The only new Panasonic lens that we will be able to buy soon after Photokina is the 35-100mm f/2.8 X lens. The other new Panasonic lenses will be shown on a roadmap only (and maybe as a prototype behind a thick glass only). This “other” lenses will than be available from early 2013 only. We have no bulletproof spec about the next Panasonic lenses but there could be one new wide angle zoom, a telephoto prime and another unknown lens.
Price of the 35-100mm X should be similar to the current [shoplink 31225]Panasonic 12-35mm X lens[/shoplink]. Something else. A readers sent me the link to a [shoplink 33088 ebay]12-35mm X led ring adpater (Click here)[/shoplink].

…a telephoto prime … YES!
A wide zoom, perhaps a replacement for the 7-14mm? Make it a wide prime and it’s mine!
I greatly prefer 35–100/2.8 X over its sibling 12–35 for this price (as most of the time I use the 45–200 and the 45/1.8), but I can afford none of them anyway.
Same here.
If there is one lens, existing or upcoming, that makes it difficult for me to desire what I already have, it has got to be that one.
Yes I will definitely get the 35-100mm F2.8 on day 1.
I am waiting for 7-12 f2.8…
or a prime ultra wide rectilinear like 7mm…
The 7-14/4 is so good, I can’t understand why one would think a 2.8 would be better. At least, I expect people not wanting to pay double for the enlargement from f4 to f2.8. And due to the short focal lenghts, f4 is plenty in any situation with modern sensors that can do ISO’s like 800 in quality.
Yes but I not see any other lens around 7 that is rectilinear…only 7-14 Panasonic’s f4…I want to have a choice at least from other companies too…f4 is little for cinematic movie…for me at least…for others maybe is good…
For me, classic portrait fov is equivalent to “normal” in video. 7mm ain’t just ultra wide, its niche with limited use. Very much so. Probably useful for some short sequences, such as “a slow paning view of the whole city/landscape to let know where the action will now take place”
How much is this generally shared thought, I don’t know, but I suspect this is not Panasonic’s priority.
43 7-14mm is well regarded and can go f2.8 at 7mm. Should do it for now 😉
2 stops faster means for me that at f4 should be sharper… And bigger
I’m with you about size but a faster lens avoids diffraction which, with such a wide lens, the limits for the 16mp sensor should start at f4 only…
And bigger means also more difficult to put filters on it…
Anyway the 7-14/4 is so so good, that good that the differences would be marginal except for our pockets!! 😉
Yes but I do not want as big dof…I prefer opposite…normal or less…no problem
7/2.8 would have huuuuge DOF, too.
I know Mikre…But the cinematic difference for post is huge also in 2 steps…
Diffraction doesn’t depend on the widest aperture but on the one you actually use. The only reason why a f2.8 lens stopped down to f4 often gives better results then a ‘native’ f4 lens is because it simply is a much better lens because most slower lenses are also lower grade optically.. However, in case of the 7-14/4, this is already a very good lens.
Additionally, f2.8 is 1 stop faster then f4, not 2 stops.
+1 for a 7mm prime.
C’mon, the 7-14mm is a great lens! Sure, weather sealing would be nice, as maybe filter threads would, but not necessary. As it is now, the 7-14m manages to strike a pretty good balance in terms of size and weight, with excellent image quality and a not insane price. It’s one of the better M4/3 lenses, certainly one of the best M4/3 zooms.
Yes, it’s expensive, but open it open up to f2.8 and it might double on all 3 counts… size, weight and price. Some complain about it now on those points…. I can almost hear the wailing now. 😉
give me a cheap, software-corrected 10mm, omg how hard can it be
yes yes yes, that is exactiy my lens! A small cheap 10mm, I miss my 2,8/20 Nikkor since so many years…….
+1,000,000
Same here! I miss my Nikon 20mm f2.8! Such a great and fun lens to shoot with! Luckily, I still have it.
When I mounted it on my GH2, I finally understood what the 2x crop really meant. 🙁
+1 : very good idea !
Could even be f/3.5…
Buy the Samyang 7.5mm/3.5 and crop the image 🙂
I have the Samyang. It’s an excellent lens but a defished crop doesn’t cut it.
it’s a fisheye!
I have this nice lens, but it is a fisheye. You don’t know what you miss, if you never have had a fast 10mm(20mm) lens.
+1
Anyone else considering the Nikon d600? This lens is only equivalent to f5.6 in terms of dof, yet it costs a fortune. Most of the micro 43 lenses seem too expensive to me. I’m looking at getting the new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 to go along with it. It’ll be nice to have a camera where 2.8 is 2.8 in terms of dof.
dg the d600 is indeed alluring for the price, but its a trick, you have to buy good lenses for it otherwise youre just wasting money. The tamron 24-70 is soft, way softer than the panasonic 12-35. I have them both, and the nikon branded 24-70 too, neither of them is as sharp as the panasonic wide open. I rented it first and after seeing the results on the OM D, I ordered it right away. The nikon is very sharp at f5.6, but the panasonic blows it out of the water at f2.8-4. Lensrentals said the same thing about the canon 24-70 versus the panasonic, and the results speak for themselves. You really do get what you pay for here. I find myself very often going to f5.6 on my D3X and staying at f2.8 in m4/3s, so wheres the advantage?
still, if the nikon actually costs 1600$, and its not insanely crippled, im picking one up and dust off a few primes…
Nope, I consider extra DOF an extra advantage in most low light situations.
+1 so do I in many situations, more dof in low light/street! even though most people posting about dof here always seem to need as thin dof as possible..
I agree Torstein, little DOF can be a PRO or a CON, depends from the situation.
I often see even portraits taken in full frame at f4 or f5.6 and not at 2.8 or less to get enough DOF. This leads to longer exposure time or higher ISO, burning the advantage to have a FF sensor.
Plus, FF lenses more often don’t have the best resolution when wide open or evident vignetting. 4/3 lenses suffer less from these problems because lens size is less an issue compared to FF.
Add to that the fact that the D600 is rumored to sell for about $1,500. If this is the same price the new GH3 will cost, what compelling reason would it have to stick with micro four thirds over full frame?… Size and weight, yes. But now the cost advantage will be gone for a sensor that’s four times smaller. All said, the D600 looks incredibly tempting.
Has anyone seen actual specs or a photo of the D600? I haven’t yet, but it would seem logical for Nikon to in part differentiate it from the D800 by having a significantly smaller/lighter body without weathersealing, no reason it couldn’t even be D5100 size/weight and copy Olympus’ trick of offering an accessory grip for larger lenses. Now that would be an interesting proposition compared to the GH3, or even the E-M5 (what’s another $500 when you’re already dropping a grand?).
Then the mFT advantage would come down to its still smaller/lighter/more slender bodies, small/light lenses and greater DOF for those who want it. But they may need a cost cut to compete, along with an end to Olympus’ game of charging up to $90 extra for a hood :).

The last 2 Nikors I bought didn’t include a hood or pouch either, it rather seems to me this is where Olympus got the idea that they can sell those separately.
FF is quickly becoming a thing of the past and only worshiped by some old fanatic Canon Nikon fanboys.
really ,even serious paid work can be done with a good MFT or a NEX now.
and we don’t need old film legacy and influence anymore in truely digital only camera format like MFT, NEX and NX.
Scott Bourne , MR and many other famous pros use EM5 now and they are quite happy with it.
so, FF fanboys wake up and see the reality.
this lens would be very nice addtion to my X12-35f2.8 and Oly75mmf1.8.
by the way, the D600 or whatever called cheap Nikon FX is not for a serious photog , you can tell that by its specsheet lacking of 1/8000th max SS.
And if you compare D600’s f/2.8 with medium format, suddenly f/2.8 is… f/4.5 ( ? ) in terms of DOF. Oops ! 🙂
All this “equivalent” fight is mainly in our heads. Choose a system with it’s advantages and disadvantaged but DO NOT always think using other system’s properties. It’s pointless. Or, at least, use MediumFormat as the master system 😀
I also agree with Torstein… in m43 you can actualy have usable photo in 25mm f/0.95 (6×6 equiv: ~80mm f/3.2 hehehe )
I’m thinking so. F2.8 for m4/3 is not that excited. Anyway, if its price is okay, I may consider it.
2.8 on mft at long tele FL is exciting to have
Nope, but thanks for asking.
I don’t see the point for someone who owned the 75mm & go for this lens too .
I’ll definitely skip it & prefer to rent it if I really want to know the IQ from this lens .
F2.8 is not good enough for me .
Ideally the release of the 35-100 will put some price pressure on the oly 75 mm. The oly 12 mm also got cheaper (imho, it was ridiculously expensive) when the 12-35 came out.
35-100mm f/2.8 is an internal zoom lens?
I think so as it’s weather sealed.
There is an entire line of ‘high-grade’ 4/3 lenses from Olympus that is weather sealed but doesn’t use internal focus, such as:
11-22/2.8-3.5
12-60/2.8-4
14-54/2.8-3.5 (in 2 versions)
50-200/2.8-3.5 (also in 2 versions)
So, weather sealed doesn’t imply intwrnal zoom.
I doubt it. It looks too small to be that fast and also internal zoom. The 12-35mm lens is also weather sealed but is not internal zoom.
yeah and it is small and relatively cheap.
Pana press conference report at IFA2012.
They say “Three new Lumix lenses to come within this year.”

You wouldnt compare the d600 to the em5 or gh3 its a different animal. I am sure they are going to cripple it
yeah exactly and in fact , after I got my EM5, I have seldom used my bigger Nikons and I would probably never use it when no one else is around me to see me shooting some silly weddings ,etc.
for me the EM5 was a gamechanger , it made me sell my D7000, my A900 and many other cameras and changed my way of shooting everyday life.
but I dont think the D600 or whatever called CHEAP FF from N make any one change their shooting habits or style, maybe the D800 did it though.
so, the D600 can be a big hit but not a game changer , it is just an old design camera with a big sensor and the noisy quick return mirror from the last century.
