I’m going to buy two so I don’t have to change out batteries.
I am going to buy 3 so I can combine them and get a 105mm if I need the reach.
DIY lytro. I like.
Duct tape front of lens to another camera’s LCD?
I’m going to buy the 6-pack:
25mm, 35mm, 45mm, 55mm, 85mm, 120mm.
I wish they really did this but i’ll skip 45 and just go 24-35-55-85
add a 400mm 2.0 for sports and wildlife.
I got two of the original ones. I still change batteries…
Such a high price for a gadget where a fixed lens is stuffed on a sensor.
Sony when are you going to make mirrorless cameras and not gadgets?
To get the same performance out of a 35mm lens it would cost twice as much maybe even more so this is far from a gadget and is actually a good price considering how much a separate 35mm would cost if it was as good as the rx1 combo. The only problem I have is when the camera dies so does the lens.
and really, there is no comparable substitution that will get you to the same small form factor. The a7 bodies are close enough for some but there is a real difference in size and volume between those cameras and the RX1. You could stick the FE 35/2.8 on an a7RII but then you are looking at 745g vs 507g, a larger package and you lose a stop.
I just got the 35mm 1.4 fe and I may sell it once I get the rx1 or I may end up keeping both. I can just use my a7 with the 55 and use the rx1 as my 35 for events and maybe keep a 28mm & a 12mm in my bag if I need wider.
Sweet!
the fixed lens is a deal breaker for me. it’s not meant to be a primary camera. a better deal is getting another a7rii and put on a lens you already got.
Not everyone is looking at this purchase from a “better deal” perspective. The original RX1 was never about a better deal, it was about having the power of that wonderful sensor and lens combination in the smallest possible package.
Everyone has their specific needs and budget but if you can afford a camera like this and are comfortable with shooting 35 to 50mm (you can easily crop to 50 with acceptable pixel loss – even go up to 75mm) this is THE camera. The weight and size difference between the RX1 and the a7 bodies is more significant than many understand it to be, so when I want to travel light, this is the goto camera for everyday and travel. Far from a gadget, the original RX1 and this new model are powerful photographic tools.
definitely works for a small subset of people. fixed lens just too limiting for many. was looking at it as a back up camera, but now considering another a7rii as a back up. problem solved if a9/99ii comes out within a year, in that case my current a7rii becomes the back up.
Absolutely. That’s the best solution for everyone.
As a matter of fact, this is a mirrorless camera. This is basically an A7RII perfectly combined with a very good 35mm f2 lens, at a A7RII body only price, but with a silent leaf shutter, aperture ring and macro mode. I think that is fair. In addition, this camera has a dedicated AF mode dial.
People owning or having used a RX1/r know what they have got, and what they will get with this camera. Excellent optics, world class sensor, in the smallest, most unobtrusive package available.
It has a leaf shutter? Very interesting, I totally missed that!
I wish Sony would release some FE lenses with leaf shutter to surpass that slow flash sync in their A7 cameras. The flash sync on the A7R II is still 1/160 s for external flashes.
Yes, the RX1 cameras can sync at 1/2000th.
$2000 to much, but I am sure Sony will sell 10’s of these, maybe a dozen.
That’s what idiots said about the original RX1 and it was a great success. How? They made another version and made this now. The original one even sold with the optional EVF or OVF with which the value of the original RX1 was only $49 less, at launch, than this.
Just wondering if you have sales figures for the RX1?
Do I need them? SAR reported a few times on Sony managers saying that demand of RX1 had surpassed expectations and hence why RX1R was made. Do you think a failed product would have a third iteration?
This doesn’t have to sell millions to make it work. It’s a halo product showing off they can do this and there is market appeal for this.
I can’t tell… The camera will definitely find its customers, but really, out of curiosity I’d like to know how many RX1s did they sell. The RX1R on Amazon:
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #5,396 in Camera & Photo (See Top 100 in Camera & Photo)
The RX1:
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #5,916 in Camera & Photo (See Top 100 in Camera & Photo)
Right now those numbers may not mean anything though… We may get an idea if Admin creates a poll 🙂
Well, Amazon’s rankings are variable, aren’t they? I think a poll will make owners and haters vote.
My guess is the only way of getting an aprox. number in a region is to call the authorised resellers and say you’re doing a piece on premium compact cameras and wonder whether they can tell you approx. number of units sold by model.
Weird, because i have two rx1, and I know 2 others in my city that have them. I also know someone who pre ordered rx1r 2 from a camera store here. Pretty popular camera i guess. Fotodiox also made a 2nd version of its hand grip. Now why would they do that if the camera wasnt selling well? Have you seen how many rx1 are even on ebay? Theres been over a hundred sold used in the past month.
Hi Ethan- I can’t seem to find the Fotodiox version two that you’re referring to. My RX1rii s coming in on Monday and I want a grip for it. On Amazon it said that version one will work but not fit perfectly.

I simply cannot understand why Sony refuses to put fully articulating screens on their higher end cameras. If this has a ‘selfie’ screen I’d buy one to replace nt rx100 iv.
Probably because there are much better solutions such as using the Playmemories mobile app on your much larger smartphone screen or using an external LCD like de CLM-FHD5. Not ideal for smaller cameras, but fully articulating screens would make smaller cameras bigger.
I prefer the tilting LCDs over the fully articulating ones since I will always end up turning them every way around instead of taking pictures.
I much prefer the fully articulating screens; one of my few beefs with Sony’s mirrorless line is that they don’t implement that screen that they have on their DSLT cameras (point of differentiation, I suppose). Besides the tremendous flexibility of it, one thing I like is that I can flip around the LCD against the body when I’m not using it, keeping it safe from getting scratched, etc. I probably have it facing that way more often than not on my DSLT bodies, only flipping it out when I need that capability when I’m shooting high/low, etc.
I have no beef with any screen idea but a screen with full articulation like the DSLT line, as I understand it, adds unnecessary girth for mirrorless or smaller camera classes.
Possibly, though it didn’t seem to in the DSLR/T line. If you look at an a580 (simple tilting) and A77 (fully articulating) for example, the screen sticks out about the same amount. It could be they’ve slimmed the tilting screens down for the mirrorless line, though; I haven’t compared thickness of those vs. the old DSLR ones yet.
The hinges on the A77 (I have it) adds bulk below the screen and two humps on the sides. Doesn’t look like much on the A77, but would look quite bulky on a RX1 or even a A7x body. It’s basically a good design, but not suitable for really small bodies.
The screen does more articulation (while not full articulation) and doesn’t add ANY size to the camera. Adding size is just an excuse in my option.
I meant that to say. The rx100 vi has a more articulating screen and it isn’t larger.
Not a gadget or a selfie point and shoot but a sophisticated tool. The previous variant (RX1) had a size and image quality that made it a primary camera for many of my projects.
Same here. Using it for work.
Right on. Mine arrives on Monday and I have a convention shoot starting on Wednesday. I will have this slung around my neck as well as my A7rii + Batis 85.
Very nice camera, a pity though that it’s a fixed focal length… a 24 – 50 or something like that would be awesome. And what the hell is it with this variable low-pass filter? Did they run out of ideas?
Only time will tell whether the VLPF will be a good thing or not.
Definitely. The gods of street photography all used zooms.
And I’m sure that you would purchase one immediately if your little criticisms were addressed, right?
Ah, I like how smooth and quiet the EVF pops up. Neatly done Sony!
I played with one of these today and man the auto focus is fixed and fast compared to my old Rx1. Beautiful cam wish I had $3200 + to own.
