First full NEX-C3 review at Amateur Photographer and Focus Numerique!

Amateur Photographer (Click here) posted a full [shoplink 7207]NEX-C3[/shoplink] review. They start the rview with an interesting note: “the new C designation in the NEX-C3’s title stands for compact hints that Sony may plan another line in the NEX range in the future.“. What about the camera itself? AF is good but not as fast as the [shoplink 4718]Panasonic GH2[/shoplink]. What’s really good is the dynamic range: “What is particularly gratifying is that when shooting at ISO 200 and 400 images can be underexposed in camera to preserve highlight details, and then the in-camera dynamic range optimiser set to its highest setting to brighten shadow details, without introducing image noise. When doing this, colours are accurate and an impressive amount of detail can be recovered. ” The conclusion is that “it is quality of the images from this little camera that steals the show.”

UPDATE: There is a very well written first impression report on Luminous Landscape (Click here).

Focus Numerique (Click here to read the google english translation). posted the very first full [shoplink 7207]Sony NEX-C3[/shoplink] review! They tested the shutter noise (Click here) and they were not happy with it. it’s to loud. They tested the camera for a weak and noticed that the anti dust cleaning isn’t as good as the one used by Olympus. And also the OIS system is not as effective as the one used by Olympus. They also measured the LCD screen performance. Average brightness is 554:1 (little weak to see the images in outdoor). The image rendering is cold (12,400 K). Now the good news, AF works fast (0.4 sec) and the images form 200 to 1600 ISO are superb (that’s the word used by Focus Numerique). Rolling shutter on NEX-C3 videos are not really an issue (again a very good news!). Focus Numerique “recommends” the NEX-C3. Here is the screenshot of the Pro and Cons list (google English translation):

  1. I guess if you need a small cute camera that has strong IQ then the NEX might be what you want.

I continue to be underwhelmed, especially with is optics choices but it’s a young platform. Personally, when I’m not carrying my now discontinued A850 or when it’s difficult to get the shot with big iron and Zeiss lenses I’m still going to use my Canon G12 for now, but start looking at other choices outside of Sony.

I’m hoping the next NEX-7 and a new lens choice will change my mind.

But I see camera bodies as platforms to hold lenses and to me and for the type of photography I do, the NEX still fails to deliver.

  2. “to brighten shadow details, without introducing image noise”
I’m glad to hear this attitude. DR is about noise control.
I hope they introduce some lowlight beast together with their new 24mpx A77.
    Cos not everyone needs mpx…

  3. I’ve learned not to trust the battery rating that reviews have. In reviews the NEX 5 is said to only take 300 shots on one battery, but mine must be special because I can get about 1,000 before I run out.

      1. I have two OEM Sony batteries. I am shooting without flash and have auto review turned off. It seems like the NEX uses more battery power when you’re using manual lenses with an adapter, which makes no sense to me!

  4. “They tested the shutter noise (Click here) and they were not happy with it. it’s to loud.”

Man! They should have turned off the “beep” sound at least. Scared the hell out of me when the wav finally loaded.

  5. Give me a lens that’ll rival the size-to-performance ratio of the Panasonic 20/1.7, and then–and only then–will I give the NEX-system a serious glance. They have the sensor and the size, but they desperately need the right lenses to complement it.

  6. Just buy any one of various rangefinder lenses, and you’ll end up with something even superior. Manual focus will be a piece of cake with focus peaking.

      1. Yes, I’m one of those people. Focusing in the right spot with the magnifier, closing it, and then pointing the camera right again, takes a lot of time. It is useful for still objects, but not so much for people, pets and so on.
I’m really hoping that peaking works well. As I said, Manual lens heaven ^^

  7. Any news on the flash.
Still happy with the NEX-5, but would love the bounce flash (like the SB-400 and ex-270).
Having a small and good bounce flash would separate NEX series form the 4/3rds.

I feel this is the most exciting news of them all.

  8. Luminous review is nice, except it is a bit insulting.

NEX users are quite a bunch and some have experience in photography. It was a bit ugly claiming all NEX users are lame
