First winner of the Fujifilm Student Awards 2013

Some of you strongly criticized the last winner (see my post here). Now the winner of the first Fujifilm Student Awards 2013 has been announced. “The theme for this year’s Award is ‘The Colour Of….’ with students being briefed to capture an image that illustrates how colour lights up their world.”

The winner is Jade Danielle Smith.

“Jade’s image, a self-portrait laying amongst shadows, impressed judges with its beautiful tone and use of natural light. Together with her entry, Jade provided a commentary that caught the eye of the judges, forcing viewers to question what ‘colour’ ‘means to them… On how she took her image, she said: “Using [shoplink 7829]Fujifilm’s Superia 800[/shoplink] film, I placed my [shoplink 7827 ebay]Canon AE-1[/shoplink] with a 50mm lens and positioned it on a tripod with a ten second timer and naturally placed myself into the direction of where I wanted the light to fall.”

  1. nothing special about this self-portrait photo. hey i can bit that the judges has not chose her because of how is taken. let her try to take the same photo but this time hide your flesh. I promise you will not even at the bottom of the pile.

    pervert judges! lol

she has not showed them her photography, she has showed them her body.

  2. I found this picture very nice and I understand completely it won the “Colour of …” contest. I found the comment above unfair for what is the picture.

Clint Dumm says “sex sells”, I do not know where do you see sex in this picture ? If the body shape of woman is always related to sex for you, I think you have a problem. Maybe it is a cultural difference, the body is so “tabou” in some cultures (like in the US) that it can be interpreted as sexual meaning all the time, a pity in my opinion.

Meeran says ” let her try to take the same photo but this time hide your flesh. I promise you will not even at the bottom of the pile.”
Well one of the gall of taking picture is to show beautiful and or extraordinary things. The body of a woman, for me is beautiful and extraordinary and she presented well with art, talent and respect. Sure with clothes on the picture would have not be the same, probably more ordinary and less beautiful. Again, if being touch by the shapes of a woman is being pervert for you, I think there is a fundamental sociologic problem here.

I like, on top of her artistic/beautiful body shape, the way she played with the natural colour and light and the structure that makes the shadows on her back. I like also how her blond hairs is fading with the light in the room.

  3. Nothing here. Everything (I say everything) is average. The background is hindering her head and everything is… boring…

  4. This is so funny. I missed the post on the winner of last year. And boy I like the shot he did! The colors, the awkward position, the contrast industry/nature, on two banks, plus it’s so spontaneous, he didn’t even “straighten” it!
This year’s winning photo, besides being ok, is so much more cliché, déjà vu.
My comment comes a year too late, but better late than never =)

  5. Hello
I dont mind a bit of criticism but my photo is more about the contemporary thought of the use of light with colour than the nudity, i dont think i won just because i was naked

  6. I love nude photography and natural light photography.
This one has nothing special whatsoever.
Closest analogy would be 70s David Hamilton.
