Internal battery of the Blackmagic may have caused the camera to explode!

Mirrorless cameras are getting more and more powerful and batteries have to deliver more and more performance. Well, it just happened that the 2.5K Blackmagic Cinema Camera exploded during a shooting! The cause is likely the battery of the camera.

Just watch the video on top if you don’t believe such a thing can happen for real!

And this is the official Blackmagic response on that mater:

“There have been a small number of isolated incidents where it has been reported the battery had exploded. This is not a common occurrence, and we would like to gather as much information about the situation as possible to ensure that it does not become common. We do apologize for the issue you’ve encountered and would like to assist in getting an RMA set up to sort this out. Do let me know if you have any additional questions.”

  1. It seems to me that Blackmagic is openly recognising the problem and want to get it fixed – which I think is a commendable approach. You do not see this type of behaviour all that often (remember exploding/expanding batteries in some Apple products?).

  2. We didn’t have to wait too long for the first anti-Apple comment. These people never sleep. lol

The Apple battery problems have been shown to be the result of tampering with the battery (fakes of Asian origin) or the use of cheap substitute (and often fuse-less) chargers. Apple can only tell people not to do that. After that, it is a battle between common sense and stupidity. The hundreds of millions of genuine products work just fine.

Blackmagic have a serious problem on the hands here if their product is shown to be defective. This is about as serious as a defect with a product can get. They have no option but to deal with it, before someone gets their eyes blown out or some other serious injury. The fact that this is not isolated among such a relatively small number of products shipped is worrying.

If you own one of these cameras, have it checked out by Blackmagic. Stay safe.
