  1. Another ugly mirrorless camera (imo of course). I wonder why they insist on making them to look like cheap dslr, like the mentioned a3000 and the samsung nx (5/10/20/30). Other shapes are much more ‘interesting’ for mirrorless. You want the central evf? Then ok, fuji x-t1 and oly em1/5/10 have it but at least have a nicer look! Otherwise, the lack of mirror allows for the very nice and space saving rangefinder form factor, like a6000 (and former nex) or fuji x-e1/2 and pro1, or pana gx7. Those are nice mirrorless bodies!

      1. Nope. My complain is that many mirrorless cameras do not take advantage from the lack of the mirror to get a nice looking shape. Many are almost as bulky as small dslr ones. So why going mirrorless if you want a dslr like body? Have a look at camerasize. In my mind (and based on many surveys I read this idea is shared by most) mirrorless camera means having the same sensor and iq as big dslr, in a smaller and more stylish body. This camera, and the others I mentioned in my original post, defeat this purpose.

        1. I see where you are coming from but i believe that Higher end CSCs should either be a larger Rangefinder SLR style (XT1) or classic SLR (NX30) styled so you get a nice weight/size/grip balance when using larger lenses.

I like the XE-1/2 and the a6000 but i would never put a tele lens on them they become far too front heavy.

I agree that this camera should NOT look like this, it is such an entry level CSC and its target consumer wont be buy large lenses, i believe SONY are just trying to get people away from their SLRs and onto their mirrorless

          1. I agree here. I think that most ppl still think that only cameras looking like dslr can produce good pictures, so manufacturers are creating mirrorless cams looking like dslr.

        2. exactly what purpose? your initial post clearly states personal superficial look of the camera. pretty much contradicts everything what you are now talking about.

        3. “Nice looking shape” have absolutely no meaning when you start taking pictures. It’s all about ergonomics and while this new Sony doesn’t excite me in any way, I’ll guarantee that it’s more comfurtable to hold when compared to many other mirrorless cameras in this price category.

          1. Ok, I can understand this, but then why going mirrorless when those cameras cost even more than the dslr counterparts? My personal goal (shared by many mirrorless users) is to be able to bring the camera always with me, thus a compact size helps a lot. The Pana gx7,for example, can be kept in a pocket of a jacket, when using a pancake or small lens. This is simply not possible for a camera shaped like this one, even when using the smallest available lens.

        4. I happen to like the dSLR-like shape (such as my Panasonic GH3) when using longer lenses. Not everyone uses compact lenses, so not all camera bodies are going to be well-balanced for such use.

I also like the Panasonic GM1, which is more tiny than most.

Why do they all have to fit the same idealism?

          1. the GH3 does really look great but most importantly the balance with the long lenses are better and not awkward. practicality trumps ill-advised superficiality any day. I’m not sure where the erratic idea of a mirrorless should only be exclusively a rangefinder-like shape and shouldn’t be dlsr-like shape emanated from.

I agree that not everyone uses compact cameras and compact lenses. cameras are tools for taking photos. not fashion accessories to make you look cool. although having a small camera with a long lens attached to it even makes you look a lot stupid than cool.

  2. I wonder whether somebody noticed the lens: it seems Sony considers the 18-55/3,5-5,6 kit lens too fast and decided to make another kit lens, but slower and with shorter tele-end: 18-50/4-5,6. I don´t really get the point of making such a lens; Sony already has two cheap kit lenses: 18-55/3,5-5,6 and 16-50/3,5-5,6, so why making another kit rubbish?
