Firstly: I want to thanks all sources for all the help you are giving to me. I am trying to post all the info you send me as soon as possible. And most of the rumors I do receive are ….awesome 😉
Secondly: There is one thing I want to tell to all readers. Plenty of people contacted me to say that they tested the A77, the NEX-C3 and other upcoming Sony stuff. They don’t share specs, they share their excitement! There is not a single one that complained about the upcoming new cameras. They are all using an enthusiastic tone! The A77 especially is amazing and the best APS-C camera they have ever tested. The good news is that High-ISO is extremely good even if the sensor has 24 Megapixel. And Sony is already working very hard to implement the new sensor technology inside the future fullframe cameras. Everything with the A77 seems to be fine, usability, autofocus (extremely fast and accurate), High ISO, resolution. And also the NEX-C3 is a step above the current NEX-3/5.
I repeat, those are not Sony advertisers. I know some of the sources since a very long time and they would never express such an excitement if it wouldn’t be true. I for myslef am going to spend more time on SonyAlphaRumors. I think it’s necessary to be more “present” in times like that. I also want to find some time to improve some things on this website ->don’t ask me to improve my english as that will take a very long time 🙂
So fix those dates in your agende: June 3 and July 7! And invite your friends to follow us! Canonikans should be very worried!!!

“Canonikans should be very worried!!!” There is no need for them to be worried. You can always buy Sony equipment to replace it with !
As promising as the nex-c3 sounds a lack of 1080p video is a deal breaker for me, the nex 7 is above my budget. I think an nex-c5 is extremely unlikely otherwise information would have been leaked by now.
Samsung make a 30mm f2 pancake for £170 here or $250 which is the perfect pancake lens, while I’d like to think a third party lens maker such as sigma could make something similar I am not holding my breath.
Yes, the biggest problem with the NEX lens roadmap are the missing pancakes. But I hope Sony will fix that. I hope they will listen to customers!
Thanks Admin,
Any chance you could give us some qoutes of the feedback you’ve recieved for the a77? Without names of course.
😉
The feedbacks do not contain any specific data. They are testing the A77 and other cameras with the different lens prototypes. The combination between new cameras and new lenses works very well. They were particulary suprised with the noise performance as they expected nto so good results with the new 24 megapixel sensor.
No NEX-7 testers? 🙁
Indeed, that worries me a bit. Hope they didn’t delay the NEX-7 announcement…
Thanks for comfirming :). Never mind I guess, honestly didn’t expect an A77 and NEX-7 to be released alongside each other anyway… I have patience for the NEX-7… I still hope we have it by the end of the year though.
It sounds amazing but I don’t want to get overhyped and then disappointed later on.
That’s what I was waiting for too long to hear!
Hope you are right Andrea. Much thanks 🙂
Canonikans shouldn’t be worried at all, sony will sell their sensors to nikon as they always do….I have already heard d4 will have sony 40mp sensor and I bet d400 will have 24mp sony sensor also…..and if past means anything d400 will beat a77 as d300 have shattered a700 (in sales and overall performance)…
but than again, personally I don’t give a rats ass about nikon or canon, or sony for that matter, all I want is greatly improved AF system on a77, live view and even better video than a55 has to offer, I don’t doubt in better ISO performance where even a55 is excellent….
Andrea I really appreciate your work here, honestly without this site I would probably jumped ship months ago, but these rumors gave me an excellent heads-up for the upcoming products, I mean we didn’t actually hear anything from sony in ages and rumors you published were pretty accurate.
You just gave me an idea, will ask Sony to pay me for that job 🙂
haha, you should ask them, for a camera at least 😛
thanks for the job you’ve been doing for such a long time.
Yes, THREE CHEERS for you Andrea.
As feedmatekill mentioned, I too would have jumped ship months ago without your inspiration and time to time info on the upcoming “legendary” a77.
If Nikon will keep price of d400 at similar level as it was for d300 it will cost almost twice as much as A77. I suppose Nikon couldn’t implement translucent mirror and come close to continuous AF, fps bursts of A77 camera. With each generation of cameras Sony comes closer to Nikon and at one day they will made not only cheaper, but also better camera than Nikon and Pentax.
TBH, if that day ever comes, Sony camera will not be cheaper. Sony is not known to sell anything cheap if they have the upper hand.
As for the rumor, I’m so excited as well. This would pave the way nicely to A99 and NEX-9 (hopefully the latter is FF). I would like to express my appreciation to Andrea for keeping this site running.
Does A77 have 14-bit RAW or 12-bit RAW?
That’s an important question for me too. Everyone else now, even lower-level cameras, is using 14-bit.
Don’t have the answer on that. Will ask around!
I hope the reported in the wild issues with shutter lag/delay and/or simulated exposure in live view will not be varries over into the a77 from the a3x/5x/5xx lines.
Somewhere in the world, Pancanikonpus has just fainted from excitement… 🙂
ROFLMAO XD
+1
Let’s be sincere: this camera is way, way, way overdue. Sony put public patience to some test. Nice to know, though, that we are likely to have a good body.
At last.
So how much lag does the EVF have? In single shot still photography? The basics, folks.
What’s it to you? You’ve made it perfectly clear you ain’t interested in the A77.
You know that there’s no need for your comment. You know very well that people are referring to the shutter lag when shooting at the high fps.
Just because it’s not a big deal to you, it doesn’t mean that it’s not a big deal to others.
For many people, high fps rates are a deal breaker. Sports, events, weddings, etc.. So there is proper reason to be concerned about a crippled high fps rate, due to the evf lag.
So don’t be negative.
Actually, what I know is that Walt is NOT referring to the shutter lag. But either way, of course folks that might be interested in the camera have a right to be concerned about deal-breaker features. My point was that Walt has made it crystal clear that he has no interest in the A77 at all, so why bother asking the question – the answer will not make one bit of a difference.
BKD, I’m sorry, my comment was directed at WALT. Not you. I agree with you completely.
Walt, there is no reason why you should be commenting here if all you’re doing is being silly. So please, stop.
@bkd, @Juan: Who are you to say to anybody to not comment? Are you the World’s greatest authorities? Nobel laureates? Dalai Lamas? Is your good feeling the World’s first priority? Will you deny the truth for your own well-being? There would be no progress without contestation – so let people ask awkward question, …or is it about a kind of religion? …your comments suggest you are a complete ignoramus, so maybe please, stop yourself from stopping anybody from telling things you don’t understand.
clearly you didn’t understand. Ignoramus? Please. I was only asking to keep those kind of comments at bay.
Why would one post a comment that implies that other people’s concerns about EVF lag are insignificant? THAT is a comment that not only fails* to contribute to the discussion, but also puts others down in saying that their worries are silly.
I asked that he NOT do that. I’m completely open to another person’s opinion. I welcome it because that’s when discussion really happen. But he didnt give an opinion. Only negativity. And BKD was right. Walt has clearly expressed that he has no interest in the a77.
I think forums should be for people who sincerely have interest in the topic, and care to contribute*. And comments should be reserved for those* people.
So again, Nuxar. You clearly didnt understand. So relax. There’s no need to get aggressive either. You’re* comment does more harm than good.
nuxar,
You are completely right. Walt has all the rights to make fool of himself wherever and whenever he wishes…
I never asked Walt not to comment – just curious as to why he was asking for details about a camera that he has clearly stated he has no interest in. Coming from anyone else, it would have been a perfectly valid question – and hopefully the answer would have been useful to those interested in the camera. Coming from Walt, though (whose dislke of Sony and all things SLT is now legendary), one has to question his motive in asking the question.
Where are the new lenses 1 year later!?!?!?!!… I think tha Sony forget the Nex consumers……..
BKD, I’m sorry, my comment was directed at WALT. Not you. I agree with you completely.
Walt, there is no reason why you should be commenting here if all you’re doing is being silly. So please, stop.
Hey ( BDK ) —————————————————————————————– Why don’t you not worry about what Walt has made perfectly clear, or what he hasn’t. To many people are worried about correcting other peoples questions, setting people straight, or telling people what will make a difference or what will not. You people read what people write or ask, and if you don’t agree you jump all over them! Chill out people! (and by the way If you don’t like someones questions or what they think maybe your not the one to be answering them). Ok BDK, Juan have have something to say about me and what I wrote now! Stop trying to police everything! walt wrote one sentence, BDK had to make a comment and Juan had to write what seemed like a entire chapter about it ! Grow up people
Is it a fact that the Alpha 850/900 are the last full-frame DSLRs from Sony and that all new full-frame cameras from them are going to be SLTs? I’m intrigued by the SLT concept but I love the a850/900’s pentaprism viewfinder.
Any chance of a new FF DSLR from Sony or it DSLT all the way from now on?
Its not 100% decided yet, but yes it will be probably SLT only. I dont like that idea either. Sure why not have A99, but in same time I would like A950 (just give A900 tilt-swivel and Live View, maybe upgrade SNR a bit and Im happy, and most professional would be too, A900 isnt missing much).
I’m sure not going to sell my A900 if I buy another full frame body. I’ll keep it as a backup and for tripod work.
Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your website and those exiting good news (I’m visiting almost twice a days).
How are the news about the EVF (on the experience point of view, of course) ?
Could you provide us with stuffs like improvement on lag, contrats problems, etc.
Regards
François
The EVF is completely new and 3 milion dot OLED. Much nicer to look into compared to current LCD technologies. I will ask my sources for more details!
Great rumors, let’s hope hey come true! As a Canon shooter I’d be delighted to see Sony really making a breakthrough in midrange DSLR (and alike) league and thus taking bigger share in sales. Otherwise Canon would endlessly reiterate the Rebel idea and would think twice before making such mitakes as the 50D to 60D downgrade was.
Not mentioning that 40D vs 50D wasnt exactly upgrade either..

Your english is better than my italian (because I’m dutch :))
Go on with this very good site
thanks for your effort.
Peter
You don’t need good English to say: “SONY DSLT A77” XD
Google translator should take care of the rest of the article 😀
When it is out (in Fall?) I hope to have saved money for one. And I’m gonna need a bigger computer to handle the huge image files.
I have looked for, but not found, a comparison table comparing specs the A33, A55 and the accumulated info on to-come A77 to see differences.
@Henning
Sony has discontinued the production od a33, instead, is going to market a35 🙂
We have to wait 37 odd days to get a complete specification for the a77 per SAR. I know how long the wait seems…
Wow! I can’t wait for this tech. to make its way into the next Pentax camera! a 24mp high ISO beast is exactly what we need. I just hope Pentax can follow suit with better AF and other performance figures as well.
Thanks Sony!
oh no, i have to cancel my 28mm f1.8 then 🙂 re-sale is a must 🙂
I hope they put a remote shutter release capability on the NEX 3C. The NEX 3 doesn’t and the the NEX 5 only works if you are in front of the camera.
Not usable for my purposes when I make panoramas.
I am wating to see how good A77 would perform in the real world.
Oh wow. June 3 is just two more days later. 😀
nikon d400 will probably eat the sony a77 alive : D
nothing new.. just history repeating : )
d400 is another class of camera. 😛 If the a77 compares favorably to the d7000—that’s the test.
Ya, with a price tag of $2,200 which would be double the price of a77.
The A700 was slotted between the D300 and D80, in its day, and I’d expect the A77 to be slotted somewhere in between the D7000 and D400. Like the A700, I’d expect the A77 to be a “D400-lite.”
I didn’t know the D400 is also moving to translucent mirror?
Between D7000 and D400?? So, D7000 is going to lose a few hundred USD off it’s retail price in a hurry?
REALLY? Time to shine, time to tell the world that WE BELIEVE in future technology!
No doubt the d400 will have a far better OVF than the a77
😉
🙂
I doubt it. a700 was sony’s first pro crop body while nikon has been producing these cameras for a long tine. It really is unfair to compare directly.
Times have changed. Let’s see what the a77 has to offer before making biased comments. When will the D400 surface is also another question altogether. :F
@Andreas keep up the good work and keep those rumors coming.
Hopefully soon I’ll have the a77 in my hands. I only hope Sony keeps us current and up to date with the firmwares needed to keep canikon at bay. If all the rumors are true, we should have the baddest prosumer camera on the planet. Once my a77 arrives, I’ll put my a100 and maybe my a700 for sale so I can buy another a77 body if the hype meets my expectations.
Do u think this sensor will be used in the next nex camera (aka NEX7)?
I do.
Yes! Same sensor!
That would be nice, but i have my doubts. NEX-5 is not using the A580/D7000/K5 class sensor. So, maybe we’ll see A580’s sensor in NEX-7?
Whoops, i guess Admin just erased any doubts that i had 🙂
any info about NEX 7 ..?? Hope the rumor is true.. 🙁
Your “sources” should share this (more interesting) info
How many total AF points? How many cross type?
Is the RAW 12-bit or 14-bit?
Yes, will ask!
Irfan, I agree with you!
Admin, could you help on this??
today 1st June, 35 days to go orange77 annoucement!
today 1st June, 35 days to go orange77 annoucement!
today 1st June, 35 days to go orange77 annoucement!
Bugger off and take some pictures with your 600D 🙂
He’s probably already sold it and is pondering getting a D5100.
common, at least i now know canon dslr experience (entry level) lol…
while i have little bit fun before reaching Oct
Going for Pentax DSLR experience next?
Now i understand how slow the Canon Live view AF. and understand how important movie record with AF tracking. it does gives advantages although filming is run in manual mode.
I have cancelled the order for 28mm f1.8 usm 😀 15-60 f2.8 not bad for kit 🙂
Not bad? More like I’m looking forward to it.
That’ll make my 16-105/3.5-5.6 obsolete.
i wonder that whether the cmos would be new Q67 pattern
no specs? just oppinion from testter..
sory but i tend to not belive in sony tester..
just look the other sony camera (except alpha 900) they all suck…
I know this is a long shot, but:
Any idea on weather or not you can change the shutter speed/iso/apeture while video recording? (with autofocus on or off)?
I know the a55 gives you apeture control when you manual focus, but not shutter/iso control.
That’s the only thing that’s holding me back from getting a canon or a55. I’d have severe buyer’s remorse when the 77 comes out and it did all the canons could do and more.
I think NEX-7 will be the bombshell: cut price A-mount camera… with no Viewfinder but a smaller than A55 (in volume and weight) body … it has the same chipset as the A77 perhaps the same LCD, complete with steady shot inside and RRP at-least 150 less than the A77!!!!!
So customers can get either an A55 (or A56) or an NEX-7 at the same price level!!
I will definitely buy the NEX-7! I am already saving my money for it 🙂
dream on 😉 it was stated here that the NEX-7 will be above A77 price range.. maybe its more complicated to build or Sony thinks it`ll sell just fine even with a high price tag ..anyhow, we`ll see
Yeah, NEX-7 doesn’t sound like a compact camera. It sounds like a mirrorless version of A77.
Now I have to rethink about carrying both A77 and NEX-7 as the backup :\
Exciting indeed.
…but I’m more excited in finding me a lens to compensate that massive 24MP. I’m looking for the perfect APSC lens for the A77, but so far I found none. The 16-80CZ is too noisy.
Just I’ll just go for the Sigma 17-50mm, but the Sigma compatibility problem with DSLT really bothers me.
Any lens will resolve 24mpix. Hell, stick a 20 year old Minolta lens on it, if it was sharp on 35mm film it will be sharp on 24mpix…
That’ll depend on how much you enlarge it. Making A0 size prints from a Minolta 35-80mm Shutter Cap that’s been dropped a few times and you’re asking for trouble.
How much you enlarge it is nothing to do with the lens, I’ll say again, if the lens was sharp on 35mm film it will be sharp on 24mpix.
Or are you saying that 20 year old 35mm Minolta lenses can’t produce a film image enlarged to A0? Well they have been doing that on film for a lot longer than digital has been around 🙂
Sharp lenses will have no problem on 24mpix just like they had no problem on 35mm film. It’s bonkers to say that a 24mpix sensor will out-resolve a lens.
As stated, there are new lenses coming with it. Why not wait?
The kitlens? No thanks 🙂
Hope the new A77 will also be very suitable for studio photography and studio flashes, the big failure of the A55….
I agree with you. The fact that no pc link/connect exists on the a580, a55 and countless others is concerning. I resisted the urge to buy a backup which had new tech and kept up with the a700. The a850/a900 were not good choices since I wanted to stay with-in my budget. I do studio photography with my a700 thanks to the pc link/connect but that doesn’t help me when I have to use a pocketwizard. In that case I use the FA-HS1AM which allows me to use any product that uses a conventional hotshoe.
it’s now time for the oranges, enough for the apples! 😀
Good to know the autofocus is so good, but any word about the high-resolution EVF?
@goon: Yes, mentioned several times in the comments. Please read.
Sorry, you’re right. What I read still makes me very concerned: better VF than A55 is great, but what I need is better than my a700’s OVF… Let’s wait and see!
I should not have to say all this in explanation of asking a straightforward question about the a77’s characteristics. Walt has questions and has a right to ask them same as anyone else, I’m not some special case who is to be censored.
The main reason (though there are others) why I have so far rejected the SLT design is the EVF lag relative to the lag of a OVF. A lag which occurs with every single shot, not just in continuous shooting. That lag determines how much shooting of moving subjects is possible, and how panned shots and framing work out. I have tested the EVF lag of the 55 and found it way too long for some of my shooting, so rejected it. I’m asking for info on the EVF timing on the a77.
No I’m not talking about shutter lag, or human reaction time which should be roughly the same on the SLT designs as Sony’s SLRs and of course adds to the EVF lag in shooting. I’m talking about the lag in getting the view on display to react to in the first place with the EVF. How far behind real time is the view in the EVF in the a77. It matters a lot with reaction on moving targets, and on framing if you are panning. It will have a range of timing depending primarily on lighting. It is actually more important than the resolution of the EVF display.
It’s a serious question, limiting discussion just to where the a77 may be better than previous cameras is a incomplete picture. And that’s what you folks seem to want to do.
So how much lag does the EVF have? In single shot still photography? This is asked of those testing the camera or anyone else who has real knowledge of the quality of the EVF in the a77.
I think shutter lag depends on processor capabilities to manage data flow. I think A77 will get new powerful Bionz and/or different chip (graphic card) for video. Otherwise solution could be second sensor for EVF or hybrid type EVF.
“I’m asking for info on the EVF timing on the a77.”
Why? You’ve already made it clear you have no interest in the A77
“It’s a serious question, limiting discussion just to where the a77 may be better than previous cameras is a incomplete picture. And that’s what you folks seem to want to do.”
So what? You’ve already made it clear that you have no interest in the A77. Let those that have an interest discuss the features that matter to them.
What will be a77’s batery? Same as a55’s? Thanks
The rumored specs said about 1000 shots I think, the a55 does about 350-400 from memory.
So we’re looking at at least double the capacity.
so it’s gonna be a new battery pack then. 🙁 sad. what a waste. i hope they can provide backward compatibility for the people upgrading from a55 to a77. 🙂
Anyone have any thoughts on the overheating issue with video that was still not resolved on the A35. I use my A33 as dual use in Florida and I cannot shoot video outside for longer than 2 minutes in the summer even with ISS turned off. Let’s not forget the total lack of manual video control that even the Rebel series Cannons have.
If the Overheating is still a huge factor I will be switching to the 7D.
Why backwards compatibility?
Other than the micro adjustment, one of my main reasons for trading in my 55 for a 77 is the battery on the 55 sucks… Would love a vertical grip for the 55, but doesn’t seem like sony’s gonna get us one…
It’s certainly good to see that other camera manufacturers will now be playing catch up to Sony.
All the ‘Ah, but just you wait until the XXXX has the Sony sensor in their cameras’ are really missing the point here…
