ISO unlocker for the X-T1 for $20!

 photo iso_zps4d20c5f5.png

Some like it, others don’t: the ISO dial locking mechanism. If are one of those who don’t like it, then you can pre-order the “ISO-UNLOCKER” at isounlocker.com. But a minimum first production run of 250 orders is required “in order to keep costs like tooling, metallic stock, setup, machining and processing reasonable.” Once the 250 pre-orders are in, they will start to produce it, and they could be ready to ship it in May 2014.

“ISO Unlocker for the Fujifilm X-T1 is an accessory that improves the ergonomics of your camera. It’s a fully machined aircraft grade aluminum cover for your X-T1’s ISO dial. It keeps the dial lock button held down so that you can more quickly change your ISO setting on the fly. […] Designs for the ISO Unlocker are finished and prototypes are on the way but we need your help to make ISO Unlocker a reality.”

  1. Being a X-Pro1 user, I really can’t get used to the small cursor buttons on X-T1. Those buttons are way too small and hard to be activated. If someone can come out with a hack that make the pressing easier i.e. more X-Pro1-feel-liked, I will for sure buy it!

    1. It’s quite easy to make a fix yourself. 5 layers of a strong electrical tape, use a coin as a template (curved shape) and craft knife. Use something metal to keep the coin in place while cutting (don’t use your fingers, unless you want to cut them off).

I done this a few days ago and it makes it nice and easy to use. It will more than do until an official product is released.

    2. True, that dial is a step down from X-Pro1, it is so difficult to operate it, I really hope they will do something about it, and also please add an option to have the focus points always on, these two slows down the operation speed big time.

      1. An option for selecting focus point directly with the four way pad would be excellent. While we are waiting for that FW update, if you want to speed up the four way selection pad for selecting focus point, you can assign all four function buttons (Fn3-Fn6) to focus point selection. That leaves you with only Fn1 and Fn2 for other functions, but you still have the Q menu. Sure it still takes one extra button press, but it is the fastest way available for now.

The way Fuji could easily implement direct focus selection would actually be much the same as I described above, but adding to the activation of the focus point selection that the cursor takes a step in the direction you choose on the four way pad. This can either be a setting or occur automatically when Fn3-Fn6 are all set to focus point selection.

For those who have not already found out: After you have selected focus point there is no need to press OK. Just halfpress the trigger and the focus point is confirmed. That you can skip the OK button and halfpress the trigger actually seems to be a strategy that Fuji applies consistently to selections. I have seen it in several other places in the menu system for the X-E1, X100S and X-T1.

        1. @Soli +1
@Robert: X hope also they fix it on the next firmware. Selecting focus point should be a breeze don’t know what where they thinking having to press a button before and after ok or confirm (even if it is with the shutter button… although it’s faster that way)
On the next firmware they should have the option for direct select focus point. Add the ae-l af-l to Fn buttons, and make Fn buttons of option that only have 2 optins (ie face detection) make them a direct toggle).
Also if they don’t modify having to press a button for selecting focus and as the pad is so bad and can’t be fixed at least on focus select mode make it possible to select it with the wheels :back to mov horizontal, front to move vertical, and I think it make it faster and it would have a little more sense having a select focus button/Fn.

Also what I really would love also would be the ability to customize the wheel behavior and the ability to override the top dials (ie like shutter but not only between two stops but all the way, also ISO) so you could change them on the fly without having to take your eye from the viewfinder to adjust exposure and settings. The hability is there, because with the remote app you can do that. And for the ones that don’t like this they simply set it for the “usual/default/current” behaviour.

Not sure how flexible they would be with this kind of stuff… maybe they could release the api so people can come with some “non official” costumization, but I hope Kaisen is big enough for them to be really flexible (OT years ago I had an mp3 player, the RioVolt, and the company did released all the features users requested even though having some buttons labeled for X to do the completely opposite thing… and user that didn’t want that feature simply omitted that update/costumization)

          1. Didn’t realize that on the grip the AF-L is the lowest button!:(, here the customization of that buttons would be a must for even thinking of buying the grip in the first place for me (and all back button focus photographers). Being so low would make it a horrid experience using the grip.

      2. I wonder why those pre-production testers did not pick this insensitive button issues. These buttons are worse one I ever used.

    3. It is definitely not ideal. I’ve been retraining myself to just push with my whole finger rather than focusing on my finger tip trying to find the individual button. Not sure how much sense that makes.
Using the center button as a guide I just press broadly in the direction I am trying to press.

  2. If there is a locker, maybe is because if it wasn’t, you’d miss it. And
I’m not so confident that pressing the locker spring all the time would
    be good for its performance…

  3. Very nice solution, even if I do not see the problem. The Iso-dial is fine, for me, but for others its a great idea.

The problem with the four-way button is, that there is no click sound, what makes it wired to use. In fact the buttons are working very good, but as said, hard to find and no clicking sound. After one week I got used to it.

  4. Hop, for Fuji we’re going the same way as the zillion far too expensive ans useless accessories in the Leica-world. From aircraft-aluminium unlockers to titanium shutter buttons, till gold-plated half cases. What.s next? Special tripod heads with complicated dials on it, tripods in special rare metals? Boy I hate this rich amateur non-sense.

    1. BOOM! theres the truth.
its a good idea but done a pointless way, wait for hong kong makers to clone it for $2

      1. True 20$ is 5x to expensive ,
before they reach 250pcs paid china relase cheaper one same quality 😉 …. let post idea to some shenzhen forum;)

    2. It’s a good idea and it is useful for a lot of shooters. I would guess the cost is high because of their expected volumes. Fuji X-T1 owners who want an unlocked ISO dial are a pretty limited market. They do have to recuperate up-front design and tooling costs after all.
I don’t think this item belongs in the same category as your other examples. It serves a clear function.

      1. I think it will be in the 70-80% range of people, will want this. Shooting at home you dont notice it but do something serious and it will piss you off and you will want to change it. Just another design element that is slowing you down for no point.

  5. Come on people…spell check at a minimum. 75% of the posts here look and sound as though written by cavemen (no offense to cavemen).

    1. No! It can still be bettered….
They should make one with an optional hole in the centre, so we could still use the lock!

  6. Hey guys,

Just bought the X-T1 in a local store saturday.

Have to say i’m completely in love with everything in it except that 4way controler.

The camera feels great in hand, the viewfinder is a beast. Just love it.

  7. I think it’s genius !! I’m not in the market for a T1 (Sony user) but if I bought one, I’d definitely want the ISO dial unlocked at all times.

    1. Awesome! My X-T1 is on the way (sold on eBay at USD 861!). Could you kindly let me / us know what size or rubber (or what diameter is the ISO dial) did you order? Thanks!
