Most of you were right guys! The added “S” letter within the new “Exmor RS” sensor brand stays for “Stacked”. The full description of the new technology is available here at Sony.net. I guess these kind of sensors will find their use in cellulars and compact cameras and not so on larger sensor cameras.

#1 troll!
Maybe they want to test it at the cellulars and compact cameras for testing first,
No, it’s just smaller devices have faster refresh cycle and usually introduce new technologies first.
Sorry about my email and name but i have just one question for you SonyAlphaRumors.
What about a firmwar update for the VG20 ? do you have any news ? i wonder if the VG series is not completely abandonned after the last announcement of the new gen NEX Camera A50
No news.
Ok that mean the VG series are actually completely abandonned, if have no news for a update firmware of the VG20, it’s a real shame when you know that the VG20 have a big potential and a clean hdmi 4:2:2 with no overlay problem
Abandoned? Let’s not lose hope on a firmware update for the VG20. It took a while for the A77, which was more popular and highly anticipated–AND it released before the VG20. One could argue that Canon abandoned the 7D if basing manufacturer support solely on firmware delivery, but they did ultimately get to it.
Perhaps you’ve already done this, but if not, get your list of most desirable updates together and submit them to Sony and SAR. Use language that is constructive, make your arguments cogent, make the wish list concise / don’t convolute it with unrealistic expectations. Join forums and encourage others to do the same.
“The squeaky wheel gets the oil.” But, to compell Sony to allocate resources instead of tuning out noise, make sure the “squeaks” are helpful and occur often.
Brad, well-stated.
The VG20 is a nice camera but its a heavily down sampled image or video. 4:2:2 codecs are great for 3sensor systems that don’t have Bayer pattern issues to deal with. The VG20 (and other cameras) have too many pixel hits vs. miss artifacts. Moire is a big problem too.
A 4:2:2 codec will not fix any of this. The image flaws exist before it gets to the codec.
Higher bitrates might provide for less high motion artifacts but will do nothing to help color resolution. In this case, it won’t help keying either if you want 4:2:2 for green screen.
Here is a link with the vg20 firmware update request that has been started on a sony forum, but is convoluted. Maybe a new one should be started? Please, add something, if you feel there should be an update. We need all the help we can get.

RS = Really Small?
RS = Reversed Stacked
as far as I remember
Cliff to say that you didn’t even see some master edit couple VG20 + Ninja 2
i saw the VG20 have a strong and better picture than what the red for example can offer.
Don’t have any down sampled image/video on the VG20, it’s only on the series NEX5/7 etc… have that.. the VG20 is a Handycam don’t forget that, they need to keep all the best to give a reason to buy this camera than a simple NEX5N.
Also please keep looking on the 4:2:2 VG20 not the test from the EOSHD that they don’t know how to use a camera or other website that they bring bad critic for nothing… no sense of doing that, seriously the VG20 is pretty amazin, nice design, many possible stuff, 4:2:2 clean hdmi etc… when you know that the SFX Green need a color space of 4:2:2 to be more interesting…
Come on the VG20 is a nice product but Sony look like they don’t care, just few features to add and fix some default of the VG20 will make this one the best camera available at this price, can even beat the BMCC
I love my VG20….but let’s be honest here. The VG20 in sharpness compared to my EX1r is nothing. When you start with 16million pixels and throw 14million away, you are left with large spatial gaps in the image. Moire is bad and the image is very soft.
Look at the. http://WWW.slashcam.com resolution charts for the VG20. It’s terrible. My Sony CC760 is much sharper. This is why a 4:2:2 codec adds nothing to the camera. It’s current AVCHD codec is already higher “resolution” than the sensor is putting out.
Again…I love my VG20. You can get great video at times. Other times you get killed with it.
Actually cliff i did some testing (i didn’t buy yet the VG20, i’m waiting for firmware update) but i can tell you after testing many times this one that the VG20 have pure and good quality picture, even better than the Nex5N/Nex7 and almost near than the FS100.
The VG20 is pretty good in sharpness too (it depend what lens you use) if you use the 18-200 you don’t exploit at all your VG20 try some minolta MD/Canon FD and you will see something different.
When you use the Ninja 2 you exploit on a better way the VG20, it’s offer a uncompressed 4:2:2, wait that the next update of the Ninja 2 to exploit the DNxHD 220 you will be surprise how far where the VG20 can go… trust me the VG20 can offer better than what you think, even you use all the times.
Also don’t forget to play with the sharpness settings because in default the sharpness is really down to look the picture more flat (cinema)
Here a good method
Ninja 2/Shuttle connected to the VG20 with a canon FD for exemple
cinematone and 24p, you don’t need to press record on the camera, you press record on the Ninja 2 that capture the uncompressed scene (clean hdmi) mean that don’t have any compression or locked information…
I saw slashcam but the fact it’es slashcam test the camera on a default mode with the default lens…
You can compare the ex1r that you can’t change the lens to the VG20
I think you didn’t really exploit your VG20 cliff to say that the sharpness of the VG20 is bad etc..
Actually the sharpness is the best one i ever seen on a camera like that or dslr… better than my Panasonic 750 that we know this camera is a 3MOS and have one of the best picture available..
the VG20 can beat it with right lens…
Keep and mind that VG20 + lens adaptater = win !
Just test the sigma 24 F2.8 it give you a so nice picture on the VG !!! even with the Ninja 2
That is why we need an update to the firmware giving control of the picture settings like sharpness, etc. The cx760 is no where near as light sensitive as the vg20 when using a comparable lens.
Pound for pound the vg20 is much more cost effective than an outdated ex1r. I’ve seen ex1r lowlight examples where the image looks like mud compared with the vg20 & the right lens.
Nevertheless, the vg20 is deserving a firmware update anyway you slice it.
Looks like from the Sony announcement this will be too late for the iPhone 5. Would love some HDR video in my next phone camera.

Seems the last one is square… When will we have square sensor camera ?
hdr movie…..
1080p 60fps for a phone
wow..
