So the add-on EVF is now officially obsolete?
Probably an XAVC update for the A6000 soon.
Yeah that sucks. A6000 with touch is what I want, but this actually would have been better if I could have used the tiltable evf.
It appears Sony decided the benefits of a built in flash sell more cameras than the ability to add on a flash or evf.
That’s not mutually exclusive. For instance, my NEX F3 has an inbuilt flash and an accesory port.
But given that they seem to finally have stopped to ask for ridiculous premiums for EVF-integrated models, I don’t care that much anymore.
Really hope there will be an XAVC-S update for the A6000
And no GPS ! We want GPS in all and every camera !
I want a gold toilet seat!!!!
Where can one get a gold toilet seat for < 30$?
Speak for yourself
Will you be missing anything if gps is included ?
I know it’s very futile but I like the new colours. I hope they will do a red one or a blue one. It’s neat for this kind of little fun cameras.
But I will not buy it. You win a little volume but lose some great functionalities in comparison of the premiums APSC e-mount.
What I think could be a great move is the same body with a FF sensor. So you can invest in one set of lenses and having two very different shooting experiences in function of the body you want to use.
“Dear Sony, please release this camera in all sorts of fun colors because then everyone will want to buy it…not me though, I don’t plan on buying it, but colors are awesome.”
No 4k is disappointing
Too small for 4K, it will overheat.
They could add it as option with decreased fps, at least.
It’s not the FPS, it’s the overheating of the processor (I think), That’s why it isn’t done internally in the A7s too (but it overheats too externally).
decreasing fps twice decreases calculations and heat output twice
twice less fps = twice less cpu load = twice less heat output
And body 50% smaller for the A5100 vs A7S 😉
In response to your other posts
Not necessarily, you’re assuming it’s a linear graph (twice less fps = twice less cpu load = twice less heat output) whereas in most situations (when it comes to optimization) usually it’s a curve graph.
it’s not strictly linear, but it’s very close to linear
I don’t think it’s a size issue. Sony is just greedy and wants to protect it’s pro video camera market as much as they can, they’re a company that wants to make money after all. I hope Panasonic forces them to react soon.
You need some space to dissipate heat. Smaller interior volume is an disadvantage.
A7s overheats (not really overheat, but it gets really hot) when recording 4K externally, I know APSC sensors are smaller than FF ones, but these small size bodies WILL overheat.
Do take note that m4/3rd sensor size is way smaller then APSC yet alone FF.
I’m not sure if you own any of the A7’s but just shooting it continuously in photo only mode and you can feel the lens mount getting warm. So I’m not surprise with the current sensor tech, having it decode 4K internally will overheat things (reminds me of NEX 7), but just as how NEX 7 overheat problem is solved, I’m certain in the future they’ll be able to solve the issue as well.
ISO is not 10 but 100
So no NEX 5 top dial, grip, and does not match the FPS? Jesus, Sony.
FYI. This is an update for the NEX 3. Not the NEX 5
No, this is it for NEX 5. NEX 3 + NEX 5 = A5000 series. A mixture of some of the best and worse features of the two. Sony is dumb, but hey folks got thier megapi*els right?
They aren’t dumb, but they have the bad habit of constantly micro-managing their product lines, adding and removing features, trying to find the optimal market position for their products.
I agree, top dial is a must. 5/5N/A5000 doesn’t have one, 5R/5T do 🙂
exactly. And the 5100 too apparently
XAVC-S is nice. Can it touch-focus?
But I think at photokina, Sony will look so “last year” if they don’t bring 4K to cheaper cameras, like Panasonic is doing now (FZ1000, GM2? ,LX8? ) I wish there was a APS-C emount with 4K.
It´s funny im also waiting for APS-C size Cam with 4K/XAVC-S and fast AF … wondering why sony didnt include 4K into a77.
XAVC-S Finally! Does it have 120p too?
yes if ti is XACVS 😀
Not necessarily… :
I hope they bring XAVC-S to the A7 A7r and A6000 with firmware
not doable
orly?
Can you explain why? I’m in the market for a camera and was dead set on the a6000, but now this news of a better video format on the a5100 has me thinking twice. I can’t do without EVF or top dials, so the 5100 is out, but i don’t want to wait for the 6100…..
It will only be possible to produce XAVC-S if the processing chip has the throughput and processing capability to do so. The processing chips in cameras don’t achieve their speed by using general purpose cpus (think how long it takes to render video on a desktop computer), but by having special hardware assists. If the fundamental hardware capability hasn’t been engineered in, then no firmware release will solve it. There are also potential issues with heat dissipation.
Of course it’s not impossible that the capability exists, but only Sony will know.
Sounds good, but I have a problem with its small grip. I was in the stop the other day to check out both A6000 and A5000. You literaly can’t hold A5000 comfortably especially with large/long lens attached – it just escapes your hand! A6000 is a lot “grippier” and very comfortable. Just a warning for others. I expected 5100 to have NEX-5N/5T body with their perfect grip.
The other problem with A6000 and A5000: fast hybrid AF doesn’t seem to work with my all-round Tamron 18-200 lens. It misses twice as much compared to new SEL16-50PZ kit. I heard that lens firmware upgrade might help. Does Tamron release firmware upgrades for its lens? Anyone managed to get hybrid AF working on NEX-5R and later with Tamron? If AF won’t work as fast as it shoud then there’s no point for me in buying either A6000/A5100.
It seems to be the difference between Sony branded lens and Tamron branded, even it made at same factory…
Hotshoe??
no hotshot, just a lame flash we rarely use anyway
Even better, a built-in wireless trigger.
And extreme ghosting again, like on A7 and A6000. My hope is the future compact full frame camera will not have hybrid cr@p.
please show ghosting examples
I have problems with ghosts in my home, but they aren’t visible in the pictures I take.
So you suffer from extreem no ghosting? You should buy a better camera! 🙂
Ghosting/flares emanating from in-frame lighting caused by sensor reflections is well documented on the A7 and NEX-6. I’ve noticed it on my A7 and NEX-6, but it doesn’t bother me. It IS there though.
Start shooting or take ophthalmologist care
I am yet to see any ghosting after almost a year of shooting on an A7…Go troll another forum…
Never seen any ghosting with my A7…
Ghosting may present itself in some situation or another, but I don’t know about *extreme*…
Just speaking from personal experience here. Haven’t seen examples yet. Hey, I’ll just use Google. Give me a second. 🙂
Hope it really will include touchscreen and A6000 AF, and also hope about NEX5 body like. 180 degree rotating screen is very good.
But I see some big disadvantages for me:
1) No accessory port at all, so I can’t use my 5N external EVF or adaptor to trigger external flashes from it.
2) I can’t see IR remote control led window. So no more small remote control will be usable as I did with 5N? Ok I think I can replace a part of this functions with smartphone with wi-fi connection to camera and can use time-lapse app in camera to shoot some long actions.
3) 6fps vs 10fps in NEX 5N is not a big deal from A5100 if it’s true
Other things in new camera is right I think. I think SONY will finally make direct replacement for old NEX 5 Lineup with accessory port, additional control dials as 5R and 5T has and normal size body as previous cameras had.
Otherwise NEX-5 lineup is dead! And no replacement at all for it. A6000 is not replacement since screen us not touchable and size is not so compact for every day use and carry on.
Nex 3N and a5000 are targeted for social-addicted users like what Sony has promoted in the commercial video. IMO 180 degree tilted screen for selfie is the most important feature in these camera. If there is accessory port, 180 degree tilted screen would be useless as the accessory would block the screen. This is either you want accessory port and viewfinder, you go for a6000. if you like selfie and good image, go for a5000 series.
A6000 is useless for me cause of larger size and no touchscreen I most time use shooting people. With A6000 custom AF point selection mechanism it takes too much time to dig all the time into menus to reassign AF point I need.
And on Sony NEX 5T 180 degree screen doesn’t block anything in accessory port)
The real thing is the flash sync speed, what the hell?!
As i know A6000 comes with old video format, but this A5100 brother to A6000 comes with XACVS?
Anyone know if A5100 24MP sensor can hit 2200 low light ISO?
Any chance of full sensor video readout?
Seems compared to the NEX-5T the Level Gauge is missing, Remote Control and Audio-In (at least via ECM-SST1 or other microphone), which unfortunately for me would be all essential, so I’m hoping for the Full Frame α5 at photokina…
another toycamera without gps without lenses.
touchscreen?
Superb work, keep up:))))
It also doesn’t have Espresso function :((
actually you are the bigger troll, but no offense:)
According to this rumor it will have a touchscreen. For this camera there are about 19 lenses available.
GPS is a fun function, but eating your battery and not available on very many serious cameras (like Canon EOS 1200D (no touch screen) Canon 70D (only as option) Nikon 810 (GPS only optional, no touchscreen) All toy cameras?
A camera targeted at consumers without a large budget doesn’t make it a toy. It will have the IQ of the a6000 – that matters more.
If a5100 has touch screen, may be using it with an optional view finder would make it a better camera than a6000?
Look at the pictures, is there a space for the accessories port? I don’t think so (or the pictures at the bottom are wrong)
Very nice. How about “mic input?”
There will be a mike, and it can input sound, is that enough? 😉
Don’t expect that for this camera. I think it will start at about $500, so they have to cut some corners to make a profit.
It’s not only cutting some corners. Jack port isn’t just a hole… it takes a lot space inside camera, and a5100 is really small.
wow!!!
it’s Awesome!!!
Holy crap, ISO10, biggest breakthrough of the year.
lol 🙂
Now, with a combination of the A5100 and the A7S, I can go from taking pictures of black cats in coal mines to taking pictures of my friends on the surface of the sun with no problems whatsoever!
Really?? ISO 10? It says from ISO 100.
Please…the admin made a mistake->I joked about it-> he corrected it…is it that hard to guess?
Darn, I missed it :-/
Isn’t the A5000 was just announced in January!!! What are the improvements over that one?
Very well done sony. Very innovative.
Everything. Seriously, the A5000 was more of a successor to the Nex 3 series, while this is more of a successor to the Nex 5 series. It appears to be a huge upgrade to the a5000, at least from what I can tell.
great. the weight is less and than RX100M3 and dimensions of RX100M3 are 101.6 x 58.1 x 41 mm weighing 290 with battery. the A5100 are 109.6mm x 62.8mm x35.7mm weighing 224 body only. So what do you suggest buying, I have 35mm F1.8 E-MOUNT LENS and 18-55mm Lens too. Should I stick with E-mount cameras for travel?
In my experience, you should add 55-210. That’s the ultimate traveller’s set
I’m more of a wide angle shooter my self.. I dont use zoom that much. So the kit lens 16-50mm is better to carry with me :).
APS-C sensor can create better result than RX100M3 1″ sensor. Especially with 35mm/f1.8 is a very nice lens too!
When traveling, If each time going out you wonder if you take the camera with you or not, go RX100. If you don’t mind the nex size, go nex.
This is bulls**t. This gets XAVC-S, but my A6000 doesn’t. Sony better release a firmware update for A6000 that has XAVC-S 50MB.
I’m pretty sure you can buy an α6100 very soon…
I don’t want to buy an “A6100”. My A6000 is only a few months old, if that. Sony needs to add XAVC-S to A6000 via firmware update.
Do we know if this is possible?
haha, you should.
from sony point of view you should buy every 2-3 month a body.
after a couple of bodies you will have the chance to also buy some lenses. But not before your 4th body.
Lol, you learned the Sony rule of buying cameras – you get what you get on day 1 and future improvements will only come to successive cameras.
Christopher, some Sony cameras have gotten great FW updates, so it isn’t a rule, although some cameras haven’t.
That seems outside the norm, but glad to hear some cameras have received good support.
I do see your desire, but from my experience you won’t get that. My very first NEX-5 never got Lens Compensation, nevertheless Sony released more and more lenses not working properly without. Except while the very first E-Mount generation Sony only released Firmware Updates with bug fixes.
Your very first Sony Nex 5 got a lot FW updates, including a lot things that where not bugfixes (like 3d panorama, creative filters, focus peeking, customisable buttons and a lot small things.
No no lens correction, but are you sure it is possible to make that available in the Nex 5, or did we need to throw out some other options, like focus peeking etc.
And for the Nex 7 they came with a FW update with better bracketing. So there are a lot of FW updates for the Nex cameras. And for us original Nex 5 buyers, maybe it is now time to step up to the A6000 or A5100?
Do you know something we don’t are are you simply guessing based on product cycles?
I can understand your frustration.
However the way sony treated existing products with FW support, I assume your expectation of adding XAVC (if it’s possible at all) to the A6000 will not be fulfilled.
Why they didn’t put it into the A6000 at day one I don’t understand – assuming it was possible at that time.
As most probably only few people will “downgrade” if the want this feature, I guess NEXfive’s user comment of waiting for an A6100 is anything but unrealistic.
6fps, WTF does SONY think about!
To answer your question: Sony was thinking of a low price!
Start complaining when you hear the price. When it is higher then $500 for the body you may have a point when it is lower then there might be a reason why it is so cheap.
you got the point. It’s all down to price.
no relationship. 6 fps with same sensor as a6000 = intentionally crippled.
I’d imagine taking many frames per second builds up a lot of heat, which in a camera as compact as this one, probably isn’t a good thing. Pushing up FPS in a camera this small is probably not a great idea. Additionally, there’s a lot more processing that goes into dealing with so many frames per second which this camera probably can’t handle as well as the a6000. They have to reduce cost somewhere.
Overheating is significant for continuous shooting, and we are talking about peak fps which lasts only for a second.
What Sony doing is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination
My a99 ” only” does 6fps raw. The 5d 2 it replaced only did 3.9. 6fps in a budget, pocketable camera is pretty damn good.
I just read the specs for the third time and only now I notice TOUCH LCD! IF true, This is the next camera I will buy. This will be a fast AF camera with very good IQ, yet small and light including touch screen. A week ago I asked for a real NEX-5T successor, here we have it (except for the accessory shoe)!
touch screen is indeed very handy, especially for video. This is the reason I am still keeping my NEX 5N.
warning to both of you: A5100 will probably have the same 180 tilt screen as A5000 (only up 180, but no flip down at 45). NEX-5N screen CAN flip down 50 – which is a basic/must have feature for me. I never wanted that 180 tilt up in the first place. Ability to shoot above crowd has top priority!
OMG, what about turning that thing upside down. Ask Sony to shoot for you…
no tilt down screen, loose a dial and fn button…
So, where is the nex 5t successor ?
Theoretically you are right, but I personally never use the tilt down function on any of my cameras. Secondly, the second dial was only useful when shooting manual, otherwise it duplicated the rear dial function. The Fn button poses a legitimate concern, but I haven’t seen the back of the A5100 yet, including customization options, so there’s still hope.
Not sure why people are expecting Sony’s entry level CSC to come with all the bells and whistles like GPS and 4K Video, top dial, 20fps etc etc. The A5000 is the cheapest currently available Sony Interchangable Lens camera (in the UK Sony Store at least) so expecting the specs to be anything other than “entry level” is either naive, stupid or just trolling
They expect it because NEX-7 never got replaced. We need a NEX-7 successor.
Hi-End APS-C camera with proper EVF etc.
In fact, feature wise the A6000 can be seen as a replacement for the NEX7.
I assume the only feature of the NEX7, that users are missing is the fantastic TriNav design.
Cannot figure out a company that comes up with something good but then replaces it with something less liked by consumers. It seems that Sony almost makes a great camera but then shoots themselves in the foot
+1
As Mark2’s are becoming popular these days, Sony should have made a NEX7M2 instead of the a6000
Why? That you love the A7 does not make it an all time best seller! And there are some rumors that the A7000 (Nex7m2) is comming begin next year…
??
Why are you referring to the A7? Although owning an A7R I am not 100% happy with and would love an A7RII with NEX7 design.
Rumors are rumors, two years ago an A1 as D4/1D competitor was announced and we got nothing.
Honestly, what should they put into an A7000 that puts it so far ahead that it will justify a 1000+ price? The A6000 has everything that serves an advanced amateur.
To be honnest, the Nex 6 was better selling then the Nex 7. The A6000 is very well liked by many, many people. Not that many people like metal cameras that costs over $1000 over plasic cameras with the same features (look at the Nex 6/Nex 7 and now the A6000. Many people loves this camera!
TriNav, useful EVF, horizon meter, microphone input.
Everything that made shooting with NEX-7 much more inspiring and out of the way.
Useful EVF – yes
Horizon meter – yes
Microfon input – via MIS
As i said, the TriNav is what we are missing. 🙂
you really think nex7 is better than a6000?
Because this site is swarmed by photo nerds looking for enthusiast cameras at point and shoot prices, not the target market I suspect Sony planned for the entry-level a5100.
top dial is hardly a premium feature. It’s a basic thing/must have. 5R/5T already had it
That was only an example – the point still stands. Anyway – the only must-have control is a shutter button – everything else just makes it easier to take photos
No electronic silent shutter: No deal.
No multi interface hotshoe or even that proprietary NEX accessory terminal: No deal.
So a6000
Waaaaaaaaaaaaa
Full sensor readout for video, like the RX10? SLOG 2? If it has these two things this is my next camera! But I bet it doesn’t have them. 🙁
Waaaaaaaaaaa
You forgot uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 HDMI output and internal 4K recording at $399 MSRP. Without those “Total Fail Sony!”
i was thinking about to buy the a6000. now, i just wait till this little kitty is released.
30 days until Photokina and Sony releases hot tip on new champagne colored a5100. Sweet! Nicely done, Sony marketing department. Nicely done!
+1
Yeah, looks real nice with a silver lens… Not.
My guess: it will have a digital level, because Sony really just released this camera to piss off A6000 owners.
it will start around 500$, right?
how much discount will be enough to clear older stocks?
for ex next article nex3n for 300$ or nex6 for 500$.
Is it just a start of clearing older stocks? or a good point to buy in?
I have an a5000 already. I love the “selfie” tilt screen but I really wish it had a few more customizeable buttons on it and a hot shoe.
50MB/s bitrate in XAVC-S video codec
WOW! 50MB/s bitrate in XAVC-S codec? I think this feature alone makes it a better video camera than the a6000.
Admin, will it shoot 720p 120fps like the A7S? Thanks! btw here is a slow motion video that I shot with the A7S: vimeo.com/103598355 enjoy!
You’ve got a cool logo with the cute panda Nilz.
Nice video.
Does it work ? Can you take pictures with it ?
For weight of body in 224g only, I bet it made by plastic like a5000, right?
Hopefully Sony allows user to disable the fake shooting sound which it’s irritating for a5000.
no sound is better
but i doubt there’d be
The shutter in all E-mount bodies (except for a7s) is at least half-mechanical. Do you want Sony to disable your shutter?
nex-3n / a5000 have fake also shutter sound which cannot be disabled in menu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFVUbGNvVSQ
the (shrunken) size is impressive given the A6000 internals
looks like my 5T without the NAV dial on top. Some people are going to complain about that. IMC, I won’t.
I think Sony is contracting/consolidating their old 3 & 5 series into the 5xxx series. the 6xxxx series will be the upgraded 5 series of the nex. Whether we’ll see a 7 series is an open question. Most likely, they will just reposition that into the a7 we see now. So, maybe the 7 will be off of the table unless they want to fill in a U$1,000-1,200 camera. But I think, they’d rather get an a7 in there for about the same price in the future rather than continue the nex 7 or its substitute advanced aps-c.
For me, the a5xxx and a6xxx rationale is beginning to clear up as to how Sony intends to play them out. I very much doubt we’ll see a firmware update to XAVC-S for the a6000. We’ll likely see that in the a6100 plus likely a 4k video.
Regardless, the a5100 is a good upgrade from a 5T or earlier who wants something small and not bulky as th e6000, but have it’s AF. That fast AF of the a6000 is it’s main strength vs the older models. The a5000 was very weak and in many areas the 5t trumps it. I hope the a5100 has the same flip screen as the 5t though so you can shoot selfie and overhead as well. Otherwise, it’s a big glaring setback.
I also would not be surprised if it will also not have a mic-in, much less a headphone. Not sure if this one has a pop up flash, but it has to have some sort of flash there, whether its a clip on or a pop up flash.
People shouldn’t expect this camera to be fully spec’d. It’s their entry level. What is important for this model is that it’s AF is the same as the a6000. That’s a big thing. That opens up the shooting experience by a big leap. I wish my 5t has that. Now all we wait for is how much. U$650 is about right for a kit with the std 16-50. The body could be U$500 to start with.
Let’s wait for the full spec and maybe some back shots and top shots to see what it has.
price will be key. A6000 has been out for a while (insony terms)
i just ordered A6000 on friday for 380GBP. even getting hit by import tax, the overall price will still be pretty keen. so it will be interesting to see what the price is for A5100.
Where did you find the A6000 at 380GBP ? Sounds good…
full sensor readout, and 120fps 720p sound great!
These days, ice bucket challenge gains its popular. To follow this charity, I also dumped the ice water to myself and I recorded that with my Sony A5100. And soon I encountered another
“challenge”, which is to convert Ice Bucket Challenge AVCHD to MP4. Finally, a video enthusiast recommended me Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac and it really did well in handling this conversion.
