Back in February, dslrmagazine published an interesting interview with Fuji Managers.
In this interview the manager didn’t say it expressidly, but DSLRmagazine tired to read ““between the lines” of his statements,” and made his guess: the X-PRO2 will have the elegance and great operability of the Leica CL and it will be smaller than the actual X-PRO1.
I’ve launched a Poll, asking if you would like the X-PRO2 to keep the same size of the X-PRO1, or if it should be smaller.
[poll id=”74″]
And now the rumor: a new source told me, that the X-PRO2 will not really be smaller than the X-PRO1. Maybe just slightly smaller, but in fact the size will remain pretty much the same. So, no real downsizing for the X-PRO2 compared to the X-PRO1.
Would this be a good news for you? Tell us in the comments what you think about it.
have a GREAT day,

Hi everybody,
the size is perfect for me, actually X-T1 looks like a toy when you attach all those new lenses. Who had a chance to shoot with cameras on film will find it “right size”. No need for another smaller camera, with this size it is perfectly balanced for me.
I agree with you Sebastian and Marc.
Indeed
The X-Pro1 has a certain heft to it. It feels like a well made camera. Making it smaller would certainly be disadvantageous for the usability.
I agree!
TRUE.
Absolutely
Sounds great. Can’t wait.
Things i hope: 8000 shutter, Tilt screen, Dual slot, Sealed, Wifi and fingers crossed 29 stops organic sensor. 4k video is less important to me.
60% said smaller. What’s the matter with you, guys? Got some feminine hands? You think X-Pro1 is bulky, large and heavy? I really hope the large part of that 60% who voted smaller (I recommend to you the amazing X-M1 or X-A2, knowing that X-E2 and X100 series are already huge cameras) is made of guests to this website, cause it’s really hard for me to believe that a true Fuji lover, enthusiast, professional photographer, would like to change the perfect shape, size, weight of an amazing retro-type rangefinder-style camera into something smaller.
I use the X-T1, now – had to sell my X-Pro1 (no other choice), but I wished the X-T1 had the size of X-Pro1.
I bet many of that 59% (now) were not Fuji X-Pro1 owners. I’ve heard complaints about its performance, but almost never about size, shape, design, color.
I do own an X-Pro 1 and I have regular guy-sized hands, but I think the X-Pro 1 is ridiculously large for a mirrorless APS-C-size camera. It’s not so much a matter of handling as of pack size — it takes up so much space that I need to carry a bigger gear bag than when I use my X-T 10.
However, the rumors I’ve personally collected — this includes from dealers and reps — say that while Fuji wanted to make the X-Pro 2 significantly smaller, the OVF system proved to be an impassable obstacle. There was just no way to shrink its components without reducing magnification, which already is too dinky on the X-Pro 1 compared to other OVF cameras such as Leicas and Voigtlanders.
So, what we’ll get will be basically the same size and design as the old one, but with the X-T 1 architecture and feature set — maybe with a slight bump in pixel count to keep the Grumpy Uncles happy. Still, no bad thing!
“So, what we’ll get will be basically the same size and design as the old one, but with the X-T 1 architecture and feature set — maybe with a slight bump in pixel count to keep the Grumpy Uncles happy. Still, no bad thing!”
I’d say you’re pretty close here, though I imagine that the feature set will surpass the X-T1.
I would anticipate a minimum of 24mp (quite possibly 28), with some new sensor architecture for X-Trans III (whether it’s BSI, or RGBW, or organic, or whatever), with the following features:
– one more stop of useable high ISO;
– improved DR
– dual card slots;
– a tilt screen
– improved weather sealing (think of the newer more robust pebbled surface texture we now see on the X100T that the original X100 lacked)
– an improved-implementation of the OVF
– a new EVF that steps beyond the X-T1 (think the new Leica Q EVF which is 3.0+ million dots)
– all the latest connectivity (wi-fi at least, and possibly NFC)
Beyond this I’m sure there will be a couple of unique surprises amongst the new feature set as well … which has been Fuji’s hallmark when announcing new flagship X-Series cameras.
XPro1 was the perfect size for a ‘pro’ RF style camera. I even thought the XT1 was slightly too small.
Some of us that voted smaller don’t necessarily mean tiny…but maybe 5% …trimmed a little, maybe closer to X100T or Leica Q. And I’d trade the OVF part for a tilt touch screen…
Picture the X100T with the 50-140mm on it.
No thanks. Now we’re emulating the ergonomic disaster that is the Sony A series.
the size of the 50-140 needs an even larger X-Pro2 because it is sort of emulating the Sony ergonomics. Personally I’m more a Leica Q size with 23mm f1.4 type.
^This guy gets it. Hell, I wish my X100T was closer in size to the X-Pro 1.
Agreed. I’d prefer it be a bit closer to Leica M3 size than Canonet or Minolta Hi-Matic size.
Indeed. I have installed a Large Hand Grip (original Fuji) to my X-T1, just to help the size and grip and it is much better now. When I had my X-Pro1, it had a hand grip, too and it was excellent.
Thank you. Very well said.
For those who think the X-Pro 1 is large: Put it beside a Nikon D4s and tell me again that the X-Pro is big and heavy. In fact, it’s dimensions (though not its weight) are very, very close to the M240 … which is exactly where it should be, IMO.
Exactly. Maybe for a woman, X-E2 could be better, but it seems we all forgot quite quickly that almost all of us came from DSLR world. No problems about size, back then we all had DSLR.
Indeed. My wife’s slender hands prefer the smaller X-T1, but mine do not. The X-Pro 1 is about perfect.
I dream of …
– HSS flash
– base ISO at 100 (50 epandable)
– work with Lightroom a lot better
1/8000 manual shutter
Faster flash sync speed
dual card slots
a really great 100-400 zoom
Same size as the X-Pro1 is perfect for a rangefinder style camera. I don’t really care about a tilt screen and will never use video. Organic sensor, upgrade to the processor and 1/8000 shutter speed would perfect. Since the organic sensor probably won’t happen then an upgraded version of the X-Trans sensor would be great.
Sounds realistic.
Those are pretty much my only real wants for it as well. We know that it’s going to basically have ALL of the nice bits from the X100T and XT-1 and then some. I’d love higher flash sync shutter speed as well if they could somehow make it work.
I’d rather trade in the OVF for an EFV and have a tilt screen.
OVF is unusable for most lenses as you always have more ‘lens’ in your sight then you have free view. This is already the case with 16mm, 23mm and 56mm.
I want XPro2 to have:
Better sensor (organic): more DR, more rez
Weather sealed
Better AF
Better burst
Dual cards
Hybrid VF
Lower ISO
Faster mechanical shutter
Bigger battery
Same great style
Competitive pricing with Sony “A7000”
Acceptable video
Leaf shutter primes to go on it
And controversially: a tilting touch screen would be a nice to have if trim and didn’t add too much size
unfortunately it seems to be a tad of an oxymoron.
You get a touch screen on phaseone.
Phase one has them, would be useful for choosing focus.
YES – leaf shutter primes – and 1/1600 flash sync speeds, but please need great video
HSS will go up a lot faster. CS lenses tend to top out at 1/800 to 1/1000. Put on an ND filter to slow the exposure down and you should be able to sync flash at top speed even wide open through typical CS lens-based systems.
Not sure how you’d make leaf shutter primes synchronize with a focal plane shutter, but it’s an interesting idea.
The other option — if it’s high flash sync you’re thinking of — is finding a way to do auto FP high speed sync.
Leica make the focal plane and CS lenses sync. You can choose, one, the other, or both.
Competitive pricing with Sony “A7000” — I like this…
Competitively priced leaf shutter lenses? Hmmm…
Behold the new X-Pro: 3800$.
Don’t worry about tech: it evolves. All that stuff: AF, burst, video, will get better and will come at no cost. Hardware quality? That costs a lot. Remember, even as a light, non-sealed, thinly-clad body, the X-Pro 1 debuted at 1800$.
I use the xt-1 and for me the size and balance is perfect. I changed from Nikon DSLR because of the size. The X-Pro 1 looks a bit like my fisher price camera when i was a child. 😉
So X-Pro 2 please a bit smaller than X-Pro 1!
I would leave the tilt screen for the T series. What we really need is more resolution, better DR, better ISO (including a below 100), weather sealing, ultra fast flash sync. Voila.
All I want for Christmas is a 24mp X-T1(2, 3, 4) Whatever…
good news. XE2 and XT1 are too small, buttons and commands are really too too small for a pro camera
I’d say that PRO approach would be not changing the size at all. Button layout – yes please, make it more ergonomic! But the body… Pro photographers are not rich enough to buy a new set of Luigi cases and L-brackets for every new body!
Agree. Just got the perfect L-bracket solution.
With a couple of niggling exceptions [ AF review], I’m ok with the button layout on the X-Pro 1 (though function assignment could be altered). The X-Pro 1’s D-pad is still far better than the one on the X-T1 (and I don’t know why if wasn’t used on the X-T1). Convex buttons work better than concave ones.
What a disaster, using a 3 year old body. Why does Fuji insist on holding us back?
what´s wrong with the Body? It will still be good in 20 years.
Methinks sarcasm has been lost on the crowd. (Think of complaints of a three year-old sensor.)
No one mentioned the 3 yo dials yet?
Please do not make it smaller, that would be unbearable fir me, I love fuji but the Xpro1 is already the only camera that is comfortable in my hands
The same size as to X-Pro1 should allow larger batteries then and longer shooting – please! The size of the X-Pro 1 ist just perfect, or they want to produce cameras for handbags?
For me the size of the X-E2 is just about the perfect balance for my hands and more importantly my jacket pocket when it starts raining. As it appears there will be no X-E3, the X-PRO2 at 5-10% smaller and for me a X-T1 grip would be a nice some time down the line.
Just being picky but Fuji X-PRO2 “will be pretty much the same size as”, not “will have pretty much the same size of”. Lost in translation no doubt! My old English teacher would have rapped my knuckles that one may he rest in peace.
thanks, corrected
Not if her student didn’t live in an English-speaking country. 😉
Would make sense. The big X-T1 EVF in a smaller rangefinder style body, like the one of the X-E2, doesn’t seems to be possible.
agreed
Let’s look as how it compares to Leica
Leica M9 — 139 x 80 x 42 mm
Fujifilm X-PRO1 — 140 x 82 x 43 mm
Leica is a little smaller. Just slightly. I think that’s a better size. I prefer the Pro1 to get (just) slightly smaller. Weight, same – slightly lighter as well.
I do like the heft and feel of it, but a slight drop of 5% should not affect the feel. I’d put a little more emphasis on the way it feel to the touch. ZERO plastic at touch. Metal alloys throughout. Even the battery and USB cover should be solid and hefty. I do realize this would add a little weight, but I’d compromise for the right reason. Optical viewfinder should be all glass.
X-Pro1 is big for aps-c cam, almost same as FF body, look on FF Sony A7rII size: 127 x 95 x 60mm, or A7r: 127 x 85 x 48mm. I would like X-Pro2 in smaller body.
“X-Pro1 is big for aps-c cam…”
It’s about ergonomics — especially when using larger lenses — not sensor size. Look at the myriad folks in Nikon-world who have been pining away for years for a proper D300 replacement. Why do you think that is?
Same thing here.
And frankly, compared to a full-frame DSLR, the X-Pro 1 is already small and light.
We should not compare the Pro1 to a DSLR. We should compare it to a Leica. And Leicas are the same, or smaller…
I don’t think the sensor itself dictates that much the exterior dimensions of the camera.
The X-Pro 1 is actually almost identical to the dimensions of the Leica M9 (though considerably lighter).
I believe it should stay that size. Going much smaller would be a huge design mistake.
I agree, much smaller is a huge mistake.
What about “slighly” smaller?
I don’t mind like X-Pro1, slightly smaller or not. I do mind the sensor and AF a lot however. Seems like an eternity since they have been using the same bloody sensor now.
I’d love to see: X-Pro2 with AF like a6000 or the forthcoming a7000, 24MP or more (with organic sensor), true ISO100, 1/8000s for that fat 33mm f1,0 lens (rumoured so far only), that would make the system close to fu*king perfect!!! Well, 35/1,0 would be even better..
I wouldn’t mind it a tiny bit smaller, but what I would love for them to do is move the mount up vertically just a bit more so the bigger lenses aren’t sticking out so much on the bottom. It looks kind of funky. Eh, whatever, I still love the hell outta my X-Pro 1.
Since this is supposed to allegedly be a Pro spec’d camera I don’t know why so many people want a smaller body. If the X-Pro2 with be weather sealed then I want a robust body with large, distinguishable buttons that I can operate with gloves on in inclimate weather. The X-Pro1 with the HG-1 hand grip, thumb rest and soft release has been ideal for me whereas I found the XT-1’s buttons to be too small to use. If it’s slightly smaller it shouldn’t be an issue but Fuji has plenty of other smaller bodies already in it’s lineup.
I chose an X-Pro1 both for it’s viewfinder and it’s size. It’s compact enough to be discreet and big enough to be manageable.
I was just wondering about the viewfinder. Will that be optical, electronic or both?
From what I understand it is both.
Electronic like in the XT-1? I have that camera, but I’m thinking of buying a second body. Anyway, we’ll see what it will be.
Both would mean hybrid optical/electronic like the X-Pro1 and X100 series. X-T1 is electronic only.
The X-T1’s electronic viewfinder is plenty good, and if it were an either/or proposition, I’d probably go with electronic. But it’s really nice to be able to switch to optical so I’m looking forward to the X-Pro2, which would make my X-T1 the secondary body.
Yes, electronic like in the X-T1, though expect it to be better. I anticipate it will likely surpass 3.0 million dots (like the Leica Q).
I assume it will be both. The rangefinder style and the hybrid viewfinder is what the PRO is all about! I’m really curious though how they are going to develop the optical viewfinder further. Slightly smaller body is fine with me.
(And Fuji, if you are reading this, please skip the swivel screen, leave out video altogether and put in one of those magic Sony Bayer sensors @24 MP!)
Absolutely NO reason to omit video. Daft comment.
I truly hope it is not smaller. At present I have my XP1 equipped with a Luigi half case and thumbs-up grip, which I find almost perfect. Without the forementioned accessories I find the XP1 too small. The XT1 is really only just manageable with extra Fuji grip.
Making it smaller than the X-Pro 1 would be a major design faux pas. This is the flagship camera, rangefinder-inspired, yet has to work with bigger lenses like the f/2.8 zooms.
Presumably it won’t have a battery pack like the one for the X-T1, so smaller than the X-Pro 1 and it would be an ergonomic nightmare to work with. Imagine, for example, trying to use the 50-140 on a body the size of the X100 series.
Pretty much guarantee that the X-Pro 2 will be approximately the same size as the X-Pro 1 … though obviously far more advanced.
May Gods hear you!
“This is the flagship camera”
Current X-Pro can’t be called ‘Flagship’ compared to the X-T1.
Let’s see how Fuji thinks about ‘Pro’ with the next itteration of the ‘X-Pro’.
Just because its been technologically superseded in the past three years, the X-Pro series are still considered the flagship of the X-Series line-up. The X-Pro 2 will make that clear.
It’s critical that, if it actually exists, is roughly the same size so everyone doesn’t have to race out and replace all the accessories and carrying cases… No Apple cable philosophy please. I’d like to simply toss out the old and pop in the new and get whatever improvements we get with as little friction as possible.
Darn. Posting before reading, I see everyone else said the same thing. Good. Smart crowd. Hallucinogenic about the mystical organic sensor, but smart crowd.
Not really. Fuji video is an afterthought, and going to 4K could create heating issues (see A7rII).
I’d prefer they left it off, too, and concentrated on making the best stills camera possible. People looking for video don’t think “Fuji”.
Video will not effect stills. Video is the one thing fuji admit is most often requested so it’s important to them in attracting more customers.
If you don’t want a camera that shoots video go get a film camera, plenty available and you still get analogue controls.
YES!!
With the X Pro 2 taking a bit too long to hit the market, and the itch to return to rangefinder shooting not going away, I did the only sensible thing; splurge on a film Leica, (which I practically stole from some poor soul who concluded their auction listing at 3 a.m. )
The .85X viewfinder on that Leica is fantastic, and reminded me of why we all love good cameras in the first place; they provide a heightened, unique interface through which we can view the world.
I’d wager that’s half the reason the XT1 was so wildly successful when compared to XPro1 sales. Higher magnification viewfinder, right? In the end, just more exciting to hold up to your eye.
Anyone else want to encourage Fuji to give us a .95 OVF magnification option, so we can shoot a 50mm (equivalent) all day long, like a responsible rangefinder shooter, and maybe embrace and enjoy a bit of serendiptious inconsistency with those big telephoto lenses? I’d pay for it. Hell, I just paid out the nose for a camera with a 30 year old viewfinder, and dials which can make or break an exposure, and I’m part of the lowly working class. I care that much about the experience of shooting. All i want is a small, transcendent window that abstracts reality, and a sensor with a superb lens in its way.
Size, schmize. Just make it magic.
Anyone with me?
I don’t care.
Just hurry up!!!
I want ibis though, evf and ovf and free tether.
Now start a poll for a Monochrome only Fuji
http://www.fujirumors.com/vote-the-poll-do-you-want-a-monochrome-x-series-camera/
IF X-PRO2 is weather or /dust/splashproof and have tilting screen, I think its ok it is about the same size as current XPRO. With hetfy pro lenses like 90mm and 50-150mm you need proper size camera, imagine those lenses with X-M1 size camera 🙂
In my opinion form factor should just stay the same so no accessories need replacing and because many people like a slightly larger body and Fuji should offer one. But to justify that size for an APS-C camera there should be a bonus imho: the ability to insert two batteries into the camera. That would please many pros as they would need less battery switching but would keep cross-compatibility with the other Fuji ILC models by not introducing another battery model. Having a differnt one in the X100 series is bad enough. And when you don’t need the extra juice, just pop in one battery and save weight.
Fuji battery indicator is already inaccurate, I wonder if they are able to implement two batteries / indicators…
Personally I prefer the size and feel of the
X-PRO1 over my XT1. My Canon Dslr gear was huge in comparison till I sold it all.
The X-PRO1 is not a large camera, Fuji if you’re reading this not all of us have tiny hands!
Bingo. X-Pro 1 is a great size.
True. I had the X-Pro1. Gorgeous. I guess some of us arrived in Fuji X family starting from smartphone or tiny soapbox compact cameras – for them, X-Pro1 could be big. But for most serious photographers (and most of Fuji X users are – I like to believe), who come from DSLR world, X-Pro1 was/is an amazing designed camera.
Yup, similar to what I’ve heard. Fuij first were going to make it a little smaller, between the X-E cameras and X-Pro1, then a change in spec direction made them bring it back closer to the X-Pro1.
Personally, I would have liked it to go a little smaller just because I like my SLRs huge and my rangefinders tiny, but eh. It’ll be fine, whichever way it ends up being. If a larger body means they can put in the better features we’ve been hearing about, sure, go for it.
Most rangefinder cameras with integrated viewfinders measured pretty much the size of the X-Pro 1. Smaller ones with fixed lenses, or tiny baselines such as the CL existed, but were not the norm.
I have not, nor will ever, care about “the norm”. If I wanted my gear to adhere to whatever the most common form is, I’d be using a 5D mark II and a 24-70 2.8 zoom lens.
I like my rangefinders to be tiny.
That’s fair enough. I guess you used only Canonetes, CLs, and Olympus Trips, which were ultra-small rangefinders.
Have you heard anything else about the xpro2/xt2?
I can say that I have but I can’t publicly say what.
Cool – can you comment if the future is looking exciting?
Up until last night, I would have said the things I’ve been hearing are interesting but not exciting. Something dropped yesterday, though. I don’t know if it’s going to relate to the Pro2/T2 or if it’ll be its own thing, but something big has come up. Good time to ask. I’ve passed on the relevant details.
Keeping the same size for the X-Pro2 would be my preference. It’s the perfect size for me now. The X-T1 and especially the X-T10 are too small.
Most important, if I may repeat myself — ZERO plastic to the touch.
All metal. Leica style.
Add 2000$ and you’ve got it. X-Pro 2: 3800$.
If you want a camera that shoots video, go get yourself a camcorder. Leave the stills to photographers.
Look Pal, modern cameras all come with video, Fuji is no exception. So if you want stills only there is just one option.
Fuji is not for you, but there are other options like film and Fisher price.
Bye
when I originally went to get an X-Pro1 to ease into the Fuji line, I didn’t like the size of it at all and left the store with an X-E1. for a rangefinder body, I prefer smaller especially considering the size of Fuji’s current lens lineup. if their lenses were smaller, that would be a different story. i’ll always prefer add-on grips. put on one of their nice, fast primes and a grip, and you’ve got your self a beast of a mirrorless rangefinder camera. js
Well we already know the sensor size…too small…
The X-pro1 is small enough for portability and remaining covert, yet large enough to feel good in the hands and still appear professional (which is good, not for boosting ego, but appearing like you know what you’re doing in front of clients). Same size please! If anything, refine the edges, maybe level out the slanted portion.
If Fuji makes X-Pro2 smaller, I would buy X-Pro2 instead of X-E3.
I hope there is an X-E3, then we have a cheaper choice.
Leicas are fantastic, however the film workflow can get tiresome and soon be a thorn in your pocket. As a Mexican, with a 17:1 exchange rate and a 25% devaluation just this year, new cameras are a very capricious expense. I’m glad of having been able to get both an X-E2 and an X-Pro1 (used) at affordable prices. I miss the brightness and reliability of the Leica VF tho; perhaps it was their limited framelines but I constantly find that the X-Pro1 framing at close distances is quite inaccurate (off center) and be forced to use the EVF.
Having shot for ages with just an M body and a Summicron 35 I’m tempted to put them on the block and get an X100T. Sometimes less is more.
