Sony UK confirms new mirrorless camera is coming!

I repeated many times that soon Sony will announce the NEX-6/7 successor. And now Sony UK confirmed at Photographyblog that there will be “new compact system camera models at both the CP+ show and Photokina later in the year“. As you know the big CP+ photoshow in Yokohama starts on February 13. Along that Sony UK also said that they will launch a new “ultra-zoom bridge camera” with a “faster processor than previous generations“.  And this is going to surprise some readers here: Sony UK said they sold out the QX10 and they also have strong sales on the QX100. And that’s why a second generation is definitely coming. Stay tuned on SAR. I am pretty sure early camera specs or even images will leak out soon…

    1. To be honest if Sony had released oss FE primes (even just a 50mm and a 100mm macto), I’d have bought an a7. The system’s crying out for consumer priced oss primes…

      1. Only interested in FE (pretty sure the 50/1.8 OSS is apsc) – Sony’s nailed the form factor perfectly. I’d settle for an a7 with a stabilised 50mm (for night time/low light street) and a stabilised 100mm macro (without having to resort to an adapter).

    1. OSS would be nice, but Zeiss primes don’t seem to get it.

Maybe OSS will show up in a cheaper f2.8 version later on.

  1. “NEX-6/7 successor”? Are those two being replaced by a single camera, or will there be two new ones in the near future?

    1. Unless Sony is planning to go all out and truly make the 7 an outstanding APSC model with pro-grade features, I personally don’t see a reason to keep both 6 and 7 models continuing side by side. Sony can take a page from Olympus and have a top spec camera that doesn’t necessarily have a FF sensor in it. I’d personally be very interested in that sort of camera as APSC seems to fit my needs well enough for my types of shooting.

    1. Scroll few news down – it was just recently. What – now you want Admin to post the same thing over and over again every day just to satisfy your inability to use scroll?

  2. I think you omitted some of the best parts from the article:
    * the bridge camera has a burst modus than goes on shooting till the memory card is full
    * faster autofocus seams to be a very important thing for all new cameras from Sony

I think a faster AF is necessary to compete against the new cameras from Samsung/Oly and the rumored new Fuji (in general Fuji seams to have reached or overpasses Sony in terms of AF speed)

    1. The focus on speed sounds promising.
New processor – no more “processing…” on the display. I wonder if that also applies on the multi-shot modes (e.g. handheld twilight)?

    2. True.
It sounds like a complete rewrite of the operating system, as well as newer gen cpu (aka Bionz X) .
This raises the hopes for the a79.
Focus on focus speed also fits nicely on an a77 replacement.

    1. They really need to step up and release something for the a-mount or give a clear road map. Pretending it doesn’t exist sends the wrong message to customers.

  3. Would there be any hopes of an RX100 successor with inbuilt (yes inbuilt) EVF? If something like that came out Id be all over it. I want it compact(as the currecnt rx100´s) but still useable in strong sunlight because I would use it for travel/hiking. Also I really miss composing shoots through a VF instead of just using the LCD as I do now ;/.

Right now Panasonic has the LF1 but that sensor aint as good as the RX100 and the LF1 EVF is somewhat mediocre.

    1. Personally, I like the direction of the RX100 II with the hotshoe and option for evf. It keeps the camera smallest when you need it, yet allows the use of a viewfinder when you want it. I just think the price of that accessory viewfinder needs to come WAY down. Why does it cost much more than the accessory EVF the NEX5 uses, aren’t they of the same quality?

  4. “And this is going to surprise some readers here: Sony UK said they sold out the QX10 and they also have strong sales on the QX100.”
    – why a surprise? I thought it was well known that QX sells brilliantly, outselling every NEX that Sony ever made. You admin posted this yourself on SAR right after pre-orders on QX begun.

  5. Ohhhh… right after Fuji takes the world by storm with the XT-1 teaser and specs, and even the most hardcore NEX users (including Vlad and me) admit they might add one to their camera bag. What a coincidence…

    1. Are you suggesting this site’s choice of news content revolves around you and your tantrums because the NEX-7 successor hasn’t arrived?

Anyway, it’s amazing how easily people are manipulated by this retro fad.

          1. I guess she was saying that Fuji is going to announce soon an interesting higher-end camera and that this is Sony’s response. It was kind of very clearly written. Now, what were you suggesting?

      1. In 2014 I prefer a NEX-7 or A7(r) styled successor above any retro styled digital SLR shaped contender.
        Film days are behind us.
I strongly believe in Sony’s power to again smash all doubters like they did with the RX10 and A7.
Fuji does invent awesome stuff too, yet Sony can outsmart any company because they have knowhow unrelated to cameras … like all kinds of electronic devices (in addition to rivaling fuji sensors and processors).
Can’t wait for real NEX-8 specs to surface.

          1. Aperture control has no reason to be on the lens in a modern camera. That is not putting dials in the right place.

          2. lol aperture on ring is the one thing I do like about Fuji. I’d avoid Fuji for other reasons – no IS (body or lens), no ISO 100, slow AF, gap between 1/125 and 1/60 on shutter dial, etc. Releasing a Nikon DF wannabe doesn’t change any of that.

          3. @yeahbutno Aperture is a mechanical property of the Lenses, so it’s logical to find it there, and I do would like that Sony (or Zeiss) put a Lens Aperture ring on the lenses… but even better would be to drop the focus-by-wire PLEASE! (Or at least, make hard stops!)

  6. I find it unusual that we really know nothing about the NEX-6/7 update or replacement – it’s a total mystery. What does the silence mean?
    1) It’s a very minimal refresh?
    2) They really don’t know what direction to go in right now?
    3) It’s something very special and they are keeping it secret (unlikely)
    4) ???

    1. I wonder the same thing. Rumors about the new Fuji began in october. Both Olympus and Fuji are announcing their new camera next week, before the chinese new year.

For now, I vote either 1 or 3, but given the lack of rumors for now, I doubt that we will see anything ground breaking so that leaves us with 1, minimal refresh. I’m sure Sony would try to create some interest about the announcement if anything interesting was coming. This is even more true considering that competitors are bringing new cameras at the same time.

A small refresh with everything improved (small increments a la Canon) might be something that Sony needs. Better AF, better ISO, better dynamic range and NEW LENSES (16-50 f/2.8, 85mm f/1.8). I’d be totally happy with that.

      1. I gotta admit – the NEX-7 is such a good camera. Lose the AA filter, keep the microlens layer thin, improve the noise performance a bit – and it’s a top top top camera. (Sadly, I foresee TriNAVI going away)

  7. Finaly a GPS onboard would be great!
I want all of my photos geotagged, without the hassle of an external device and geotagging afterwards.

  8. And what about the nex 9 rumors?( Full format, mirrorless camera) i really want a nex body to use in company with legacy lenses… should i wait to the nex-7 successor or the big nex-9?
