The Franken-NEX-7n :)

The NEX-7n is due for a release (maybe in May?). Meantime SAR reader “lhar Gil” (website: www.clickerbug.com) tried to imagine the NEX-7n Frankencamera and sent me this message with picture: “I personally cannot wait for the nex-7n. aside from the sensor improvements, processing, etc., i am also particularly excited about the physical improvements the 7n will bring to the table namely, new hotshoe, mode dial and wifi..so i decided to do a mashup of the nex-6, nex-7, rx-1 and a99 to create a franken-nex-7n as i would have designed it if i were a sony engineer. what do you think about it? close enough? 🙂”

I will take the chance to remind you some unconfirmed NEX-7n specs. And if some designer has some time to waste why not design and send me the new NEX Full Frame camera too? 🙂

– New 24 Megapixel APS-C sensor with 1/2 stop improvement and increased dynamic range
– 3, 8 Million dot EVF
– touchscreen
– Hybrid Contrast and Phase Detection AF
– Tri Navi design reviewed
– Focus Peaking will be much improved with choice of colors
– Wifi, but no GPS on board.
– Same size and form factor of the current NEX-7 but with a minor redesign

For Sources: Again, thanks to all sources for helping me out. I may ask them if they can tell me some more bits about the other new stuff like E-mount lenses and other cameras. Thanks 🙂

For Readers: Spread the news folks. Exciting time is coming and you may subscribe the RSS feed (Click here) and Twitter (Click here) stream and the Facebook fan page (Click here) in order to not miss any news!

  1. I would like them to place the mode dial on the left navigation dial and an exposure compensation on the right navigation dial.

    1. +1. The mode dial takes the nice sleek design away from it. Sony could do like Nikon and implement a mode change with a press-and-hold + turn dial combo in their cameras. Simple and effective.

Damn, if the mode dial does come in with the new 7n, I can imagine the original 7s to be desirable just for their design because the new one looks like s$%t.

      1. I would suggest for Sony to implement MENU hold + FOCUS RING combo for changing shooting modes, this can be added to already avaliable models!

  2. The NEX 7, was (is) a great camera, a step in the future, but with some “children desis”, and now a lot of photo enthusiasts are eager to see improved, renewed version of such a gut camera, hopefully with new superb lenses.

So please SONY don’t upset us, we actually love you and ready to spend our hard earned cash for your masterpieces.

  3. I think the new NEX 7N look more bad ass than the NEX-7, a combine with NEX-6 + NEX-7 = NEX-7N. The Tri-Navi got improve more so that the NEX-7 have more option to set up way to control the camera.
I hope they stole more feature from A99, I still hoping if they have Dual AF.

  4. GPS – i wouldnt be surprised since this is the pro crop cam
180 degree articulating screen (ala 3n)

Im really expecting what you have said above and another special feature to surprise us. Its going to be very special so we can make a distinction between the 6 and 7.

Dont know… GPS, dual card, free wifi apps, hss flash trigger, voice recognition. Something that will make it worth 20%-25% the price of a Nex6

    1. “180 degree articulating screen (ala 3n)”

The problem is that the EVF gets in the way on the NEX-6/7.

They would have to design a different hinge mechanism to the 3N.

  5. Hopefully they do not skip one of the dials to please a mode dial….

Eliminate the sensor prob, enable the built-in flash to be able to wireless trigger flashes, place the movie button elsewere and add 120 or 240fps video capability.

    1. What’s wrong with a Mode dial?? I don’t understand how additional controls can be unwanted…

Actually I would agree with JC: Add both Mode dial and Exposure Compensation dial on top of the two upper tri-navi dials. 🙂

  6. I will be pay attention if it has good corner performance with wider RF lenses, and more focus peaking options.

  7. Too little – too late.

I already gave up on the nex series and sold all my lenses. I cannot afford changing photo gear every year being a free beta tester. The main reason was such advanced camera not having remote port – something other cameras has from many years!!

Now I have a99 and rx100 and I’m happy with them.

    1. No, 1/2 stop improvement will not even be visible. It will be practically insignificant. That said, if the AA filter is removed, 1/2 stop “improvement” is likely. It could also result in a higher than 100 base ISO.

      1. There’s a widespread myth that thinks removing the AA filter does anything meaningful for the efficiency in capturing photons. But it doesn’t. Just compare the D5200 vs D7100 or K5-II vs K5-IIs in terms of noise. Very much within margin of measuring error, not even close to 1/3 EV.

Second, the NEX 7 already has one of the lightest AA filters. Just look at the detail in the Dpreview studio shots from the 7 and D7100.

        1. The 7100 kicks the 7’s ass. It even compares well against the 99 until the iso climbs. To my eye the 7 at 800 compares to the 7100 at 3200 (I think the spotted feather next to the watch in the dpreview shots shows this well). That is more than a mere half stop.

Sony’s strength is the electronics not the glass. They should rule on the sensor, not lag behind Nikon. I am hoping that the 1/2 stop is wrong and Sony really nails the sensor. Maybe that is why the 7n announcement was delayed slightly? One can only hope.

          1. What are you babbling about? My commment about the 7 vs D7100 was in reference to detail. Now check again.

As for noise, the D7100 indeed does a better job in overall terms, but keep in that the NEX ISO’s are understated too. And at least the NEX sensor doesn’t suffer from shadow banding (even some of the official Nikon samples reveal it), which the Toshiba sensor in the Nikon does, both in stills and video. Which makes those shadows and the DR numbers suddenly a lot less… useful in the real world, outside nicely lit studios.

  8. What about power zoom rocker? I would guess than all new NEXes from now will have it. IMHO it’s a function that doesn’t distrub if you do not need it. But it can be very useful for some.

  9. I hope it would have C1,C2,C3 configurable settings.
This has been amazing useful on my RX1, it has reduced menu hunting by 90%.

  10. Frankly, I desperately hope Sony is not using the 24mp sensor. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE high resolution. But it sucks ass with any wide lenses, even Sony’s own 10-18mm F/4 has horrible color shift in the periphery (which they fake a fix for in the RAW files, which is something of a double-sin.)

I am hoping my theory is correct: they are using the new 20mp sensor, same as a58 with the same non-problematic microlens layout from the NEX-6/NEX-5R. It would be a good compromise to still be fairly high resolution while having fewer corner problems.

    1. > even Sony’s own 10-18mm F/4 has horrible color shift in the periphery (which they fake a fix for in the RAW files,
Hm… unexpected, but not surprising. I would like to see it. Proof link?

  11. Frankly,

I hope wifi feature won’t be available on NEX-7 and if yes, that mini WLAN card can be desactivated unlike NEX-5R & NEX-6. I don’t want it to consume the battery for something that I would probably never use.
GPS is much more usefull… (only if it can be disable to save battery)

Anyway the other supposed specs looks good.

  12. Remote port (!!!) . This is the most awaited feature.
Till now I was telling “get lost sony” because if lack of it in nex3, nex5, nex7, nex6.

  13. Looks like a good update and hope that the Sensor and processing engine gets a tweak up. Like the free bundled Wi-fi (unlike Nikon that charges $$/££ on top) and it would be nice to have GPS bundled in as well.

  14. I wished they would implement an android based camera with a test driven app shop for Sony cameras. A good open source framework with a good documented API for app development. If you want to sell cameras you have to increase the joy of use to make photos. A flip screen like Canon G12. Touchscreen …? Yes! A lot more mid price lenses! A metabones like adapter for a-mount lenses. Water resistant? Yes. Less noise for high iso. A good non plastic 16-45mm f/2.8 kit lens. An extra compact power flash… an in build control unit for external flesh. A VSCO filters app. A Photo Booth app. A Hippstamatic app. … and a lot more!

    1. A camera which you can connect to your Android phone would be enough to me. I would certainly not like a camera which has to be charged every other day. Besides, the currect capabilities are enough for me in 99% of the usecases. For the 1%, allow for tethering with a laptop/smartphone, and I’m happy.

      1. I understand your point. I think camera manufacturers can learn a lot from smart phone manufacturers. I you see smart phone natives you understand what I mean. The current phones can have 8mp sensors… See here: http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2193262/hipstamatic-plans-launch-of-foundation-for-photojournalism
        and here: http://storyboard.tumblr.com/post/27479079539/capturing-libya-through-a-hipstamatic-lens-to
Old manufacturers have to open their mind to go forward….

    2. I just dun understand why people want a camera to be built like a smart phone. Why dun go to apple or Samsung and ask them to put an apsc sensor on their cell phone and all your problem solved.

      1. You misunderstood. I want innovation as in the smart phone sector. I want extendable features. I want an user centered experience with professional cameras.

    3. Haha, if Sony would implement Android I would surely wait for an Apple iCam before I would even consider buying it. Android just sucks…

      1. Useless comment… It seems to me you have nothing to do with serious software development. You*re an apple fanboy without arguments & visions?

        1. I am sure he probably thinks the ipod delivers the best sound in the world as well. I don’t get apple fan boys with there expensive devices and 2 cent headphones. All apple does is wait for someone to make something cool then they make improvements on someone’s idea and then put a patent on it then sue you for something they did not come up with.

  15. The one thing that you can bank on, being that it’s a sony product, is it will be lacking at least 2-3 common sense, “how could they not put that in” features. That’s just how they operate.

  16. Why is the “multi interface shoe” listed as a “physical improvement”?

How is requiring adapters for smart radio slaves a “physical improvement”? That’s a compromise.

Any mention of fixing the wireless flash delay on this?

    1. Move on.
What is done was done. There is nothing we or Sony can do. They will piss off more ppl if they change it back to iISO now.
Old equipment will require adaptors. New or future develop equipment will fit the new shoe. It’s that simple.
Wireless flash delay is another story, I think is not directly related to the new shoe; a renew in software algorithm may solve the issue.

      1. Friend, I understand all that. But it doesn’t answer my question… How is it an upgrade?

I understand the change, and the implications completely. I’m even forced to accept the change.

But lets not lie about it and call it an “upgrade”. It is a downgrade in every way. A major, needless, self serving downgrade that Sony forced upon their users. If Sony expects me to live with it, fine. But I expect them to live with me exposing the truth about the change, rather than calling pigs with lipstick an upgrade.

No more 3rd party support. No more native smart functions. How is that an upgrade?

  17. Fully-articulated screen please. It should be able to flip over and be locked face-in, like my A65.

My poor NEX-7 display is showing a lot of wear and tear and I don’t use it all that much, so I’d much rather hide it away and keep doing 90% of my shooting through the EVF.

  18. Exactly +1 if Blackmagic is able make pocet cam ,Sony should do it us well .
Raw video ,size of sensor can be the same , better low light performance , more dynamic range , and photo mode . Is that not easy to hold me to change system ?

  19. Surely, I would’ve thought that the performance of the new sensor at high ISO’s would have to match that of the ‘6, albeit at 24MP, in terms of noise. That would make me happy, along with better tonal performance, and a quiet shutter; no noisier than Fuji’s X-Pro1, which, for me, remains a tasty option if Sony don’t do something decent in these aspects with the new camera. Heck! If Canon manage it with the 5DIII in quiet mode, with a wacking-great FF shutter/mirror combo, why not Sony in the NEX?

As for focus peaking? Is it beyond Sony to produce some kind of colour/contrast peaking, wherein any highlight of any colour is represented by it’s chromatic/tonal opposite? It certainly would put an end to the need to switch Focus Peaking colours…
