Every time I see it mentioned, I can’t get over on how useless Pentax Q is
From a technical point of view the Q is bested clearly by individual cameras:
– the 5-15 mm zoom and even the 8.5 mm f/1.9 prime are beaten in terms of low light performance, size, and price by the LX-7
– the 15-45 mm f/2.8 zoom is beaten by a E-PM1 + Olympus 45-150 mm in low light performance, though it is a bit more compact, price is pretty much a wash
– the fish-eye lens is likely beaten optically by fisheye adaptors for cameras like the LX-5 (given its bad performance as measured by photozone.de)
And in good light, the larger sensors of cameras like the LX-5, not to speak of the RX100 or the m43 cameras clearly beat the Q and cameras like the Canon G12 or the Lumix DMC-ZS15 almost match or beat the Q’s focal range for better (G12) or equal (ZS15) good light performance.
The comparison with the LX-5 is a telling one, excluding the new telezoom, it beats the Q in just about any category. And for a little bit larger camera and lens size, m43 beats the Q just hands down (and a GF5 + 14-42 mm is actually thinner than the Q with its kit zoom).
‘Photographers’ are such gad damn elitists! Try to understand, this camera really isn’t for YOU! Nor are all the other cameras you bemoan, everyone has different tastes, if not we’d all have the same republic sanctioned grey picture taking boxes. Isn’t it nice to have choice?

There are two kinds of photographers in this world. Ones who have tried the Q and recognize its value, and naysayers who criticize the system based on mindless speculation after looking at its’ stats on paper. I have owned many – too many- digital cameras over the years and the Q is one of the few keepers because it is FUN and produces some great images. If you go to DPReview you will see that Raist3d produces very fine photographs with his Q…I never seem to see any decent images produced by the haters though…wonder why that is….
Haters can’t buy whatever they want, so they hate for free.
Ugh. Why?
Pentax have a very strange idea of what is aesthetically pleasing. Their designs are HIDEOUS.
They haven’t designed a reasonable looking camera since the 70’s.
