Hot! First Hasselblad design of a new A-mount FF(?) camera!

What you see here on top is the design of the future Hasselblad A-mount camera. There is no info yet whether this camera will be DSLR (optical viewfinder) or SLT (electronic viewfinder). Nor do we have an info about the sensor size although my high guess is on FF sensor size. All we know is that Hasselblad confirmed that “new products for DSLR and compact camera segments” are coming soon.

Until now Hasselblad only made digital Medium Format cameras with optical viewfinders like the [shoplink 14314 ebay]Hasselblad H series (to see here on eBay)[/shoplink]. But I guess Hasselblad will rely on the Sony SLT technology and “only” add their own design on this. The right question may be…will it be based on the new A99 or on the next to come A1 (36MPx?) FF camera? If you are visiting Photokina try to squeeze out some info from the Hasselblad managers. Offer them a couple of Weizenbiers and they will talk!

    1. A restyled A99, probably several times the price of the original and with mostly Sony and Minolta lenses to mount on it. Sounds economically unwise.

      1. Restyled A99 a la Pentax K-01. A DSLR with the prism cut off and a DSLR mount.
I am afraid it will sink even more than the K-01 (you can have a K-01 very cheap now, only some six months after its release)

          1. There are many here that are afraid of Sony’s different approach. It could be good or bad, but they fear the change. The Germans call it shadenfreude.

          2. If it’s a restyled NEX-7, then I know just about everything about it short of the price tag – and knowing a little about Hasselblad, I can guarantee you this camera (and its Hasselblad lenses) won’t be cheaper than the original … quite the contrary.

          3. Beachrider, you don’t know what schadenfreude means. Literally, it’s damage-joy, but the real meaning is “taking joy from seeing bad things happen to people (teams, companies etc.) that you don’t like. If, say, a team from the English second division in football beat a team from Premier League that you “hate”, then you would most likely feel damage-joy – especially if someone you knew was a fan of that PL team.

    2. No, I’m not buying a Hazzie over a Sony for 3x the price.
No, I’m not getting teary-eyed lusting for this over an A99.
But I am THRILLED to see the partnership and more “game” for the Alpha lenses.

People, remember that a solid high-end base is essential to the success of the system. This is a significant step.

    1. Yeah times are really hard when a company wants to expand their business to new markets! That’s why you will most likely never own a business of your own! Idiot

      1. The market that will pay $10,000 for an A99 with a different body or $6500 for an NEX-7 with a different body? Now THAT is idiotic.

      2. Hassie might be able to adapt multi-vendor image processing from Nikon and other’s providers. Also recall that this is the entry device, Hassie might be planning more specialized units.

  1. I think they’re (Hasselblad) not going to make anything, it’ll just be a rebadged a99 or something like that, which fine by me. I won’t buy, but if it helps A mount, go ahead.

  2. Just like Leica with Panasonic, now we have Hasselblad with Sony…not sure if it will be good, but if Hasselblad starts making lenses for Sony, then it will be interesting!

      1. Hazzie have been a maker of camera bodies, and ordered/specified lenses that have been designed and produced by others.
Interesting to see what ‘value-add’ they will make on the underlying Sony products.

(I think the H system uses/used AF module from Maxxum 9 and lenses was Cosina IIRC)

        So there is a history…

      2. Hasselblad broke up with Zeiss a little decade ago. Everything Hasselblad since then (also lenses) has been rebadged Fujifilm … and now rebadged Sony.

        This is stupid.

  3. If this can happen, then a Titanium 43mp a900 rework is not out of line.

    Which would you rather have?
    a909Ti or a Hassony?
    _______

When did camera makers decide to use the Auto Industry Model?

    Accura fancy Honda
    Infinity fancy Nissan
    Cadillac fancy Chevy
    Lincoln fancy Ford

Pigs and Lipstick… Pigs and Lipstick… Bitchin’ Camaro!

    1. This could be a poem.

Best post I read all day. But.. If this happens I will buy this camera. Wanted a Hassleblad since I was kid. Now I just have to find the subject I have been wanting to shoot… The Hasslehoff.

  4. looks like Sony is on fire these days, so many news about the company’s recent developments/partnerships/announcements. with all these can you still sleep @admin? 🙂

  5. Nice and all, but by judging the Nex-7 “Blad”, this will be out of touch by most mortals. Though it’s definitely good to see lots of things rolling from Sony this year. Kazuo Hirai’s effect maybe?

  6. True…any push towards A and E mount is good. However, I think this will be another novelty item that will be focused on the luxury of the shell and not so much about anything else inside it.

So, if you wish to pay x3/x4 for this to have the H logo on the grip…sure thing, its yours.

Otherwise, like one post above, I believe this will be a rebranded a99 too.

Well, why not? Vladimir Rushkupotski needs more cameras made of gold, platinum and mahogany to go with his new Bentley.

  7. Uuuuuuuuuuuugly! Aaaaaaaah!!!! 🙁 Horribble. Disgusting…Please not!

What happend to Hasselblad? Where ist the clear, nordic style?

  8. A99 or A77 with over price shell….. Wonderful!

so judge by the price for the NEX-7 (H) the A99 (H) would be.. say 9000 Euros…

  9. Why are people complaining so much about this partnership? This is exactly what Sony needs to gain respect and credibility from pro users!

I just hope this partnership means a MF camera from Sony soon! 🙂

  10. Holy cannoli. Not that I expect to have the money soon for this, but I love the idea of a wide range of (FF!) a-mount cameras. Makes the investment in my lenses worthwile(r).

  11. I die laughing every time an announcement like this is made and all the trolls come tumbling after to go on the hate before even seeing – let alone holding – one of these new creations in their hands.

Yeah, Hasselblad has no idea what they are doing – just like Zeiss.

Get a life! Go outside and take some pictures or something. Seriously, it’s pathetic how many people come to these message boards and just make one know-it-all cynical comment after another.

It’s really, really sad to see.

If, when I get a chance to check out this camera, it turns out to be worth the investment I will buy it when it is within budget to do so. Until then I’ll hold my tongue about how good/bad the camera actually is.

  12. I think I get Sony’s strategy. They aim for at least as big share of the digital camera market as Canon and Nikon. But until now the Sony name and use of Zeiss lenses and novel technology haven’t yet been enough to break the dominance of Canon and Nikon.

This is yet another part of the Sony strategy. By allowing Hasselblad selling luxury versions of Sony’s cameras Sony themselves will be associated with the most premium pro MF camera brand.

Sony by that in many people’s minds will be seen with more respect.
Hasselblad on the other hand will have more products to sell and make profit from, which can be important as the MF-market is very small. They also can offer their customers a full range of products from APS-C to MF that in future may be more integrated and share several acessories.

So this could be a win-win for both parties like a marriage between the noble (Hasselblad) and the rich (Sony).

  13. Why not to come back to square format ? Using a A-mount, covered by the image circle of a A-mount lenses, a square sensor 30×30 42MP, in a body A99 style, a little bit thicker… What a dream…!

    1. EnPassant, I’ve no idea whether your analysis is correct but that’t the most intelligent and likely explanation I’ve yet seen. So what if the first iterations are re-skinned existing models. Good. That’s an efficient way to quickly get things to market. If some people don’t want to pay for those products, fine, they’ve been priced by people who know what they’re doing, not by the idiots who don’t want to pay. And yes, if you don’t want to pay and you criticise the price, you are a moron, not the company charging that price. I’d rather have a house than a Bentley, it doesn’t make Bentley a bunch of fools…

I sincerely hope that this does increase the A and E mount penetration. I’d never have predicted this move and applaud a brave and surprising initiative by Sony.

  14. I have read many times on this site that it is all about image when it comes to being a professional photographer. In other words, if you are hired by a company to shoot their next ad campaign, you better show up with the most expensive Canon or Nikon. If you don’t, that company that hired you will not take you seriously. Especially if the guy that hired you has a more expensive camera than you do. Well now you can use a Sony and have all of the bragging rights at the same time. For those photographers where image is everything, Sony has just the camera for you.

    1. Now THAT is a good point. Who’s going to argue with a Blad? And building on my previous post, all those knownothings who will undoubtedly argue that Hasselblad will dilute their brand, the clever people at Hasselblad will have thought of that. Long and hard. And they’ve decided that their best business outcome is to take this path. It’s a risk. Critics don’t understand of course. Mudslinging carries no penalty and requires no skill…

  15. Why would they use SLT technology?

For me, that rather sounds like the return of the OVF for A-mount. After all, they are saying “new products for the DSLR … segment”, which strictly speaking excludes DSLTs.

    1. Now THAT is a good point. Who’s going to argue with a Blad? 16. And by the way. That lens on the Hassy looks like the Sony 18-70 kit lens. Hopyfully, they’ll add something a little better as kit lens when they ship that camera 😉

    1. Developing the sensor isn’t a problem. Sony got all the tech needed – they can always take 16MPx sensor and upscale it just like they did with 36MPx Full Frame.
Developing a method of manufacturing it in acceptable price point is however completely different story.

  17. Great to see a huge amount of third party lens support for Sony A/E mount in the last couple of days.
    Schneider Ziess Sigma
    Maybe Sony has finally arrived.
    😉

  18. So, maybe Sony’s NEXT acquisition, relegating “professional” still camera gear to the Hasselblad logo, and Alpha to the enthusiast marketplace, and CyberCams to the populace?

I wondered why Sony didn’t have a 36mp announcement to make after Nikon’s 36mp release obviously being a Sony-sourced chip, perhaps Nikon had so much involvement in it’s development that they got Sony to sign a no-compete clause for a year or more, as appeared be the case in the 24mp sensor.

Perhaps they have an agreement that so long as Nikon keeps 36mp chip orders up to a certain level, they can have exclusive use of a co-developed technology for a year or so, but if Nikon orders for 36mp chips fall behind, then Sony can release their own use of the 36mp chip?

By the way, Minolta made fresnel focusing screens for Hasselblad — Minolta’s bright screens are legendary and unique — but I had no idea the love affair between them went deeper than that.

  19. I think that all negative comments come from ppl, who are just stick in their… It’s the same, as Toyota and Lexus, there is almost everything shared between these cars, except, design and luxury feel. Ask Lexus owner, why he’s driving a Lexus not the identical Toyota? 🙂

    1. Lexus and Toyota aren’t exactly the same, though. Lexus models get more sound deadening, probably a better suspension (guessing), probably more luxury features, etc. I could say more about Acura TSX vs. Honda Accord. Leather seats are standard on the TSX, but are an extra for Accord. Xenon lights are standard on TSX, not available on Accord. 17″ alloys standard on TSX… Etc. At least, that is what it looked like a few years ago when I last looked into these cars.

As for a new A-mount camera, I’ve been thinking lately that a Nex-like A-mount camera might be interesting. Should be possible to have a large sensor and a more RF-shaped body (like some ’80’s minolta SLR, except that they still needed the “hump” of course).

  20. if this baby comes out with optical view finder, 36 megapixels with excellent noise control and priced around $8000, I will buy it.

  21. Ok Hasselblad, Ok a future A1, Ok everythings you want!!! But we need any excellent lenses to work (Zeiss or Sony made, I don’t care): new fixed 14/16-f2.8, 20-f2.8, 35-f1.2, 50-f1.2 or new improved zoom like 16-35 2,8 SSM-II and 24-70 2,8 SSM-II. Am I asking too much? I just preordered the new 300f2.8 G-II, now I need wide. Hurry up Sony!!!

  22. well Hasselblad should maybe reconsider their move to let kids “design” their cams and get a proper designer – just not Marc Newson ;).. what they did to the Nex 7 is looking horrible and butt ugly. this A99 mod or whatever it is, looks similarly crap.. but it proves that you cant buy taste

  23. Should have been Gucci, or Prada… freakin’ Eddie Bauer Edition, or the Hilfigger… the Ferrari, whatever…

    But not Hasselblad.

  24. is hasselblad going to make a the cameras, zeiss going to make the lens and sony the sensors and hardware..? that would be an awsome alliance!

  25. My guess is that it’s just a rebranded A99. If you want the camera, just get the A99 and save yourself a lot of money, unless you have big bucks and just have to have the Hassy name.

It’s the same with the Hassy NEX camera…it’s not just an E mount cam that uses the Nex 7 sensor…it is simply a Nex 7 with some fancy designer trim. If you want the exact same camera, just buy the Nex 7. Then you can tell everyone you have the equivalent of a hassy. It’s that simple.

  26. more to say…
This level of commitment to the Alpha mount by a third party like Hassy’ makes it an easier decision to stay on board. I’ve been flipping coins the past few days but now I’ve stopped.

  27. OK enough bodies now with new/improved/wonderful FF Sony sensor. (Nikon, Sony Alpha, Sony NEX, Sony RX1, Sony video cams, Pentax, Hasselblad, Olympus)

Now get out those new/updated lenses! FASTER!

  28. If Hasselblad had partnership with nikon/canon, all of those fanboys arguing would be enthusiastic about it.
Now that its Sony, they are so pathetically whining about it.
It seems they are getting afraid of Sony(?)

    1. Of course they are not. Even leica won’t sell rebadged Panasonic’s at such a ridiculous price. Personally, I found this to be disrespect to their customers.

      1. Leica Digilux 3, before Leica could make a proper digital ‘M’, they were pretty damn expensive for a 2/3″ digital camera with fixed lens…

  29. So the bodykitted NEX-7 has an iISO hotshoe and the bodykitted A99 has an ISO hotshoe? Did Hasselblad not think that might be a problem?

  30. It would be great is hasselblad offered a OVF option for A mount users, would really put A mount into its own league but even if that did happen, god only knows what the price would be.
Could this agreement have anything to do with the square sensor rumours?

Maybe we will have a APSC square format NEX camera, seems to make about as much sense and that NEX ‘thing’ they are currently proposing 🙂

  31. As many of you should be aware of, Sony does NOT have a competing product for the top of the line DSLRs 1Dx and D4… This might just be it. With a name synonymous to professionals and never on consumers..this is a great move for Sony! An 8K camera that has a 36megixel square sensor. Now that’s the shit. But my one true dream is for the to rehouse the VG900 into the H5D body!!! Gorgeous camera!! Id sell my car for that.

  32. I’m always amused to read comments from people whining about business decisions they don’t seem to understand. The latest partnerships announced by Sony are great news for everyone that invests or is about to invest in the alpha system.

Sony’s sensors are now in high end Nikon and Olympus camera. Sony’s EVF are used by Fuji. Now Hasselblad will likely use the A-mount and the E-mount, and maybe EVFs and sensors from Sony. Sony is sharing his R&D costs with his competitors while creating some brand recognition for himself. I think it’s pretty smart!

High pixel count sensors need good lenses… The lack of good lenses is one of the main complaints about the Alpha system. Hasselblad investing in A-mount is likely to motivate lens manufacturers to produce more good lenses.

As for Hasselblad, the 36MP of the Nikon D800 is closing the gap with medium format and upcoming camera will likely closed the gap even more. It’ll be harder and harder to justify the price difference for Hasselblad. Hasselblad needs to adjust. By diversifying himself, Hasselblad will lower his R&D costs per unit sold. Technologies developed for high end model will eventually end up in lower priced camera.

Will Hasselblad spoil his own brand recognition? A camera like the Hasselblad is not a fancy car you show up with at the country club. People willing to spend 13K to 30K for a Hasselblad are professionals. They exactly know what they are buying.

  33. At least we now know why Sony didn’t release the Medium Format camera prototype.

Looks like someone gave Sony a reach-around!

  34. Now I see why Sony have been so slow and non-forthcoming with firmware updates for the A77 and NEX-7… these features will be Hasselblad exclusives! The extra $4k+ get you the elusive FW 2.0, with tethering, wider bracketing options and a reprogrammable ? Button!

    1. “Now I see why Sony have been so slow and non-forthcoming with firmware updates for the A77 and NEX-7… these features will be Hasselblad exclusives! The extra $4k+ get you the elusive FW 2.0, with tethering, wider bracketing options and a reprogrammable ? Button!”

Let’s hope that’s not going to be true though!

  35. A few thoughts on the matter. First of all these are WEAK, prettied up A77 and NEX-7 models to sell to ‘premium’ buyers, there are more of those than ‘enthusiasts’ think! Think of all the idiots who buy Bose equipment for a start!

Secondly, this practice isn’t exactly new, look at Vertu – their phones are ‘prettied-up’ basic Nokia phones for people who want some bling in their lives. Actually Hasselblad are pretty clever going for this market as no-one else is doing it! Sure, a Leica is expensive as well, but they are aiming at ‘photography enthusiasts’, they are pretty stripped back and offer that ‘authentic photographers experience’ or whatever. BUT there is no one doing anything like this premium luxo with all the latest techno features that non-enthusiasts want. Sure it is a niche, but one no-one else is filling.

Secondly, these are purely first gen products from this new partnership. Why is that important? Well because products don’t magically appear overnight! Yeah ok so they just redressed the existing A77 and NEX-7, but that doesn’t mean second and third gen products will be quite so haphazard. Look at it like this, two companies join together on a joint partnership, they need to get a product out of the gates – Doing what they have done initially is a typical strategy for doing such a thing. When they have more time to actually develop something more bespoke, they will.

Look at Leica when digital started to become popular, they were far far off from bringing out a true ‘Digital M’, so they brought out crap re badged Panasonic’s at 3-4 times the price. Ok crap is a bit harsh, but they were damn expensive and relative to today’s mirrorless cameras, they were pretty bad. (I’m not expecting cameras from 8 years ago to be as good as mirrorless cameras today, but in relative quality terms these were more on par with high end bridge cameras with 2/3″ sensors).

It is entirely plausible that Hasselblad will actually bring some of their design to the table and not just some bling, but it isn’t going to happen on a first gen product.

  36. yo creo que esta es la reacción de Hasselblad a los 36 mpgs de la nikon D800.
I think that this is the reaction at 36 mpgs Hasselblad the Nikon D800.
