27mm f2.8 pancake lens announced in June?

Somewhere over the world there was a Fujirumors reader having an informal talk with a Fuji-rep. The Fuji-rep dropped the following information into conversation: the 27mm f2.8 “pancake” lens will be announced (but not yet sold) in June. Then the reader had the good idea to tell it to me… and you know how carefully I keep secrets ;). Of course take this rumor with a grain of salt. I don’t know anything from trusted sources about the 27mm lens.

P.S.: Be sure to be on Fujirumors on Wednesday. Fuji will announce the 55-200mm lens and what’s even more interesting…they will also show an updated lens roadmap!

  1. This lens would be great with a compact X body, no viewfinder, just the sensor a touch screen and a few buttons.

It will also be great on my XP1 🙂

  2. I’m still in the dark as to whether this lens has the aperture ring or not? Didn’t the ‘R’ get dropped from its name?

Don’t know how old that shot above is.

Also can we get some source on the Zeiss lenses?

    Cheers

    1. Because pancakes are dumb. Their only purpose is to put something small on your camera. Useless focal length and slow aperture. That’s the solution.

      1. I completely agree! The outstanding 35mm f1.4 (52mm equivalent) is just a tad too long for indoor. One of my best experiences was shooting with the panny 20 1.7 and i can’t wait to get back to that focal length.

    2. Because a 40-45mm lens (for full frame) is the best compromise for small size and good image quality with a simple optical formula.
Longer lenses, 50mm and above, need a longer optical path and therefore will be longer while wideangle lenses need a more complex optical formula for good image quality, especially in the corners.
It’s hardly a coincidence the central field of view for our eyes roughly correspond to a 43mm lens.

    1. A 40mm equiv for me is the perfect everyday use focal length. DOF equiv is f4 but it is still a 2.8 lens as far a light gathering goes. Having a range of small pancake lenses is a good move of Fuji’s, keep things small and light. Cheers Jon

  3. There is perhaps far more demand for the 23mm, 56mm, and 10-24mm, though some will be happy with the 27mm. A 100mm f/2.8 macro lens with OIS, which is 1:1, would be a fantastic addition sometime next year…

  4. Rangefinder shooting typically involves carrying few lenses. Nevertheless,I will buy more lenses if Fujifilm maintains reasonable pricing, which I expect with the 23mm F2.8. This should be a good lens for walking around and traveling light. The 35mm length is perfect and a most-used rangefinder lens, but 40mm is close enough and very compact. It seems to me that the faster Fuji lenses will be about half again as expensive (like the 14 and zoom), and I will be less likely to buy them. For me this is a hobby and obsession, but I like to keep costs within the justifiable range.

  6. Fuji is expecting to release new firmware in about June to further accelerate focusing. For me, this will improve my XPro-1 and all the lenses I have. Keep it up Fuji !

  7. Where is this lens? I’ve been waiting for it forever now and it’s really the only lens I want.
I have the 35mm which is really nice but it’s too big.
I bought the x pro because this lens was coming out.

    Let’s get with it fuji!

  8. There are now two classes of lenses that fit the xPro-1 and Fuji family. The view 16mm zoom is plastic bodied, if I understand properly. The 27mm is metal and an attractive size and magnification, but I have not heard a (short) lens hood is included, as I hope it is. The sample images appear excellent. There may be bokeh but it is less significant with a 2.8 maximum aperture. In actuality, 40mm is more of a compact 35mm alternative than a 50mm alternative so bokeh is less a requirement. Low light performance of the cameras is very good, so the aperture is not a factor as much for capturing an image as for blur control.
