Sony NEX-5n beats the Nikon D7000! (preorders at Amazon UK and DE).

Sony NEX-5N Low Light ISO Test and Touch Screen Functionality

Now, is it possible that the $600 Sony NEX-5n image quality is much better (I repeat “much”) than the $1100 Nikon D7000? If you look at Dpreview forum (Click here) the answer is yes. Damn does the Sony ENX-5n look good! And look at that Panasonic G3 vs Sony NEX-5N vs Olympus E-P3 comparison at pcpop (Click here). Easy to guess who is the winner!

Just a personal note. I am sooo tempted to buy the NEX-5n instead of the NEX-7 that I almost going crazy 🙂 As I live in Europe I looked where to preorder the camera and I found two options:
Body only at Amazon DE (Click here).
with 18-55mm lens at Amazon DE (Click here) and Amazon UK (Click here).
double lens kit at Amazon DE (Click here) and Amazon UK (Click here).

I will probably go for the body only camera and use my [shoplink 8725 ebay]Nokton 35mm f/1.4 (See that lens on eBay)[/shoplink]. I need small and fast pancakes and that is probably the best lens I can use on the NEX-5n. Will write a review about that combination if I will find the courage to click on that damn “preorder” button! 🙂

    1. yes, by getting 3rd party flash that support preflashTTL WL trigger (slave2 mode) like YongNou Flashes or Studio light that support prettl flash

  1. In fairness, the d7000 image doesn’t really look focused properly. There’s a difference in sharpness as well as noise, but I’ll agree that the 5N is very very impressive.

  2. We should not confuse low light with underexposure. Obviously low light often leads to underexposure, but they are not the same. You can put a camera on a tripod and give several minutes exposure in moonlight, to give a fully exposed image that looks just like daylight.

What we are talking about here is acceptable underexposure, which is a matter of shadow contrast and noise level. How many stops can you underexpose and still get an acceptable result?

This is a very familiar question to those brought up on film.

  3. When there’ll be a 35mm f1.8 to couple it with, I am really going to buy this camera. At this time, I wouldn’t know what lens to use actually.

  4. Andrea,

Do you know if Sony is preparing a successor to the A55 – let say the A55n?
It would be awesome to have the A55 with the new OLED viewfinder, focus peaking and electronic first curtain!

  5. Andrea,
despite your fascination by the NEX-5N, I hope you will still report on the NEX-7 too, won´t you? (:-) I believe it is still too early for a verdict.

      1. Series of Sony cameras is marked by first number after “A”, then in Sony camera line are A3 (A35), A5 (A55), A6 (A65) A7 (A77) and A9 (A900) series.

  6. I disagree.
These images of Nikon 7000 and NEX 5N on Dpreview forum have similar quality – for me.
You have to adjust sharpness and contrast – bump it up on Nikon.

And YES: I do want a NEX7 and/or A65 with this beautiful 16 Mp Sensor!!! Sony pleeaaase!! I do not need 24 Mp! I do not want to buy a new computer to load the images in a reasonaple time!

  7. Yeah I’m getting the NEX5n as the NEX7 is too rich for my money. Although the 7 is the perfect camera for me, after reading what steve wrote I think the NEX5n is a wiser buy. BTW anybody want my old and battered NEX5 for $100?

  8. …until iso 800 ep3 is better, no way…look at super flat color of nex and g, too.
At iso 200 and 400 you see details in ep3 that you cant see in nex/g (lower AA filter)
I prefer more details at base iso than super iso capability.

    1. So I guess you’ve found your new camera. I, on the other hand, see that the EP3 shot was over-exposed by 1/3 of a stop. The NEX has more contrast, which gives it a sharper look. The G3 is quite soft compared to the NEX. As for detail, I don’t know how you can see more details with the EP3. I don’t think these would give me anything conclusive. However, one can clearly see that the NEX is at least 2-stop better than the EP3.

  9. I ordered a NEX 5n as a more portable compliment to my a55, but with such high IQ, I’m wondering if there’s a point to even keeping the a55- should I sell it along with my modest collection of a-mount lenses to invest in more e-mounts and the EVF? Should I get the adapter for a-mounts and sell the body? All the tough questions when portability and quality are no longer inversely proportioned! :-p

    1. If you already have A-mount lenses, I say sell the a55 body, get the adapter and EVF… You get the best of both worlds

  10. What are the limits of video recording time .. I have the HX9v and it is 29 minutes.. Is this camera limited to the 5 – 7 minute as other dslrs??

    Thanks

  11. Bought it while waiting for the next Sony FF next year hopefully. Camera is pretty darn awesome. Still getting used to it. I will be getting the EVF based on Huff’s review. Huff gives a good review. He seems to give his opinion without being biased for against a certain camera or company. Bottom line this camera takes really good photos and the video is also very good. Any body arguing about that just does not like Sony. I am very critical of Sony but they did a nice job with this camera, I hope they do not drop the ball on the next FF.

  12. In the green area i see the difference..the curvature of the paper…1/3 of stop give you that difference in color???…sony may have 2 stop only over 1600.

  13. You might be interested in checking the same website image resources for a comparison of the nex5n and all of the full frame cameras. I checked 1600 and 3200 iso and it seems to outresolve with lower noise than all cameras tested with the exception of the pentax645…WOW!!!
