Sony issues a new firmware update for the Sony A7rII !

Bildschirmfoto 2015-09-21 um 14.32.47

Sony just released the new 1.10 firmware update for the Sony A7rII. You can download it here
Windows: sony.com.sg/support/download/607881/product/ilce-7rm2.
Mac: sony.com.sg/support/download/607899/product/ilce-7rm2

But don’t be too excited yet as the promised 14 Bit RAW feature has yet NOT been included in that version: The benefits of this update are:

  1. Improved a symptom to rarely become front focus depend on shooting scene.
  2. Decreased chroma noise when long exposure NR is set off.
  3. Improved Hi continuous shooting speed when using with the flash.

P.S.: Thanks Idros for sharing!

  1. Exactly what no one asked for.

If it’s like FW updates for NEX7, one should NOT install this update.

It will probably cook even more the RAW.

        1. oh look, another clueless blogger with “proof”. The files opened in DCRAW (for example Rawherapee) do not show those corrections. It’s done in LR under the hood based on Metadata. And all RAW files are cooked to some extent to begin with.

    1. “Exactly what no one asked for.”

That’s right. People much prefer it when manufacturers don’t fix problems.

    2. Actually, plenty of folks asking for the long exposure fix… as for the other two, well… what they aren’t supposed to fix problems they know about?

          1. I found it on the Singapore Sony Site 🙂 , in Europe we can only use Windows, for the time being. 🙂

  2. Expect more refinements for a while – then I’m betting the guts will be transplanted into a bigger body, that will be labelled A9.

        1. Ohhhh… poor little SamsungR&D… What will he do when Samsung cameras aren’t taken seriously anymore? Oh Wait! That’s now!!

    1. Yes, but theirs is 1.5X larger than yours (size matters unless yours is smaller) you therefore must work harder on your technique………. 🙂

    2. Sorry, I think you mean to be SamaungS&R (steal and rebadge) right? I guess if they keep making things long enough they have to accidentally make something worthwhile, especially if they just “copy ’til they make it”. Oh wel, NX2 will be stillborn closing up shop before it’s ready, probably like you should have been.

      1. Don’t be mean. How would you feel if Sony had broken in, stolen all of your sensors and left you with a steaming pile of mft in their place?

      1. Since I’m after high resolution first and foremost and so the NX-1 wouldn’t be a viable upgrade for me from my current 24mp system.
That said, my current choices would be D810A, 5DSr and A7r II, though my only gripe with A7r II is/ was cooked RAW.

        1. I believe him.

I have first hand info from a friend, that smoking is not unhealthy at all. Not the slightest bit. Believe me, he definitely knows what he’s talking about, he works at Marlboro R&D.

          1. Another loser or maybe the same with multiple nicks…is your life so pathetic that you hang around a Sony forum instead of your “beloved” samsung? Talk about losers….

      2. Dude … What are you smoking? … the top rated sensors on DXOMARK are all Sony…. In the top 20… 18 of the top 20 cameras have Sony sensors… the NX1 comes in 26th… behind the Nikon 7100, 5200, 5500, 5300 … all with Sony APS-C Sensors … and the NX1 (83 rating) is way, way, way behind every Sony Full Frame sensor, most especially the A7r2 (98 rating), D810 (97 rating), D800E (96 rating) and A7r (95 Rating) sensors…. But I’m happy that you are happy with your toy NX1….

      3. Hey, I actually know the Samsung US technologist, great cameras, but you’re doing them ZERO favors over here trolling the crap you are!

    1. They have already said that they will release a firmware update to resolve the cRAW vs RAW issue… it’s just not in this firmware update… if this is what’s keeping you from buying the camera… it shouldn’t … image quality even with current cRAW is fantastic….

      1. Like the NEX-9 before it, it is an imagined high-end/professional e-mount camera body that would sit above the 7 line.

        1. Even a D610/6D equivalent in mirrorless would be nice. I believe it’s still a looong way till they can make a 5D3-level camera… maybe never with OSPDAF.

      2. A probable first DSLR-quality mirrorless. A7x are good mirrorless, but still nowhere DSLR level, and Sony have apparently abandoned their own DSLT line, so something must be coming.

    1. Will come with Samsung sensor crippled with compressed RAW due to Sony processing. Sony will cease sensor R&D in Q1 2016, market pressure from Samsung’s technology too big #insiderinfo

    2. A7rII is in all aspects what A9 needs to be. High-res, comparatively high speed continuous shooting, very good DR and ISO (and video). A hope that after few more weeks I discover that the only thing I’m really missing on my A7rII is the lack of “9” digit in the product name.

        1. Dual slots were necessary in former times where a 4 GB CF card costs half of the cam…

With 64 GB or even higher capacities for what reasons do you need dual slots? Long before the card is full you have to change batteries…

          1. It’s about redundancy. If you ever had a memory card fail after shooting half a day ( a live event that can not be re-created), then you will understand. Two slots allows you to record to two cards at once.

          2. In 10 years of shooting digital, I have not ever had an SD card go bad. But, on the other hand, I don’t use crappy no name cards. Additionally, if a card goes bad, it will likely be a bad bit that makes the MBR or partition table unreadable… most the time the actual data will be there and will be recoverable using disk recovery software … like SanDisk’s free RescuePRO software… the real threat of losing half a day’s shooting is infinitesimal as it means you have had a catastrophic failure across most the sectors of a card… but still use smaller cards, say 8GB, and the risk goes down even further… not that I would mind the A7r3 having 2 SD slots mind you…

          3. As Fonk pointed out, with film, we shot two bodies on important accounts, nothing has changed, one body wide-zoom, the other fast prime.

  3. No lens cap 30sec exposures pushed by 4 ev yet? I would really like to know how exactly they reduced chroma noise(I hope it’s not a simple software nr).

    1. “I hope it’s not a simple software nr…”

I guess that’s what it is, a NR (decreasing chroma noise) done in software (firmware update).

You didn’t expext some kind of hardware improvement, right? 😛

      1. If you mean hardware changes like a changed processors then the answer should be obvious ^^
But I guess that the hardware can be tweaked to a very small degree by changing voltages or reducing heat generation by other parts of the camera. For example the screen brightness is lowered as soon as 4k recording starts. Switching off the rear lcd as well as evf backlight during long exposure could lower the temperature and thereby reduce crosstalk.
Also it is unclear if this changes bulb long exposures or normal exposures up to 30 seconds or both.
But given Sony’s history to ruthlessly cook raw files, I really need to lower my expectations.

          1. I think you got me wrong. Beside the price the A7rII is the perfect match for my needs if it wasn’t for this le noise issue. In order to give you a rough comparison please take a look here

            http://www.brendandaveyphotography.com/?page_id=726

and compare it to other cameras. This comparison does not take resolution differences into account and the results overstate the issue a little. If Sony could really reduce dark current noise this would be huge for me and I might shell out my crazy-money before the first price drop.

  4. Don’t upgrade until we find out that the A7 hack hoax really is a hoax.

Maybe Sony blocked the hack on this new firmware?

  5. INSANE. I guess two major issues were : lossy raw and Long exposure confeti noise. From a Dpreview reader he did a test and the noise is gone: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3904475?page=2

This was a deal breaker for me for long exposure photography. If what he says is true, added to the lossy RAW solved in future update then this A7R II is my next camera. Gotta find the cash though 😀

    1. This will be your “deal breaker” until it’s fixed. Then you will move down the list of troll talking points and the next thing on the list will be your “deal breaker” Last week everyone had to push shadows 6 stops, this week everyone is a astrophotographer. If you don’t like the camera or the manufacturer buy something else, but stop the pathetic concern trolling. It’s getting old.

        1. Forget it. I think Emph is a sick guy.
I actually said that I love A7R II, and that the important main issue (for me and my use) has been solved and the guy says to stop pathetic trolling.
Sick guy I am telling you 😉

  6. I am very happy about this fix! I just spent a week backpacking in the North Cascades in Washington, and had a chance to do a good amount of night landscapes. Having shot primarily with a D810 previous to this, I was very used to a short exposure stacking + dark frame removal workflow. I executed the same workflow with the A7RII and was quite disappointed with the results – no matter what I did, there was a significant amount of fixed pattern chroma noise left over after dark frame subtraction!

I noticed this same result on the D810 prior to the “free service” initiative they did with early cameras to resolve this problem, which was completely resolved after I recieved that camera back. So, I am quite hopeful that this firmware update resolves the same issue with the A7RII!

I will do some testing tonight and see how it fares :).

    1. And Samsung sensor! Nikon D810 is already using Samsung sensor, just black propaganda claiming Sony sensor to prevent major earthquake in the market and prevent camera industry from collapsing due to Samsung’s innovative might. #endsony

  7. The only ones I have seen use RAID0 to increase capacity and speed, not for redundancy. It would be nice if there was a RAID1 alternative and SDXC would be even better rather than MS.

    1. What is worse, is that after the firmware upgrade, the possibility to capture an unprocessed long exposure is lost. AFAIK, you cannot downgrade firmware, so that possibility is permanently lost for those who have performed the upgrade.

    2. Fred Miranda wrote:
When comparing chroma noise from both A7RII firmwares (1.0 vs 1.10), I’m actually thinking it was actually a downgrade. Anybody shares the same thought?
      Fred

Yes, I think your images from 1.10 look much worse than from your image from 1.0. I’m leaving mine on 1.0 and hope I’m not eventually forced to have my RAWs processed in this way to get lossless RAW files.
