Looking good to me! I’m hoping the lens hood matches the diameter of the base, and reverses to effectively take up zero extra space.
This and many more to come like this for the Xpro2 ovf! Would be nice if the lens would be shown mounted on the new Xpro2 body. I think that was Fujifilm intention, until it was delayed….
So the 35mm f/1.4 is:
9mm longer
5mm wider (at the widest part, the difference at the front will be greater)
17 gramms heavier
and has no WR
The optical design (8 elements, 6 groups, 1 aspherical) and aperture blades (7) differs too.
I do think that this lens will deliver sharp images with a lot of contrast and focus faster. Nice for work on the street where you don’t need f/1.4
For everyone owning the f/1.4 version? This is not the lens you are looking for 😉
Yes, the 35 f/~1 will be for us 🙂

Oh boy. it should say stop, but who cares ^^
Oct 15: Aperture leaked
Oct 16: Exterior photos leaked
Oct 17: Exterior photos from the other side leaked
Oct 18: On-camera lens images leaked
Oct 19: Near camera lens photos leaked
Oct 20: Lens has been stolen.
Oct 21. Single worldwide review – X-Pert Corner post. The big question: who stole the lens.
tomorrow, at 01:00 AM New York time
Since this site is read by people from all over the world, would it be possible to tell time by some international standard such as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)? That would make things a little easier for some of us. I mean, England is still the center of the world, right? lol
I am on the eastern time myself but I agree. I don’t know why the admin chose New York time but hey, he’s the owner of FR 🙂
I believe that more people will be confused if I write UTC or GMT. And since I want them to avoid to google UTC / GMT time, I prefer to use the current time on popular cities.
EU-residents should pretty much know, the time difference bettwen LA and NY, or Berlin and NY.
But to be sure, I now added the time in Berlin.
That’s your prerogative, he-he. And I think I have an idea where New York is, but where the heck is Berlin? ?
So, they have this special event with a new lens and a converter?
If the weight is correct this makes it even more of a fail in my eyes. If there’s very little size benefit, little price difference and no noteworthy weight difference, what’s there to like? The only thing this lens offers compared to an updated f1.4-version (WR, faster AF) is the tapered design. So it’s a niche lens for only X-Pro shooters.
Fuji, there are many other gaps in your lineup that should have been filled first! A 23 f2 and 56 f2 are only the most obvious. A leaf shutter portrait lens would be another though that can hardly be considered a gap, considering nobody else (except MF systems) has one.
please, enlighten me. How would you update the AF in the f/1.4 to a stepper or linear motor, without changing the whole optical formular (and thus making the lens bigger).
The new lens is smaller, lighter, doesn’t block the optical view finder, is weather sealed and you can bet, that it focuses faster and is sharper with higher contrast.
I’m not an optical engineer and have little knowledge of the stuff going on behind AF technically. I’ll be happy if YOU enlighten ME what exactly the problem would be (seriously). The way I see it there is glass in the lens that needs to be moved. In what way does it matter which technology does this?
And why would changing the optical formula mean the lens gets bigger?
sure. take a look at the f/1.4 version. When it does focus, it moves out (and in) quite a bit. You probably would not want this when you have a weather sealed lens (furthermore I don’t know, if it would be “compatible” with a linear motor – I think not). So you would need to put the focal element (or focal group, maybe even a floating element) into the lens. Now you would need to make the lens bigger, to give it room to do the focussing.
Same thing with the 60mm. It’s small because it focusses on the outside (Quite a bit!). Compared with internal focal lenses it’s tiny.
Fuji probably took this approach, to keep the size down as much as possible (due to the optical view finder of the X-Pro1)
It sounds reasonable but I do have my doubts:
We have plenty of zoom lenses that move a barrel in and out while zooming and are claimed to be WR, why should it be a problem for focussing mechanisms to achieve the same thing?
My Nikkor 50 1.8G moved in and out while focussing, uses an ultrasonic motor and should have similar glass size compared to the Fuji. Worked for Nikon and AF was great!
Zooming and focusing are two different things. For WR lenses, Furthermore it’s better for WR lenses to not have too many moving parts (see all those 70-200 equivalents). The standard zoom most of the time needs to, because it would be enormous otherwise.
The ultrasonic motor of dslrs is another thing. That’s an AF motor not suited for mirrorless.
Anyway. Looking at the 35mm f/2 it should be obvious that there was just no way for fuji, to make a 35mm f/1.4 with faster AF, WR and probably better image quality.
Where’s the urgency for a new 56mm lens, there are two available at present, the older of which is available for good money at present, seeing as I’ve just obtained one new for a little under £500.
While Fuji is dragging its heels with petty lens releases and converters nobody asked for, Leica is, you know, innovating at the top end: http://petapixel.com/2015/10/20/leica-sl-a-new-24mp-full-frame-camera-to-compete-in-the-mirrorless-war/
Check the EVF on that puppy.
If Fuji understands its customers, it knows that it needs to be seen as owning – or at least making a claim to – the space at the top, to appeal to the middle. That’s not happening.
I think you should get two. One for the glove box. It’s only $7500 for the body and $4900 for the zoom. Go for it!!!
2kg for the standard zoom+body and over 10000€. Yes, that what we would need ….
@admin so Fuji Australia just announced a new firmware. No details of the fw though. It’s coming October 29.
7500 USD for the Leica, and it’s butt ugly… Sign me up… not.
Thanks for the full specs, exactly what I was waiting for–unfortunately I’m gonna pass on this one. MFD is even less than the 35mm f1.4, and slower, just slightly smaller–so less useful overall. Might look OK for new P2, but not a looker for anything else.
If it’s “exactly” what you were waiting for, why would you pass on it?
I think he meant he was waiting for the specs.
35 f2 autofocus time at 0.08 seconds. 35 1.4 focus is very slow and super noisy. If you come from other brands, you will be shocked at 35 1.4 noise and slowness.
35/2 is 170g, 35/1.4 is 187g – not a big difference at all, something you will not even notice – in the bag or on the camera. Price new on ebay for 35/1.4 is $411, again the difference you will not notice. But the difference in DoF and in noise in low light shot, a whole stop, you will notice.
