An UPDATED Full Frame Contax G to E-mount electronic adapter (autofocus enabled) will be available around the 1st week of December. The AF speed has been improved over the video test you saw a couple of days ago (video embedded on bottom of this post).
This means that all the following lenses will work perfectly on your A7-A7r with full autofocus and electronic aperture control:
Hologon 16mm; 1:8 on [shoplink 16235 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Biogon T* 21 mm; 1:2,8 on [shoplink 16236 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Biogon T* 28 mm; 1:2,8 on [shoplink 16237 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Planar T* 35 mm; 1:2,0 on [shoplink 16238 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Planar T* 45 mm; 1:2,0 on [shoplink 16239 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Sonnar T* 90 mm; 1:2,8 on [shoplink 16240 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Vario-Sonnar T* 35 – 70 mm; 1:3,5-5,6 on [shoplink 16241 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].
Go and buy them! 🙂

The metabones manual focus ones don’t work on the A7/A7R?
they work. But manual focusing only!
You mention auto aperture, but all the Contax G lenses have a completely are manual aperture controlled from the ring on the lens.
Do you know if the adapter will disable the Af lamp?
The worst thing about the A7 kit zoom is that your hands will smell from cheap rubber after using it.
limited returns from this combo actually..
you cant use the 16,21,28 because they are simply unfit for a sensor like this, so that leaves you with 35,45,90 ..
I thought this came out last year already?
This is a bit confusing:
The YouTube video’s title is “[DEO-Tech] Contax G Adapter Mark2 EAGLE…”, and that adapter (already launched) has according to MX Camera’s web page no electronic aperture control: http://www.mxcamera.com/DEO/product_info.php?products_id=52
I hope what a ordered two days ago is that one.. It was the DEO Eagle Mark 2 yadda yadda
The adapter is on the marked already, i own it since this summer…
There is NO electronic aperture control, of course. Contax-G lenses’ aperture is set mechanically on the lens.
The adapter that will be launched in December is the Falcon FF adapter with electronic aperture control for Canon EF lenses.
You mixed the info about the two products, on deo-tech website they clearly state which is which
There are only ~3 lenses (two to be exact) that would work even on the APS-C. Useful for the those own them. I will not buy these (used) lenses to use on the A7/7R. There are far better performers out there.
What else performers (or link to articles about them) would you prefer?
I think the same than you, but i do not know about the ones you prefer
For the 28mm FOV I can’t think of any manual lens much better in terms of digital performace compared to the G28. The 28mm elmarit-m asph is sharper on digital, but then again it’s a $2,000 lens.
For the 50mm and 90mm FOV there are many worthy contenders. My mind goes to the 85mm f4 tele-tessar and even the old, huge Leitz 90mm f2 – both are plenty sharp on digital with great rendering.
I’m relieved to see this. I was afraid fear of infringement on patent and copy rights would have prevented making of such adapters. Let’s hope we see them for Nikon and Canon soon.
People are funny… they throw the biggest tantrums asking for built-in EVFs saying it’s amateurish to use a tilting LCD for composition. At the same time they soil themselves at the thought of having to use manual focus or manual aperture even when using specialised lenses.
Greetings,
I hope my Hologon 8/16 CG will works with A7…there are expected magenta shift with Biogons too, but if my Hologon will work, there shouldn’t be problem with Biogons too. Biogon 2.8/21 ZM, which is better suited to work with digital sensor, doesn’t work well at corners with A7/R. But I still have some faith in Hologons and Biogon 2.8/21 CG.
Best regards, WZ.
Have you tried yours with any of the NEX bodies? Be very careful when using a G mount version 16mm hologon on any digital body – I’ve commented about shutter damage below.
i have been using a metabones adapter with the contax 45mm G on it with A7R and it works beautifully….focusing is really easy with the combo of peaking and magnification
I’ve been using G28, 45 and 90 on my 5N for a long time and they work well and produce really sharp images. I would think for FF, G45 and 90 would still work well. These lenses are the right size for A7/r. Hope the new AF adapter work well, saving me the money for the expensive FE50mm. Anyway A7/r are not meant to be for action, AF speed is not my concern, but accuracy is.
I am pretty sure the following will not work perfectly:
Hologon 16mm; 1:8 on eBay (Click here).
Biogon T* 21 mm; 1:2,8 on eBay (Click here).
Biogon T* 28 mm; 1:2,8 on eBay (Click here).
On the other hand, 16 mm is f/8… Will probably be OK in image quality (but not with PDAF on A7).
Carl Zeiss Hologon 8/16mm doesn’t support autofocus nor TTL, even with Contax G1/G2 cameras 🙂 So using AF adapter with them is useless.
I hope that corner performance would be better with A7 than A7R. I need to wait till next week to check it with my own A7 🙂 Best regards, WZ.
Many fixed focal length lenses work by simply moving the entire lens assembly backwards or forwards. This happens when you turn the manual focus wheel.
But it doesn’t necessarily have to be done in the lens. It should be possible to create an E-mount adapter that moves the whole lens in these directions to achieve focus.
Autofocus for manual focus lenses (not only for Contax, but e.g. for M42 lenses) – has anybody heard of this idea?
This idea would never work on lenses with floating elements. Otherwise it could be feasible but would be a very complex device to create compared to what has been done so far and probably expensive, noisy, or otherwise suboptimal all for the use of outdated glass that can best be described as “having character.”
Probably not worthwhile.
No…
Wehn you compare this price with full electronic support to the price of Metabones speedbooster for FD at 399$,the latter is prohibitively priced, especially with the alternative of the A7.
On A7R, the G28 is a joke on the edges. This has nothing to do wth the sensor because it has the same performance on film. It is the optics and no sensor can improve that.
On film it vignettes, yes, but the color shift is all digital.
My limited experience with the G 28mm on the A7 was good good. There was some fairly heavy vignetting side open and I don’t think it is in the same league as the FE 35mm across the frame but still a very nice lens and I look forward to using it on a new A7.
Admin: did Deo-Tech/MX Camera confirm that this is a new build or version? The Eagle Mk.2 has been available for a while.
Admin messed up info.
The Eagle Mk.2 is already available, he is mixing info with the new Canon EF adapter
Anything longer than the 45mm kinda sucks on the A7(R) though…. the 28mm is fantastic on NEX however. That said, I had the original AF adapter and it’s VERY loud and pretty slow.
I wish Sony would release a 2014 lens roadmap with some wides that are designed for the A7r. It’s going to be worthless to me if I can’t shoot 21mm. Has any 3rd party 21mm or 24mm shown decent results on this camera yet?
Kind warning here, DONT screw an unmodified 16mm Hologon onto ANY NEX body.
The rear element protectors will damaged the shutter assembly. I’ve seen this happen to two NEX7s – if you have to use the G16 on digital (which is not the best of ideas, anyways), make sure to have a technician remove the metal protrusions at the back.
We are wondering, it has some misunderstandings about the “New adapter will be launched in Dec”.
In our production plan, we will release the brand new 3nd gen. of DEO (Canon EF to NEX) Full frame adapter in Dec., it will also carry “Bluetooth” inside which will be used for framework update.
To sum up all the upper information, since December DEO will still have two adapter models:
1. DEO (Contax G to NEX) Full frame supported adapter (Mark 2), Named Eagle;
2. DEO (Canon EF to NEX) Full frame supported adapter (Mark 3), Named Falcon;
The highlight features of Falcon (EF > NEX)
1. “Bluetooth” inside for framework update in the future.
2. “Full frame support”, Sony A7 and A7r for sure.
Contax Planar 35mm f/2 VS Voigtlander Nocton 35mm f/1.4
Which one will work flawlessly ?
I ‘d like a tiny, bright 35mm lens
which one do you recommend
