Wonder why?
People, BH gets 10,000 preorders. . . . They’ll be the very last shop to send you new gears.
I am waiting for RX1 🙁 too long
If you don’t like Sony, get out of here!
O_o
wtf Mitsu??? O_o
If he doesn’t like Sony, he would not order an RX1.
lolol .. what an idiot..
Are you sure that’s available for shipping and not pre-order?
No shipping today, preorder neither, only “Notify When in Stock” plus this really promising photo: http://static.bhphoto.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_271593.jpg
I heard that the VG900 will be available late October, early November. So the availability date on BH might be when they accept pre-order.
It’s funny when Sony puts 1,200 zone metering considering its metering sensor is the image sensor…
its not the image sensor as the shutter is closed when metering.
No it’s not closed. Look down at the sensor through the mirror, the shutter is open, the curtain completes the exposure when you press the shutter. With electronic shutter off you will hear the shutter close and then the two curtain travel within the specified shutter speed.
It could very well meter using 1200 ‘zones’. It would come down to software, I am sure it isn’t metering all 24 million dots simultaneously as it would be too processor intensive, that and the accuracy would probably go way off with lots of false readings etc, especially in lower light. It would likely be reading clusters of pixels and averaging them for the metering purposes.
Here we go.
Sony needs to take its time
I canceled my order for the Nikon 800E (just came back into stock)while the problem with the AF if figured out.
Sony is better off if the a99 hits the market cleanly without problems.
Yep. After issues both: Canon and Nikon got Sony hardly can afford any mistake with this release. But we’ll see how it goes.
Yes, I really hope that the Sony A99 will perform very well without problems, too. I’m looking to buy a FF DSLR for the first time to complement my mu43 system. I was going to get the D800, but I want to use the A99 first.
Looks like VG900 is ready to go.
At least one Canadian retailer is taking regular orders. The pre-order status disappeared today.
No one has said that Sony have got the final release firmware for the A99, yet it is going to market.
Doesn’t this look just like what happened with the A65/77 and we’re STILL waiting for Sony to sort out the Jpeg and ISO issues.
Sony do not appear to have learned lessons. Earn a reputation for poor support and it will stick with you. Many people will shy away from this A99 because they can’t trust Sony to support them and get it right, especially if it’s not right to start with.
Sony may sell the most sensors…pity they allow others to get the best out of them.
I started a thread on this at Dyxum the other day. I guess Sony fulfills their online preorders first, high volume and flagship stores second, then big-box distributers third, and then everything else. My guess is B&H got a date after Sony’s November 2 OR they ran out of their preorder allocation and November 9 is the second wave.
I guess you’re right. Most probably first wave on arrival is already sold out. So they’re taking orders for second wave with a fair extimation on delivery.
I am going to call and follow up later today, just to feel better about it. I’d like to have it in my hands today, but ideally it wouldn’t be a surprise either. Our couriers have a reputation of ignoring delivery requirements.
I can’t believe the markup Sony has put on this camera for England. In the US it is $2800 = £1732 in the UK it is £2750 that’t over £1000 ($1600) more…. plane and simply its a rip off for us in the UK!!
You could fly to the US and buy one and still save money. You’d lose a good 16 hours of your life, at minimum, but you’d still save money. If you made it an interesting trip, you could have photographic proof of the second half.
Only if the customs officer doesn’t catch you.
Fly to the US. Buy the camera over the counter. Open the box, use the camera, ‘lose’ the box and post the manuals, etc back to your home. Fly home with the camera in your hand luggage.
The UK customs people have more to worry about than a few quid in tax.
Anyone know if the video framerates are regionb based?
Don’t keep your camera bag too clean………
About 20 years ago I was on assignment working in Egypt and purchase a big new Tamrac bag at home in the US just prior to going. I was there in North Africa for about three weeks ,and when I came back into US customs in New York I got stopped, because the agent thought my gear looked to new so I must have purchased it out of the country…………What saved me was I still had the bag receipt in the bag and a repair ticket for a Minolta lens that I kept with the lens in the bag also.
nowadays I carry documentation for everything.
Yes, frame rates are region locked for the A99!
Dont forget VAT is included in the price in the UK, which brings the non taxed price down to L2300. I know the US has import tax breaks from item made in China, which the UK may not have. Assuming the camera is made in China and the UK does not have the same import tax breaks, that would bring the items even closer in price. Also, with the smaller population the costs go up. With the higher fuel costs, the costs go up. And if I am not mistaken, much of the EU requires a longer warranty period, which would cause the cost to go up as well (I know the UK is not part of the EU, but many of the laws are shared or are similar, again from my understanding).
So a good 25% of the cost difference is known to be more governmental than corporate, while much of the remainder is probably also governmental as well as economical. Currency conversion is not the end all, be all of cost parity. If Sony were to sell the camera at exactly the same end user price, they would probably take a loss.
And lastly, US pricing does not include sales tax, which is either charged at purchase, or is to be filed with the local state after purchase in the states which collect sales tax. Some states charge near 10%, so the U.S. cost could be as high as L1900 when all is said and done.
The UK has been part of the EU since 1976.
If Amazon (or another retailer) were able and willing to ship to you directly from the US you can pay the value added tax (VAT) yourself (20%).
I don’t believe that there is any import tariff or excise duty payable on imports from the US, only VAT.
I am assuming the camera is going to be made in Japan (like the A900) or Malaysia (like the A77).
The price in England is indeed strange:
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsi-body/slt-a99v
http://www.sony.no/product/dsi-body/slt-a99v
The price in Norway equals £2367. Both prices are
including VAT. We have 25% VAT compared to 20% in England.
And for a pro camera (which is supposed to last more than
five years) we can complain about production faults for
five years (Not sure what the correct english terms are,
but you probably understand what I mean. If you take a
million pictures and the shutter stops working, you can’t
complain even if the camera is just one year, but if a
nicely handled and not heavily used camera stops working
after four years you might have a good case).
So I can’t understand why the official Sony price is higher
in England than in Norway.
BH is just now taking pre orders. Not shipping.
I thought they were for awhile? Just saying since B&H was the place I hit to preorder the moment I heard the official release date from Andrea a few weeks ago.
How many stops of dynamic range does the vg-900 have?
more then the a99 probably. 🙂
Great!Sony
Admin,
Do you know the delay does relate to huge protest problem at China against any japanese(sony china factories)? So far, Canon and Panasonic (if not mistaken) have suspended their each 3 factories due to the people damaged their equipment, and others until further notice.
Chinese are the damm funny people in the world about the island issue! 😀 By right sport athlelic and business should not conflict in any politic issue, but in reality it does not! 😀
I guess you would have to study confusionism and Daoism and maybe been on the recieving end of Japanese occupation where 3.7 Million Chinese where killed by the Japanese.
or the receiving end of British and western imperialism and occupation in the 1840’s
Ironic the first available Full Frame Sony in four years is going to be a video camera. Oh Sony… where oh where have you stranded the Stills Togs that supported you. You’re like a bad cheating girlfriend.
“Bitch stole my fish”… See what I mean on Google Images.
Does anyone here have the VG900 on preorder?
I placed my pre-order for an a99 at Adorama. Adorama has the exact same price for an a99 as B&H Photo and Amazon, but Adorama has a bundle with a free memory card and camera bag that might be useful. (I’m not sure if the free camera bag will be too small for the camera and my lens, but hey, it’s free.)
Of course I’ll cancel the order if there are any show-stopping problems before it starts shipping in November, so I hope the release goes smoothly.
Can anyone confirm that the A99 and VG900 are made in Japan and not Thailand?
You see, people are so fast to critizice the big brands, just to, as always, end up far behind them… This is the first flaw, and the little toy is not even out… You really have to think twice before talking… Gooooooo Sony…
Actually BLOWN AWAY by the price of the A99 here in Australia! The camera has an RRP through Sony of $2999. That mightn’t sound too great to the rest of you, but as a point of comparison –
Sony A77 $1899
Nikon D600 $2600
Nikon D800 $3800
Canon 5D MkII $2400
Canon 5D MkIII $3800
Granted these aren’t anybodies ‘best prices’, but that makes the A99 only $400 more than the D600. $800 less than the D800 and MkIII and only $1100 more than the A77 (which is admittedly ridiculously overpriced here). As another point of comparison, the RX100 is $650 in the US, here it is $800. $150 more on a $650 camera. The A99 is $2800 in the US and $3000 here, $200 more on a $2800 camera.
Last comparison, the Sony Centre closest to me had an A850 on ‘super special’ a few weeks ago, remembering this was a $2000 US camera 3 years ago…. Super Special price? $3500!
Sounds like they made a mistake with the A99 pricing. I guess they will correct it before it ships.
B&H is NOT selling the VG900 today (Sept 27th) as previously announced……the estimated shipping date is Nov.23,2012.
Sony Store USA says “Accepting Pre-orders
Estimated ship date: 11/23/2012”
Just received email from B&H and they contacted Sony on ETA for the VG900 and Sony replied 11/1.
B&H sent me a notice saying mine has been shipped already…
Was that a VG900 or the A99?
