(SR3) Finally some A99 successor rumor. Coming mid September and has 4K recording.

A source finally managed to gather some info about the next A-mount camera. He told me that:

– A99II was planed to be released along with the A7II back in November. But Sony decided to work on a more advanced version of the camera.
– The A99II is now scheduled to be announced in mid-September
– It has internal 4K recording and new sensor
– It will be launched along a new 24-105mm f/4.0 lens and a new Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 SSM.
– Still not sure if also the 135mm f/1.8 SSM will be announced among the A99II

  1. I wonder if they’ll go for a heavier, larger camera and attach some more high-end features to compete with the D4-1Dx crowd. Since they got the compact full frame bodies covered by A7x, they might be able to do that.

    1. Making the A99 bigger and heavier doesn’t mean it can compete with D4 or 1DX. If there is any competition, than it is with the D810 or 5Diii. And even that is hard enough. The current A99 failed there miserably.

      1. A7x already compete nicely with 5Diii and D810, I’d prefer Sonys in most situations due to ergonomics (EVF, tiltable LCD etc). What the A7x can’t do is shooting sports. Maybe they’ll upgrade the A99 and bring it to the level of D4/1Dx series bodies.

        1. “… the A99 and bring it to the level of D4/1Dx series …”

Like I said, I seriously doubt this will materialize. But, who knows?

          1. Yeah I doubt it too but it would be logical if they could pull that off. But in that case, I’d expect some specialized “action” lenses, not the overglorified zoom lenses they’ve been announcing for A mount lately.

        2. Since Sony has E-mount to cover their amateur/semi-pro user base, and since full sized DSLR bodies are becoming increasingly niche, Sony needs to produce a serious 1Dx competitor in A-mount. Doesn’t mean it has to have a built-in grip, but it needs to have a burst of 12 FPS minimum, unlimited or greatly extended buffer, amazing AF and a shutter cycle of 300,000.

        3. I thought for sure that SONY would introduce a pro-level a A7xx with an integrated vertical grip and a single long lithium battery. It stands to reason with the advent of the f1,4 35 as the first in another series of fast E-glass. I’m calling this my own SR7

      2. “The current A99 failed there miserably”…?

I think that is unfair. The truth is that the A99 is a fantastic camera. Built like a tank and so easy to use. Yes, it has its foibles and some questions over comparable performance, but those aren’t clear cut by any means and I’d have matched it with a 5DIII any day.

The ONLY reason I changed was simply weight as I get older.

If Sony make a similar leap in performance as they did with the A7 series and concentrate on the perceived weak spots then an A99II could leave the industry breathless!

        1. Just to be clear: I did not say the A99 is a bad product. I said, the A99 failed to compete with D810 and 5Diii.

          1. I have to disagree, especially concerning the 5DIII.

It is no better in terms of resolution, the Canon AF is not particularly fast, and the DR is more limited. Certainly high ISO noise is lower, but for most occasions this is of little or no concern. I would take an A99 over a 5DIII almost every time.

As to the D810, it does rate slightly higher in most areas, but it should: it’s a newer, more expensive camera! Even then, though, the advantages are very slight and I doubt many would ever notice in the final result.

I’m not denying that you could argue about which is best, but ‘failed miserably’ is simply not the case.

          2. Sorry, you totally missed my point. By “competing” I was not talking about specs or actual performance. There is no doubt the A99 is better than D5iii/D810 in some areas. I was talking about sales figures only. I thought that was clear. Competition means, that a significant amount of customers do NOT buy a 5Diii or D810 in favor of an A99. Again, in this regards it failed miserably.

BTW: This is not only the cameras fault, it has to do with the whole brand ecosystem. (cameras, lenses, support, marketing, brand recognition etc.)

I hope I was unequivocal this time.

          3. I will accept that it won’t have sold anything like as many as those models. However, your initial post referred to body specifics, which implied the competing was regarding performance, not sales figures, which is why I felt the need to contradict.

Of course, without knowing detailed fiscal expectations and motives behind Sony producing the A99 it’s hard to determine just how much of a ‘failure’ they would consider it to be.

In addition, if your viewpoint is to be accepted, then it would suggest that no-one else should ever create a new camera as they cannot possibly produce the range of accessories and lenses at the same time to compete with established brands. On such a basis the Samsung NX1 is doomed from the outset!

I suspect, though, that Sony and Samsung have a much longer term view and only time will tell whether these models can be regarded as dismal failures.

  2. Interesting. New sensor, internal 4K. Really promising.
New low resolution sensor, I imagine. 12 or 16 MP?

  3. I really hope that this has some degree of truth here. Most anticipated rumor… Also I hope that new 85mm ZA is not only SSM update, but not as soft full open as previous Planar version.

        1. Same is true to the Nikkor 85mm/1.4, the Summilux-R 85mm/1.4 (which I have owned both). I used the Canon FD version of the 85mm/1.2L as a loaner from a friend, also far from perfect wide open.

All three lenses are sharp and produce magnificant results, but they are all a little soft wide open.

          1. I’m not saying any slight softness is a problem, but there are other issues, such as LoCAs wide open. It is an inherent problem with large aperture primes, but an optical redesign could improve such issues.

          2. Indeed, all mentioned lenses, including the Planar, are quite a bit dated.

      1. Sorry to say, but the optical construction of this particular Planar is old. Compared to 135mm ZA Sonnar and even to new Sigma 50mm art, I just purchased, the difference is way too visible full open.

      2. Me2. The 85ZA was my favorite lens on both the A900 and the A99.
Admitteldy it is not perfect wide open from sharpness perception point of view, but that was more close to the borders and corners. I had only a few cases where it caused trouble, because most times my compositions with this lens were not in need of sharp borders/corners.
What bothered me more was the (in my opinion) quite pronounced bokeh fringing.

    1. The only issue I have here with regards to truth is that this reads like a wishlist you often see posted here.

        1. Haha, well yes, but there are rumours that are obviously spread by jokers and rumours from well connected sources. We don’t really know which this is.

          1. But as far as I understand, a source has to gain some credibility over the time in order to get a SR3 rating, otherwise it would be SR5. Right?

          2. Maybe, although I don’t think a single trusted source would get an SR5 rating on his own. Admin would wait for more sources to confirm before giving SR5.

          3. Sorry I meant SR1 instead of SR5. (Otherwise my post wouldn’t make any sense.)

            Sorry.

  4. I’m afraid that the upcoming A-mount 24-105 f4 means we don’t get an E-mount version? Although they aren’t mutually exclusive, current lens line-ups indicate very little overlap…
Still, very good news for the A-mount users and interesting to see new lenses too!

And if it is going to record 4K, just give it the A7s sensor…

    1. What is wrong with using A mount lenses on E mount?

I know Af assist is not really working, I know we have few less AF zones but these are not things to die over.

      1. There’s nothing wrong with using A-mount lenses on E-mount bodies but I simply prefer to use native E-mount lenses. The LA-EA4 adapter is useful but clunky. I prefer to use A-mount lenses on A-mount bodies, and only use A-mount lenses on E-mount cameras if 1) there is no E-mount alternative 2)A-mount lenses are much cheaper.

  5. I have been waiting on this for over a year now and it continually gets put back. Every so often a rumor comes out about the A99ii that gives us fresh hope and then when that time arrives it doesn’t come. I hope it is true this time and it is something really special that blows the competition out of the water.

  6. Admin, what about AF module? Will they use the a77M2 module? a new one? or a mixed PDAF+Assist Points?

Also, is it coming with 24Mpx or is Sony planning to release a 12Mpx version ala a7S? If they release a 12Mpx version, hopefully we will finally get our 1DX/D4S competitor with at least 10fps and a decent AF module and good buffer for sports photography.

    1. You can be almost sure it will use either the current 36 MPx or a new 50+ MPx.

For Sony to make a pro body similar to high-end C&N ones is almost impossible. They would have to release 2 expensive FF bodies in a system they can hardly sell.

What you should expect is something analogous to A77II. They will put the best AF they have, the best sensor they have (possibly the 36 MPx one) and so on. So A99II should be the ultimate Sony FF body – just like A77II is the ultimate APS-C SLT.

I doubt they will go for 50+ MPx in the A-mount. They want their users to move to E-mount. So the new sensor will most likely appear only in the planned E-mount body (e.g. a7RII).

      1. “… They want their users to move to E-mount. …”

Disagreed 100% on this one. Sony wants you to move your a*s in the local camera store, pull your credit card out and buy as much Sony gear as possible. They don’t care which platform turns out to be successful. If it is (E-mount) then they will push it, if it is not (A-mount) they will abandon it. Quite simple.

        1. +1

I hope more serious photographers buy this new A99II. I have my spare bedroom full of great A-mount lenses. I have no intention of ever getting serious about E-mount. I have one E-mount camera just so I can play with my old legacy lenses. I got that out of my system. I’ll happily continue to use my vast collection of A-mount lenses. I have a few SSM lenses; they are quiet but no big deal. Old Minolta screw driven lenses work very well for me on my Sony A-Mount camera’s, and remain some of my favorites.

        2. That’s your opinion and starting another flame is not in my interest. You can believe in whatever you want. 🙂
Mirrorless are easier to manufacture, easier to sell, provide higher profit margin.
Sony tried to succeed in the SLR/SLT market for almost a decade and they couldn’t even beat Pentax to the 3rd place. Their market share has shrunk even more lately.
But in the mirrorless segment they have a safe 2nd place behind Olympus, who wins only because of the price difference.

Moreover, SLT wasn’t profitable. They were loosing money for years. They kept it going, because it was important for their business plan to have a camera division (e.g. to support sensor sales).
Profitability of E-mount is still a mystery, but we know that Sony camera division results surged in 2014.

So rethink this once again and tell me: why should Sony keep the A-mount going? 🙂

      2. If you recall, the A99 used an updated A77 AF module. The A77II AF module has a larger coverage area than the A77’s.

If you overlay the two AF modules and then use that to scale what it would look like in a full frame, the A77II’s coverage would be around the same as that found in the D810 and 5D MkIII.

So to say the A77II’s AF module would have a very small frame coverage would be saying the same thing about the Canon and Nikon’s top cameras.

      3. So you’re telling me that the company that makes the impossible, possible, wouldn’t make 3 bodies ala a7 series with 12, 24 and 36Mpx just because they can’t hardly sell? Way to go.

One of the reasons Sony will never be top player is because of the reasons you gave me. Why not give the users every single option available? Nikon shares their AF module across several models including the D4S, D810 and D7200 and they’re selling just fine.

If Sony keep with that mentality of not doing stuff because they won’t sell instead of risking a little bit more for the sake of their existing customers, they won’t succeed. After all, Sony is relying heavily on mouth to mouth marketing from customers.

        1. “Company that makes the impossible, possible” – huge lol. 😀

          Marketing brainwashing at its best.

Sony makes three a7 variants because they cover 3 demand niches:
          1) a7 is the mainstream, cheapest variant
          2) a7R is the high-res, more expensive body
          3) a7S is purpose-built for cinematography

As we already have the a7S, a similar SLT body would not sell, because cinematographers will buy the mirrorless option (mostly for its flange distance).

Sony might go for a sport-oriented SLT FF body, but that would have to be a new design similar to Canon and Nikon pro models, not an a99 variant.
And would it be a hit? Not likely.
A77II shines in its segment because of decent AF and burst speed (true 8fps and limited 12 fps).
Sony currently has nothing in its arsenal, that would make the “sporty” a99 more attractive than C&N pro models. AF is not good enough for this segment and I doubt they will be able to push proper ~15 fps – something both C&N are expected to offer in 2016.

  7. I hope this new A99 successor will inherit the built-in GPS, it has been one heck of a great travel camera for the last couple of years

        1. Tell me about it. I’ve been dreaming of having a light kit. Good news for me about the a99 successor is at least there will be a market for my A-mount glass when I do make the switch.

      1. That’s right! After seeing your portfolio, I’d definitely love to find out where you shoot some of your amazing works! 😉

      1. I used the RX100 III. While the pop up EVF is nice, the thought of it appears to emphasise “add-on” utility rather than “utility-utility”.

It felt fragile, to me and, as I wear glasses, I can’t get close enough to it. The NEX 7 (later 6 and 6000) EVF solution and placement were superb. I’d love a NEX-7 like RX1, but it looks like the cybershot design lies elsewhere.

Built-in, ala NEX 7 (pioneer in this) and now LX100 and Leica Q can bring a nice unified look and utility to an already superb camera which, I might add, can till remain at the top of the IQ chain even with this LQ coming up.

Also, it looks like the dial on the LQ is straight up borrowed from the LX100, except it doesn’t go to 4000. It looks like it’s a Panasonic work, with Leica casing and the same sensor of the M-240 (which is nowhere near as great as the now older RX1 sensor)

  8. it will have 4K recording (YEY) but most likely you will have to pay an extra 4-500 euros for the firmware to enable that 4k like Sony just did with some of their Pro video cameras like PXW X70… Shame Sony, shame

      1. Welcome to the real world where every one can have an opinion no matter if Freddo (or Sony) likes it or not; get a life, go fishing and most important ignore the forum posts that you don’t like and give me a break, would you?

    1. Just to help you out: Sony NEVER asked $0,01 for a FW update on their consumer cameras NEVER! So there is hope! And on the other hand, this is still a rumor, so I would wait until Sony realy shows what is up their sleeves before shaming Sony….

  9. At last, a rumor I’m really interested in! I hope it’s true. The last SAR rumor that affected what I bought was the eminent release of the A77II. I pre-ordered and was one of the first to get one. I love that camera. I’ll be watching SAR for more details.

A built in GPS would be nice but not a must for me. Things I’m looking for will be an EVF, more pixel resolution, less noise at higher ISO. My A900 still works very well. The A99II must offer me a clear advantage over my current cameras.

  10. My unapologetic and unsolicited short wish list (there is always more):

    1) Larger die size. Just is that a larger photoreceptor size is better. 36mpix on up resolution warrants less firmware boost and more physical apparatus boost (which should make the normal easily achieve higher/better standards in normal modes, with increased extended).
    2) Body size can get a bit bigger, giving more room for more programmable function buttons. I’d even be happy with a body similar to the Pentax 645Z (which for me is a pleasure to hold).
    3) A five or seven inch monitor attachment point and dedicated live-view out. Another HDMI out for recording.

    4) Pick a already non-price-inflated commercial standard or two and have built in radio trigger functionality.
    5) Open all to all that want to build apps. In essence the app builders will increase the value of the camera system, but will also teach Sony engineers and management a thing of two that will keep a top-of-the-line pro camera moving forward by being more functional over the years (for not everyone buys the latest and greatest body each time one comes out).
    6) A similar sensor-shift tech to the one by Pentax… or go Foveon-like and skip the sensor shifting.

    1. “… a body similar to the Pentax 645Z …”

I would buy the Pentax 645Z in this case. No joke, I mean this in all seriousness. Why would you want a future product A just like an existing product B? Just buy B.

      1. Pentax 645Z is $8,000 and you’ll need medium format lenses
Sony A99II will prob be under $2000 and A mount users already have the lenses

        1. The short version: Take one of your lenses, remove the caps, and take note that with your naked eye you can get focus in different location other than where the sensor may be in the camera. A-mount lenses can be adapted.

      2. Because future product A is not an existing product B? Because B is as it is, but A may be a tad bit better at the time I am willing to spend the 8 thousand or less?

  11. Does this mean the comment sections wont be filled with A mount users complaining sony is forgetting them on every post? Finally!

    1. But it will raise fear and anger among all E-mount fans, that this rumor could mean the dead of E-mount.

So, too much A-mount news well lead to the same bullsh*t posts. Just the other way around. ;P

  12. Internal 4K recording with no line skipping would be very very nice and make it a competitive product.

  13. Just wondering is there going to be any uprgrades regarding light loss because of the semi transparent mirror…..i would really like cleaner iso6400, iso3200 like….. a full stop wiuld be enough for me (even tho we would still be behind canicon)…..
I shot recently with 7d m2 and 70d and they both have better iso then my a99 which is sad and hilarious at the same time 😉

  14. This makes so much sense that it is suspicious. The only thing that gives me hope is that the rumor seems to indicate that the 24-105 is not SSM, which is not beyond Sony. The “II” upgrades for the 85 and 135 are both welcomed and overdue but it would interesting to seem them update primes as well.

    1. I don’t think the fact SSM isn’t mentioned for the 24-105mm means anything. I’d actually be surprised if it didn’t have SSM.

SSM is mentioned specifically for the primes as it is the most requested upgrade for MkII versions.

    1. “Good Moring Dave”..Hal 2010
I gave up waiting for the Sigma 150-600s so I bought the tamron for A mount.
This will go nicely on this camera..I am of coarse hoping this will be a high res camera.
It will also arrive to late for this season.
I preordered the 90mm f2.8 macro for FE mount…I am hoping that will arrive in tim. a shoot I will do this summer, and hoping a high res camera E mount camera will arrive to go with it.
Otherwise I have plenty of time to cancel the lens and not get an E mount camera.
The tests on this lens are phenominal and it is worth having.
My other A mount macros could go on either the A or E mount high res cameras
The Tamron is good at 600mm f8 but not good at 600mm f6.3, so of course using this lens with a teleconverter is highly problematic.
At shorter focal lengths the lens is good even wide open.
Once I upgrade what is upgradable I think the new 90mm and the Tamron will be my main lense and each usually remain on the camera.
If Sony makes a high res E mount with IBIS in time for my shoot I can use that with an adapter until a high res A mount comes along.
Bear in mind ocourse. that this rumor..as like so many recently..may not be true.
P.S. I have not yet painted a hummingbird and have several projects before I can consider doing one.

  15. I’m thankful that they are spending the extra time needed to give us something better to work with than the current and badly outdated A99

  16. No no no please no. Sony is more out of touch with Amount users than I ever imagined.

4K means this a9x will be video centric… And probably 2nd rate in the stills department…

No no no… Emount is for video… taking video world by storm… making videographers cream…

Emount can take all lenses a videographer ever dreamed of.

A-MOUNT IS FOR STILLS PURISTS!!! Stop ruining it like killing a flash system for a microphone. Sony please make a premium STILLS centric camera for you Amounters. Heavy MP with silent operation… great AF coverage accuracy… excellent vertical ergonomics for portrait fashion togs… a flash system that strobist can actually use…

There was a SAR rumor while back claiming Sony intended making more STILLS centric camera? Like the new Canon 50mp… which misses out on many video benefits.

Most original Minolta/Sony a900/700 users were the last to be concerned with ANY video at all. Most care less about video than even medium format users do. Sony playing to a VERY SMALL MARKET to any Amount user who thinks he needs 4K video… USE THE FREAKING Emount for that… STOP RUINING MY A-MOUNT FOR THE SAKE OF VIDEO THAT VERY FEW CARE ABOUT FOR THIS SYSTEM.

  17. A 36Mpx, 4k capable camera that can shoot 10FPS coupled with decent buffer & updated a77II AF module will give Canikon a good run for money and will completely destroy the upcoming Pentax FF.

    1. This looks like a good camera on paper and hopefully a similar spec and sensor can make it to a Nikon D820.

    2. Not sure, it might be the same sensor Pentax is waiting for. If it is, you’ll have the same 4k in the Pentax + a new AF module.

        1. Ofc but it’s a good starting point. And it will be sad to produce a camera with a 4k-able sensor, a good processor and no 4k video end of 2015, even if Pentax had low interest in video in the past.

    3. I certainly don’t want Sony to make that mistake again.

The a99 inherited the AF module from the a77, I do not want the a99ii to inherit another APS-C AF module where you can’t even focus on the 3rds.

The a900 was better in that regard and had the ultra-sensitive double cross f2.8 sensor in the centre that was annoyingly dropped from the a99 so it actually became worse at focussing in low light!

  18. I do not like the transparent mirror. I do not ask to return to the heavy glas mirror, but with a tiny piece like the transparent one, it must be possible to put in there a flip-up mechanism to get it out of the way when you press the button. To my opinion they should reduce pixels and get it more sensitive. Half way between the 12 and the 24 ist 18, and that would still be a huge resolution for a Sports shooter or a Ppro.

    1. Have you actually shot with one? There isn’t any visible loss in image quality until you get to extreme high ISOs.

        1. I’ll take that 1/3 a stop in favor of full time continuous AF, thanks! So many other things to consider when shooting. 1/3 a stop light loss is negligible. It’s why I shoot with SLT by choice rather than DSLRs or mirrorless cameras.

          1. Yes I know – obvious better than you^^
            A third stop = 25% light.
It’s like multiplying every lenses f-stop number with 1,12.

          2. No, it’s not 25% of light entering the camera. It’s 1/3 of ONE STOP. If you think ONE STOP of light is all the light entering your camera, go back to school.
1/3 of ONE STOP is about 2% of the TOTAL LIGHT entering the camera. That’s why any impact on IQ is negligible at best. In test after test Sony’s SLT cameras hold up very well against the current models of their time.
Has A99 fallen behind on high ISO? Sure, but that has nothing to do with SLT, but everything to do with it’s aging sensor tech. A lot developed in three years.
SLT cameras provide incredible image quality and currently the ONLY truly full-time continuous AF system and I’m glad Sony dumped DSLR in favor of SLT!

          3. 1 stop light = double amount of light (100% win or 50% loss).
            right?

So: 1 stop more = amount of light * 2

            1/3 stop = amount of light * 1.25
            Check: 1.25 * 1.25 * 1.25 = 2
            (3 * 1/3 stop == 1 stop)

Talking about light-loss, you have to divide through 1.25
            (or multiply with 0.8)
            => 1/3 stop is either
            25% light win or
            20% light loss

Math is so simple – isn’t it?
Please stop talking about sending me back to school and explain me how you calculated your 2% result.

        2. Sounds like someone who’s read there’s a third stop loss, but hasn’t actually shot with one to see if there’s much of a difference.

          1. You are right – I never shot with that.
I am just reading and I am good at math.
It’s like the 70-200mm discussion: go for f2.8 or is f4 enough? With the same argument you can tell the 2.8er-fans to shot f4.
(The third stop loss converts the 2.8 into a 3.15 – but you pay the price of a 2.8 and you carry the weight of a 2.8)

          2. You’re really good at trying to make things sound bad.

F2.8 is still F2.8 with the same shallow depth of field on Sony SLT cameras. The sensor is calibrated and optimized to work well with SLT, and all SLT cameras hold up against their current DSLR peers from other makers in terms of IQ and outpace them in terms of speed.

          3. I was not talking about depth of field. I was talking about the amount of light, hitting the sensor. And I wanted not to bring the term “t-stop” instead of “f-stop”, because I assume you don’t know what a t-stop is, as long you believe a third stop is 1-2% of light.

Losing a thrid f-stop of light is like having a sensor tech about 3-4 years older. Nothing more and nothing less.
Of course 4 years ago there have been already fantastic cameras out there, but the newer ones are even better. Same with a SLT-free cameras that capture 25% more light with the same sensor.

If you insist that SLT has many advantages in terms of AF-speed, especially during viedo-mode: yes – true!
If you say AF-advantage is more important than that little light loss: yes – true!

          4. 3-4 years older? I can tell you’ve never shot with SLT cameras. Write something when you can speak from experience.

          5. I don’t need to shot SLT to get experience because I can do math.
That’s the advantage of having a brain.

(Sorry – but that must be spoken out)

          6. If your math were correct, images would be nothing but blackness if underexposed at -1 EV.

Now we all know that isn’t the case at all!

I’ll gladly continue working with my SLT cameras, while you enjoy looking at numbers on a screen.

          7. How do you come to that conclusion?
My math tells that 1EV is doubling the light, so -1EV halves the light.
            +1EV = +100% light
            -1EV = -50% light

Are you DW? Sounds like the same math-genious?

BTW: have fun with your SLT. It is a very good camera and the loss of light is not really an issue for every-days shooting.

          8. Wikipedia site explains with logarithms.

It’s too complicated for you if you even don’t understand the difference between adding to 100% or substracting from 100%.

  19. Sony, if you’re reading this, I don’t think most A-mount users care about video features. We want amazing speed, super fast/accurate AF and clean ISO.

    1. None of those things have to be compromised by the existence or addition of video features.

      1. I didn’t say they have to be, but I am saying a video-emphasized A-mount product is a mistake. That makes more sense in E-mount where one can adapt PL-mount Cine lenses, etc. A-mount should be still-photography emphasized over video. I’ll take the 4K video, but not at the expense of anything listed above.

        1. I care about video, but I care more about full sensor readout than 4k. Some might not have a use for 4k, but 4k that’s soft is really useless. I also dream of a global shutter. Both of these advances could be helpful to the photo capabilities of the camera. Just imagine if there was a big 4k EVF with a fast refresh rate in the camera how much easier focusing would be. Yeah, 12 million dots, and make it HDR while you’re at it, or at least full Adobe rgb calibrated.

          1. Nobody is arguing with you, but if for video-dominant users, A-mount does not make sense because it’s lens mount is more restrictive whereas E-mount can adapt to Cine lenses easily.

      1. That’s too great a loss in resolution for professionals. I say stay at 24 MP, double the ISO range again while increasing dynamic range, radically improve the buffer and CPU to allow 10 FPS / 12 FPS burst, with a new version of 4D AF using PDAF + OSPDAF (AF-D v2.0) and we’re good!

    2. Internal 4K recording, depending on how well it is executed could be a game changer. The fact that Sony is staking so much of its future on 4K is one of the things that led me to believe that an a99 replacement with 4K capability was in our future. I like incorporating some video in what I do. I may only be a voice of one, but i do care about video capability. I suppose if Sony had a more differentiated line of cameras it could produce a camera optimized for photography with only still shooting capability. But to keep up with, and perhaps surpass the “Joneses” (i.e., Canon & Nikon) in buzz factor, the camera almost has to have revolutionary video capability. I am wondering also about 50mp resolution and 5 axis IBIS.

          1. Not necessarily. If Sony only delivers a slow, high res body with 4K video, I’ll dump the entire system.

    3. How will 4k capture affect speed AF and ISO? If Sony implements internal 4K they will have to put in a much bigger buffer which will benefit still shooting.

  20. IF true — especially the 24-105, a “new” lens — this would be the best news for a-mount in a long time. Unfortunately, I have low confidence in SR3 rumors.
So I’ll believe it when I see it. But if true, especially the lens part, would give me much greater confidence in the system over the next 3-5 years.

    1. Absolutely true analysis .. 24-105 f4 new kit for FF A-mount means commitment to this category.

about that A-mount is dead rumor .. this is what I think

      1. I’ve been accused of spreading the a-mount is dead rumor — because I believe there is strong evidence that Sony is phasing out a-mount. I do not work for Canon.
And it simply makes no sense… Canon would have nothing to gain from a-mount death rumors. A-mount sales are too small to be a threat to Canon, and a-mount death rumors do nothing to stop the growth of mirrorless. You really think Canon would go through corporate espionage of spreading a-mount death rumors, just to rile up a few a-mount users, to get them to make a few complaints to Sony’s complaint department?

A-mount will live and die based on its profitability and Sony strategy. Canon has much bigger things to worry about than spreading a-mount rumors.

      2. You say a seller in your country. You sell camera products? Well, are people buying A mount still?

        1. Not at all , it would be a surprise to see someone buying A99 or A77II .. But there are few people buying A-mount lenses to use it with A7R and LA-EA4 adapter.

That A7R is really a super seller

      1. The 24-105 rumors have been around for 2 years without materializing. So hopefully true, but I become less optimistic the longer we hear the rumor without actually seeing the lens.

    1. With a handle like “Virus X” and the accuracy of you predictions, im beginning to suspect you were the one that hacked into Sony not too long ago… I just want to let you know the Feds are watching…they always are… You may want to chill… 🙂

      1. Oh .. I don’t think that any hacker would be interested in bird photography 😉

Hackers usually stay at home infront of their PC

  21. “Advanced Version…”—-giggity
    “4k”…..giggity
    “24-105″….giggity
    “85 SSM”…AAAALRIGHT!!!!!

  22. For Video, phase detection on A Mount is much better that E mount. I’m sure faster AF etc will come, to have the additional video features is great, its a no brainer rather than carry around a video camera. My SLT 57 Amount, is does great video at 1080p 50 up to 28mb/s great!

  23. This flies in the face of everything Animalsbybarry has been preaching to us on a daily basis, how could this possibly be true? “New A mount cameras will be not be made.”

    1. You have no clue what you are talking about. He CLEARLY stated that his info is to be taken in the long term. And after 100 years no new A mount cameras will be made.

So after 100 years you will see his statement was absolutely true. 🙂

      1. LOL, that’s basically how he works, yes. I think he truly believes he is the Nostradamus of the camera industry.

    2. Well, to play devil’s advocate, I wouldn’t get too excited by him getting “proven” wrong by a SR3 rumor either…

  24. This isn’t good. I’m in overload right now. I want to many cameras and I already have to many. GH7, A99II, X100T, EM5II, A7SII….

Someone should create a yearly subscription for camera bodies. You pay a few hundred dollars and can switch out bodies all year long as you please. Heck, I’d pay 200 a month for that.

    1. Did you notice which lens is coming out with it? I just received my f1,4/35 and it by no means is smaller than anything I have/had for my A-mount.

      1. Yes indeed. I’m not a big 85 guy but if they revise the 135 I”ll buy it. It might be overkill, but for the price..SSMII would be nice in these updates. It’s supposedly 4 times faster than SSM. You’re already going in there, so why not?

        1. Hmmm, I wonder if this new 35 I received has this SSMII, but either way I’m keeping my hands on both oars.

        2. I’m just the opposite. I LOVE my 135, but find myself grabbing the 85 much more often; just seems more practical in most situations to me. Of course, it all depends on what/how you shoot…

    2. It’s called Amazon Prime.

(I’m not advocating that sort of thing, but it’s clear that’s how some folks use the 30-day return window.)

  25. True, this SR3 — sounds like don’t go away, over to Nican yet, instead buy some more lens…. We need clearer commitment from Sony than another foggy SR3

    1. Sorry, but as long there is any SR infront of the message it is not comming from Sony, it is a RUMOR! Even SR5 can be false. This is NOT comming from Sony, it is not Sony telling anything, it is the informant who is telling this.

  26. The irony that I just recently conceded to the E after a fairly long history with my 900 and here comes the successor to the 99. Actually, it doesn’t surprise me in the least and I always believed it was coming.

    1. Ha ha me too !!! Got fed up of waiting for an A99 successor and gave up and got an A7 and A7 II instead. And NOW Sony decides to launch a new A99 successor. 🙁

      1. A99 have a 3 years update cycle.
So it is most possibility will be available in Sep. 2015.
Before that I will not move to E-mount.
I would rather stay at my A77II, which is one the best APSC in the market.

      2. Yep, did the same but I did sell my ZA 135 awhile back and my ZA 24 just this week! I’m down to my ZA 50 on my A900 and I’m okay with that. I do suspect this new A99II may well be very expensive so I remain more interested in glass than bodies.

      3. Based on precedent, an a99 successor has been expected to be announced in the Fall of this year.

        1. Its not just the A99. There have been no real lenses (And no two old lenses with improved coatings and highly improved price don’t count) or anything much happening with A mount to give any sort of confidence to spend more money into a dead system. It seems E mount is the future for Sony and A mount users be damned. Sure the A99 II might come but I am done with the mount. Sony has let too much negativity be formed for A mount users and I am not going to buy any more A mount lenses or gear.

    2. I made the jump out of A mount long ago and into Full Frame E more recently as A7 came out. I would not mind buying A mount body if it is indeed a good mix of features vs price. Which A99 was not.

Anyway this move back and forth reduced my lens arsenal to essentials of much higher quality than I used to have. I used to have many mid class lenses and now I own few nice ones – 1,8/135 and 2,8/100 seems quite good also the 70-400 is not so bad.

  27. This is welcome news but too late for this season.
What do we know about resolution for both the new A and E mount cameras, and will anything be out in time to give the 50mp Canon some competition

    1. For what Season? It will be intime for christmas season (World wide the same season) or it will be intime for the summor season on the southern hemisphere, and it is in time for the winter season on the northern hemisphere…
      So in time it is!

  28. its good news if true, wonder if they followed my suggestion and are just rebadging the sigma 24 105
hopefully they have been bright enough to build it in mind of 3 sensors, just like a7 series

      1. sony would make a nice cut if they did rebrand the sigma, for the user the sigma would be better as it can use that dock thingy and be cheaper

    1. the only benefit for a sony lens would be in camera correction without additional app… but who cares about in camera correction…?

  29. Maybe this will help them move that G series 70-300mm SSMII. 1200 bucks! Nano coatings, etc…I hear it outperforms the 70-400 wide open at all focal lengths. They just came out with that! Sony, give us a reason to lay down the big wads of cash on those lenses.

    1. Really? So there goes the ‘theory’ that these are overpriced insubstantial updates that usually get bandied around. Seems every time Sony don’t do some massive sweeping change ‘new thing’ they get crucified for it as not doing enough. They have updated every one of their most important zooms in the last couple years, sounds like they are now adding to the line and updating the primes.

    1. It is not going to be a 12MP and 48MP. they will not make that big a change, it will be 36MP tops for sure, if we are lucky but more like a new 24MP. Si

  30. So for the A-Mount is dead folks, IF this comes true can we can the A-Mount is dead talk for a while? Pretty please?

    1. They have been saying it for 9 years now. Its not based on facts or reasoning its emotion and envy of other systems..So no.. 90 days after release when there is a New Canon or Nikon or Pentax with flashing lights and phone charge built in they will start again.

    2. A-Mount is dead not because Sony doesn’t make them anymore.
It’s because nobody cares for it anymore.
Making this camera is not going to bring people back to A-Mount.

  31. It wasn’t more than a week ago that I was debating between the A-mount f2,8 70-200 and the E-mount f1,4 35 and opted for the latter. Now I’m halfway tempted to switch back as the 35 just arrived yesterday. Oh well, I’ll more than likely end up with both but dang!

    1. I hope the rumor is true. But I certainly wouldn’t let a sr3 rumor like this really affect current decision making.

      1. I’ve been shooting for 45-years and knew that. I was simply wallering in my own self-pity…fixed income and all. Yes I’m kidding and frankly, I’m excited that Sony is getting closer to a pro-level contender.

  32. Both Canon and Nikon make excellent..but heavy and exensive..600 and 800mm primes.
Sigma and Tamron make affordable 150-600mm zooms that are lightwieght, reasonably good quality and are selling very well.
Only the Tamron is available for Sony..not as good as the Sigma Sport, and not really useable with a TC.
What is needed to put Sony on the map for wildlife is something in between.
The lens I am pushing for would be
300-600 mm with fastest f stop of f5.6 or 4.8, and sell somewhere in the low to mid $3000 range.
Alternatively 300-800 with fastest aperture of f6.3.for a similar or slightly higher price.
These should be optimized fpr maximum sharpness at the longest focal length and widest aperture…because that is what people will buy the lens for.
Another highly usefull feature would be a built in extra barrel extension for use as a close focus mode, but not used for normal mode.
A special slot could be available to accomodate not only drop in filters but also drop in teleconverters…which can be located at the optimum location in the optical path…that can be combined with a click stop on the barrel extension for use with the teleconverters.
These can be sold seperately or included as a kit.
The focusing motor should be compatable with either A or E mount so a simple E mount converter could be used rather than one with a mirror.
Lightwieght materials should be used such as thermally stabilized abs plastic, and the lens should be black, not white.
I believe a lense like this would sell well, and more importantly it would add greatly to the image of this being a complete versatile system.
Lastly..the built in barrel extension could be used to vary the flange distance making adaption to E mount or even non Sony mounts easy.
This would be a great addition to the Sony line and a sure success for Sony.

      1. If and only if the performance is good wide open. If I have to stop down then FORGET ABOUT IT. To many competitive options now.

      2. There are many 400mms around but too short for hardcore wildlife photography.
Sony needs a really long lens in thier line up…will every single photographer buy one..no,
But everyone will know there is a long lens available if they need it.
As I said..an in between supertele is needed.
Canon and Nikon have such large pro userbase that they can support the super expensive big primes…Sony needs a more modest supertele to apeal to more people.
The modest zoom capability will also appeal to allow more than a single use for the lens.

      1. Not according to the autocorrect on my cellphone…so I guess you will just have to settle for being slow to focus because you are not fully compatable.
If I try to spell it your way my phone always changes it back, so you can continue to tell me but it will change nothing…

  33. I see from that photo Sony is bringing back the iISO hot shoe. Best news ever. I’ve stripped the threads on three MIS adapters now. Such a pain to use and keep track of those caps. Fragile pins make me wince and curse Sony. Really miss my snap and go iISO hot shoe. So many native 3rd party smart solutions still available. Sony really killed us with that one. All for an expensive microphone that needed a side clamp. WHERE IS THE PROMISE OF MIS hot shoe? Why don’t all MIS accessories work on all MIS enabled cameras? Sad sick Sony joke on loyal Amount users. Meanwhile CaNikon develops most sophisticated strobist solutions ever in history.

But oh boy… I get a MIS microphone to replace my flash system. Oh boy thanks Sony.

  34. Yawn. I hope its not the case, but another refresh like the A77 seems more likely. Sony’s cash cow is the FF E-mount and that’s clearly its focus.

If it still uses the same AF module as the A77 it will fail. FF cameras need wider AF coverage, not a bunch of points clustered in the center of the frame. It will need 5-axis as well, as the Steadyshot in the current A99 pales by comparison.

4k internal won’t matter either if Sony can’t do a full sensor readout. The A99 video was a mushy, aliasing and moire filled mess. 4k will make that worse. BionzX needs to be replaced with something more powerful – like what Samsung has in the NX1, 6.5k full sensor readout and more processor intensive H265 encoding, all without overheating.

    I want to believe…

    1. Clearly you haven’t actually used the A77m2. It was a solid new camera.. Not just a “refresh” or a YAWN.. Lets say Sony put a 36 MP sensor in it. Added in the A77m2 AF module which is large like it was designed for FF so has better coverage than the D750 and 5 Axis IBIS.. Plus 4K.. That is a nice camera and it is all tech we know Sony can do.

      1. Problem is – Sony doesn’t have a great history of putting all the great tech in any single camera. I bought into the A-mount with the A99 because the stills were so good, but the video was so bad I exited after a few weeks. It would be a first if everything you outline was dumped into the A99II.

No interest in crop bodies and the extra noise on top of what you lose with the silly SLT, so no I haven’t shot with the A77.

        1. SLT allows for the only cameras in the world with full time continuous AF with simultaneous full time live view — not sure I’d call that silly!

          1. Wrong. Canons dual-pixel AF does it with no light loss or increase in noise – both of which plague SLT.

          2. Actually, you are incorrect. Canon’s system looses light every time the shutter curtain closes — same problem with all OSPDAF.

Sony’s SLT provides the only true continuous full-time AF because the traditional PDAF sensor’s light path is never interrupted.

        2. No camera ever really gets “all the great tech” in it– partly because technology advances so fast, partly because 1 company rarely has “all the best tech” to itself, and also because companies make money by stratifying features and benefits up and down (or across) product lines. Just look at the a7, a7R and a7S. Each one is different for a reason, and not a single a7 camera could have “all the best tech” in it.

Calling SLT technology “silly” suggests, well, never mind. I didn’t buy the a99 because of its poor video quality, but given how Sony has implemented video recently both in its codecs and in sensor readout improvements (APS-C and FF), I don’t think we’ll be seeing the same mushy video in the a99II.

    2. Chris I am afraid to see how little you are capable of with an older camera like a Sony A900 or canon rebel… must be tough without 5 axis stabilization or full sensor readout. Amazing how you are suddenly entitled to a feature that was just introduced to the sony lineup and how your work just can’t live without it! Start shooting more and complaining less maybe? I’m more excited about the current A99 pricing going down as a result of this, it is more camera than many photographers need already… http://www.frankwithersphoto.com

  35. “If Sony wants A99II to shine”.
People got used to AF coverage of APS-C DSLRs and mirrorless.
If Sony wants to make the ultimate full frame SLT, taking the AF module from A77II is not the answer.

  36. Come on Sony, just give up with the new A-mount gear. Bring out an FE-mount A9 and some more FE lenses.

  37. I hope this body doesn’t just end up being designed as the core engine of a video setup.

  38. I’d love to see just how small an A mount camera could be made- FF. Looking here though, it doesn’t look too too promising. Although, the D750 is fairly small- if Nikon can do it…..

P.S.- These don’t look all that cheap to make either.

    1. Probably A33 size is the smallest it can be made, if AF module is small enough, like the one in EA4. Larger AF module would require a larger hump at the top. Or alternatively drop the flash, and you’ve got more room to play with.

      1. Well, oddly- I don’t want the size to change all that much. Everything on the right side should stay the same ergonomically. Maybe make the grip more recessed in the front. If anything, shave the top deck down a bit and a little off the other side. You could make the flip screen sit more flush with the rest camera as well. I do wish they’d go back to putting some buttons along the left side of the camera. I actually liked the power button their on the A900. Keep my left hand in on the action.

        1. Me neither. it was a rhetorical question, followed by a rhetorical answer. You know, one of those “what if”.
In my opinion A99 should never be smaller than the current A77. In fact the size today is just perfect in my opinion. More buttons on the left side is a good idea though.

        2. Yes, customizable buttons on the left side of the back, as well as on the left. Let the photographer decide how to use them; all Sony has to do is give them to the photographer to figure out how to implement for themselves.

And make every single and all functions and apps controllable via some form of tethering, be it thunderbolt, USB3, network cable, or WIFI.

      2. Kill the grip side, just think of a square like a Hasselblad and you have a FF that would look like a Hassy but with the 90* angle finder.

    2. Don’t expect D750 size… the addition of in camera 4K will require more processing and generate more heat, neither of those is conducive to smaller size.

      1. Then so be it. Just make sure you don’t forget to pack enough “kick asss” in there.

      2. With every new generation, computers get faster AND smaller AND generate less heat AND consume less power. Why should that be different in camera electronics?

        1. Because camera manufacturers don’t put the newest processors, or codecs in cameras. I’m fairly certain that if there were a way to compare the Bionz-x to current phone video processors, it would look huge, inefficient, and under powered.

        2. If I recall correctly, my first computer system used around 25 watts + whatever the CRT display used. My next computer has a whopping 125 watt power supply. My latest build uses about 350 watts of a 500 watt power supply, and this is not a gaming machine. My upcoming build (for productivity will have to have a 1000 watt power supply, I expecting to use at least 750 watts of it. Add to that the NAS and the air conditioning to keep the computer and me closer to sanely cool.

Not sure what you are claiming for the reality of what I know. I’d rather have the processing power even if it is in a larger body, just like I use larger computer cases to allow better cooling of all the “faster AND smaller” electronics within a computer build or a camera build.

          1. This is only true if you chose rather mainstream or higher end CPU(GPU. Take a cell phone or tablets for example. Every generation runs longer on a smaller battery with at least the same processing power….

          2. I would be not to dare to compare a cell phones processors to the ones in a productivity aligned desktop; there is nowhere close to similar processing powers between the two. I however do concede that between the processors at that lower level, there have been seemingly some increase of processing ability.

          3. I fully agree that a cell phone CPU can’t compete in any way with a current productivity system on i5/i7 or Xeon level. But a camera processor is more like a cell phone processor, from it’s layout and architecture, power consumption and so on…

          4. Even most gaming machines only use a small fraction of what their PSUs are rated for.

          5. Yes, there is not standard; the differences are great. But if I am using 8 cores and two graphic cards for two or four displays and 64 gigs of ddr3 and an SSD and a HD and et cetera, then the power usage can be quite substantial.

        3. True… but my Sony Nex gets hot right now only doing HD… 4K is going to be about 4 times as much data to process and I don’t see computers in cameras magically getting 4 times as efficient this quick… Besides I would rather have a bigger camera that can shoot as long as the battery hold instead of one that overheats and shuts down.

          1. What’s your point? A comparison of a product 6 generations ago has nothing to do with something that is going to be only one generation from the other, your iphone 5 was capable of 20,500 MIPS, a iphone 6 is capable of 25,000 MIPS so really it is only an increase of about 22% which is a long ways off from the increase you need to go from 1080p to 4K…. buy hey I’m sure the next camera will be a lot more powerful than an old Sony Alpha 200, but since that camera is a decade old who cares.

  39. Please don’t play with my emotions!! Ive had a tough week!!! This has to be real… haha

    1. Haha. I feel the same way. An A-mount FF release would sure make me feel better about the amount of money I’ve invested into the system.

  40. The a77ii af sensor is actually pretty well spread out, so in the new ff camera. It will be acceptable, a lot better than the a99.

  41. S-Log3 and global shutter and like 50 MBpixels photogrpahy you would change the game
Just like you did when the a7s came out ( the low light beast )

  42. I think my FF camera could be a A99 II because it ll allow to use more lenses than with E mount camera which count mainly on Zeiss to get HQ lenses …

    1. 1st: All lenses fitting to a a99/A-mount will fit to E-mount too…
2nd: What’s wrong with Zeiss? If you wanna go FF, you need HQ glass which is usually not cheap….
and.. what about Sony 28/2.0, Sony 90mm Macro, Sony 70-200/4? and also the Sony 28-70 isn’t that bad, resolution wise nearly as good as the Zeiss but much less expensive….
Just my opinion and thoughts to you comment…

      1. >All lenses fitting to a a99/A-mount will fit to E-mount too…

Through a stupid clumsy adapter with A33’s AF that defeats the purpose of buying a mirrorless body in the first place…

      2. The prob is there s no competition;)… That s why FE lenses are so few compared to A mount line and Canikon ones… We have to wait for Zeiss to release lenses;)… And about adapting A mount lenses to E mount camera, LOL!!! Did you ever used LA-EA4 adapter ? Because except for immobile subject, the AF is ridiculously slow and not iffecient compared to real recent a mount camera

        1. Yes, I do use the LA-EA4. quite often…. But I don’t do sports, I’m into landscapes, macros and architecture. But also catching a playing child is not kind of a problem (usually I use my Sigma 70-200/2.8 OSS HSM for that). So as long as you don’t do really fast sport (with kind of unpredictable tracks) photography, it is feasible…
But I agree, recent A mount cameras are way faster, the durrent AF speed with the adapter is more like the AF of my a850, which is no 5-6 years old.

  43. If they release a A99 mk II. Im hoping it will be mirrorless. And i really hoping they will release a compact 14 mm f.2,8.
    Then i would have the
    14 mm f.2,8.
    24 mm f.2,0
    50 mm f.1,4
    85 mm f.1,4
    70-200 f.2,8
    And the 24-105 f.4,0.

I really dont need anything else

  44. So either a straight forward update in last November, or a more advanced version in next September… Wait a minute, let me count, that is 10 months, almost a full year? My gosh, that update must really really be advanced.

  45. When it comes to the September, there will be rumour that the new A mount product will be delayed for various reasons ( for better version, change in A mount pathway…..)
All the A mount rumour can be neglected until real product is coming out.

    1. You may have read my post, but you obviously didn’t grasp it.

How can I ignore the FACT that no mention of STILLS functionality was found in this SR3 rumor… NONE… only more about the video features that killed my strobe system. Last I heard a99 was made 24mp because it handled video better than if they’d used the 36mp. That’s the excuse the Sony rep gave me.

How can I ignore the hot shoe that now requires an adapter just so I can get less function and less stability than I had with native iISO back in 1991? How can I ignore the false promises of MIS that NEVER manifested, or became unified throughout the lineup?

How can I ignore the FACT that Canon 50mp camera has achieved that mark, and openly admits less video functionality.

Can you honestly tell me that any CaNikon user is going to convert to Amount just because it has “4k”? Sony gonna get any RED or Black Magic converts?

Very little market for Amount video. Just like Pentax 645 and Leica S. Sure, offer it out of novelty. But concentrate on the best stills camera first.

  46. Hmmm… I wanted to wait, but september is far away (for deliveries in november/december?) and it’s still a rumour so it could be wrong (A99II should have been released last year at the same period!!).

    I’m tired of waiting… 🙁

    1. If you look at the life cycle for the Canon and Nikon flagships, Sony would be due for this fall not last year. The timing is correct so I think if that a-mount is not dead we will see it this year or a-mount is dead and it’s never coming.

  47. I really hope that really happens.

Last weekend at Arnold Classic Brasil,
    i shoot hundreds photos with

    A99 + 2470Z + HVL-F60

    A7II + LAE4 + 70200G F2.8

I bought the A7II few days ago because i was looking for a travel camera.
I was waiting for the A7RII.

I really like the A7II camera and works fine with some of
    my a-mount glas:

    1635Z, 2470Z, Minolta 28mm F2.8, 70-200G F2.8, 70300G,
    70400G and 16F2.8 Fisheye..

    Bad AF with:
    Sony 50mm F1.4 (Not Zeiss)
    Sony 85mm F2.8 (Not Zeiss)
    Minolta 28-85 F3.5-4.5
    Minolta 35-105 F3.5-4.5
    Minolta 70-210 F4

    1. Didn’t you get the SAR-Troll’s memo that A-mount is dead, and the A99 is a sorry-ass camera? Nobody uses the A99, so how can you be?

    2. The af of the adapter is quite good, I don’t get all the complaining, so I absolutely agree. One thing the adapter doesn’t have that the higher end A-Mounts do is the higher torque motor, so some screw drive lenses can be a bit slow, in lens motors are not affected by this and wides etc aren’t much of a problem in this regard.

Not sure what is going on with the 85mm SAM.

Of course I would like it if Sony released an improved adapter with more focus points.

      1. You forgot about the incompatibility with Sony Teleconverters, missing AF-D Range feature and the AF assist lamp inoperability with the adapters.

        1. Yeah yeah yeah, heard it all before. Mine works, have no issues and never missed a shot. Have used and owned most things and have no complaints, sorry that you can’t get passed these things.

          1. Right…so now you have af-d on your e-mount camera and your Sony tc works with LA-EA adapters. Liar.

  48. I’ve had the a99 from day one and use it half for portrait work (which it’s fine at) and half for video work because at the time Sony heavily advertised how revolutionarily wonderful it would be. It wasn’t. The much vaunted AF in video was abysmal and the video (even with an Atomos) was mushy in medium and long shots, mainly due to line skipping I imagine. The sensor in th a7s is great but the body is too small to handle the heat etc. and the AF is bad. If on the extremely off chance Sony comes out with an a99s (in addition to the a99 ii) with internal 4k, low pixel count, and advanced AF and stabilization, there would be a mass influx of Canon and Nikon and Panasonic customers. Until we found out Sony came up with yet another way to cripple it so as not to hurt sales of the next camera up the chain.

That said, Sony ought to surprise us and do it anyway.

    1. If they build a 12mpix A99IIs, a 24mpix A99II and a 36+(dare I think 50+)mpix A99IIr, I’m going to p**s boiling water and s**t bricks from happiness….. 🙂

    2. I sure hope they put the 12Mp sensor in A99II.
For those who want a high-Mp slow monster, there’s the A7R and probably A7RII in the works.
A99II must be all about speed…

      1. Do you really want to stop down to 12 MP? At this point, Sony can likely produce a 24 MP sensor with ISO range in the low 100,000s which can produce clear ISO 6400 images (even with SLT), while still producing images at 24 MP – which has became the standard. I’d rather take a new 24 MP sensor with increased ISO range.

        1. Less MP would mean cleaner ISO in video and faster operation. As far as resolution goes, I rarely need more than 6Mp (allows 2x crop for an FHD monitor)

    3. “I’m going to buy this PHOTO camera and not use it for photography, I’m going to use it for video work.”

      1. Then why did Sony advertise the VIDEO so heavily? And anyway if you’ve been TROLLING these Web sites for any time you know there’s plenty of reasons videographers had to switch from camcoders. Look them up before adding zero to the debate again.

        1. If you are going to use a camera for video, use a video oriented camera.
          That’s logical right?
The a99 is clearly a photo first camera.
I’m not saying you should use a camcorder, but at least use something that is more focused on video.

          1. No, you’re first point is not right to begin with. Have you really never heard the arguments I’m about to make? Do I really have to make them again? Actually I’m going to waste my time typing them out again. Sufficed to say even one man band filmmakers dont want to be forced to film with 1/3 inch sensors. The gh4 shows you can have a fine stills camera and a fine video camera–it’s not like the two processes are so radically disimilar–all video cameras are still cameras from a certain point of view; they’re just tasked with capturing a lot of stills . As to your second point, the a99 heavily advertised it’s self as a great video capture tool–I didn’t purchase the camera to do something Sony didnt promise–no one put a gun to Sony’s head and told it to cripple it’s self in a bunch of ways and then hide those defects from the public–Sony sold me on a powerful video camera with powerful af, equally good at stills and video–it just so happened they were lying. And finally the whole point of my original comment was asking for a video centric full frame camera as a separate product apart from a 50 mp a99ii so shouldn’t you be agreeing with me?

  49. The fat lady has already sung and left the building. No way this is coming back…..wake me up when it is SR5

    1. When you say fat…we talking like….two double whoopers fat or like…a McDouble? When she is singing are like..pickles flying out of her mouth? I’m assuming the building she is leaving must be crowded which would explain the quick exit. Definitely not a Sony convention then. I’d check her asss rolls and make sure she isn’t hiding an RX100II under there. Damn tiny cameras are easy to swipe.

    2. No… She’s on the can, having eaten up too much FE marketing. She’ll be back, and 10lbs lighter.

  50. Time to get ready for the big boy camera. It’s what we all secretly want. BRING ON THE MAN GUNS!!!!!

  51. Yikes! September, So the A7rII won’t get out until October November? Maybe not until Photokina. Then Make it by Xmas.

  52. In six months Sony will look back and see a small recovery in A-mount lens sales this month, following this rumour. They will all scratch their heads at what possibly could have motivated all these people to buy A-mount lenses again.
The Titanic was a great ship- it was the captain that was the problem…

    1. anyone serious about photography would not base lens purchases on a rumor site. especially considering the accuracy of rumors lately. sr3 , might as well be a an sr1.

      1. Anyone serious about Sony A mount photography is waiting for signs like these to continue investment in the system. Many have cold feet for good reason and have a wait and see approach. Consumer confidence is low enough that rumours are seen as little life lines.

        1. Actually I’ve been tempted to buy a Sal 70-400 G2 on a good deal. But I will wait with buying further Sony Gear until this camera has materialised.

  53. Yes, and chances of it happening now are slim at best, they just added that very lens in E-mount. Same story with modern macro with SSM and IF.

  54. This camera is shaping up to be a must have for Sony DSLR users. Plenty of FF A-Mount users are going to buy into this camera. Plenty of FE users who’ve already purchased A-Mount glass will likely buy into it.

I actually more interested in the 24-105mm, and a 85mm SSM than the actual camera.

  55. I grasped your post but it is very rant-y as is this follow-up.

“How can I ignore the FACT that no mention of STILLS functionality was found in this SR3 rumor.”

What fact? This is a rumor on a rumor site that mentions one feature the admin heard about. And there was a still rumor component – a new lens 24-105mm and a much requested update to a popular lens (85mm with SSM).

I like the MIS. I can use canon hot shoe Pocket wizards on my a99. I can use flashes on my a99 or rx100 II (and an a7s II or a7r II that I may add). The adapter sadly is flawed but MIS accessories lock on as well as on other camera systems.

If the Canon is for you – go for it. We all know the higher res the sensor the less ideal it is for video beyond 8mp 16×9/ 12mp 3×2. 1080p is only 2k. 4k from a 36mp sensor will have less down converting (3 to 1) than 1080p out of a 24mp sensor (8 to 1). That said, I think megapixels will be in the 20s again.

If Sony can leverage the SLT advantage of AF during video (while substantially improving the full frame AF system) they may be able to get some converts.

  56. A99 is still $2000.D610 is $1500. By the time Sony has the successor in the stores (if ever), everybody is in another system.

  57. I doubt there are many shooters, new to Sony, through the FE mount. That have purchased A-mount glass. Plenty of smaller native options.

  58. Will be nice with good ISO like a 7S…

24-105 and 85mm (i have) is not lens for professional.

Will need now 24mm (low light) and 105 MACRO… boths Zeiss

  59. I have a lot of A-mount lenses and my wife and my self are professional photographers. We need a higher mega-pixel full frame camera to record all the fine art images that we take. We are using A77 crop frames now, they work good and have won many contests, but need to move to full frame cameras with 4k also.
If any body is looking at these posts, please hear us and produce the A99 mark II.
    Thank you for your time.

  60. Hi Sony people :),

If your reading are you brining out a new A99 Model if so when?

I know your all excited about your A7 range. And all the new lenses for it.
How about looking after your existing customers.
I have 4 Sony Mount (non hot shoe) flashes that work perfectly. Then you decide to change it.
Did you offer adapter / trade up discounts to your existing customers ?
I also own alot of A-mount Lenses.
I do own an A7 its great. I have one kit lens and the A-mount adapter.
But the adapter moves little and adds bulk. I cannot afford to replace all my camera and lenses.
But I also own an A550 & A580 that still work fine.
I cannot afford to replace all my cameras and lenses with e-mount gear.
Having said that, I now appreciate the benefits of full frame.
But prefer the A-mount. as such if your not going to bring out a new A99 I want to purchase the current one while there are still some left.
So please just let your long term supporters know whats going on.
