Sony will sell the RX100M3 sensor to Fujifilm (sonyalpharumors)

 photo rx_zpsd5170c78.jpg

Sonyalpharumors just reported the following rumor:

“The RX100 camera series is a unique and very successful camera line. But Sony shared the RX100M3 sensor to Panasonic (for the FZ-1000). And according to two m0re anonymous sources they are also likely going to share it to Fuji and Samsung as well!”

I remind you that Fuji’s APS-C sensors are already manufactured by Sony.

  1. Hmmmm interesting. If this 1″ sensor makes it into the X30, I hope they manage to maintain the 4x zoom of it’s predecessors, rather than having to reduce it to shrink the package. My X10 is most frequently used zoomed all the way to “112”.

    1. My dream for travel would be the 1″ sensor from Sony with 9-45mm f/2.8 lens (24-120mm equiv.) And I’ll settle for f/3.4 if f/2.8 makes it unwieldy (doesn’t have to be as small as the RX100, as long as the camera + lens is roughly 450 gram or less)

        1. i’m all about this, with manual zoom control. please oh please fuji, i’ll hold my camera dollars for the day this happens

      1. Perhaps for a superzoom bridge camera to replace the XS1 (similar to the Sony RX10 or Panasonic alternative) where the size of lens would not be such an issue.

        1. That’s possible, but then it would probably be both. =)

Lens size is indeed a problem as Fuji is quite picky about the lens performance. The zoom would most likely have to be quite a bit less on a X30 type camera compared to the X20, but i guess that’s the price we pay for quality.

  2. Perhaps Sony’s is playing to it’s strengths (manufacturing/selling sensors). So in parallel they make camera’s like RX100 series, the A7, A6000 etc to make sure the competition responds with equivalent products using Sony high end sensors. If they did not make products like RX, A7, A6000 have little incentive to use new innovative Sony sensors.

  3. Nothing extraordenairy here. Sony sells sensor. They sell them internally and externally. You already find Sony sensors in cameras of Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Canon (not in the DSLRs) etc. If I’m not mistaken even the Fuji trans-x sensor is based on a Sony sensor (what is a good thing givven that the Sony sensor are currently the best you can get). So why shouldn’t Sony sell the 1” sensor to others?

    1. It’s not news because of the seller, but because of the buyer. If true, it might confirm that the X30/XS2 will receive a 1″ sensor.

  4. The XT-1 is a good camera that could be a great camera if Fuji did something about waxy looking skin tones when shooting jpgs at higher ISO’s and I have also sent his happen with skin tones at medium level ISO’s. So I won’t be buying any more Fuji cameras or Fuji lenses until they issue an XT-1 firmware upgrade to address this problem or until they come out with something new that doesn’t have it.

          1. They’ve updated more than once, they just don’t really pay attention to what they’re doing. No genuine effort. Always been a big fan of Lightroom, but ‘Adobe’ is really getting on my nerves and this goes way beyond xtrans.

    1. I was hoping Fuji would use the X30 as a test mule for the organic sensor. Guess the talk of 2016 as the earliest on the organic sensor are closer to the truth.

  5. You’re saying all of Fuji’s APS-C sensors (X-T1, X-E2, etc.) are made my Sony? Really? I thought Fuji made their own sensors.

    1. Fuji != Canon
Yes Fuji have the capability to make sensors as they have fabs, all their current lineup use Sony sensors. Fuji hasn’t manufactured their own camera sensors since CCD’s. Once the organic sensor (if it) sees the light of day, then they will be manufacturing their own sensors again.

      1. Who manufactured Fuji’s EXR sensor? That’s not a standard sensor, since the wiring needs to be different.

    2. Why is this news? Sony made all the sensors used in the X100, X100s, X-E1, X-E2, X-T1 – all Fuji did was put their own CFA (AKA – X-Trans CFA) – ok not the X100 – it had a regular Bayer CFA but still a Sony sensor. Sony’s FAB business is run separate from their camera business and they will sell to anyone willing to pay them.

    3. Fujifilm hasn’t made ANY sensors since they closed down their CCD fab plant. Ever since then it has been ALL Sony, Toshiba, and other sensors bought off the shelf.

  6. So does this imply that Fuji haven’t even started production of the X30? Man, I thought they were supposed to take it to the RX100 MIII. Sony will already have the MIV out by then if Fuji is just getting the sensor now, or soon in the future.

    1. And Panasonic is rumored to be prepping a tiny, EVF packing LX8 with a one inch sensor and both Panny and Olympus are rumored to have tiny, X20 style fixed lens cameras with even bigger M43 sensors. Competition is good and this space is getting really hot. The X30 will win on style and handling, I’d wager. But they need a better VF, bigger sensor, tilt screen and weather sealing.

        1. Yesterday would be better, but I’d settle for September and Photokina if it ships with the announcement
