THE RUMOR
An anonymous source told us that:
“Fuji should present a flash system for X series at the CES.”
The flash has long been rumored. A guide number of 50 or 52, HSS capability, wireless control ability… previous rumors said it will be available in spring. So, if this anonymous source is right, the flash will be announced at CES (6th to 9th of January) and available a couple of months later.
It’s an anonymous source, so, for now, take it with a grain of salt… but at least we will soon see if it’s correct.
That said, I’ll do the best I can also in 2015 to match (or exceed) the 83% correct rumor hit rate of 2014. It will be hard, but I can reach this goal with your support… so, if there is anybody out there, who has some insights to share with Fujirumors, feel free to can contact me 100% anonymously via rumor box (maybe using a nick name so that I can eventually recognize you in future) or via email at fujirumor [at] gmail.com.

Would be nice if I can combine this with my Nissin i40
+lI just bought a Nissin i40. So yeah, it would be nice if you can somehow do multiple TTL flash combos with the new Fuji and the i40.
Otherwise, I’ll probably stick with the i40 unless the new Fuji has a good HSS capability. Oh, here’s hoping the new Fuji flash is built better than that crappy 42.
Hopefully it will be a RT Flash like canons ex-rt 600 speedlite not old school like nikons sb 910 infrared…..so outdated, range limitations….
It seems that some high ranking jerk at Fuji hates flash and/or doesn’t know how to cook it. I have no other possible explanation.
It’s probably the same guy that does not like HDR: Exposure Bracketing limited to 3 shots AND a maximum of 1 stop apart? Anyway… this is good news because right now I use ND filters when using flash and shallow DOF outside but that does not help me if my subject is moving fast…
My first gripe of the year: electronic shutter. Or MS+ES mode to be exact. According to Fuji’s description, MS+ES means your shutter stays mechanical all the way up to 1/4000, then electronic shutter automagically kicks in to save the day. Sounds like the mode to use all the time, eh?
…But for some reason that only programmers with thick accents know, MS+ES completely disables flash. Even in mechanical range. Even in all manual mode.
I know, I had to find that out too in the middle of a shoot… I already signalled it to them.
I had to find that out on location, at -15 with 20 m/s wind. It’s been also raining, not snowing. Hopefully there’s still some magic left in cursing.
Never been much of a flash guy, Still find all manual can work best. I be watching to see if its great or not.
One of many reasons the Fuji X is still not quite ready for prime-time, but at least they seem to be working on it.
Yeh, crazy, spent ages checking sync cord, fuses, bulb, blah blah, they will release a flash but it will have half the wanted functions missing, or using it will turn off some other feature of the camera.
And that “turn off some other feature” part gonna be as illogical as it gets.
Like “Using HSS disables Classic Chrome”, or “Using remote flash will limit you to ISO 400”, or “Remote flash disabled when tilted”. Always fun!

My X-T1 is set to MS+ES and flash works just fine.
Are you sure there is no other settings disabling the flash?
I haven’t tried it yet with any native TTL flashes, so probably in your case (and in Fuji’s internal review obviously) the flash was able to “tell” the camera to fire that sync signal after all?…
It seems to me that the default mode should really be mechanical shutter, and only use the electronic shutter when required. ES has a number of side effects, I can see why they coded it that way instead of the more complicated way you suggest.
It seems that this particular thread attracts people who can read my agenda better than my wife does. So before we make a sudden jump into the wonderful world of anal lube (as some critter below did), let me ask you: what is that “complicated way” I was suggesting, exactly?

To be fair, we have now used flash systems for decades. They are absolutely necessary. Releasing a new system without a reliable flash system is problematic.
oh on that I agree; But considering the time it took the other big players to come up with a credible and easy to use system, it must be far from trivial.
That said constructive criticism is fair and good, what gets me is the systematic nay sayers, no one forces them to use let alone buy a system they judge inferior. If you buy this or that brand in 2015 and you are unhappy with your findings, it is just because you have not done your homework beforehand.
Fujifilm have a lot to answer for. Every manufacturer does. But Fujifilm have marketed and advanced their cameras as better, as faster, as smaller, lighter, and more advanced, than dSLRs. And most reviews take very little account of the negatives, or incongruences in design/utility/form. I love the X, but I hate the system of shallow reviews and marketing upon which it is founded.

That’s true for any area of information, Politics, Religion, International matters, Fuji X/Nikon/Canon reviews…. ;).
Fuji has benefited IMHO from it’s most potent advantage mentioned countless times: to give back to professionals and amateurs alike the sheer pleasure of photographing people/things/lights … and for this I feel “grateful” to Fuji after having “suffered” for many years at the hands of Nikon with their digital line.
This has probably clouded the judgement of many reviewers. For me, today, for all it’s quirks the Fuji X systems is one of the best: ie one of the ones I most enjoy using and I’ve tried a few, desperatly trying (for financial reasons, not fanboyism) to stay with Nikon for years. And their glass are of good to very good quality. Easily on par and often better than their competition counterparts.
That said, in certain areas it represents a step back – in time – : the AF needs some more love – although it is getting much better (see x-e1 vs x-T1) – But at least they’ve recognised that fact and gave MF a very good polish – much more than Nikon ever did in the digital era. Flash system also needs a high level of attention; That said you can still use manual – No it is not as convenient, yes it may slow you down in your work – possibly an issue if you are a pro. And finally there are a few quirks and limitations which sometimes seem odd to say the least. But all in all I am happy to see Fuji is moving in the right direction and in fairness overall fairly rapidly. Instead of always producing the same old kind of stuff, in 4 years they went through 4 different lines of bodies (not counting the pure entry level ones) X100, XPRO, XE and XT and then several iterations in 2 of these lines, each different in form and purpose, plus a nearly full complement of lenses they seem fairly serious and committed. I am fairy confident that the remaining issues will be ironed out
