New Sony NEX-7 videos and first ISO test!!!

There is a new Sony NEX-7 preview at DSLRmagazine (Click here to read the google english translation). You might don’t understand a lot as google doens’t reallya  good job here. But the exciting thing about that preview is that the reviewer (Valentin Sama) was the very first person to post an ISO tets made witht the NEX-7! Check here: NEX-7 ISO test (.jpg). The image quality looks quite good!

Availability: The NEX-7 is still a hotseller (hotpreordered) camera. See Amazon rankings (Click here to see them). One of our readers have been told by Sony Canada that the NEX-7 will be available from November 5. So you will have to wait at least two months before to get your hands on it! Preorders at Amazon, Adorama, Jessops UK and Sonystore.

More NEX-7 news:
Hands-on at DC.watch and Pocket-Lint. A video footage with the NEX-7 has been taken by EosHD at the IFA event in Berlin.

  1. Looks good up to 6400 imo – especially if these are 100% crops from 24mp.. you’re looking at a TINY piece of the whole image. Above 6400 you see the crushing noise reduction kicking in, smoothing over areas. And the colours start to go too – that’s noise reduction as well trying to crush the chroma noise and ends up desaturating the pic.

I know from my a850 what sort of detail and results to expect from 24mp, and these pics look very good. 24mp is absolutely MASSIVE, and we are looking at a tiny little piece. I bet the whole image at 6400 looks pretty damn good!

    1. Same. I’m hoping it stacks up or is better than the 5N. Camera costs twice as much as the 5N so it bloody well better!

      1. Why? everbody was daft enough to expect A77 to beat best FF and Medium Format Cameras costing 2-8x. expectations are a funny thing. and there is more to a camera and photograpgy than pixel peeping. ie the A77 beet most of those cameras on facilitys and I would get twice as many good shots with it. Just that printing at 2′ by 3′ some shots in low light would not be quite as good.

  2. This camera is looking better and better to me. In December the reviews would be the final word about this camera.

    1. Did we just look at the same samples? 3200 is *DEFINITELY* useable even based on these jpeg, unprocessed samples.

Did you see the full size image and the TINY pieces they cropped out? The whole 24mp image is enormous. How big are you viewing/printing when you define “useable”?

    2. When output to the same size, I expect the NEX-7 to perform better than the NEX-5n. Of course if you ignore spatial frequency, then the per-pixel performance of the NEX-5n might be a little better, but it’s the output that counts.

However, we’ll see, but only when properly processed RAWs area available from both cameras under well-controlled conditions.

  3. Remember that this is from a NEX-7 using the new (mirrored) alpha adapter. I’d be curious to see the same test using the new Zeiss or even NEX’s kit lens. This way we could see the actual performance of the sensor, not impaired by the loss caused by the mirror.

  4. Our frothing demand for this camera increases

Starting to leaning back towards the NEX7 again. Love the small form factor of the NEXes, and it turns into a A77 when you use that new adapter.

Looks like I’ll be getting a NEX7 after all.

    1. Except there’s no image stabilisation on the NEX-7/A-Mount adapter option unless you buy one of the few IS lenses in Sigma’s range which are available in A-Mount (and assuming there are not compatibility issues).

        1. It would have to be a very clever adapter if it could stabilise the image. It would have to move the entire lens relative to the body to compensate for movement. Vibrating that much mass around at speed is going to make you fingers tingle more than a little.

      1. Yes that is the biggest negative point. But I have been able to use my A-mount lenses on my NEX5 without much problem. While it is nice I will survive without it. 🙂

E-mount lenses will be fitted 80% of the time and the upcoming ones will have OSS (but not the Zeiss IIRC).

  5. Oh!! This is one sexy piece of kit for hillwalking 🙂 I just cannot wait. And image quality (I know @David, too early to judge 😉 looks really nice! Very very nice up to 1600 and very usable one or two stops more. What wonderful news, really.

    Thanks for the news, SAR.

    1. Indeed, for hillwalking, this machine looks great. Currently thinking of selling all my Nikon lenses and body, and investing in contax G or Zeiss M lenses, as I want/need small, light, and unobtrusive. Current Nikon D200 and nice AiS lenses are too big a combination for serious hillwalking.

And, I should mention that the NEX7 is FAR better till boost ISO levels than my D200 is after 800 ISO; in fact, till about 3200, it is better than my D200 at ISO 400. I’d reckon it is as good or better than a Nikon D5000 from all the samples I’ve seen so far.

      Very impressed.

  6. Whew, good, I still want to see actual photos (I don’t put a lot of stock in image crops like this), but this eases my mind somewhat about the NEX-7. Based on the A-77 images I’ve seen I wasn’t sure if I’d be using it over ISO1600, but this test looks ok up to ISO6400 to me. I’m guessing I’d still rather have the sensor from the 5N because I’d rather have more ISO than more resolution, but I can’t complain with decent ISO6400 in a 24mp camera.

      1. Well, not really for me. I almost always use an EVF, I have to have a hot shoe, and I want the tri-nav UI from the NEX-7. So the NEX5n isn’t really an option for me. However, if they were to offer the NEX-7 body with two difference sensor options I would certainly choose the version with the sensor from the 5N. 24 megapixels is just total overkill for me. I’ve made 16×20″ prints from 10mp cameras that looked fine. I’m just going to be wasting disk space once we go over 20mp.

  7. look fine until 1600… 3200 looks usable but markedly degraded. Anything above I wouldn’t use, granted thats no different than with CaNikon. I’m not thrilled with what I see at ISO 100. Hope that its just a crappy lens…. btw, was this using the older adapter or the newer one that sticks the stupid translucent mirror in the way? Looking forward to good samples with top notch glass and perhaps some RAW files.

  8. Hard to judge from a merged crop, but it looks good, which isn’t very surprising. Pound for pound though, my vote is still for the a77 because of better ergonomics to be expected from a larger body to offset larger lenses. For wider or conpact zoom lenses, I bet the nex-7 will sing as a very portable high quality camera.

  9. never mind… checked the site and it looks like the did use the translucent mirror adapter for the noise test shot… shouldn’t affect noise much but I’m certainly not making any judgements about the ISO 100 image quality from that.

    1. So the test actually represent A77, and NEX-7 maybe slightly better.

When viewed on monitor, at 100% size, usable up to ISO 1600.
With ISO 3200, need to reduce the size a bit (maybe 50%) to reduce the noise.

      Not bad for APS-C!

    1. Focus difference I think. 400 is slightly better focused in that area.

But of course these are tiny crops from a huge image. The focus point is probably somewhere outside the cropped area

  10. Amazing to think what 1600 film grain used to look like compared to those samples. Fine days indeed. I was worried with first reports about high iso as I do a lot of natural light, and living in the UK “natural” isn’t always “bright”. But now I’m off to add my name to the waiting list.

  11. I don’t think that kind of ‘testing’ is worth mentioning, to be honest .

We won’t learn anything about the Nex-7 until it’s in the hands of the usual proper testers .

  12. The NEX-7 performance shouldn’t be much different than the A77. The difference here is the release of photos reflecting performance is more controlled with the NEX-7. So I would think the hysteria surrounding the A77 high ISO performance won’t be duplicated here. Thank goodness for that. I personally have had enough of so-called experts and enthusiasts sharing worthless opinions on pixels from JPEGs pulled from blogs and Google searches.

I would expect the NEX-7 to show well in this regard, hence the final A77 will be just fine.

  13. I like how at 25 seconds into the video the guy is looking through the viewfinder with the wrong eye, with his nose pressed against the LCD. Really establishes credibility =)

      1. Google “left eyed photographer”. There are those that claim viewing with the left eye results in more creative composition. May well be psuedo science nonsense but I can attest, based on observation of my professional photographer friends and colleagues, there is a very high percentage of left eyed pros out there, most of whom are right handed. For me, it was not a conscious decision, I’m simply left eye dominant.

        1. I often shoot with my left eye too now that you mention it. If I have to close 1 eye, it naturally is the right eye for me.

In fact, rather than googling ‘left eyed photographer’, image.google ‘photographer’ The first result uses his right eye. The second, left. Then it varies.

  14. What do you mean – the wrong eye? There’s no such thing:) just like there are right handed and left handed people, there are those using the left eye with VF, I’m one:))

    1. havent yet seen a left handed dslr or mirrorless. also have not seen a left eye version since they are corresponding. of course u can contort to use the left eye, but it was not made for that way becuase it would cram your face and both hands too closely. shouldnt be hard at all to create lefty versions of popular models though.

      1. I shoot a D7000. I’m right handed. I’m left eye dominant. I sometimes shoot with my right eye for whatever reason. It is absolutely no better or worse for ergonomics on a DSLR to shoot with the other eye. Right or Left my face is still pressed up against the back of the camera, or did you forget that on a DSLR the viewfinder’s basically in the middle of the camera?

In fact, shooting with the right eye is a rangefinder originated habit, you are supposed to use the viewfinder, which is classically flush or nearly flush to the rangefinder body on the right eye while you keep your left eye open.

Other camera bodies are not designed with a dominant eye in mind. (Dominant hand is another matter but learning to press a button with your right hand as a lefty shouldn’t be that hard.)

  15. Lots of talk about A77 high iso but very few people seem to mention the dynamic range. The a55 sensor seems to have a better DR than my old A700, the extra room for highlight recovery is great and it retains a wider DR as you move up the ISO. I wonder if the A77 is as good or better than the A55 in this respect.

    Does anyone know?

  16. I was a semi- pro fotographer using a A-900 and also a canon G10. Now i stopt commercial photography , and only do travel, street , landscape photograph.

So tired of the heavy A-900 and lenses, i’m interested in exchanging it for a NEX7.

According to DXO labs te sensor (tested in the A-77) overall only scores 1 point less then th A-900. The plus is in color depth and DR, but the minus is in noise. The nex 7 treshold in on iso 800 while the A-900 treshold in on iso 1450.

Further big minus for the nex 7 vs A-900 are :

    – Contrast AF (slow)
    – limited braketing
    – Limited choise in lense (A mount lenses only with big heavy adapter)
    – Noise
    – EVF missing lot of the A-900 viewfinder funtionality.

    – Slow a AF is a NO-NO for street fotography.
    – Braketing can be overcom by changing settings manualy on a tripod.
    – Limited lenses. On the A-900 i mostly use a 24 1.8,50 1.4 prime and 70-200 2.8.
    so for the NEX i need a 16 1.8, 30 1.4 prime and 50-150 2.8. NOT available.
    – Noise, iso 800 (100% noise free) is sufficient.
    – EVF mayby getting use to.

So for the moment i will wait for usefull lenses to become available for the e-mount and also i want to test the AF speed first.
