Lumix G6 dark halo issues from Jon Wide on Vimeo.
If you own (or will soon own) the new Panasonic G6 know that there is a dark halo issue (watch video on top). The good news is that there is a little trick to get rid of the issue. Oscillian at Personal-View reports:
This is caused by i.Dynamic settings. Turn OFF to avoid these artifacts!
Thanks Oscillian for finding and solving the issue!

Waiting for comments “I don’t see it”. 😛
When using iDynamic on Lumix cameras halos can occur when iDynamic is set to High. What’s happening is that the Venus engine is trying to render detail within the entire tonal range of the image. However in high contrast situations using a setting of High could result in a pseudo HDR look and with it the pseudo HDR halos.
I usually keep my iDynamic setting to Standard or off unless I’m going for an HDR look.
Understanding how to best use iDynamic takes time and practice. I’ll have a in depth article about the feature on Small Camera Big Picture in the near future.
I actually could see this ¨flaw¨ used creatively, much like lens flare or vignetting can be put to use depending on the footage. This fascination with clinically flawless stills and video is really tiring sometimes, I understand the need for sharp lenses and noiseless image but beyond that ? if it’s something you can turn off I woudln’t waste my time reporting this as some kind of terrible issue.
Adding imperfections in post is much easier then removing them.
But I agree, its not exactly the end of the world and can be avoided, so no real issue.
What i don’t understand is the need for clinically flawless post all the time. This complaining about what is being said by whom. Dude it’s a free internets, if you don’t care about it the next site is one click away. Can’t all be hot leaks. Wait, why are you reading this, what are you still here for wasting your time.
ps. I was interested to learn about this.
*posts 🙂
+1000!!!
I noticed some purple flare and blurry spots in a few shots I took yesterday. It’s all I could do to keep from performing seppuku with my monopod.
It’s like the fixation on sharpness above all!
Clinical. Flawless.
BORING.
Makes your subject pop!
If the noticed that in Panasonic they would call it a feature and people would praise it.
Now every body will post negative about them this week… bummer. 🙂
Not sure about the “people would praise it” part, or turning negative, why’s that exactly? G6 is a pretty sane choice as it is, without any magic marketing. If its users would be easily gullible they’d have gone with a Canon Rebel in the first place.
So they already included a switch from scratch to take care of this artifact..awesome!
if any of you are a gamer. this is the same shadow effect used in battlefield 3 LOL
Giulio your photos are terrible you just are sponsored panasonic seller
That gets paid for them. How bout you? When was the last time you sold one of your spectacular masterpieces? And no your aunt doesnt count.
