Also Sony says FF mirrorless is “possible”

Image courtesy by an anonymous reader 🙂

it sounds like we are going to see a new Sony and Fuji Full Frame mirrorless battle in 2013! Sony manager Mark Weir unveiled at Imaging Resource that “Well, I think everyone understands that if we can make the VG900, we could make a still camera variant of that.“. And he is talking about a “rangefinder styled” camera. A NEX-9 with FF sensor?

Photokina is still not over but Fuji and Sony are already hinting some new exciting news for the next months. Should Canon and Nikon be worried for their DSLR FF market? I think yes!

  1. Every camera company out there say a FF CSC is possible.

    Who is offering one though?

Just yap yap yap and nothing to show but the same old cropped sensor cams in so many varieties and colors.

  2. Sony is. VG900 camcorder. We just need someone with an M mount lens to test it how it works with those rangefinder lenses as it will definitively work with SLR lenses.

And now, apparently Fuji says it can’t. From DPreview.com:

“It has also moved to quell suggestions that its XF lenses are ready for a full-frame X-mount camera. ‘It would not work – XF lenses could not be used with a full-frame sensor,’ said Hiroshi Kawahara, operations manager of Fujifilm’s product planning division.”

    1. Too bad the Leica sensor and electronics are made by someone else. Come to think of it, all Leica sensors are made by someone else. Not been there, not done that.

  3. worried? in the past there were a lot of still cameras without mirror or point&shot, all FF (film) and dslr were the top… nowdays they will do some mirrorless ff? and dslr will still be the top because all that a dslr can offer is way too much in contrast to a mirrorless… a ff mirrorless will be a good 2° body

    1. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? People *want it*. We want a lot of things we don’t need, no?

  4. There is no doubt Sony is making a full frame still camera with E mount.

The logic goes that Sony will introduce full frame E-Mount lens and then a full frame camer becomes natural. VG 900 IS a full frame camcorder. Meaning that they must be preparing full frame E-Mount lens. Otherwise what’s the point of always having A-Mount adapter?

  5. I also think it is safe to assume that Sony is going to release a FF E mount NEX camera but the huge problem is the lenses. Sony also has a massive problem of a horrible lens lineup. Since most of those lenses probably aren’t going to be useable with a FF sensor, Sony will need to release new lenses. Unless they release a large number of lenses with the camera, they will have issues since I don’t think anyone is going to trust them to continue releasing more quality lenses in a timely fashion.

  6. Canon or nikon is not afraid of Sonyminolta. CSc cameras, m43 or apsc or FF is only good for lenses that reach 200mm at best. after that it defeats the purpose of having a smaller camea set up. Now complete the circle of camera life back to dslrs. Canon and Nikon know this and that’s why they dont bother making serious CSC’s. It will all eventually lead back to big dslr’s once ppl want to use bigger lenses.

  7. 200mm+ only shooters is a pretty niche category. Plus unless you’re talking about the largest 1D for D4 cameras those lenses dwarf every body they are attached to so why worry? I think the APS-C & FF frame CSCs have Canon and Nikon spooked.

    1. Niche catagory? Tonnes of noobs buy those lenses. ..not to mention all the pros who use longer bigger lenses for work. Try talking someone to use a 400mm f4 lens on a fuji x body, it aint gonna happen. Canon and Nikon have the dslr market sewn up…should it get more serious, Nikon and Canon have the resources and know how to make a completely new and pro spec’d CSC line. You think Fuji’s x stuff is great? They dont even have a IL rangefinder pedigree that Canikon HAD. The way I see, it, all these lousy camera companies need a big head start, cause once the giant decides to do something serious…it will be like the film days, the rest will be begging for scraps.

  8. Are those full-frame highlights real? Because I doubt you could actually fit a full-frame in that Fuji mount the E-mount is a tight fit as-is.

  9. I thought the admin would have updated the info about Fuji. Neither the Fuji’s lenses nor the mount can take Full-frame sensor. See the photo above in the post.

E-mount however was designed to be big enough for full-frame.

  10. I agree very much that Sony’s NEX lenses lineup is poor. The bodies however are very good. Their strategy seems to be pumping out bodies at a fast pace, while sloooowly releasing poor quality cheap lenses. Just look at how fast they have new bodies in the last 2 years, nex5, nex3, nex5n, nex7, etc. I expect they would do the same for their FF lineup, good bodies and poor (and cheap) lenses selection. This will help them sell bodies quickly and jacking up price for M, R and all other FF lenses.

  11. For goodness sake, what will it take for people to get over this meaningless “full frame” (actually just another arbitrary frame size) fetish? The corner performance of both Fuji X and NEX is already very bad at wide angle – can you even imagine how terrible FF will be?

  12. Please correct these rumors! Fuji is not going for full frame, at least with it’s X-mount. They are still developing a new system and they believe in their sensor tech. There’s no need for them to go FF in next couple of years.

Ah, “full frame”. My Olympus mju:II does it. I still think I can take better shots with many other cameras.

  13. Full frame isnt to find sharpness, its for the FOV and bokeh you get. a 35mm on ff and a 23mm on aps-c is different. The feel, the angle, the effects, everything.

if sports are sharpness of concern aps-c is fine.

ff cameras are built with more quality as well, theres no denying in that.
