  1. assuming it is going to have uniform design across systems, that is a pretty awkward choice for a still MFT photography… huge 🙂

    1. Video shooters might like it. The GH3 would make it look normal size. 😉

      F2 could come in handy.

Still, it isn’t really meant as such. Aperture on the base, and not stepless. :/

  2. Unfortunate focal length… in competition with the very good and quite cheap 14mm f/2.5 and 20mm f/1.7. If this was <=12mm I'd be all over it, but as it stands it just seems hard to get excited about. (Though maybe if it's $100….)

    1. More and more un-natural lenses are presented for the MFT. Tell No to these produsers of un-natural focal lenghts.

Make more standards like the 50, the 35, the 85, the 24, 28 and 20 (FF eqvivalent). And make zem fast. The Panasonic Leica 25/1.4 is super-natural. Must get more of that! The Samyang 7.5/3.5 is also good…

  3. I would call this an adapted APS-C lens — not native MFT. On MFT it is huge, a weird focal length, and not that fast. One would be much better off with the Olympus 17mm/1.8.

      1. Yes, my Four-Thirds ZD 14-35mm f/2.0 has a 77mm filter size also, but then, that’s a large aperture zoom lens.

    1. Should been 17,5mm. Thats a real 35mm. I say 17 i un- natural. 16 is even more un-natural!

It feels unaccurate. Like its almost a standard lenght, but not quite, they didnt bother… “mft is just for su..ers anyway… they just want cheap awkward lenses to go with their stupid small cameras…”

      1. Sorry it sounds more like one is brainwashed with a standard value for several focal lenghts. In practise your 17,5 might be either longer or shorter.

    1. If MFT version will have 77mm filter size (and again MF), I’m afraid this lens is already a history, for real enthusiasts only, unless the price will be much lower than Oly. I hope they don’t want to go Sigma way.

  4. Now I can take Samyang and Sigma off my lens list. Looks like Tamron is the only 3rd party making native m43 lenses.

    1. Errrr, are you completely blind to the 7.5mm?
It’s the best lens of it’s kind, beating the equivalent panasonic in every point except for AF….

          1. How can it truly beat it in price when it doesn’t have an electronic interface or weather sealing? The effective (135 format) 1mm is good, but will it be a truly noticeable difference?

  5. Disappointing. After the success of the 7.5mm I was hoping for some real native wide angles, like and 8mm or 10mm. Remounted APS-C doesn’t really cut it.

  6. This is a DSLR lens also available for mirrorless systems, so it’s necessarily overly large and heavy if compared with mirrorless-only lenses.

For SLR systems, though, the lens is a first of its kind. Samyang continues to surprise, and if they should start making AF lenses someday, the competition might suffer severe and lasting injuries by the surprise *that* will cause.

  7. For micro43? Joke? It is huge. Equivalent 32mm (FF) f/2 and filter size 77mm? I had 77mm for 17-40/4 FF. There is Olympus 17mm f/1.8, much smaller, filter size 46mm, faster, with AF. The only Samyang dedicated for micro43 is small, good fisheye 7,5mm f/3.5.

For APS it has a sense – equivalent 24mm f/2. But for micro43 no. Forecasted sale of this lens – zero. Maybe one, if the price will be 20$. Much better is Sigma 19/2.8 – good IQ, AF, smaller and cheap.

  8. m4/3 ? no
Canon mount + m4/3 SpeedBooster ? also not so good.. = ~11mm/1.4 (not far away from SLRMagic 12mm/1.6)

  9. If you can handle the weight and since it is MF only lens I guess you could rather buy the APS-C version of this and pair it with a Lns turbo or Speed Booster…

That would make it a whole lot more interesting… :-)cca 23mm f1.4 If I am not mistaken…

But still not cool enough. We already have a native 12mm f2.0 I guess one more stop wont appeal to 99,9% of people for the added weight.

  10. After 12, 14, 16, 17, 19 and 20, only 10, 11, 13, 15 and 18 are missing until you can cover the whole 10-20 range with a different prime lens! Yay!

Seriously, where the f is my 10mm 2.8 (pancake)!

    1. Oh yeah, 10 or 12 wide angle primes carried in a bandolier and look like Pancho Villa! Talk about a fashion statement! 😉

  11. They are too late with this one. To many other cheap options that are smaller, faster, and have auto focus. This is dead in the water.

  12. Well, I don’t want to be too harsh towards Samyang. They did give us the superb 7.5mm fisheye. Hopefully they’ll step up to the plate in the future with another dedicated MFT/FT offering.

  13. Most of you missed the real reason for this lens. It is meant for Sony, Fuji and other APS-C cameras because 16mm is super wide and at f/2 very useful for those systems, especially for some mirrorless systems which have very few lenses.

For MFT, a very large manual focus 16mm f/2 lens is very ordinary, if not irrelevant. Samsung just decided to add the MFT mount because it is easy to do so and try to sell a few more. It is not really dedicated to MFT at all. Just like Sigma (19mm and 30mm), Samsung just added MFT mount to what are basically APS-C lenses. Unless there is something really special, e.g. truly exceptional sharpness, or a dirt cheap price, then what’s the point?

  14. Um, the Voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95 has a 58mm filter thread. Sure, it’s 17.5mm, not 16mm, but it’s also more than 2 stops faster. Unless this Samyang lens is, like, $200, I don’t see the point.

  15. Another boring adaptation of aps-c native lens, too big for an f2 lens…I pass on this one, still waiting a 8 mm f2.8 tack sharp prime, who’s gona do it first ?

  16. Get one of the apsc dslr versions and a speedbooster and turn it into a 16mm 1.4 on m43.
1.4 is quite fast for 16mm (32eq) on m43. Use the small change to get a set of wheels on the front to move it.
