  1. Well done Kai and team. I feel very informed about the new Batis lens after viewing this excellent truly hands-on video. First time ever I was able to sit through a full Kai review without skipping over the needless schoolgirl silliness and annoying overdone sarcasm. Hope to see more of these type videos coming from the otherwise talented Kai in the future.

  2. Looks like there is a “battle” brewing between Jason Lanier (Sony User) and Angry Photographer (Nikon User) on YouTube. Jason made a video about why he left Nikon for Mirrorless (Sony) and Theoria (Angry Photographer) had some choice words about it. Its interesting to hear some of the points from both sides on the Sony vs DSLR/Nikon points

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4tQPFIkO8A

    1. I llike Jason’s work but when he talks about sony he only ever mentions the positives and never the negatives. Alll in all though the angry photographer is going wway overboard with this shit heh.

    2. There is no reason for Jason to respond to this. None whatsoever. Don’t waste your time. Take pics.

      1. hah. I don’t know if this so-called ‘angry photographer’ is an idiot, but he certainly sounds like one here..in his own words, no less!

        1. Well, let’s just say if that “angry photographer”‘s rant makes himself feel better, let him be because we don’t want to see his mental illness gets even worse since I bet there are currently no cure for his lunacy~

        2. The “Angry Photographer” sounds like he’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Needs professional help.

    3. Bit late to be ‘seeing the future with mirrorless’ XD
These conversions are amazing and beautiful, we must support them through this magical stage in their lives, and help them settle in with open arms, to EVF and the limitless love to be found in open mount :] together! All we ask is a small contribution in the form of kit lens buy and maybe all the new cameras as they come out 😉 Welcome to THE Sony!

    4. I know. I was watching this all last night. It is some seriously heavy shiiit! It’s absolutely insane.

  3. Kai makes the worst so called reviews I’ve ever seen, if man can call what he makes a review.

Anyway, I’m sure the Zeiss Batis are awesome lenses.

    1. He is standing away from regular reviews , I think his reviews are easier to understand for beginners or people not interested in tech and specs of the lens.

      I like his work

    2. You then haven’t seen enough so called “reviews” on Youtube. Most are worst than this one (e.g. John Sison). If you want a real review, don’t look for a video but for an article.

  4. Kai is a good entertainer, I watch their videos for the 2/3ds humour and 1/3rd photography related content.

  5. I wonder if Kai is maturing along with Sony’s camera range? He’s even dressing smartly at the very end…

  6. I quite like Kai’s reviews, they are entertaining and show cool areas of HK. He sometimes makes rather accurate critical remarks too. In this video he appears more mellow than usual, perhaps with a larger audience comes a larger inclination to not alienate some?

I wonder if the Batis rubber focus grip attracts pollen the way the Touit one does.

    1. i just came to write… the same thing. This is fun, interesting and easy to understand! The 85mm seems again to be really THE must have… myabe more than the 25mm. Let s just see real reviews with deep test, measurements…

  7. The 85/1.8 looks amazing. I assumed they would go for sharpness and they have and I feared it might lose the lovely bokeh of the A-mount 85/1,4 but it in this video and in other samples I have seen it looks smooth and gentle too; really looks like it might be a great lens.

I’m not sure about the 25/2 – I think it will be a great lens for landscapes as it looks sharp and contrasty while also rendering fine detail but on some of the more close up type shots in other samples I have seen the bokeh looked quite nervous to me. The A-mount 24/2 is a very unusual lens and one not many people buy but it has a very nice rendering and the bokeh is wonderful for a wide angle lens – it’s really one of the hidden gems of the A-mount system. The new FE 25/2 looks like it could be sharper but the bokeh looks more harsh, will look forward to seeing a direct comparison.

I imagine the 135/1.8 will remain A-mount only as a lens like that would always be unbalanced on a mirrorless body but maybe a FE135/2 would be nice. Or better yet the legendary Zeiss 21/2.8 in FE mount. Genuinely excited to see what Sony and Zeiss have next for us!

    1. It’s better than listening to some old dry balls droning on about all list of detailed specifications. That’s sufficient to put any normal persons glass eye to sleep. Kai’s reviews and street walks are refreshing entertainment.

  8. Like I said before, A7 series is really building up to have an excellent lens line up. As far as I understand it, from the prime side of things, there are no mediocre lenses:

    25/2 batis
    28/2 sony
    35/2.8 zeiss/sony
    35/1.4 zeiss/sony
    35/2 loxia
    55/1.8 zeiss/sony
    50/2 loxia
    85/1.8 batis

And now there is IBIS and XAVC-s on A7II and A7rII

      1. True..but I wasn’t sure if they would count as “lenses” although they are, by definition, lenses.

    1. It really needs something along the lines of a 2.8/21 and a 2.8/18 (without resorting to converters) and a 2/135 to be relatively complete but we are starting to make some progress on this whole FE thing 🙂

      1. Samyang 135mm is pretty damn good. Even though it’s DSLR lens with built-in adapter. At that focal length native lens won’t be much smaller.

  9. Very unlikely to happen, Zeiss stated that they don’t want to compete Sony with the Batis line…
I would like a 50mm Batis too, because 55mm is not wide enough for me.

  10. I guess everyone here is trying to sell something to afford A7R II with some real E-mount lenses like that 85mm :/

I’m already selling almost all my legacy lenses 🙁
I love them but we must be realistic .. Love won’t buy you A7R II .. Damit

  11. I went to a car show today and saw mostly DSLR’s. I’m suprised how many people where still lugging around the big ol Nikon. I did see one Sony- I think it was a NEX5 or something like that. Mostly boat anchors. I guess they didn’t get the message. Don’t worry, I let them know.

  12. 20mm f/2 with the inherent short flange distance advantage everyone bemoaned before 🙂

  13. I’m like everyone else, getting thrilled by the hype of the tech advances of the A7 series, but then reality hits, that I don’t want to carry bulky FF lenses when I travel. And reality hits when comparisons between FF and APS-C photos, in real world conditions, are quite hard to distinguish – yes, FF results are better, but not enough for me to lug heavy gear around, particularly with restrictions of carry-on luggage with budget airlines. Hence, I want to know: where are the similar radical tech developments in Sony’s APS-C cameras? I want to feel the love for Sony APS-C.

  14. I’m not buying into the smaller sensor = smaller lenses spin.

In fact, the closest match to the 85mm Batis (475 grams) on APS-C is the Fuji 56mm f/1.2 (405 grams), and on M43 it is the PanaLeica 42.5 f/1.2 (425 grams). They are all very similar in size and weight.

And the closest match to the 25mm Batis (335 grams) on APS-C is the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 (375 grams). Very similar.

And don’t come with the light gathering nonsense. Please refer to http://www.dpreview.com/articles/2666934640/what-is-equivalence-and-why-should-i-care

    1. You missed the wonderful Sony 55mm 1.8 ZA which is only 280g and 7cm large. And no one can say, the 55 suffers anywhere on IQ.

  15. If you want bang-for-buck, then the A7 cameras and lenses are too much of an early-adopter product. Early adopter and good value rarely go hand in hand. In that case you are better off with Canikon + Sigma glass.

And I had applied your strategy to the Zeiss Loxia lenses, I’d probably still be waiting a couple more years as Zeiss cannot keep up with demand. And I’m using those lenses daily, so I’d rather spend the $$$ and have some use rather than waiting indefinitely to save a few hundred dollars.

  16. I m not a native english speaking so i will surely not get every subtelty of what they say but i am a big fan of Digitalrev TV or TheCameraStore TV. Both are funny and the most interesting and entertaining reviews from what i have seen yet on internet….

  17. Presumably a telephoto at 180mm or 200mm and in lens stabilizer would match up well with the new fantastic AF, or perhaps we accept now that the system can utilize other makes as its own and cover sports supremely too while focusing on its own compact high image quality range of lenses. I’m sure these new improvements could see ALL of the nay saying overturned and replaced with the contrary in time. Matching telephoto adapters used with other make lenses? perhaps Metabones will sort that out with demand for it. Anyone know if they will already work with say the Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 in canon mount and Sigma telephoto adapters? I don’t know about that stuff so I want that addressed before the ‘cool down’ period of rapid conversions occurs XD

  18. I can see people creaming their jeans over these “affordable Otuses”.

Bought my bro an Otus 85, he is now in dreamland.

  19. Sorry for the off-top comment, but has any of you guys used Zeiss 135 Apo on Sony cameras? I’m talking about ZE/ZF f2.0 version.
