First image of the new Canon EOS-M3!

This is the very first image of the new Canon EOS-M3 that will be announced on Friday. The specs are yet unclear but it’s certainly not going to be a 50MP camera like the crazy 5Ds 馃檪

  1. Hm, nice grip, more buttons and articulating screen… But I want to see the AF performance and few more lenses.

  2. If they continue like this, Canon will eventually have a really attractive and competitive mirrorless camera in ten years at the latest!

  3. If Canon wants to make a statement, they must release something that is at least as good as Sony’s A6000.
Anything lower will be considered as a futile attempt.

All this picture tells us is that it “looks” more like an A6000. We’ll have to wait and see how it performs in terms of IQ and AF.

    This camera needs:
    -Dual Pixel AF
-Very good EVF (built-in or optional)
    -Improved IQ (better dynamic range/noise)
-Controls (back button af, customizable controls)

    1. And 4K video.

      > -Very good EVF (built-in or optional)

It doesn’t have built-in EVFs, and optional add-on EVF would definitely push the price above the A6000.

      > -Improved IQ (better dynamic range/noise)

If they haven’t managed it in 7D2 and 70D, no chance in hell they did it in EOS M3.

      > Anything lower will be considered as a futile attempt.

I think it is. Depending on the price and the AF system, it might have a chance among the Canon aficionados, though.

If it has the 4K and the functional AF system, it might also have a chance with videographers.

      1. Well, after seeing more pics, there’s definitely no evf so adding an external one is the only answer. Which sucks because the EVF DC1 doesn’t have a top shoe. So no external flash possible with ext. evf on.
It now looks more like the A5100 now than the A6000.
If they aim that low, you can forget about Dual Pixel. And 4k is, i’m sure, completely out of the question.

Heck I don’t even think it’ll be sold in the US. It might be a Japan only release again.
If it’s sold in the US, who’s gonna buy that? Canon DSLR owners that want a smaller camera for when they go on vacation and beginners that have yet no idea what to buy as their first camera and think Canon is the best company in the world.

  4. So a major update 馃檪 Does not seem to have an EVF as it seems to have a pop up flash But seems to have 2 more manual controls 馃檪 To really make a point they are serious about Mirrorless they need to compete with the Sony a6000 as I expect the price to be at least $550 So one thing we know it has Touch LCD wich is nice but it still lacks more manual controls So if seems to be more of a Sony a5100 competitor but that is not making a statement to be leading Mirrorless in few years. It has to be mighty cheap and be much better than the EOS1-2 if they are to expect goog sales and then only buyers will be budget minded beginners and Canon fans

  5. I may be in a small minority, but I like an add on EVF that can be rotated 90掳. It comes in handy when shooting macro with manual lenses.

    1. With the Pana GX7, I got the best of both worlds. 馃槈

My dislike of add-on EVF is based on two things.

First, being add-on, it increases the size, lessens portability and adds hustle of putting it on and off.

Second (which is mostly resolved by now) many (most) add-on EVFs do not have any kind of tightening mechanism (like e.g. flash units) meaning they are held in place solely by the hot shoe brackets. If either the add-on EVF and shot shoe loosen up, the EVF might easily come off at unexpected moment (and damaged or lost).

Otherwise, for macro, to me it is more convenient to use the smartphone with an app for live view and shutter release via wi-fi.

  6. I’m getting so fed up with Canon.. There are numerous forum posts from people like us that express what features we are looking for in a model such as this, and release after release it’s always the same stuff. I WANT A BUILT-IN EVF – not some stupid add-on accessory. For me, this would be a travel camera and in sunny places, an EVF is necessary. Also, as I age, my vision is getting more farsighted and I don’t want to hold the camera 14″ away from my face to see a small screen.

While I’m venting, I agree that some additional lenses would be needed – I would be happy with an equivalent 24-100 f/4 zoom. A smallish lens such as this with the small body would be an ideal portable camera allowing me to leave my 6D at home. But Canon doesn’t care.

  7. I wonder who Canon’s target audience is? Perhaps it’s the Oly/Pana-non-EVF mirrorless buyers (which I see a large number of tourists carrying here in Paris)? If so, maybe something like this will sell. If their target is Sony, well, Canon may find out they’re facing serious competition. It’s hard to imagine a better camera than the A6000.

Now if Canon were about to release a FF 50mpixel mirrorless with the size and EVF layout of the A6000, then they’d have my full and un-divided attention. It’ll likely not happen as long as Canon believes their DSLRs will make the company money in a collapsing market.

    1. it’s not that hard to figure out. A5000/A5100, Pens, X-A1 and XA2 all don’t offer EVF.

canon’s lenses for EF-M are all consumer lenses – but of a high quality optically. it makes sense to hit the consumer market and not the enthusiast / prosumer market. for starters, it’s bigger and less real competition. Fuji isn’t really interested in that market and neither is sony right now.

this is much smaller than the X-E1/A6000, and offers probably a full 3:2 LCD screen.

      1. You say Sony is not competing in the starters market, but they have 4 starters cameras in the E-mount line: The E-3000 (rummored to get a new version) The A5000, The A5100 and the A6000. All cameras in the sub $800 group. All nice starter camera’s, all with a nice set of lenses (a lot more lenses then Canon).
Then there is Panasonic and Olympus, with a lot of (very cheap) cameras in the starters range, and there is Samsung with some nice offers, and even Fuji have some very nice starters cameras. How can you tell that there is no competition?
