UPDATED: This is the first picture of “FDR-AX1” 4K Camcorder.

(SR5) 4K Camcorder
One comes from a top trusted source -> Thanks AL 😉 He says that Sony will soon announce the “FDR-AX1” 4K Camcorder. These are some specs:
XQD memory card
4K G-lens
XLR output
can switch between 4K and 2k
records in CAVC/S 4K HD
20x Optical zoom (fixed lens)
3x ND filter
Price….less than $5,000!

This is 4K for the mass! 🙂

Something else: I got this rumor from an Asian source:

(SR1-SR2) Mid-frame camera (???)
This is a strange rumor I got. You may help me out on this. The anonymous (and unknown) source told me that:
“maybe there will be a mid-frame camera coming key word “box””
You may tell me what he means with that? UPDATE: Maybe he means Medium Format camera (or digital back).

  1. the so called HDR-AX1 probably the same 4k prototype they showed at CES this year, the mid-frame (is it just cropped sensor) is probably that box thing shown at NAB 2013, we probably hear something at the IBC 2013 conference in two week (september 12th)

  2. There’s no such thing as a “mid frame” camera, the source maybe means medium format? Which is what “box” would suggest, too (first popular medium format camera for flexible roll film introduced by Kodak in 1888, cf. Wikipedia).

      1. Maybe a Digital Back for the Hasseblads with a EXMOR CMOS Medium Format Sensor (than the Hassy-Sony partnership would get really unbalanced, some “holy shit” Sensor Back from Sony vs. some rebranded, retextured cameras from Hassy

        1. Maybe a Digital Back for the Hasseblads with a EXMOR CMOS Medium Format Sensor (than the Hassy-Sony partnership would get really unbalanced, some “holy sh*t” Sensor Back from Sony vs. some rebranded, retextured cameras from Hass

          1. Ha-ha, in this case all that Sony-Hassy erotic advetures will be really curious. Suddenly Hasselblad makes the stellar/lunar crap only and Sony goes to medium format and digital backs… who could just suspect it for lets say 10 years?

If it will happen I’ll eat my hat with salt and pepper!

  3. Have no reason to believe the rumor, but it suggests the possibility of a square sensor camera – please, please someone make a square sensor camera.

  4. BLACK MAGIC is eating everyone Lunch.

    Sony must be more competititive

If SONY – haha – They will never do it until everyone else did.

Again IF SONY made all their Camera’s with the
Highest Bandwidth throughput of the SD4.0 UHS2 – SDXC – see more below

    SHOOT VIDEO IN RAW –
We could use our Sony Alpha Camera All shoot in Raw
but Sony must use the new SD4.0 2 UHS@ row of pins SD Slots
for the new card shipped in just 60 days
All we need is 24 Frames per Second
The old A77 did 12 frames, but the SD throughput and buffer was terrible

    Question Which
SONY Camera will fully support the new
SD 4.0 Card New UHS2-Slot – 2 rows of pins – Which New Camera will to
use – UHS2 SD4.0 – What SONY Camera will handle the native UHS2
SD4.0 for highest Quick Buffer throughput? DP review says SD4.0
UHS2 UHS-II cards from Toshiba – Exceria Pro will be shipping by end
of OCT. Approx 3X read/write speeds over the fastest Sandisk cards
available today. BUT what camera can use their FULL throughtput bandwidth??
Other SD card manufactureres will follow with competititve option shortly.

    1. Sony A99 enginnered reduction of frames per second from the

      A77 achievements is terrible

SONY could have used the new SD4.0 UHS2 card slots 18 months ago.
The A99 would have been already to go

When Sony could achieve so much the choose to screw it up.

The new Sony MSI hot shoe is just Tragic for us all,

Sony MSI is so proprietary that nobody or 3rd party wants to even try it.

We here Sony wants 10 Million to allow flash makers to use it.
      What a Joke

SONY should open to up for anyone to use for free.

Flash lighting to too important to keep the highly proprietary MIS flash shoe
      hostage.

All Just so Sony can try to sell cheap poorly made flashes for the most
outrageous SONY profit margins, but SONY is damaging us users.

      1. You have a lot of questions, a lot of innuendos, but little in the way of meaninful information. The fact that there is no one company that makes the perfect machine for everyone does not seem to stop you from constantly flaming Sony. Nothing wrong with that, if that’s the way you want to spend your time. Just saying, it would be better if you had more useful things to say.

          1. +1 I second the motion.

‘e’ a letter of the alphabet, nothing more. It could represent ‘e’-gotistic
‘i’ might be a better choice because it is also a vowel, and can represent “i”diot
“e” should try and place head up the “a” and never return.
            What a waste of time.

        1. We are user advocates for positive change protecting our investment in Minolta Glass.

With Just this Bizarre Sony MIS hot shoe ALONE,
we have had to begin to put our
Camera gear investment budgets into other platforms.

Lets look at the SONY ttl on camera Flash stats alone
Source B&H Count Sony 3, Nikon 72 and Canon 69
Sorry of those harsh statistic Sony gives us
          Hurts your Feelings and Sensitivity,
but we have work to do.

If you ladies want Drink the Sony Cool Aid
Lift your skirts, aoak it in and clean yourself up.
It might help you protect your SONY jobs.

          best, e

          1. I am sure the average buyer will buy all 69 types of Canon flash units. Seriously.
So, e is really a syndicate of like minded critics intent on downplaying any product that Sony is undertaking that does not meet their vision of reality. Okay. It is fortunate, then, that people still use their Sony equipment for creative and productive purposes. From listening to your amalgam, one would think everything Sony created, being total failures, are suddenly useless.

    2. Black Magic can hardly eat their own lunch.
They can barely deliver the old cameras with the small sensor. By the time they will deliver the 4k camera, 8k will be the standard.

  5. So after hasselblad had the permission to glamorize conventional sony products, maybe Sony is now allowed to make a striped version of the H4D. 🙂 That would be just fair.

    1. For today standard the 4HD and all the MF bodies, are pretty much stripped down to begin with As features, they are pretty much the equivalent of an A37.
If Sony, but I doubt, would ever make a MF body, it would be impossible to make it worst than current MF offering.

I would think that on order to make a MF body, Sony does not have the lenses and would take too much work to design them. But seen the collaboration with Zeiss, this should not be a problem. The lenses already exists: they just need to rebadge and do a make over of the Contax 645 AF system Zeiss lenses. There should not be much work to do.

  6. While its a real stretch, I would love for this ‘mid frame/box’ camera to be something alike to the old waist level Hasselblad and Rollei 6×6 cameras. Something about the size of the Hasselblad SWC, preferably equipped with an oversized square sensor, NO built-in eye level viewfinder (EVF could be an external add-on like the RX1). Instead, it would have a large square LCD that hinged at the top, allowing the screen to swivel/flip between the back of the camera to the top of the camera (meaning the LCD could sit flush against the camera body with the screen facing back, like normal, or directly up, like waist level finders).

Make a Color and B&W model and I’ll buy both!

      1. I mean waist level camera. I only mention the SWC specifically as a suggested size. Since this camera would be digital and mirrorless, it’s overall shape could be more of a cube (like the SWC which lacks a mirrorbox).

        1. that would look a bit like black magic camera 😉 but i’m with you – that would be awesome. or if they just entered MF market by providing digital backs. currently all backs are CCD and very expensive, I’d love to have ‘cheaper’ CMOS back for my Hasselblad V.

  7. Admin: the picture shows “20x optical zoom” so either it’s a fake picture or you got the answer to the question you wrote about fixed lens.

      1. I’m a consumer and I don’t have five grand. But lots of people do (or can actually make good use of this machine). Hope it’s a great performer so that people who pay a grand get a great machine to use. Of course, even if it’s the perfect machine ‘e’ will find something wrong with it.

  8. Maybe its a 1″ Sensor like in the RX100 in a Pro-camcorder style. To me that would explain that mid-size sensor a.k.a. NOT aps-c but also not 2/3″ like in ENG-style cameras. Whats the downside of XAVC-S again compared to normal XAVC? would we get 10bit recording on that thing? seems interesting for 2.5K streetprice but not 5K…

    bring it!

      1. ugh, yes…now that you say it. 20x zoom on 1″ is very unlikely. so its a 2/3″ sensor at most. boring. the same featureset in the same package with a 1″ sensor and a 24-105mm equiv. constatn aperture zoom, that would be nice!
4k resolution from a tiny 1/2″ or 1/3″ sensor, meh :/ especially meh at that pricepoint.
or the same thing(at the same size as this) with e-mount and an aps-c sensor, like a mini FS700 in 4k. boom!

    1. Interesting, but delivering a nearly 4k/60p burst for half a second is still some way from a sustained film capture mode and it is not just the buffer which is the issue either.

      1. If it can capture 4k during half a second it means this camera just needs few more chips for $50 and it will successfully encode it and write to SD card. Expensiveness of 4k is fake – just a way to make money out of nothing.

        1. So why doesn’t Nikon spend $50 and make millions selling a 4K 60fps camera ? There must be a reason and I think it’s not possible today to have a cheap 4K 60fps camera for $250.

          1. 1. This is low-end low-cost camera, making it $50 more will make it non profitable. Low-end user doesn’t need 4K. At all.
            2. Conspiracy theory. Even if Nikon does not have they own high-end video cameras (to cannibalize), they still prefer not to offend high-end video camera markets of other brands. I guess Nikon heads own shares of Canon/Sony or simply they getting payed for not competing in video camera market 🙂
I think same happen with Sony. We all think that Sony want’s to dominate camera markets and going to destroy Canikon monopoly – in reality Sony camera division feels completely comfortable by not going too far and staying a “bit expensive but NOT Canikon” brand. (I know many people who prefer Samsung smart phone just because it is not Apple)

    1. 36mm x 36mm A-mount camera that was rumored long ago?
(you know – one that allows instant switching between horizontal and vertical modes as well as allows you to shoot 30x30mm squares out of the box)

      1. Have you ever kept an A-mount camera in your hands? If so, a quick look at how the contact points for the lens are positioned in the A-mount will tell you that 36×36 sensor is impossible with A-mount, as the lens contacts block the light path.

  9. I wonder if this is a single or tripple sensor camera….great friggin job SARS…you busted this wide open!

      1. Right, the BM Production Camera does all those things and also happens to be an ergonomic nightmare. Not good for run and gun, which this Sony camera will be good for.

  10. If not crippled properly, this new 4k Handycam will create a marketing nightmare for Sony Pro.

Sony has several pro HD products that are in this price area that will be hurt by this camera. Several PMWs and NXCAMs are going to take a sales hit.

So….how will Sony cripple this 4k Handycam? Are we back to no 24p or locked down shutter speeds in 4k?

I’m sure they will think of something.

        1. You need a $300 BM rig and a mic. monitors right on the back on its 5in screen uses SSD drives internally to record RAW. but yes its not a run and gun camera. You don’t need a crew though.

  11. Nah… to expensive for the mass. But 4K will sooner or later be included
with most of the still/video cameras I guess.
Or… do the mass really need it? Not before the mass also have 4K TV’s
and I guess that will take long time because I really don’t see the need vs.
what already 2K (full HD) gives. Time will tell.
Also broadcasting in 4K… not sure this will come very soon to the masses.

    1. there is no way currently to have mass 4k broadcast of anything. Not even fios could handle a bunch of 4k streams for TV. 4k is so far out its not funny. Its great here my movie world but I don’t see 4k tv accept maybe a few speciallty channels for a long time to come. 5 years before its even an option anywhere but japans one channel.

    1. There are many other advantage to 4K. First, you can crop to HD and do all kinds neat composition and movement that way. Second, you can stabilize in post by cropping to HD, and that will be very stabilized HD video even if the original 4K was shaky.

    2. Those who shoot weddings/events will have a great advantage with a 4k. If this does 60p as well, you’ll basically get 8mp of stills on the side. Think of no missed moments in events! A framegrab can even be printed as big as 11×14 if shot well!

Cropping will also not affect resolution on HDTV output and may even help in doing software stabilization. These are just a few of the benefits of 4k.

The penalty of course are basically 2. 1)higher storage requirements. 2) more cpu/GPU power, memory requirements. Those 2 will add up to the cost, and maybe time to render the videos. Cuda and OpenGL should enable GPU to assist in this processing.

Cheap 4k TV is still years away. But that is not a big issue of immediate concern. What is important is that the 4k bandwagon has started to move. I am hoping is that this is priced at U$3.5-4.5k. Wedding/events shooters usually gravitate to P3.5k on the price bracket.

3D was a dud because it really wasn’t that useful for many. But higher rez cams? That has a future.

  12. Sony is not going to release a medium format camera. That is nonsense. The medium format camera market is dying…Theres no money in it for them…Not going to happen…

    1. Think Different. It worked for Apple (with Jobs) and it seems to be working, to a more limited extent, with some of Sony’s new products. Besides, why not try to shake things up every once in a while.

      1. The death of medium format comes down to pure economics for a photographer. To invest on a medium format setup I am going to be spending at lot more money than if I invest in 35mm. The increase in file size and quality has pretty much caught up with medium format (there is very little need for larger than 35 MP cameras). With the current rate of technology advancing my brand new camera is going to be out of date in 2 years. That means I have to pay it off in 2 years and then buy a new camera. It is far easier to do that with cheaper but still extremely good 35mm camera than with medium format. Plus if current medium format camera are far behind in high ISO quality. So if I want to shoot in low light I need a good 35mm camera as well…So you see more and more medium format camera are become an anachronism…In 5 year they will have faded away…

        1. ” To invest on a medium format setup I am going to be spending at lot more money than if I invest in 35mm”
          – To invest on a 35mm setup I am going to be spending at lot more money than if I invest in a high quality compact
…and all of the other arguments out there.

        2. Also – if Sony would make a MF camera using current tech they got in semiconductiors – it’d offer significantly better IQ on high ISOs than any 35mm camera on a market.

    2. I just bought a conversion back to use my NEX 7 on my 4×5 in studio. Mostly because its fun but I still use my Leaf mostly. but yeah those companies are trying hard to solve a problem.

  13. And there is one thing that has net been spotted (or at lest mentioned on comments). It is sad on top: Exmor R. Which means two things:
-it has 1 inch image sensor which doesn’t seem right considering size of the device
-we might have the biggest (after RX100MK2) BSI sensor.

    Any ideas guys?

  14. “Mid-frame” exists. For many years the Canon 1d series was aps-h. It had a 1.3x crop factor. For sports, action and wildlife, this was a great middle ground between full frame DoF an light gathering and the additional reach at full resolution of aps-c (the target market of the 1d).

This 4k videocamera makes sense. Great for prosumers, event videographers and ENG. It’s the natural evolution of the former miniDV/ hdv / avchd topend handycam line.

  15. This could help…

San Jose, CA, 17 de Abril de 2013 — Today Aptina announced a new 14 Megapixel (MP) CMOS image sensor for digital cameras, the AR1411HS, providing a unique imaging solution in the increasingly popular 1-inch format. By merging spectacular image quality with extremely fast frame rates, Aptina is enabling top consumer camera makers to develop the next generation of mirrorless, bridge, high-end compact, and broadcast digital video cameras. This sensor, which has attracted great interest from market-leading mirrorless camera makers, extends Aptina’s high-performance camera sensor product line that was introduced with the 10 MP AR1011HS in 2012.

The AR1411HS image sensor competes at the highest level with an ultra-sensitive pixel, using Aptina™ DR-Pix™ technology to achieve superior image quality in both low-lit and brightly-lit scenes. This is combined with the ability to output the full 14MP resolution at up to 80 frames per second (fps) for an amazing 1.1 gigapixels/sec, 40 percent faster than its 10MP predecessor. The high-speed readout gives the sensor the capability of providing full 4K video at 60fps, in either the Quad HD (3840H x 2160V) or the wider Digital Cinema 4K format (4096H x 2160V), and a blazingly fast 120fps 1080p video mode, enabling slow-motion video capture without loss of resolution. This speed also gives the user the unique capability of grabbing full 14MP resolution still images without interrupting a super-sharp, oversampled 1080p HD video stream. “The AR1411HS image sensor delivers superior image quality and the ability to capture still shots and video very fast, in virtually any environment,” said Sandor Barna, Vice President and General Manager of Aptina’s Consumer Camera business. “This 1-inch sensor effectively bridges the performance and price gap between the smaller 1/2.3-inch sensors commonly used in compact digital still cameras and the larger APS-C and full-frame sensors that are used in DSLR cameras. Based on the initial success we are seeing in high quality HD-video enabled mirrorless cameras and strong interest from several top camera companies that have sampled the image sensor, we believe the AR1411HS is a game-changer.”

    Availability
Aptina’s AR1411HS image sensor is currently in mass production
