as useable today as it was when you bought it. If you weren’t happy with usability originally you shouldn’t have bought it. Don’t spend that type of money hoping that it will somehow change into something better in the future.
I have the x100t and I can know fine well there will be a replacement…. and…. there maybe no updates at all for it! But that won’t change what was then and still is a great camera.
You’re absolutely right about being a usable and great camera. Fuji just doesn’t focus on making solid and much needed improvements versus selling newer, slightly updated models.
I can deal with Apple pulling that bullshit. I don’t need a new and slightly updated phone for making calls. But when it comes to making art, and advanced camera that helps me get a better shot/ faster is key in some situations.
I love my cameras. I just wish Fuji would focus more on making the ultimate instead of a refresh of the same guts every year.
I’m sitting here reading this on my 4-year-old iMac running the newest OS and with a 4-year-old iPhone running the newest OS in my pocket.
So it’s pretty funny that of all computer and phone manufacturers you name the one that is known for its spectacular support of old models and repeatedly updating the software (for free!) for years. Yes, they release updated models once a year, but the quality of the old models and the continuous OS updates makes the updates irrelevant because my phone still does everything I need.
At the same time I’m sitting here with my just over 2-year-old X100S and feeling left behind with some pretty embarrassing software quirks like EC not working in manual mode with Auto ISO. Great example 😉
That’s such a BS argument. Sadly people here repeat is so much.
When I switched from D200 to D7000 I hated the ISO button which was too close to the QUAL button and so I sometimes accidentally switched to JPEG. Did it keep me from buying the camera? No. There were too many other aspects which were an improvement.
When I bought the X100S I knew is wasn’t up to the usability I was used from Nikon but I was willing to deal with that because I loved and love so many other things about it. But because of Fuji’s reputation I had hopes that they would make the software better through FW updates.
Thing is, every camera involves making compromises. No camera is perfect. Photographers have accepted that they pay a lot too much for improvements that are often just software related. And they even go as far as insulting and dissing fellow photographers who don’t accept that situation. Sad world. And just to repeat myself: I absolutely expect to pay for FW upgrades like we used to always do on the computer, so no, I don’t just want everything for free.
I think I’ll just start dissing those waiting for the X-Pro2: “Why did you buy the X-Pro1 if you weren’t happy with it? Fuji never promised you to make a successor! It wasn’t a bullet point on the box was it? You whiny babies!”
And one last thing: bugs and usability quirks are often not so easy to spot and not everyone has the ability to test a camera for days and “in action” before making a buying decision. Oh, you didn’t notice that EC doesn’t work in manual mode when you looked at the X100S in the store? Tough luck. You didn’t notice that the camera has problems reading images when your Mac wrote a few additional files on it? Oh well, live with it.
*yawn* Very predictable of the “Entitled Society” we now live in.
Let’s make one thing clear. I hope they continue providing FW upgrades. This is a good thing. BUT, I won’t get angry or upset when they don’t give freebies after I buy a camera.
When I buy an Audi A3, I don’t expect it to have the same features as the A6. I don’t even expect them to come a long 1 year later and add new features found in the latest versions of the A3 that are just software tweaks in the ECU.
“When I bought the X100S I knew is wasn’t up to the usability I was used from Nikon but I was willing to deal with that because I loved and love so many other things about it. But because of Fuji’s reputation I had hopes that they would make the software better through FW updates.”
You accepted it’s flaws from the start and hoped for it to be made better. Then, you complain because they don’t deliver something YOU expected even though they never promised it?!?
Amazon = 30 days return policy. Use, test = keep if happy, return if not.
I’ve spent in the region of £8,000 on fuji gear for the business and each time I test each piece of kit. If it doesn’t do the job, it goes back. End of. I don’t buy their gear because I love them, I buy it because it does the job AS IS.
From using Canon 20D through to their 5Dmkii they only ever dealt with bugs in FW, and that’s to be expected. If you expect new features to be added after you buy something when there are no promises it will happen, you’re fooling yourself. Blame yourself and not others (or the company) for making the wrong initial decision.
When someone starts their “argument” with an insult it’s usually a pretty good indication that their arguments are not the best. You have no idea about me but are very quick to judge my friend…
“Let’s make one thing clear. I hope they continue providing FW upgrades. This is a good thing. BUT, I won’t get angry or upset when they don’t give freebies after I buy a camera.”
Good, we agree on that one. I don’t expect any freebies either. If you had read my reply you would have seen that I am absolutely willing to pay for an update. But I’m not selling my used X100S to buy a used X100T for some software updates. Yes, some hardware has changed as well but that is not worth the upgrade for me. I’d pay at least 350€ for the upgrade which in my opinion is way too much for customisable buttons, EC in M mode and direct AF point selection (my main wishes). I can update Lightroom from LR 4 to LR 6 for 74€, which is a much larger and more complex application. Don’t you agree 350€ is a bit too much for some software changes? Yeah, I get other things but I don’t need those so I won’t update to the T.
“When I buy an Audi A3, I don’t expect it to have the same features as the A6.”
Well, obviously.
“I don’t even expect them to come a long 1 year later and add new features found in the latest versions of the A3 that are just software tweaks in the ECU.”
I never said Audi does it right.
“You accepted it’s flaws from the start and hoped for it to be made better. Then, you complain because they don’t deliver something YOU expected even though they never promised it?!?”
I write “hope” and you quote “expected”. How are we gonna have a serious conversation like that?
“Amazon = 30 days return policy. Use, test = keep if happy, return if not.”
Yep, great option if you can afford new.

I didn’t make the wrong decision. I love my X100S. Some things about it bug me and when I use my dad’s X30 and see that all those things have been resolved now, I am annoyed that Fuji isn’t offering a paid FW upgrade.
I believe that software and hardware are two separate things. They should be treated that way. I only ever had to update my computer for a new OS when the hardware wasn’t up to the performance requirements. If a company needs to artificially cripple fully capable hardware (like my X100S) by not offering updates to sell more of the new model it just goes to show that they’re not innovating enough in hardware. Same sensor, processor, screen, EVF from several years ago anybody? Oh, you added Wifi? Great! I mean, that’s freaking innovative!
Don’t get me wrong. I love my Fuji. And I didn’t buy the X100S expecting an update to make it the camera I want. But it bugs me sometimes. And I’m disappointed that Fuji’s FW update strategy is completely random:
“We’re not updating the X-E2. Oh, many people want an update. Let’s update it. We’re not updating the X100S. Oh, many people want an update. Let’ not update it.”
Please new firmware before July 4th Holiday.
The only thing I would really like for my X-E2 is an electronic shutter, but that said, I purchased my X-E2 knowing the specs, and knowing I would probably use it for 2-3 years before upgrading (I have had it for a year, so the X-T1 was also an option). I see any firmware updates a bonus, not my right as a consumer. The camera works great as it is, that is why I bought it. I am going to just worry about taking pictures and not stress about the firmware.
Good man
Patrick, I just saw on Photorumors that they are claiming the update will come in “the next few weeks”. That would imho fit the description of Fuji France better (“as soon as possible”) than 6 months. Are you sure about the time frame?
I think PR is wrong, but of course my sources could be wrong too (although I trust them). It’s all just rumors 😉
Fuji France said “as soon as possible”. But in the Realpolitik “as soon as possible” means that Fuji first has to sell the X-T10, and then the can update the X-E2 and bring it closer to the X-T10… it’s not possible before, without endangering the X-T10 sales.
When using flash in Auto-ISO mode, the X-T1 stills uses a high ISO value.
It does not behave like my Canon’s/Sony/Oly.
Is there a setting I missed ?
Will the new firmware help fix this ?
This is not bug. Using flash is not equal to using low ISO. Using high ISO and flash in low light leads to more balanced light on photo. I other words such photo usually looks better.
If you don’t like it, you can anytime change ISO out of automatic.
Just wondering out loud. If the X-E2 firmware if coming 6 months out is this a final, end-of-life upgrade for the X-E line or just meant to keep the X-E2 up-to-date for users who might use the body as a backup to the X-Pro2 while development continues on the X-E3?
You can set the EVF/LCD setting to a Customizable button on the XE2.
Oops, missed that one. Have to read the manual and Rico’s book more carefully …. Thanks for the tip!
I usually like to adjust aperture and shutter and let the camera handle ISO. No other camera seems to operate like this, only Fuji. Not Canon, Sony or Olympus.
The pictures when using flash under auto ISO look pretty horrible with a yellowish cast.
The camera doesn’t seem to balance the settings properly.
X-T1 has an ISO dial, but changing settings requires two hands and eye off the subject.
@Patrick
Any chance we will see support for other image aspect ratios? Would still love to see a equivalent for 6X7 an 4X5 format.
This must be so easy to implement software wise that I still don’t get why it isn’t there yet.
Thanks
