  1. I only received the 3S RX1 grip/baseplate a couple of hours ago, and I would not categorize it as huge at all. It is very comfortable, attractive, well-made, and reasonably light for what it is.

  2. from the looks of the website and my inability to read japanese it is going to be 9,800Yen? so thats still around $100

    1. I think the RRS grip is far uglier than this one. RRS appeals to an American audience that appears to appreciate things from a robotic/industrial aesthetic that appears to have a Bauhaus incentive but fails because it wants more robocop and less BMW.

This Japanese solution is merely functional and it doesn’t try too hard to assimilate itself with the original design (the texture on the grip)

I reckon the designers went for the square shape and not the round one as to distance themselves from the Leica (same principle) design of grips for their M cameras.

    2. That’s an excellent design. Specifically because it is component based. Just use the bottom plate, or add the other pieces when needed. Bravo RRS!

Now, too bad that grip portion couldn’t hold extra battery, or at least memory cards.

Really sweet piece of kit though. Enjoy!

    1. Not as much as the RRS grip or some other wooden grips seen around. This one, I would say, is by far the most simplistic choice and , as proven by the Leica designs, useful enough as to not be detrimental to the camera’s original size advantage.

      1. I also wish Ferraris would support a 1ton cargo bed on the back of their cars because I wish to transport rice from China in style.

  3. Well, this camera is such a beaty that everything you add to it wont make it look any better. But who cares if you really need more grip?

    1. This is the way of thinking. The Gariz case solution is probably another way to go about it in increasing grip. It is the only case I know of that seamlessly has a great design with the unobstructed battery compartment door compared to other leather half cases.

      1. I agree I just got two of them for both my nex-6 cameras. I could have gotten two other high quality cases for less than the price of one gariz case but the gariz was more convenient.

  4. People buying such ugly crab seemingly have only one hand… 🙂

To be honest. Attaching this grip to the RX1 is like attaching a lambskin cover onto a Ferrari seat… 🙂

  5. These ugly grips don’t deserve any other colour than purple plastic and as a NEXuser I’d like to recommend something else much more useful as a Gorillapod Micro 800.

  6. I guess to each their own. I completely agree that the RX1 is a thing of beauty in it’s native form. But the design simply isn’t practical (for me at least) when I go out and shoot 400-500 shots in a day in conditions where I bump into people, etc. In some of those places 90% of the people earn far less in a year than the RX1 costs, so I don’t really care to preserve the beauty of the RX1. It’s a tool. Also, I don’t use neck straps, but the Carry Speed sling strap, and coupled with RRS Mini-Clamp the Arca-Swiss plate on this mount is a great combo to hold the camera on me all day. No matter what people say, this is not a pocketable camera – by the time you mount the lens hood and EVF it grows very quickly.

    1. Yeah, my original A850 which I’d always assumed I bought on death’s doorstep only turned out to have 21,191 actuations, and the other A850 I picked up for $800 (and assumed I should use sparingly because it might be at the end of its life) turned out to only have 2,030! I can go for many more years with these cams!

    2. I do not think it is accurate, due to the fact that the image number on my file is currently DSC01947. And it resetted after DSC09999. that makes around 12000 photos. This counter tool showed 19403 images which means it added 7457 shots. (i just checked NEX7 counts up even though you delete photos.)

      1. The tool is correct (I am the author). It shows shutter actuations, not images taken.
For any SLT/NEX multiexposure modes count for multiple shutter actuations.
If you are not using the electronic front curtain shutter then each image you produce makes one extra shutter actuation.
For example, a panorama can take from 30 to 50 shutter actuations. Check it for yourself, if you do not believe me.
If you fire without a lens, it counts as well, even if without a card.
EACH time the shutter fires, the count goes up.

          1. to Bman:

            1.
I tested the tool on multiple photos taken on my A900 with FW 2.0 and it works perfectly there. My JPEG file number matches the number of shutter actuations (modulo 10,000 when the file number wraps around). I only do JPEGs and I use exposure bracketing.

            2.
However, on my A77 with FW 1.06 I get results that appear to be incorrect and inconsistent.
Below are the results from the camera – again, I only do JPEG, no panoramas, no WB bracketing. I do use exposure bracketing though.

            File name: Reported count: Difference:
            DSC02500.JPG 521 -1979
            DSC03208.JPG 1235 -1973
            DSC03502.JPG 1535 -1967
            DSC04100.JPG 2133 -1967

The only possible mechanism of this discrepancy between the number on the file being five times the reported number of actuations I can think of is if WB bracketing was used and the camera would generate 5 JPEG files for each shutter activation. But I believe that A77 generates 3 files if WB bracketing is used.

Anybody tested the tool on their A77 with V1.06 of FW?

        1. Thank you SO much BMan 🙂

This tool is fantastic; it allows me to only buy “low shutter actuation” SONY DSLR cameras (used) for many years to come! I just bought an A900 for $1179 from the B&H Photo used department, and found that it only had 4789 shutter actuations!!! I shouted out in excitement, and proceeded to squeal like a giddy schoolgirl for like 20 minutes.

Needless to say, I’ve now put more than half that many actuations onto it in the week that I’ve owned it, and I expect to be at 8000 by the end of the month. That’s wedding photography for ya!

I really lucked out. But I kind of knew it when I opened the box – the camera’s tripod socket area still smelled like “new rubber”.

In the future, the next time I have to buy an A900 or A850, I’ll simply search for them on eBay, and ask the seller to send me a jpg that’s been shot with the camera recently (of a recent newspaper or something!). Never again will I bother with buying a camera near the end of its life.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙂

  7. Not accurate, no way my a99 has 14000 shots after 4 months. maybe 4000.
Ive used the card on lots of cameras, wonder if its counting that too.

Anyone know what the shutter life is on a sony a99?

      1. Bman, thanks for the tool, it’s really handy, I have question for you, what about in video mode, if it does 24 fps, does it mean the shutter count will jump up 24 counts every second I do video?

      2. 1.
I tested the tool on multiple photos taken on my A900 with FW 2.0 and it works perfectly there. My JPEG file number matches the number of shutter actuations (modulo 10,000 when the file number wraps around). I only do JPEGs and I use exposure bracketing.

  8. Maybe it’s counting just the number of shutter actuations (including those in multi-frame modes) and not just the number of images produced?

  9. Admin, the “tool” can’t be downloaded. If you’re talking about the site you either upload a file or link it. It uses “exiftool” and a set of tags to read and calculate the shutter count. Quite ignorant from your side…

    1. Calling the guy who made a minor mistake while trying to help “ignorant”…why don’t you just f*** off his site?

  10. From the 50mm f/1.8 E-mount lens review:
    “Auto focus is very fast”

Ehr, not really. Excellent lens but focussing is not that fast in my experience.

  11. more very simple things that Sony doesn’t do at all or does badly….why would they choose to not have a menu item that tells the shutter count….just more examples of silly/poor Sony choices in engineering, design, software and hardware implementation.

  12. The shutter tool can’t be accurate imho.
It states my A77 shutter is under 10K which is really unusual as I do lots of timelapses and I’m very snap happy in general. Just does not make sense.

  13. this does not work on my sony nex 5t. kind of pisses me off because I just bought it used and want to know how much it has been used. it said 0 on the counter tool and I have pictures on my camera that I took already
