HOT DEAL: X-M1 with kit lens for $399! (limited quantity available)

 photo X-M1_zps7999a372.jpg

The price is almost ridiculous: Top rated Plus seller Newegg is selling the X-M1 with 16-50 for just $399! Check it out here.

This offer makes the APS-C X-M1 camera with kit lens $100 cheaper than the X20 with 2/3 sensor.

  1. Wow!

    That’s an incredible price and very tempting.

    But as enticing as the price is, I’ve always been leery of this model because while it no doubt delivers that great Fuji IQ, it lacks half of the things that excite me most about the Fuji user experience:

    * rangefinder style left side VF
    * lots of analog style controls

    It delivers:

    * beautiful design
    * great IQ.

    If there were a reasonably priced EVF, I’d jump on this. Or if it came with the pancake lens.

    Any XM owners here? How does it handle for you? How are you using it? Backup camera or primary?

    Thanks!

    1. X-M1 is heavily neglected by Fuji. Firmware updates are mostly limited to lens support, bugs are left intact (e.g. erratic vertical focus frame movement). Many easy improvements already made for similar models are simply not made here. There’s only one configurable button and dial position, wifi is useless, many film simulations modes are deliberately missing, AF-C and tracking AF is broken by design (refocus on half press), AF-C crosshair is fixed on center… it’s a lot of wasted potential of otherwise good SMALL interchangeable lens camera.

      1. Thanks for that insight. It seems unlike them to not address these issues with firmware. That neglect and the deep discounts are likely indicators of sales. This is a more conventional style camera and its failure should be instructive to Fuji about continuing to serve an audience that likes the analog controls and viewfinders of other models. This model was clearly aimed at the perceived “mainstream” user who likes shooting from the screen. This camera and the sadly traditional XQ1 are indicators that Fuji is testing the waters. I hope these failures refocus them on XPro and loftier goals! 🙂

        Price could have made this the “gateway drug” into the Fuji ecosystem but it sounds like this user experience would do little to encourage deeper exploration.

        The idea of a relatively inexpensive, plastic camera is still a good one, I think. But they shouldn’t aim it at point and shoot and cell phone upgraders. Instead, they should use it to woo M43 owners and the X curious. 🙂 Cut corners on build quality, buffer and burst, but maintain the Fuji gestalt, and they’d have a winner.

        1. And the amount of commenting in this thread would also seem to indicate some serious apathy towards this product — the other threads are generally pretty lively! 🙂

          1. They took a great platform from the X-Pro1/E1 and make it stupid, plastic and at the time relativly expensive. And then because that was not enough … they released the A1 which adds confusing to the above mentioned list.

            But for 400USD, could be interesting – if you only need RAW.

      2. That price is great and the X-M1 is probably a decent camera, but without the discount, I never understood it. Of the A, M and E bodies it made the least sense of the 3.

        1. Interesting. How so? For me, the A was the oddity. Fuji has been unwavering in its commitment to XTrans, so to release a new camera with a Bayer array so far along seemed an odd tangent. They were forced to price it below the exact same body to illustrate XTrans value, but that seemed a little forced.

  2. I just bought the X-M1 as a lens holder for my X-E1 basically. And got the 16-50 to boot. Win win for me. i have the 18, 27, 35 fujis and the zeiss 12 and 35. So I can actually carry a nice range of lenses without a bag at all.
