A few tips to make the best our of the new AF tracking system:
– Enable Mechanical Shutter (MS) only. The camera won’t focus between each shot (CL or CH) if MS+ES (electronic shutter) is enabled.
– Turn Off face detection to enable PDAF
– High Performance Mode ON

Looks quite convincing to me.
Why o why is the X100s left in the cold? Fuji! Please!
The fact X100s is forgotten means the X-T1 will be my last Fuji body. I am very dissapointed in Fuji for having forgotten X100s (and in lesser part X-E1)
you won’t get that from any other manufacturer either.
Tantrumtime!

Seeing as I don’t own an X100S (or an X-Pro1, for that matter), I really don’t care. However, I’m sure some of us cheapskates who like buying used gear will gladly purchase your “investment” in FUJIFILM lenses when you finally switch over to … erm … let’s see … erm, does Samsung update their old cameras?
Look, be realistic, this firmware release for the X-T1 has absolutely nothing to do with KAIZEN, but everything to do with keeping the X-T1 marketable. Remember that version 3.00 came as the result of the graphite X-T1, which meant that FUJIFILM had to update the firmware for the black (and thus also those already sold) X-T1 to keep it the same as that of the graphite version. This new version 4.00 is the result of the X-T10 camera, which meant that FUJIFILM had to update the firmware for their “flagship” X-T1 to keep it on par with the lower-end X-T10. Thus, not KAIZEN at all.
To hell with the X100S! Let’s move on to the X100T successor!!! Only half kidding here. The X100S is a fine camera just as it is. If you need more there are other options. My X100 can still do the job so what’s the deal with all this complaining?
The X100s is nearing 3 years since it’s US release… I still have mine and though I do wish they would update it to add Classic Chrome and other features, I can’t expect a company to keep updating this product when there are newer products on the market, and they’re no doubt working on the successor to the X100T for the future.
How many updates did Canon release for the 5D mark II after the mark III came out? Zero. Not being a fanboy, but I’m honestly thankful that Fuji even does what it has for older cameras. Most manufacturers drop updates as soon as an updated product is announced.
I have an idea for the next new big feature: shooting profiles tied to the lens currently installed. The camera should remember the AF (and maybe some other, like a minimum shutter speed) settings that I’ve used with this particular lens last time.
spot on trenton!
Only if the camera then also displays a BIG HUGE infobox when attaching the lens informing the user that it is applying a previous profile.
No way. You either enable this option in the menu, or you don’t. Nanny cameras are just as irritating as “Do Not Eat” label on a dumbbell.
You and me maybe, but what about all those other yokels who’ll then complain because their lenses aren’t functioning right anymore … because they forgot to change the profile after using the lens indoors three weeks ago and now they’re outdoors in bright sun.
Easy peasy: just lock and hide all “expert” settings by default and make users read a scary consent form upon unlocking. And a customer service phone greeting should start with “please turn the expert menu off…”
Why not going all radical?
– hide/delete/rename menu options
– convert face detection to “anything but face”
– introduce focus range limits (between 50cm – 1m; or between 2m – 5m)
– introduce EVF right eye and left eye detection: depending on which eye you use for the EVF, certain customizable settings are activated
– introduce Siri for Fuji x cameras
– remember face / follow face for a specific face (good for keeping track a specific person in a crowd)
– introduce gestures for x-cameras. Depending on HOW you hold your camera activates certain customizable settings
– introduce a photographer sleep modus: every 36 shots the photographer has to “stop and change the film simulation”, good for traditional folks
Can’t think of anything else now.
That’s quite a list ! 🙂
i have 4 x-t1 , tested all firmware versions. and wow. so impressed by my x-t10 and 4 x-t1 comparison. the new 4.00 rivals with the x-t10 and made my camera new again. but when first installing the firmware 4.0. is it me or the af sound gets disabled? but everything else. love.
Same here. AF sound was disabled… Can’t seem to enable it anywhere.
You’ve just been upgraded from the amateur free of charge, what’s not to like?
So you don’t know either..
Operation Vol under Sound Set-up. It enables all beeps, including AF confirmation.
Did that. Everything makes sound except AF confirmation. That’s the odd thing.
Try a factory reset.
That’s a no go either. Going to try to re-install the firmware.
Ok you can officially make fun of me. Found the issue. I accidentally while handling the camera flipped the switch from S to C on the front of the camera :/
Well, if changing a major camera setting has a tactile feel of mixing fat with grease, at least you can find a comfort in knowing that it’s weather sealed… ))
Lol 🙂 I’m walking the walk of shame.
I haven’t upgraded yet but in the SET-UP menu (wrench# 1) there is an
option SOUND SET-UP and maybe the OPERATION VOL. is set to OFF due to the upgrade. You can change that. Hope this will help.
GOT IT. THANK YOU.
THIS OBVIOUS DISCWORLD REFERENCE NEEDS AN ILLUSTRATION.

Just installed 4.0. I have to say I’m not that impressed. I own four lenses and here’s my take on each:
XF35 – Hunts for each shot. I see no difference.
XF18 – Also hunts, but does seem slightly faster.
XF60 – Seems twice as fast now (which isn’t saying too much). Hits its mark for focus more often.
XF55-200 – This is the winner and what all the lenses should be like. No hunting. Silently goes straight to focus near instantly. This actually makes me more disappointed because I don’t know why the 18 and 35 don’t do the same. Those two are the ones I use the most. Kind of sucks. At least I’ll have better results during the kid’s soccer games.
The XF18, 35 and 60 simply have slower focus motors. They will never be as fast as the newer lenses that use linear motors. It’s a hardware limitation.
Thing is, I’ve read experiences with the beta that said the newer lenses
didn’t seem to get much from the update either. So then the question
is, what’s all the hubbub?
My 35 is a bit faster and doesn’t hunt as much, but not with the smallest AF point, no difference there. Focus tracking is hugely improved too, mostly with the lenses with linear motors. I haven’t had a chance to do extensive testing yet, but I’m happy so far.
I find the 35 slightly faster when stopped down to 5.6 or below.
Have you also the latest firmware on your lenses ?
Yup, checked that too. 3.1 with the 35 and the 18.
U sure you installed it?
and watch out for your settings. face detection and others force the camera into CDAF.
I tried 35mm, 56mm and 18-55mm
the 18-55 was incredible. not only spot but it was awesome in AF-C 3D Tracking
the 35mm had the most improvements in AF-S speed. Hunts way less (Only in specific back lit situations).
the 56mm got only a bit faster, but it’s tracking abilities were (imo) improved
LOL, I’m pretty sure I installed it, yes.
Didn’t notice a big difference on XF35 and single point AF either, but seeing a pretty major difference on Zone AF.
If it hunts you are still in CDAF mode. Enable high performance, disable face detection, use mechanical shutter and central point (not the smallest size).
All the people crying for updates for X-Pro1, X-E1, X100(s) seriously need to come back down to reality…
And you can’t be serious in throwing X100S in there with the other three. Big difference.
Does this mean, that we’ll get f/something good 300 mm prime next year?
I guess Fuji can now expect to sell a load more zoom lenses. The AF-C tracking is now brilliant!
Are we getting the same update for the X-E2?
Does anyone know where to download a lens firmware 3.10 and 3.11 for 18-55 Lens? I don’t seem to find it and my current firmware is 3.0. Is there an “Archive”
Thanks in advance
Current version is 3.12.
I know that
Obviously, you didn’t. 🙂
Can you upgrade from 3.0 to 3.12? It gave me an error!
ha ha:) and it’s quite clearly on the Fuji downloads page where it should be…I installed it only yesterday
There is a bug when face detection is turned on, AF-Lock button doesn’t work.
It’s not a bug – it’s a feature! Face detection and AF-lock are not supposed to work at the same time. It’s either-or. From Rico Pfirstinger’s X-T1 book p.243:“Neither AF-Lock nor AE-Lock is available when face detection is active.”. And this was with firmware 3.x
Thanks for the answer Jan!… so other “feature” that makes back button focus unusable… a pitty Fuji is so obtuse on how they think users should use their cameras… autobracketing of only 1 EV… funny. Don’t use back button focus, on first firmwares the PDAF where disabled on back button, now you HAVE to use half press on the shutter as the only possible way of focusing when face detection is on… BS in my opinion, only short minded programers, awful usability implementations at Fuji….
And Autofocus-C, keeps searching back and forth getting in and out of focus indefinitely as always, it never locks as even the cheapest DSLR do. Maybe on moving objects works better, but on static subjects it’s unusable, making back button focus very limited having to set Instant AF to AF-S. Tested with well lighted subject (sunlight), contrasty subject and 56mm f/1.2 lens.
“Maybe on moving objects works better, but on static subjects it’s unusable,”
I’m sorry, but that is the whole point of AF-C mode. There is a green light that shows up solid when it’s locked but it will move and reaffirm focus lock all the time if you or the subject moves. Even on the smallest of focus boxes, I get a solid green light on static subjects but only if I hold the camera still.
But, and this is a big BUT, I personally wouldn’t use an AF mode designed for moving subjects on one that is static. Use AF-S, that’s what it’s design for! They give us all these different modes for a reason, use the right one for the right situation and it will work just fine!
The continuous mode is still no match for a DSLR though (this is not a complaint, just a bit of reality).
I used to use continuous nearly all the time on my D700s, with people and static objects. It was just as quick as AF-S.
Don’t forget that photographers move even when shooting static subjects. For example, when shooting static subjects close-up, wanting tiny depth of field, AF-C on a good DSLR can work so quickly it can compensate for slight movement of the photographer. It’s actually better than AF-S in such circumstances.
It seems like you have never used back-button focussing on a DSLR, else you would understand his problem.
On a DSLR (with MF override) you can do the following: set the camera to AF-C and use only the AF-ON button to focus, not the shutter release. This way you never ever need to use the focus mode selector. This is how you use it:
– AF-S: press the AF-ON button just once, the camera acquires focus just once like in AF-S mode.
– AF-C: keep it pressed, the camera tracks focus as long as the button is pressed.
– MF: just focus by hand, since you have MF override and the shutter doesn’t trigger focussing this works.
This is by far the fastest and most convenient way to focus when you use different modes. The focus mode selectors are imho very difficult to operate quickly and this method works great!
I can’t say anything about whether this works with the current X-T1 firmware but that should definitely be Fuji’s goal since it is the standard way to focus for many photographers. And AF-C stands for “continuous” which to me doesn’t mean the object NEEDS to move. All it means is that IF it moves the camera will reacquire focus.
“It seems like you have never used back-button focussing on a DSLR, else you would understand his problem.”
Canon 20D, 40D,50D & 5Dmkii. Yeah, I have enough experience with DSLR’s and focus lock while in continuous mode. DSLR’s are way faster with AF than mirrorless but there’s nothing new there. I just don’t see the problem in selecting the appropriate AF mode by moving one switch, one click. Takes seconds and you don’t have to move your eye from the viewfinder. It’s not the end of the world
It would be better to have the AF-L button work while in AF-C mode though. My original point is and still stands, you can’t complain and declare a function “unusable” when you use it on something it wasn’t design to do.
As you say, many people may do the same as you but not all. I don’t. Neither way is wrong. I just tend to adapt to the camera I use, which is easier than trying to change every camera I buy.
I guess we just have different perceptions of what a camera company should be like. I don’t think a photographer should need to adapt to a camera (obviously in some ways he always has to). I believe a company should ask photographers how they want to interact with the camera and should then build the camera in that way. And since many photographers want to use back-button focus with AF-C (also for stationary subjects) Fuji should offer exactly that option. It’s not like there’s any magic to offering that setting.
Imagine this: you’re shooting an eagle sitting in its eyrie. Suddenly it takes off. Using back-button focussing you’re right there tracking it. Good luck moving that one switch quickly enough. Might not be a difficult action by itself but when you need to be fast it’s one thing too much to do.
Yeah, it wasn’t designed to do that but who freaking cares. Then design it differently because it’s a useful function. And it’s a way of interacting that many have come to love and therefore expect a camera to be capable of. Same thing applies to EC not working in manual mode. Right, it was never designed to do that. But that was a terrible design decision because it is a useful function. Fuji now recognised that and changed it. Same thing will happen with back-button focussing sooner or later. It will happen later if people who don’t need it defend Fuji’s choice to not offer it. It will happen sooner if we support our fellow photographers who wish to have this function.
Since you like to compare to cars: many people expect cars to have a cigarette lighter that can be used for charging. What if Audi built a car that doesn’t do that. They’ll say it wasn’t designed for that because it’s designed for lighting cigarettes. Would you say “Okay, if it wasn’t designed that way that’s fine!”? No, it has become expected behaviour. So has back-button focussing.
I love it…the difference in postings…
“Kind of sucks.”
“The AF-C tracking is now brilliant!”
Poor Fuji, all that hard work and they can’t get a break.
They’ll sell even more units. Fuji is catching up.
Here’s a million dollar question… I mean, a $19.99 question. Will Rico update his “111 X-Pert Tips” for the new FW?
I bought it but I didn’t read it yet. Better this way, I suppose 🙂
It would be great if I could set an AF range.
Hello folks. I have a good friend with a Fuji X-T1. He seems he cannot make the Live View Mode to display the live feed on the 3″ LCD. Restart, turn on and off several times, removing the battery – same problem – before the Firmware 4.0 update and also after the update. Anyone has an idea what’s going on with his Live View Mode? Thanks.
If nothing went wrong, click the viewfinder button on the shutter side of the camera until you switch the screen on. Or, click on display button on the back to change to standard view or other modes with live view.
Something went wrong, unfortunately. All buttons that could change the Live View were pressed. 🙁
Tried reset as well? Time to fill out repair form… Sry to hear that.
I am waiting for his answer, too see what other procedures did he tried, but I know he carefully cleaned the area, including light sensors, so excepting the RESET (which I still don’t know right now if he did it), everything manually possible was done. LCD shows the menu, so no direct physical malfunction to the LCD.
It still takes pictures?
Yes, it does, via EVF. Sometimes you need the LCD to frame your shot, especially when using a tripod or in difficult angles – here is the problem.
Software issue. If you could re-install the firmware it probably will be gone.
I still cannot reach my friend, to hear from him how things evolve. How can you reinstall the firmware? Don’t you get a message like “you already have the latest version” and the whole procedure stops there? I’ve never tried myself to reinstall a firmware version on my camera.
Not having issues with FW 4.00 but with all the changes I decided to reset the body to fact conditions and re apply, one by one my customisations
So the problem existed before the FW update, and (surprise!) FW update made no difference?
1. Do a factory reset.
2. Remove the eyecup (just in case).
3. Holding the camera at arm’s length, press “View mode” button several times.
If LCD still doesn’t work, send it for repairs. Or just pretend that you have one of these fancy “No LCD, no chimping” Luigi cases and enjoy the ride )
face detector does not work on beard faces.
…..
Funny thing is, it doesn’t work upside down either )
I believe you instantly…
i tried to update the FW 4.0 but i don’t know how the firmware i downloaded on my XT-1 showed FW3.11,
I tried again with several memory card , after i downloaded, it appeared the same thing. say;
NEW FIRMWARE NOT BE FOUND. TURN OFF CAMERA,.
It must be something wrong with the link,. i don’t know,.???
Although I an not an X-T1 user, it is great to see that they continue to improve it.
Now, assuming Fuji is dependent on Sony for sensors, and the X-Pro 2 will be delayed until 6 months after they release the new sensor in the A7000 (sometime in 2016), Fuji should do at least one of the following:
1) release the 100mm macro or the 100-400mm sooner, perhaps by the end of 2015.
2) produce the X200 with the sensor from the A7r ii and a fast 35mm lens (with adapters for 50mm and 24mm), and release it either in late 2015 or early to mid 2016, depending on development constraints. While it won’t be pocketable, a full frame X200 – a direct competitor to the Leica Q – is a no brainer. They can still release future X100 series cameras with APS-C sized sensors. However, it would be very smart to release a full frame X200 with a fast, high-quality lens.
I have a ver basic question. I just put the new 4.0 firmware on my x-t1 and I noticed that there is a lens firmware table. Do I need to download and install those updates as well to my x-t1 or are they included in the 4.0 update?
