The cine sites Cinema5D and Newshsooter are eagerly testing the video quality of the new A7rII. Today both posted their rolling shutter test and both came to the same conclusion:
Cinema5D writes:
Rolling shutter on the new Sony A7RII is both good and bad. If you need a camera with good rolling shutter performance in 4K (UHD) you can either resort to the Sony A7RII Full Frame Mode or avoid this camera altogether and go with the Panasonic GH4 instead. The Sony A7s performs better, but the difference isn’t huge.
Newsshooter writes:
The results re-affirmed to me what I knew from my earlier tests. The jello effect is pretty bad when the camera is set in S35 mode. It is very similar to the performance of the sister a7S in full frame mode. For fast moving subjects and sports this could be a real problem. Luckily if you switch to full frame mode its a different story. The rolling shutter is much reduced. How much? well it is very close to the M4/3 sensor of the GH4. This comes as quite a surprise as the GH4 sensor is much smaller.

You can reduce rolling shutter in adobe premiere, so not a big problem.
Looks like FF is the way to go for handheld or action stuff. Crop mode is better in low light, most of my shooting will be FF.
I have been back and forth on ordering the A7rii. I would use it
about half the time for 4k video, and this jello-judder effect makes me think
that I should wait for a future model that has the processing power to handle
fast moving 4K video. I had the RX10ii for a few days last week and this was so
bad with it that I returned the camera.
The most exciting thing I’m seeing here is 7ms for 1080p HD in crop mode. I wonder what the figure is for FF HD? I’d shoot 98% HD and not really use 4K that much.
Roll that beautiful bean footage.
Manageable and expected (though i thought it would’ve been less prominent in super35).
Might be a firmware issue. Although pixel binning in FF vs a full readout in super35 might be the real cause.
Don’t make up stuff. There is no firmware issue.
Open your eyes wide enough and read again….
I said “might be” which means that if it is, Sony MIGHT fix it in the future. I also said something else, but you are apparently too blind to see that as well.
Next time – buy glasses.
For 99% of situations, yes, not a big problem. If you’re shooting an aircraft propeller or a turbine spin, then you’re out of luck with just about anything there is on the market. Global shutter in that sutuation is the only option.
Well, Dear Sony. Here’s your homework.
Not always, and depending on the target deliverable, can be a huge problem, but for the price, does a great job. Not every project is going to be shot on Alexa.
There also seems to be some sort of lag / acceleration of the effect which I’m assuming is due to IBIS? For any type of panning or panning test, it should have been turned off, if it was in fact on. I really don’t see any use of IBIS except for shots which should really be done on sticks and are very careful to remain very still. It makes typical handheld shots look cheap and unprofessional.
Only for pans, if you have something fast moving and your camera is static not so much.
The HD RS is pretty impressive. Any word on what kind of readout the camera uses for FHD? I’m guessing it is pixel binned, but any word on the IQ? Everything I have seen focussed on the 4K.
kind of weird since with the A7s it’s the opposite, you get a much better rolling shutter performance with the S35 mode. my guess is that to achieve that low light performance improvement in S35, Sony is running some serious software/hardware related denoising, otherwise there wouldn’t be such sensitivity performance improvement and rolling shutter would be quicker than it was witht he FF, maybe just as quick as they got with the HD mode.
Has there been a noise test done for the HD mode – both FF and S35? If so, can somebody please link me 🙂
“Luckily if you switch to full frame mode its a different story. The

Not too surprising, as in FF video mode A7rII line-skips – you lose the low-light advantage of FF.
Another byproduct of the CMOS sensor with a “rolling shutter” is the partial exposure in the presence of strobe flashes. You can see that nasty effect on celebrity footage when there are a lot of paparazzi taking pictures (TMZ, Extra, Insider…). It looks even worse in slow motion. Is partial exposure still an issue on newer cameras?
