  1. Has Sony given any hints about what this means for long time A-mount Alpha users (like those of us who bought the A77)?

  2. Hi Andrea. You do a great job! With the introduction of the A7 and A7r, does this replace the NEX 7 or will there still be a replacement coming in the near future. Also, can we expect a substantial NEX 7 firmware update in the near future?

  3. Lens recommendations? I was hoping to get some recommendations from users here.

I’m considering buying the A7 and am switching from a Canon 60D. I do not have an extensive lens collection for my Canon, only two zoom lenses (one being the kit 28-200mm). I will most likely be selling these with the camera.

I shoot family, landscape and youth sports photos (volleyball and basketball). Since the lens selection for the A7 is currently very slim, I’m considering picking up another brand lens and an adapter? Would anyone have recommendations on a path to take? (lens brand and a couple of lenses to consider?) Medium price range lenses are probably best for my budget.

    Thank you.

    1. I am a total Nex fanboy, but if there is one thing the current NEX cameras lag at, it is fast autofocus in low light using native e-mount lenses. That seems like what you are trying to do.

This is where the current a-mount adapters shine (but only with a-mount lenses). It has yet to be proven how well these new cameras focus in low light, and it might be worth waiting for some reviews before jumping on board.

Most NEX users learn to ‘pre-focus’ on the general area of their subject, and fire away to get a good shot.

  4. i still don’t get it why the 70-200G II so expensive? does it have weather sealed? Really would like to see what make it cost that much.

    1. +1000

Ridiculous pricing… seems like just Nano coated and 4X faster focusing.

Not worth the upgrade in my opinion. I bought my 70-200G just few months ago and very happy with it.

    2. The price is being used purely for marketing and as a quality indicator, rather than actually improving its quality. The specs and features are identical to the old lens, which is more or less a re-branded Minolta G lens.

    3. the pricing just extremely unexpected compare to the new 70-400G II, i expect it cost around same price and I’m gonna get it. BUT now i think i will just look for 3rd party lens or wait for new 135mm ZA primes with ssm. Only if this lens really having beast auto focus speed and quality, but i think it just wont match the price that easily.

    4. The new Tamron 70-200 appears more and more appealing at $1249, while narrowly outperforming even the Canon 70-200 version II.

    5. It’s probably because the bodies are not making enough profit margin, so they increase the price of the lens to make up for it.

          1. SORRY FOR MESS A7R = £1,829.00 Incl. Vat
Do you think , street price gonna keep no more then 1500eur ?????

  5. omg how could people call this camera ugly. The D800 beside it looks like a fat chunky peace of plastic from the last century, unbelievable how there’s no “design” at all in this camera.. I know however it’s a tool and it has to be functional, not stylish. Nevertheless Sony made a real winner here, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

    1. I am not a fan of the design, but together with the optional grip, it does look great. And the RX10 looks amazing too. There’s a lot of thought in these designs.

    2. Never thought D800 could be this ugly, I’m switching back to Sony…oh, wait, where are the lenses for A7? Guess I need to be a bit more patient. Seriously, with a few useful and reasonably priced lens options, the A7/A7r is a no brainer.

  6. i am genuinely worried by the almost zeiss only lens road map. i dony mind zeiss as an addition to a normal lens lineup, but ONLY zeiss!?!? given sonys history in body price for the nex line you will in a year pick up the a7 body for half the price of the 55 1.8 zeiss lens….which will never drop in price…

    1. I could be wrong, but if you look at the roadmap, Zeiss is blue, G is yellow and the regular Sony is grey. Which would possibly mean that all these grey lines through 2014 and 2015 will be cheaper offerings.

    2. lenses are meant to last a lifetime . Camera’s 5 years (used to be 10) In terms of life cycles. Of course it could last a lifetime but body technology is more likely to change then lens design.

    3. Also I would think that a more premium offering such as a full frame busy, would be more heavily skewed towards high end glass. If you don’t need the quality, then one could adopt a cheaper system camera like APS-C NEX or m43.

  7. Guess who’s not pre-ordering? Me. I’m going to go hug my a77 and brand new A900 I got on the cheap right now. Have fun suckers!

  8. You guys also notice how freaking close that sensor is to the mount plate. Man, it looks like it was be really easy to scratch it when mounting a lens.

      1. Yes! Those who are not familiar with the mirrorless cams would find it nerve wracking but it is not a problem. The shutter is alwys open!

It is easier to clean the sensor unlike a DSLR or the SLT.

        1. Still not sure. I’d be worried about scratching it. Anyone get to touch one at the press conference. Maybe even mount one of these things!

  9. Admin,

Given that the A7 + Zeiss 35 f2.8 is less than the RX1, any rumors on an RX1 MKII refresh in the near future with the A7 sensor (and it’s on-sensor phase detection)?

  10. I’m sorry for asking such a dumb question, but….
If I used an A mount lens on this camera, will I be able to use steady shot? Or is that completely not the camera body?

  11. I’m wondering if the reason for not offering the kit lens with the A7r is because the lens will perform crap on the 36px sensor and maybe it’s just barley good on the A7… I love everything soy far except lack of lenses again. did this shit with the nex 7 waiting 1 1/2 for ok lenses and still nothing really wow. I’m afraid by the time theres any really good lenses for the A7’s there will be better cameras on the market. If i were to go buy a d800, theres a shit load of lenses ready to pick from, but the body is huge. wish we could have both worlds here small full frame and excellent lenses to go with it. at least a 2.8 zoom
