    1. Pointless? Not at all. The Q system is great for street life. And it does way better than people like you think.

Oh, sure, it’s nor perfect. No camera is. But I find the ergonomics are more photographer centric than many models not only in its class but even a bit higher.

  1. Needs to be less ugly or cheaper. :/ Cut it down to half that price and I would buy one for the proverbial shits and giggles.

    1. Have you used both the RX100 and the Q? I have and prefer shooting with the Q. Like the Ricoh GRD, the Q is way more fun, and better for street photography.

    2. The RX100 can’t change lenses, has no external flash option and in my opinion worse ergonomics. Not saying the RX100 is a bad camera because it’s not, but I don’t see the automatic win vs a Q proposition.

Remember also the Sony lens goes slow as you zoom in, so for some focal lengths doesn’t look as hot as one may imagine.

  2. Pentax designers would they prey of some existential or metaphysical questioning, or perception disorder, or business leaders facetious or in midlife crisis, to leave us such horrors?

  3. The way the sensor is implemented is quite strange. It look’s like they designed the body so the sensor could easily be replaced by another (bigger?) one. Am I just dreaming?

  4. You get it all wrong. It is not the sensor that is tiny, it is the camera that is huge. It is an APS-C chip you can see there.
Finally a camera you can operate with snow gloves on !

  5. Keep in mind that the lenses are tiny too. If they used a similar sensor to the Sony rx100, then it will have superb IQ aside from noise at high ISO…

  6. I love products that drive photo geeks crazy! And guess what: someone somewhere will do really fine work with this camera.

  7. Judging by all the comments here the odds are that none of you own a Q nor have many of you even played with one. It is not dSLR, it is not an apsc mirrorless camera but that does not mean it doesn’t have merit and a place in camera land. I own one and love it. It’s with me at all times as well the fisheye lens. The build quality of the original Q is stellar and the controls are brilliantly laid out.

It is not in the same image quality league as the sony RX100 and thankfully it’s not in the same price bracket either. It does however have a standard hotshoe, excellent manual control and interchangeable lenses. The 5.5x crop factor means with a standard mount adapter my 50mm f/1.4 lens becomes a 275mm f/1.4 lens.
The “small” sensor also means tons of depth of field for macros. I won’t beat a dead horse here because those that ‘get’ the Q love it, those that don’t bash it.

I for one am extremely happy that they’re releasing a new body and at a decent price point. I take it as a reassuring sign that Pentax has not abandoned the mount and that some new autofocus lenses are in my future.

  8. I like the design of the original Q better. But the Q10 means that Pentax is going to continue the Q line which is great news as it will mean more lenses. Both the 8.5 1.9 and the 5-15 are extremely sharp lenses. Hoping for a proper tele and a wide angle prime.

People who haven’t used the Q would likely enjoy it. Like the Fuji X10 or Ricoh GRD, the Q is a “photographers camera” with a thoughtful interface/feature set.

  9. Looking at all that empty space, it actually makes me wish they would use a square sensor in there. That might make this camera a lot more appealing for some.
