New Nikon J2 and 11-27.5mm lens officially announced.

It’s a bit strange to announce a new camera and lens in early August but this certainly means that Nikon has a lot of stuff to announce before Photokina 🙂
Here are the links to the new J2 and 11-27.5mm:

  1. In ghist:
    Slightly smaller than J1.
Higher res on LCD (920k up from 460k).
New selection on mode dial for beginners.
Slightly smaller kit zoom with no OIS (!).
100 $ less expensive than J1 for the kit.

Make your own conclusions from that.

  2. New zoom is 11mm shorter than 10-30. It’s 31mm. Even Panasonic’s pancake-zoom only 4mm shorter.
    Seems good!

  3. What do you mean “seems good” ?
It has a shorter zoom range (2.5x vs. 3x), and no OIS. And for that you gain 11 mm in length.
Panasonics pancake is for a much bigger image circle, and has OIS.

  4. Turns out, the lens will not be offered as a kit lens.
Which means, people who buy this lens either already have basically the same zoom lens, or the 10 mm prime with almost the same focal length as the 11-27.5 mm zooms beginning focal length.
Who will shell out money for something that really does not add anything to ones arsenal of lenses ?

  5. Nobody has a problem with this being only 30mm on the wide end?
Seems pretty lacking compared to any other point and shoot.

The funny thing is every body were calling RX100 from Sony a failure because of the 30mm wide.
Now that nikon release the same silly thing just to fight with Sony in terms of initial kit size nobody mentions it…

    1. The Sony is 28mm, and in raw covers the same degrees of a 24mm on FF though distorted. So it’s doing wider and faster than Nikon will ever have. Still can’t believe that the new lens isn’t even the new kit.

  6. So Nikon’s came up with a new NIKKOR 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens for their Nikon 1 series, their older kit lens the NIKKOR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6… said to be smaller and lighter only. Pretty pointless I might say…
